Thats not a fastboot image friend. Its a OTA zip. The factory fastboot image for Cyanogen OS 12 aren't available yet.
---------- Post added at 12:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:40 PM ----------
The best thing to do if you want to start fresh is to download and install a previous KitKat fastboot image of CM11S and then install the official Cyanogen OS 12 Lollipop OTA zip you have linked above through CM Recovery.
FYI, from the forum rules:

Actually not true. Both are the full factory image and can be flashed even after wiping /system and /data. The difference is the TWRP version has been modified by removing a script so it will work reliably when flashed with TWRP.

Those userdata.img and userdata_64G.img are same in 44S and 05Q. userdata.img in lollipop is same as 44S and 05Q. So you can use userdata_64G.img from any of 44S and 05Q.

Or anyone could go to my guide thread, where you copied these instructions from.
Transmitted via Bacon
STEPS TO INSTALL CM12S OFFICIAL ROMS (IF you are running CM11S)
Firstly ensure that your Oneplus One device has the bootloader unlocked and you have the latest build of TeamWin Recovery Installed which is
openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.1-bacon.img
Threads to install this can be found on xda
Next you need to do the following
1. Switch of your phone
2. Press down volume button and power button
3. Enter TeamWin recovery
4. Wipe factory data reset
5. Install / Flash the CM12S file which is openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.1-bacon (584MB) - hope you have downloaded this from the the link given on this thread by Taufiq.
PS:Important thin to remember if you are getting an error while flashing this ROM file then you first need to update your TeamWin recovery version.
I was on 2.8.0.1 and it gave me an error to install this, but when I updated the Teamwin recovery to 2.8.5.1 and tried to flash it it worked perfectly fine.
All the best and enjoy the official CM12S for Oneplus..It rocks!!!
As the title says, can the latest 5.1.1 firmware on my European H855 variant be rooted, and if so, does it have any consequences (such as not being able to install future OTA updates)?
Also, if rooting is possible could somebody link me to the appropriate thread/guide foy my H955 please?
H855?
Sorry, H955. Corrected OP.

You got right. But i suggest that flashing the updated kdz with lg flash is a little bit safer than unrooting and ota upd. Also after kdz flashing a reset to defaults is recommended and then rooting

So which is it?
You asked for the way to Root, i gave an answer to you, now it's your choice
I have made and decided to share a TWRP flashable Project Spectrum zip that includes TWRP-.3.1.1-0 for spectrum. It is a full spectum rom including bootloader, firmware and TWRP recovery. It can be flashed from either ColorOs TWRP or Spectrum TWRP.
Install Instructions
- Do a full wipe first or the install will fail. (In TWRP hit WIPE then swipe to factory reset.) Do a backup first as you will lose data.
- Flash this zip file through twrp and then hit "wipe dalvic and cache", then hit HOME then REBOOT then RECOVERY. (rebooting to the new recovery will ensure the recovery sticks) then Flash any mods you want (eg. supersu ,magisk, exposed etc) and reboot to system. Enjoy
Return to ColorOs based ROM Instructions (ColorOS Bootloader, firmware and twrp)
(rebooting to the new recovery will ensure the recovery sticks) then Flash any TWRP flashable ColorOs based rom or restore any ColorOs based backup. NOTE the Spectum system and boot.img will still be there but wont boot so you MUST flash or restore a ColorOs based rom before you reboot to system.

Yep, the rom from tanvir is twrp flashable but I was planning on uploading 1 that includes unlocked bootloader and twrp.
I have been trying to build lineage based on spectrum firmware, that was my reason for making all these zips to swap between spectrum and ColorOs firmwares. Unfortunately it seems that lineage have abandoned plans to switch to spectrum base last night (also f1f support). So we'll see where this ends up. I won't stop trying, but the road ahead looks difficult.

After wiping Dalvik cache, system, data and cache just flash the Miui 10 rom file and after that flash the lazy flasher zip file. Then reboot It'll be take around 5-10 minutes to boot.

After wiping Dalvik cache, system, data and cache just flash the Miui 10 rom file and after that flash the lazy flasher zip file. Then reboot It'll be take around 5-10 minutes to boot.
Here's the lazy flasher zip https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=529152257862700328
