I can't find much info about this phone, is it possible to root it in a similar manner to the other J7 variants?
Please someone help!
I know that most of you genius cell phone programming people have the nicest newest phones but some of us need to purchase the lower-end ones because its all we can afford. And because I can only afford this phone with its tiny little 16 gig bull stuff I really really would appreciate it tremendously if you guys could take the time out of your day to find out a way to root my device. Please someone one I'm begging you.
Really interested in rooting J7 Crown
I'm also interested in rooting my J7 crown. I bought 2 more for my kids as well. Going to be using them with google fi so I don't want all the samsung/tracphone/straight talk software, just a clean install of basic android.

Did some digging around trying to figure out the specs on this phone:
Chipset: Exynos 7884
CPU: 1.5GHz Octa-core
GPU: Mali G71
RAM: 2GB
Internal Storage: 16GB
(source: mobitabspecs.com)
I also found this about the Exynos 7884:
The Exynos 7884, meanwhile, has the same setup as the Exynos 7885. Two Cortex-A72 cores are accompanied by six Cortex-A53 cores, but with a lower clock speed.

Look around online I think you can use adb

I obtained an inoperable device from a friend. He tried rooting, tried flashing, even tried to flash a factory binary thinking he could circumvent Straight Talk's ridiculous bootloader unlock policy, but in the end, he pretty much bricked it. It wouldn't boot into recovery, it wouldn't boot into download mode, and it was stuck in some sort of device test mode. I was able to find out that in that factory binary mode, Odin was able to recognize the device and connect to it. I flashed the BL, AP, CP, and CSC files in Odin 3.13 I think was the version. Now it's back to stock. On the plus side, doing so removed the Google account associated with the phone. I am trying to pull the 'boot.img' file so you can patch it.

Okay so to start my name is lars. ive got a sprint galaxy s5. rooted on NE5 and then moved on to CM12.1 for awhile. now im trying to flash back to stock with little to no success. i tried flashing the stock OA6 (latest firmware) and i get <ID:0/006> FAIL! (Auth) and it says [aboot] Fused2 > Binary 1. no success. and i know that error usually means im trying to restore a firmware that's older than the current installed but its newer. i then tried to restore NE5. no luck. i can still get into recovery. but i cant flash touchwiz roms. any advice would be great. this isn't my phone its a coworkers and i feel terrible about the situation.
thanks -Lars
also i can boot cm 12.1 if i reflash it. it will not boot into touchwiz based roms at all. (recovery is still functioning)
This may be a dumb question, but you are going into download mode for Odin, correct? I ask only because you mentioned recovery a few times but not download mode.

yeah and that's what i'm using. the full OA6 tar and it rejects it because the phone thinks im trying to downgrade the firmware which makes no sense unless the boot-image is somehow corrupted but i thought it was all hard-coded into the boot-loader it self so im not sure. but thanks for the response non the less..

Have you tried to factory reset, erase all data, caches, and format the system, then boot into download mode reflash your proper firmware!?
That was the 3rd thing i tried no luck I've tried evening i can think of. It's got to be a hard ware issue
I'm having the same exact issue. I know my flashing abilities I've flashed dozens of different models. My problem was this phone was on lollipop 5.0, I wanted to root it then use custom roms. As soon as I flashed, and used a proper bootloader/rom etc. Im stuck at the samsung logo screen. I have recovery capability I can flash roms there, but not through odin at all. 0 success. I've download roms from sammobile, xda, other sources all same issues.
If you are still stuck, can check this thread, may help you out:

try to flash the ne5 tar in odin then see if it will boot then flash the latist firmware from sam mobile sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G900P/SPR/ download both tar files from here.
surprised that noone else has mentioned this, ive had very similar errors and then tried different usb cables. I know its a small percentage shot, but ive fixed same/similar issues with my good old trusty blackberry cable from 2006
HEYYYY , soo i think we have a solution here for bricked OD3 devices
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61388477&postcount=99
Someone with a G900P, and on the new OD3 bootloader, can dump the debrick.img as follows with Terminal Emulator after granting root access and send to you:
busybox if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/sdcard/debrick.img bs=4096 count=50000
Then:
Flash this Debrick file to your 16GB Micro SD card with Win32DiskImager by
*Insert your Micro SD card into your computer (backup any information you may have on it we are going to ERASE, FORMAT it to ex FAT
*Open win32DiskImager
*Navigate to the location where you downloaded the correct Debrick file
*Select your Debrick file by double clicking on it
*In the upper right corner of Win32DiskImager you should make sure that the drive letter assigned to your sd card is selected.
***Which ever drive that is listed will be erased, formatted
*Click write in the bottom right hand side
put the Debrick SD card in the Phone, Pull and Replace the Battery
Plug phone in usb and boot into download mode
yout phone should boot into download mode then flash stock firmware via odin

Hi all,
Apologies for such a simple question, but there are a bunch of different threads over the last few months that have slightly differing techniques for rooting and adding TWRP to the J7, but there seem to be a ton of different versions compared to the J3 and I need to make sure I'm following the right directions for a Boost Mobile j700p. I don't want to waste time and risk softbricking this brand new device, so does anyone know or can link me to the most up-to-date reliable method? I just upgraded from a j3 and it seems like the method is very similar if not identical (odin twrp on, flash chainfire supersu, flash xposed) but I just to make sure I am following the right directions and using the right files. This is for a brand new Boost Mobile j700p.
I have attached a screenshot of my phone info, in case firmware version or baseband etc info is relevant.
Thanks in advance for all your help!

This is the way i was able to root my version of the J700P. MY phone is the same as the screen shot provided. The only issue that i had was once i flashed TWRP and did a backup, the phone would constantly boot into TWRP Recovery. So i had to reflash stock rom and root again oh and i unchecked OEM unlock to off, didnt realize i needed to leave it on so i wouldnt get the FRP Lock lol. Still waiting on someone to let me know how i can install TWRP Recovery and it work and not soft brick.

i have twrp, the most current version on the sm j700p. All you gotta do is use odin to install it. Just make sure u use the most recent odin and twrp file for j700p. Then when u place it in AP with odin make sure auto reboot option is turned off so it fully installs it. If u have auto reboot on it will not complete the process.
Ok I will give that a try, tyvm. I cant uncheck auto reboot. Here is a screenshot.

Ok sooo now i did a backup and now again, it just keeps rebooting back up into twrp. I have no idea whats going on with this. Gonna have to reflash stock rom again and then root again. This is frustrating to say the least.... Keeps saying Recovery is not seandroid enforcing, set warranty bit : recovery...... Thats whats it saying at the top...

Please, don't overshare! Leave some of the magic to be discovered
So how do I turn this into root access on my g892u?
Is this file for flashing in Odin? Please elaborate for those of us who lack expertise.
Thanks a million to anybody who is working on a root for this amazing phone!!
Anyone try this yet? And I assume this is the engineering BL. Based off the title, so wouldn't we still need someone like chainfire to release root for the device? Also I wonder if this is for 892A or 892U.
To many unanswered questions.
I flashed this and it did work for the T-Mobile 892U variant. However all it appears to be is the unlocked/engineering bl and nothing more. It does seem to be a step in the right direction. I was successfully able to flash back to stock afterward so we do at least have that small comfort that the stock images are out. I tested flashing the s8 and s8 plus images and there's no compatibility between this and them. If anyone can find anything more I'll use my phone as the guinea pig for it.
If someone has the 892a like myself and we are on bootloader 2, we don't currently have Odin files to return to stock. The only files available are BL1. I assume the u fw is still on the same BL as the released Odin files.
It is. Have you tried flashing this and then following up with the fw for the u to see if it can put the a on the u fw? And last I looked you do have Odin files for the a. Let me find the link.

The bootloader doesn't need to be unlocked to reflash fw w Odin. That's the point of having the Odin files.
How does that work, having multiple bootloaders? I've never had to deal with that before.
You don't have multiple bootloaders.s, you would flash the engineering BL in place of our current. But again there is no way to revert right now.
So I have the a active I understand I cannot revert back but will this achieve root?

Theoretically it could but we would need a way to implement SU you can try this and then install SuperSU but I have a feeling that we need a binary built for this phone.
If what you are asking is if only flashing this file and Odin will give you root the answer is no however it is the first step to root assuming that the Eng bootloader allows root. I won't test this or go any further until there are Odin files released for bootloader 2
Had a feeling that would be the case, I didn't want to try anything until I knew for sure. If we're on BL2 wouldn't this never technically work since it's BL1?

You are correct this is only the Eng bootloader. We do not have full root confirmed yet.
This isn't even an "engineering" bootloader, it's just the one from the factory firmware called "combination" on the various sites online. It's the active version of the same one used to root the s8 s8+ and n8
The real engineering bootloader and boot won't boot on our phones, as somehow the engineers devices are marked for it

Absolutely nothing to do with Google.
The network carrier requests the bootloader to be locked by Samsung.
The caveat for buying a carrier branded device.
So i have the SM-S920L from straight talk only I have no pc and recovery mode e:footer is wrong
And e:signature verification failed (stuck n tracfone screen), done all the easy stuff from wiping cache partitions to the factory wipe and reset with no luck, still gets stuck n bootloop w/same error in recovery mode,
Desperately need a install to fix, would of had this done along time ago if I could use odin or knew how to fix this with just having recovery mode and sdcard to work with....any help would be greatly appreciated
I was wondering if anyone is working on a root method for the Samsung Galaxy J7 (SM-j737p) Refine. I have the Boost Mobile version. I would be glad to do some testing but I am not a developer.
Interested in this also. It runs on an Exynos 7 Octa 7885 chipset.

I haven't come acros this variate before and I'm only in need of a stock ROM.

I am not really looking for anything other than stock, myself, either...
But since there is legitimately-purchased software that is useful to me that requires root, that part is important.
I got fed up with Cricket's control-freak attitude, and that I happened to get us on a plan for at least 1/3 less than Cricket, with this device on their free list...
Boost and Samsung don't seem to be as paranoid as Cricket, and I believe it's merely difficult, as it should be, to root this rather than impossible by design.... Difficult, as I guess that from a vendor's standpoint, being swamped with "I bricked it" calls probably got a bit old...
But, yeah... being able to rather painlessly root the beast, with a TWRP set up for this model, and at least a bit of documentation as to how to get it back to factory if I screw it up would be very, very welcome.
I had the ZTE-comparable device to this, and really, this is a sweeter phone... elegant to look at, a big enough screen for my mongo fingers, and enough operating headroom so I don't get impatient waiting for some noble coder to come up with the goods...
Spoke with the guy that did the Galaxy A8 twrp and asked him if he would work on the 737p and hes considering it. Give the man some support so we can finally get out damn phones a recovery and possible root

And I believe I've seen the method to do that, but for many, if not most, it's pretty tedious, and really not what most would be willing to try... Lots of potential pitfalls without a simpler method, and really, the possibility of making a paperweight, for many.
I'll be looking to try it, and am trying to find a stock firmware somewhere... Just at present, and always, I'm grateful for those whose passion is development... My programming chops are decades old and rusty...
But remember, the vast majority of members are not idiots... just not quite as technically adept as others, and I'm among those that really would rather wait for a simpler method, and an at least a decent how-to... Done it before with other devices, and I've been around here for years...
It's a seriously rocking device, better than the comparable ZTE I used with Cricket, I know that neither Boost, Sprint, nor Samsung are quite as much paranoid control freaks as Cricket, StraightTalk and the rest...
I am more than certain that it's just merely difficult, as it really should be... "What does this button do?" is not a good thing to hear... I doubt that it's impossible, and I would gather that the code structure is at least similar to its predecessors in the J7 line... has to be...
Is there a way to attach files to these comments if so I have the stock firmware and factory firmware both
Does anyone have version 2 firmware for the j737p refine?

Could you please paste the stock firmware that you used? Having trouble tracking down a verified version.

Can you post a link to the boot img or pm to me
I am going to be using a Raspberry Pi 3b for heimdall and I don't have very much experience with it, i downloaded the ARJ2 4 part rar, extracted got the 4 part tar.md5 and then in their respective folders .tar. now i have an ap folder with boot, carrier, recovery, system, userdata, and vendor.img.lz4. Do i just extract with rar into .img folders, and I have the correct boot image for magisk to patch? Then do i want a tar or img for flashing with heimdall, I was flashing any file anyone sent for the j327p but I had odin money for a new phone!! Please do not respond if you are not positive. Heimdall is not the easiest to use in my opinion but I'm new to linux. Thanks for your help.
This is a link to the J737P-VPU2ARJ2 BOOT and recovery img.lz4

I patched the boot.img file via magisk and used Odin to upload it, but it failed.
I used magisk to patch boot image and heimdall on raspberry pi 3 b to flash it!! Awesomeness!!

I actually had a lot of problems, but it finally worked, I'm not exactly sure what I did wrong. Heimdall is not as easy to get directions, it asks for a lot of different things to input. I'm new to using it, I think I was having problems with not using, sudo heimdall-frontend because it was fine first time I did that. I may have been flashing to much stuff in the wrong order, I was stuck on first screen with kernel length to long. I finally got it with sudo and boot img
Hey man, I also have a SM-J737P but it's the Virgin Mobile variant.. Will this work with it? And what does this Heimdall method do exactly?
Could you please include the steps? I also have a Raspberry Pi 3 b.
Thank you for your timeĀ”
