GPS and cached google maps - General Topics

I've been searching like crazy past couple of days but with no apparent luck. If not to take into account the countless bookmarks that I have been creating. God knows why.
The problem for me is that I have never used a GPS software and as far as I have been reading, it is either tracking/geocaching software without maps and/or with online maps. Or then GPS solution for car with offline maps. I can't read out from anywhere whether geocaching/tracking software is able to use cached google map tiles - these can be obtained, that much I know.
So, is it so common to use that no GPS software maker mentions the possibility to use offline google maps?
Or is that so reasonable solution (at least to my mind) for having a tracking/geocaching GPS software that can use cached/offline map tiles from google, simply something that nobody wants except me?
Please enlighten me...

There is at least 1 GPS software package that I know of that can use the cached Google maps, gpsVP, and it's free.
I don't know if this helps, but .....
Here's the link to the website.

Thanks for the hint. I've been searching also meanwhile and found these threads and the application called Mobile Gmaps, if anyone is interested.

Is there any free GPS software

Hi,
I've been dearching on the internet for some good GPS software for my Diamond, that has the maps on the device. It doesn't need anything fancy but has to be accessed without an internet connection,
Any suggestions?
Any would be very greatly recieved
Thank you
Littleapps
never heard about it
seems like way too much work
as gps software require lots of lots of maps
and direction calc software and updates of new
roads constantly
Mmmm.
Thanks for the help, are you sure there is nothing, When reading articles I have thought I have seen some, but can't find the articles now,
Oh well, better keep looking
Thanks
there are many many free gps apps.. but they all deal with existant mapping.. such as google's maps.. or microsoft's maps.. or just GPS data applications..
Navigation..
The cheapest I have seen it is at http://www.navmii.com complete with Teleatlas Maps. Works on Diamond . It's only just out, haven't tried it but looks quite promising. Circa £45...
Free GPS without voice prompt and map routing
http://www.terracrosser.com/
It allows you to download maps from google and yahoo but only show your exact location without maps routing (maybe you dont call it navigation software but GPS location software)
It enables you to download the maps in mutliple zooming and satelite view anyway in google maps (best for those travelled frequently without data roaming)
Requires .NET COMPACT FRAMEWORK 3.5 on the phone and .NET FRAMEWORK 3.5 on the pc for software and mapper

HTC phones and free maps

Does anyone know if there are any plans by HTC to bring out free maps for use on the WM platform for use in their phones?
When I was in the UK and had a virtually free GPRS connection as part of my plan, I used Google maps quite a lot, switching between whatever connection was available without any real problems, however I'm on the other side of the world now.
I find that my phone an HTC Touch HD has developed a big black hole and seems to have reverted back to the dark ages, in that even though it has a massive storage card installed, I can't easily save maps to it and use the built in GPS on the move, even though I can view Google maps via the WiFi here. Crazy!
Maybe my next phone will be a Nokia as it seems they are taking smartphones to a new level with their free Ovi map offering!
Can I politely ask you to rephrase the question?
Do you want a download-maps-as-you-go service like Bing / Google or a maps-saved-on-the-storage-card application like iGo? If it's either of those, what's wrong with either of those?
Go? Please enlighten me! Nothing seem to come up on a search of Google from here. Is it free? Is it easy to get working with the built in GPS - I've downloaded some maps of Vietnam that displayed fine (eventually) but the gps refused to play ball..
Google maps is wonderful IF you have a connection. Here in Vietnam, in the city with all the free WiFi around it's fine but as soon as I'm moving around, I'd rather not be paying for that data connection. And Google maps soon lets you know it hasn't got one!
So yes, stored on the card is the easiest and to me the best option. I'm not bothered about GPS navigation software, I just need a stored local map ( a storable google type map would be great) and the gps will tell me where I am on it! I can usually work it out under my own steam where I want to go to from there.
Thanks

[Q] Do you have to side load Maps, or is it supposed to show in Market?

Yes, I have searched (a lot! Search is not my friend.)
I have found many posts from people having trouble with Google Maps (GPS questions, multi-touch questions, rotation and location questions). But I can't find anybody who has had trouble actually getting Maps.
I dream of having all those problems --- but I can't even find Maps in the Market (I've done the market fix and I thought I had the whole market, but the only time I've ever seen the market in my life is the last few weeks on my Gtab, so of course I have no idea if I have the whole market or not.)
Anyway, is Maps supposed to be visible in the Market, or am I supposed to side load it?
Or do I have to do something else to get it?

I see 97% or so (including maps!) of the application of my Nexus one with Vegan and market fix
check your build.prop if you don't see the market just do a forum search for the correct string
Everything else, I copy it from my nexus as much as possible!
Thanks for your reply.
I just found out that somehow I do have the Maps app after all! Is that why it doesn't show up when I search the Market?
I didn't realise I had Maps because when I was browsing the net, I couldn't view any maps. I didn't realise I had to open a separate app.

[Q] GPS in another country.

For the transformer can I use the GPS in Taiwan when I purchased a USA model. It is able to go around the world correct? is there a way I can load the maps? since i will not have internet access?
Google maps should work. If you do route planning while you have wifi access it will store the necessary tiles to get to where you want to go. If you need it to work all the time without internet access you will have to use navigation software with maps that are loaded on to the machine. Copilot and Sygic Aura comes to mind, as well as a few others. Alternatively I believe there are free programs to pre-cache google's maps, although i can't comment on those as i use copilot so i haven't had to look in to it myself.
It doesn't matter what region the machine is from gps isn't limited in that regard.
If you don't need navigation, look at Locus. (A free version is available.) You can set it up to download map tiles for a predefined area automatically, at your choice of zoom levels, and it does so from OpenStreetMaps, who have coverage second only to Google, if you ask me. Then you can have some seriously detailed offline maps.
There's also an app based on TomTom maps (which I swear by) supposedly coming out soon, but it isn't available yet. Keep an eye on www.66.com for updates, and hopefully it'll be out in time for your trip -- it isn't for mine.

[Q] Need Help Finding Offline Walking Nav

I need an offline navigation app for walking. I've tried a bunch of different apps and a bit of Googling, I couldnt find an answer.
Google Maps lets me cache maps, but doesn't let me do offline navigation.
OsmAnd lets me do offline navigation, but the way it goes is really long. KML not supported either.
I can get the KML from Google, that's no problem. I just need an app that has a map and a line of the path I'm going. If I have to get the KML from Google, I can do that. OsmAnd is the closest I came, but they were giving 50+ miles walking directions when Google gave 16 mi directions to and from the same place.
It can be free or paid app. I just really want one that works. If you could cache the trip on Google Maps, that would be perfect because the maps are cachable and I don't need voice turn by turn, I can look at the map and follow a line. I just don't think you can do that.
Thanks for any help.
Offline Walking Navigation
Of course .. As soon as I finally ask for help, I find one that's perfect to my needs.
OruxMaps has KML importing and map caching. Allows you to reverse the track as well, so it will fit my needs perfectly.
Just thought I'd post in case anyone happens to stumble across this.
