I have tried 2 different Windows Phone 7 devices. The Focus and LG Quantum.
I have been completely floored at how long their battery life is. Is this just because I have only evaluated them for a short amount of time.
I have compared them to my EVO and I will have to charge my EVO 3 to 4 times as much either one of the phones.
My usage has been
Between 30 and 50 text in this duration.
5 to 10 phone calls
Blue Tooth usage for audio/calls
Wi Fi Usage
Listening to Music
I agree completely! My Focus has never let me down, even during a day of heavy usage. These people you see on the forums complaining about battery life must not be coming from Android phones.
I have a suspicion that WP7 is designed to hit the network much less in the background and when the screen is off, thus using less power throughout the day. My only proof is that my monthly data quota is being depleted almost half as fast with my Focus as compared to my Aria.
I'm getting about 50-100% more battery life out of the Samsung Omnia7 compared to the HD2 with the same usage.
...but I'm also trying to treat the AMOLED screen right, so I mainly chose applications with a black background to make it last longer.
Omnia7 is lasting 2 to 3 days, HD2 lasted 1 to 1.5days.

hmm, my omnia 7 lasts 1 and a half day at maximum with low usage (just a few calls, sms and mails, a little surfing the web). all with dark theme and all apps with dark background...
at average it lasts exactly one day, definitely worse than my desire with a custom rom
i woundered about this cirumstances, because the battery is bigger than my ex-desire.
what are the biggest battery consumer in the os? maybe i have missed an important setting? (gps is off...)

My settings are:
Bluetooth always on (but not connected, just the 1hour I'm driving my car each day it connects to the navigation system automatically).
WLan always off
Location service is always on
I'm using the phone for approx. 10 SMS, 30min calls, 1 hour RSS feeds/calendar/internet and a bunch of EMails each day.
When listening to music, playing games aso. the battery is dying earlier but these are exceptions.
The thing that needs most of the power is the screen. Whenever you switch on the screen, the battery is draining fast. When browsing the web (white background) it is draining even faster.
Also, switching from UMTS to GSM needs power, in areas with bad reception the battery will drain faster than with steady reception.
also "find my phone" will use more battery.
i cant seem to put my WP7 down and still get @ 8 hours out of it.
Does anybody have problems when charging via usb through the laptop?
The other night I left my phone charged via the laptop all night... but when I woke up in the morning it appeared to have the battery completely drained.

Weird... my battery charges - slowly - while connected via USB, even while I am tethered.
it's probably a silly remark but it of course won't charge if your pc/laptop is sleeping/off.

Yeah, I had that problem too. I left the phone connected to my PC overnight, and the phone drained much more battery than it does normally (unconnected).
Otherwise it drains about 50% per day for me.
I found the same for charging off of my sleeping laptop... the battery drains itself over night. My fix was to close my laptop, let it sleep, then plug my phone into it. It stays trickle charging over night and has been fully charged for the last few weeks now.
As stated above, I'm curious what the answers will be.
We obviously can't define "heavy use", but I think everybody gets the point

I use auto brightness.
Also, when I got the TF I did the whole break-in thing. It was in the manual.
Now, if you want to get better life you can reset your lithium ion battery. Use it till its below 5%, maybe even go to 0%, then charge it to 100%.
Do this atleast twice back to back. You should see your life grow.
Also, never over charge it, and never leave it charging at night. Even though some people will tell you it 'stops' charging once it hits 100%, it actually goes to trickle, and trickle or not, its still over charging it.

Thanks for the answer,
I unfortunately don't have the manual with me, but true, I just got the tab yesterday. So do you think in time it will improve? What is that break thing you mentioned?

Manual says "to prolong battery life fully charge the battery for up to 8 hours when using the Eee pad for the first time and whenever the battery is fully depleted" Often wonder where you get these post that say don't leave it charging for more than 2 hours.
Auto brightness is really dim on my old eyes
BTW I have a dock and get a lot more than 7 or 8 with it ...very close to the 15 or so they say ..it is according to what your doing...if your playing games, watching flash or movies your mileage will vary
Same here, I usually just watch movies, (occasionally getting distracted by some tower defense game), but apparently my overall usage is due to the screen brightness. I had it on autoadjust for a while in the beginning (lasted like 8 hours) but then I don't like (is there an adjust option for autoadjust? it'd be a lot better if it made it just 10% brighter than it usually sets it..) the autoadjust, so now I usually have it on like 60-100% brightness and I still get 6-7 hours on it. Then i just dock it for another couple of hours.
Hm... too bad I like bright screens
So maybe that's the reason mine only lasts 3-4 hours :S
We'll see later on, maybe it will improve!

Wow. I have mine cranked and it lasts well over that. Closer to 6 with consistent video watching.
i mostly use mine to browse online and music etc,i get around 9 hours with auto brightness
*added*
i used systempanel to monitor when i sleep to check usage, its between 1~3 percent for the cpu, battery life stays flat lined. cpu activity averages 30% while device is at 100%. i use advance task killer and juice defender and disable connections and sync etc.
well one thing for sure, my mifi died before my transformer died, so i roughly say 6 hours ++. when in music, it saves a lot of battery.

2 hours is silly. Mine takes at least 2.5 to charge to 100%. I'm not sure where you've read that, but don't believe it! lol.
Li-ion batteries are great because they are extremely flexible and charging them like 5 times a day isn't a bad thing like it would be with an older technology.
But they are still susceptible to overcharge issues because they generate heat when charging, and that heat changes the composition of the battery, which makes it last less and less over time. That's why li-ions hold roughly 50% of their charge after 1.5 years of use.
And that's why one shouldn't overcharge it.
about 6~7 on stock..just recently tried prime 1.7 so will check for any changes
Does Netflix count as heavy usage? if so then I get about 8 hours
I use mine to browse and to remote desktop to my PC. Sometimes i use gchat and other times play a game or two. I get around 7-8 hours from the eee pad only. With the docking i get much more.
I use auto brightness, and wireless off when screen is off. This way i can leave my tf up and running all night and is ready to be used at any time. The main power consumption are the screen and the wireless on my usage profile. Both together consume more that 70% of my battery.
Is it possible to switch off the wifi automatically when the screen goes off?
Yes, of course. Go to wifi-properties, then choose extended (on German: "Erweitert") at the top right and there you can choose your setting.
(I've got a german TF - there it is "WLAN-Einstellungen"->"Erweitert")
With auto-brightness and wlan-off on screen-off 9 hours is no problem.
Great Tablet
I run Clemsons V4 Final, no dock and have the screen timeout set at 30 minutes. I didnt pay attention to the recommended battery stuff in the manual. And usually leave mine on the charger all night to be sure I start the day at 100%. I use my TF all day for work, taking notes, surfing and so on. I generally get home with 40%, if I dont play Angry Birds. I have played just music for 8.5 hours continuous with a 15% drop in battery.
Not iPad performance but still a keeper.
I put 6 hours of HEAVY use, but I usually get a full day's usage out of it since I keep my pad tethered to my charger at my desk all day at work.
tried the break-in charging thing (drain to 0% then charge it for 8-9 hours). My battery life changed drastically. Did it only once but ill charge it like that again when it depletes to 0%. It running now on its 3rd day with minimal to moderate use (28% as I am writing this). Will post battery drain per hour once done with the 2nd charging
No Dock, 2 Mobile Data Application frozen via Titanium back up
Hi,
I have the s2 classic and I love it. I have read on CNET that they were able to get nearly 3 days of battery life before charging. I can't get 24hrs of usage before charging. I have changed the brightness to 5 (the screen does shut off and is not on the always on mode), I shut off wifi and NFC . I am not using it all that much, what is everyone else getting on average? I just want to know if I might have a lemon.
Thanks

Hey @APT-ART , You can't try to turn off the automatic heart sensor for longer work on battery. Also the black background (pure black, so pixel are not lighted at all for that part of the face) will help to improve it.
For me it depends on how many notifications there are during the day, what applications I am using and how I charged it last time (I recommend to clean both the back part of the watch and the wireless charger as well). Also for some faces the brightness level of 2 or 3 should be enough to use it as a normal watch WiFi on but NFC off, also the automatic heart sensor turned on but less regular setting.
The battery stands for me for about 30 - 40 hours. But for the first two times I've got only about 16-18. Just let it discharged to 0%, then charge it to 100% without turning on. Good luck!
I keep my brightness at 3, keep always on watch face turned on, tilt to wake off, heart rate off, wifi on, nfc off, S voice watch face listening off, get probably 50 notifications per day and after a 16 to 18 hour day have about 40 to 50% battery left.
I think S Voice watch face listening, higher brightness, and tilt to wake (especially at a higher brightness) does the most damage to battery life.

Really good tip, I am going to let the watch discharge to 0% and see what happens. thanks! :good:
With very light usage I can easily get 3+ days. I turned off nfc and WiFi. I left on the heart rate scanning. I use it as a stand alone watch at work since I can't use my phone. I have the brightness at 3 and ambient display off / tilt to wake on. Not ideal usage for some, but it's a good setup for me.

I'm assuming everyone here has the non 4g version and that's why you guys are getting pretty good battery life. Got my S2 yesterday with 4g and fully charged overnight. Took off charger and about 8 hours later the S2 is at 38%. Not happy but going to try that discharge tip. To see if it helps. Also may have to tweak some other settings. I had the Gear S 4g and it didn't drain that much. I can usually get a days worth out of it.
you need several cycles to really know what kind of battery life you can expect; one days worth wont tell you a thing

You can change it by going into the s health settings on the watch. Options for auto heart rate are frequent, moderate, or off. These settings are separate from if you actually go in and start and exercise. I have my auto turned off (to conserve battery) but when I go in and actually start an exercise session on the watch, it will monitor heart rate. The auto heartrate is just for random monitoring throughout the day....having it set to off will not impact monitoring when you start an exercise.
Can anyone help and give me tips on how to stop my screen and mobile standby using so much battery,, also im using official moto charger and getting 7 hours until fully charged without any apps running, am i doing something wrong here
Thanks :good:
Mobile Standby is based on cellular signal strength, the better the signal the lower the battery usage, in general.
Screen should be the primary battery user, but you didn't give us a screenshot of your screen on time to make a fair comparison if it's normal or not.
The charge time is messed up though, mine takes less than 2 hours from under 10% to full if left idle, try another cable or charger with 1.2+ amp supply and check the USB port for lint buildup, I have seen excessive pocket lint build up and keep the cable from making a good connection.

Unfortunately, that screenshot doesn't tell us much because you have been charging partially off and on (statistics are since the last full charge), but I think your statistics are off... they add up to way more than 100% in the first screen shot, but I would expect the screen usage is normal since you are using the device quite a bit. The only way to get the screen to use less power is to turn the brightness down, otherwise that is one is and should be the largest battery user.
And even without a SIM the device will still look for mobile signal, it is capable of making emergency calls and to my knowledge in the stock ROM that cannot be turned off.
Thanks for the reply, sorted the charging time problrem out and lowered the brightness down to 10% and im still getting alot of usage also just to clarify i cant really do anything over the screen consumption?? Thanks :highfive:
New moto G 3rd Gen in the household. Is it not unusual for the shipped charger to struggle to charge at all when screen is full bright and wifi all radios are active? My son reported the phone would not charge at all. eventually went flat and had to use the Vol-DN/Power combo to revive it for him. Seems to be charging fine now with the supplied charged with the handset powered off. I suspect he had overwhelmed the charge by pegging everything full bright and on. Is this about right for this phone?

Sadly, this isn't unheard of... The charger that comes with these in the box is garbage in some parts of the world, check the rating on it, if it's under 1A/1000ma get a decent aftermarket one rated at 1.5A or better.

Thanks. Good advice the supplied charger is only 850ma. Will get a more powerful one.
I also wonder if the battery charging has some conditioning login going on in the first few cycles.
Last night I observed this weird behaviour as the phone charges.
-Motorola SPN5512A Phone USB AC Charger Power Supply 5.1V 850mA.
-Phone off.
-Pressing power button intermittently to display battery graphic and charge level.
It charges fine to somewhere over 51% and then begins to discharge rapidly whilst phone is off and charger is connected !!
At this point the screen remains on with charge indicator permanently displayed. Phone is still switched off.
This is a log of how it was charging, with me doing a quick press of power button to read the level.
5:24pm 35%
5:34pm 41%
5:46pm 48%
5:56pm 51%
<- In this period phone which is still powered off, spontaneously begins to discharge
7:20pm 30% screen on and battery icon displayed permanently. Phone is still off though. pulled charger and re inserted @ 7:21pm
7:31pm 36% now charging again with screen going off and the need to press power button to see charge indicator.
7:36pm 39%
7:45pm 44%
7:55pm 50%
8:17pm 62%
8:46pm 79%
9:34pm 95%
9:47pm 97%
10:13pm 100%
Any idea why it would have flipped from charge to discharge?

If you don't have a SIM card, I recommend putting your phone in airplane mode to keep the cell radio off. You can turn WiFi on after enabling airplane mode.
I was just about going to create a thread about it. My battery takes a full night to fully charge even with the phone turned off. What can I do so I can improve it? It is pissing me off seriously.
When you sleep, does your phone sleep, or does it stay up all night and crunch 1s and 0s? Rate this thread to express how you deem the speed at which the Google Pixel XL's battery drains under standby conditions. A higher rating indicates that when the phone is not in use, the battery drains minimally.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Hi everyone.
Is it normal standby drain for 5 hours 14% AlwaysOnDisplay Off, 20% AOD on?

That's not normal. Normal should be around 2% lost.
Since I'm on Pie (beta and stable), the drain, with or without, Wifi On and Mobile On, it's been very high!!!

well, I have to correct my statement. If I turn off wifi and mobile data, standby drain is stellar!!! During the night, I can get no more than 3%
Can't say the high drain that I have if using the phone... something that got a lot worse after a year (when I got the phone)
When my pixel xl is in standby for 3 hours, my battery drains arround 15 -17%, and my phone always shows Charging Connected Device via USB notification like it is charging another device, even when isnt connected to charger.
I'm getting between 1.5% and 2% per hour drain while idle at night doing nothing, since Pie. OS doesn't report any errant apps. Greenify isn't griping.
It almost uses no battery in standby! It's like magic. In one night it may lose 1% if you leave it on.
although i get about 2 and a half hour screen on time, i get virtually no standby drain whatsoever (latest stock pie). went to bed last night at 39%, *10 hour sleep*, woke up at 38%. what i dont seem to get very often is notfications while i am sleeping until i use my phone again in the morning, something to do with adaptive battery or doze?

i always have WiFi and LTE enabled. Unless i want to use LTE instead of WiFi, then WiFi gets disabled.
I have a massive drain and phone gets hot lately even on stanby, i don't know what happened, didn't add any new app, still on pie.
