I need an offline navigation app for walking. I've tried a bunch of different apps and a bit of Googling, I couldnt find an answer.
Google Maps lets me cache maps, but doesn't let me do offline navigation.
OsmAnd lets me do offline navigation, but the way it goes is really long. KML not supported either.
I can get the KML from Google, that's no problem. I just need an app that has a map and a line of the path I'm going. If I have to get the KML from Google, I can do that. OsmAnd is the closest I came, but they were giving 50+ miles walking directions when Google gave 16 mi directions to and from the same place.
It can be free or paid app. I just really want one that works. If you could cache the trip on Google Maps, that would be perfect because the maps are cachable and I don't need voice turn by turn, I can look at the map and follow a line. I just don't think you can do that.
Thanks for any help.
Offline Walking Navigation
Of course .. As soon as I finally ask for help, I find one that's perfect to my needs.
OruxMaps has KML importing and map caching. Allows you to reverse the track as well, so it will fit my needs perfectly.
Just thought I'd post in case anyone happens to stumble across this.

I've been searching like crazy past couple of days but with no apparent luck. If not to take into account the countless bookmarks that I have been creating. God knows why.
The problem for me is that I have never used a GPS software and as far as I have been reading, it is either tracking/geocaching software without maps and/or with online maps. Or then GPS solution for car with offline maps. I can't read out from anywhere whether geocaching/tracking software is able to use cached google map tiles - these can be obtained, that much I know.
So, is it so common to use that no GPS software maker mentions the possibility to use offline google maps?
Or is that so reasonable solution (at least to my mind) for having a tracking/geocaching GPS software that can use cached/offline map tiles from google, simply something that nobody wants except me?
Please enlighten me...
There is at least 1 GPS software package that I know of that can use the cached Google maps, gpsVP, and it's free.
I don't know if this helps, but .....
Here's the link to the website.

Thanks for the hint. I've been searching also meanwhile and found these threads and the application called Mobile Gmaps, if anyone is interested.

Besides elevated views what does Google Earth offer over Google Maps? After waiting all this time for Froyo I can't really see what all the fuss is about? Can someone point out what I'm missing before I uninstall? Thanks
Earth
I didn't find it useful neither, its a app to show friends and play around but thats all imho
GPS Data
I only really use it for GPS data viewing that isn't hosted on a website such as KML data. Maps can now read KML but it has to be hosted on a webpage first so Google Earth is more convenient in that respect.
I played with Google Earth, and I use it all the time on the desktop, but I found it pretty useless on the phone..
If I need to load KML I'll do it in any one of my Geocaching programs. Anything I have that's KML I also have in GPX.
I found the Rmaps app because I'm going on holiday. Some problems with the maps though.
Is it possible to import an entire country map (google maps) into Rmaps? I found the pc software gmapcatcher, but don't know how to export it usably to Rmaps.
I know that hovering above the area in Rmaps caches it, but then I'd have to do that in different zoom levels, taking a lot of time. Is there a way to set the maximum amount of memory Rmaps can use to cache maps?
Hoping someone can help. The different guides out there are not very clear.
I know that with Mapdroyd I can download different country maps. But I prefer Google maps over the maps that Mapdroyd uses.
Sorry I think post is in wrong place, can someone move it to android apps?
Hello everyone,
I've got a pretty simple question which I sadly couldn't find an answer for and I was hoping someone could maybe help?
I am going on holiday soon and I've created a map on Google Maps on my laptop which is saved to my google account. Is it possible to load this on my Google Maps app on my phone so that I can use it (offline if possible) when I am away? It is just a map with some places I want to visit rather than a route etc.
I tried playing around with the app but could seem to get it working.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

At this case i don't know if it's possible, but if you use google labs from maps at your device, you can cache maps you need offline.
There is no possiblity to calculate routs with this offline version, but you can search for places.
Check it, with opening maps -> Settings -> google labs -> check cache map (i don't know what it's real name in english, sry, but i'm sure you will find it^^) -> go back to normal mapview -> choose the middle of the map you want to cache -> open this point and at the bottom should stand something like save map to cache or so.
With this method you can save 16x16km area around the point you chosen. Up to 10 cached maps are possible and they can overlap if you want to.
Zooming and stuff like this is possible like everytime routes calculation is not possible.
Many thanks Tectas, that is a big help. I just tried now as I hadn't seen this function before.
OK it doesn't import the presaved map but it's still a very useful offline solution.
Much appreciated!
I have a trip booked to Paris in about a month and I'd like a smartwatch that I'm able to glance at to see directions when I'm walking around the city. Ideally I'd like to not have to buy a data plan while I'm there so I'd be working offline.
I know the Pebble has OsmAnd+ that will deliver turn-by-turn navigation while offline, but I'm curious if there's any app that works in a similar fashion for the Sony Smartwatch 2 as that's the watch I'd rather buy.
I've searched the forums but haven't been able to find anything concrete, I know there's some apps that will display a GPS map but I'm more looking for the directions than just a map.
Any help is much appreciated, even if it's pointing me to a thread that contains this info already
The "Google maps smartwatch" extension forwards Google maps navigation pretty well, which will give you walking directions with data.
