Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S is not that popular? - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S Guides, News, & Discussion

Well, I got this device but I fail to see, roms, twrp recovery and other things that have official support.
Tbh this feels weird comming from OnePlus One device(gave it to my gf). I have 2S since summer and wondering if we ever get anything official(roms, recoveries etc).
Afaik source is released quite a while ago, any thoughts? It's a popularity thing or what?

I had the same impression but what surfaced in the last months is really great.
Some of the devs here have provided everything you're asking for. I was a little nervous if I had made the right choice buying this phone and the first releases were a little buggy but so far all of them work.
Maybe there's some tweaking and repairing necessary, but I use Arrow OS and MiPa kernel version 3.5 by @palaych and TWRP v13 by @notsyncing and everything is working great. It's my daily driver now and it's stable, fast and reliable.
Except the proximity sensor, but that's not the devs fault. Maybe Xiaomi should stop their buggy miui releases, release the pie kernel sources and repair their own system. Meanwhile the Devs here could provide ROMs that really rock. But maybe that's what Xiaomi is afraid of :silly:
And just because something isn't official it doesn't mean it can't work really well. It does and I'm happy to have such people here on XDA that provide such great work for free.
And who knows, maybe their work gets appreciated and things become official some day.
Give it a try and you'll be stoked!

I also came from the 1+1 one and used miui from launch of mi mix 2s until one week ago. Now I'm on aosip and it works great, community becomes bigger and bigger and our devs are great and active in our telegram group. Currently, there's not that much to choose but everything works flawless and additionally we have the GSIs there'll be more in the future

Is there a time limit when Xiaomi might release the P source? I never was a fan of MIUI, I bought the 2S thinking about use custom ROMs, but stay without a fully working custom ROM sucks pretty bad, I'll stick to MIUI until we have those sources.

Well if you want a fully working rom, get rid of miui. The bug reports are longer than the extended lord of the rings trilogy!
Just kidding. The ROMs you find here work pretty good, only thing I can say is that the proximity sensor isn't working. Which is a a little annoying sometimes but nothing that bothers me too much. And I'm sure as soon as Xiaomi releases the source codes the problem will be gone!
I use arrow OS for Polaris now and this rom and aosip are really great. Pixel experience has an official branch on their website for our device but no files uploaded at the moment.
So we'll get to see more custom ROMs in the future which is great!
Edit: with the latest fixes in Arrow OS and Pixel Experience the proximity sensor works perfectly fine! And meanwhile pixel experience has uploaded a file and the ROMs really works well!

Well until I see some official TWRP recovery and won't mess with the phone. I mean it's more powerful than my previous(1+1) device which I was good but my gf needed a phone so I upgrade mine instead heh

Even being unofficial we have two TWRP variants fully stable.
I never faced any issue with TWRP.

Why is pixel development lagging?

Seems like twrp, rooms etc are not really being developed. Anyone have any ideas on this?

There are a few and the performance is good.
In terms of price, the pixel is pretty damn expensive compared to other android phones with similar specs. Add to that the fact that, in the USA, at least, it was nearly impossible to get one for the longest time and finally, the way the partitioning is set up is quite different that any previous android phones. All these make for some slow development.
It's expensive plus Google's security features are becoming more problematic. The newest bootloader is causing issues with root now.
The real dev device now is OnePlus not googles product anymore.

Was actually my thinking also...
I came to the conclusion, that nobody has this device, and also google is making it hard to develop for the pixel. Working against the dev community with each update.
I am not worried though, because I only need root for my ARISE sound mod ,and backup/restore via Titanium Backup. I'm running completely stock, because that is the fastest, smoothest, most battery friendly setup I could find. Now that (even with a lot of hacking and manual adjustments) both TWRP and root works somehow, I am enjoying my pixel as it is... All these new things, like slots, loosing the recovery partition etc. make this device terrible for flashing. I was used to flashing my phones without a PC for 6-7 years now. I didn't even had to hook them up to the PC, only once, at first recovery flashing.... This is not the case with the pixel..
Maybe if the new partition layout gets picked up by other manufacturers, the problems will be solved quickly. Or even google drops this nonsense with the new pixels, and then we are really doooooomed

Lol...OnePlus are unavailable to release nougat for the OnePlus 2 (SD810+4Gb Ram)
I don't really agree. The development took some time because of all the new features.
We are not really missing any roms, root, twrp or anything I want to be able to do. I see PN, DU, Lineage, OctOS, PixelDust, RR. I mean what other ones you want?
I'll get an OP when they decide to support their devices at least 2 years. They burned enough people with OP2.

Twrp seems abandoned, and the mix and match instructions for getting things to boot and run with magisk etc just seem odd, that's all. I'm sure everything will be figured out with time, but was just honestly curious.

Well the developer works on it when he can. It works fine so we do have it. Will need a new one that can sign the boot image.
Magisk isn't officially support it since developer does not have the device.
New boot signing procedure had a fix in a day or two after Google release. That's not bad. Things are not perfect I agree. Multiple slots are making things the hardest I think.

Most stable custom rom for daily usage

Hey everyone,
I am bit confused with all these custom roms available for Honor8.So I would like to ask you which rom do you think is stable enough for daily usage and why?Are there any problems/bugs?
Thanks in advance

There's no stable custom roms for H8 at all. A lots of bugs, like cameras not working. You should stay on stock

As they said.
I've tried almost all of them and the closest to stable i got was AOSPA which crashed and rebooted randomly when using the GPS.
The Remix Resurrection/Lineage based ROMs would lock me out whenever I had a passcode turned on. What ever it tried to do after unlocking would crash and spit me right back out to the lockscreen.
Hopefully, the Oreo update comes soon, and, hopefully, it comes with Treble so that the Devs will be able to get the ROMs working flawlessly.
I don't know what these guys are talking about, but I've been using CarbonROM as a daily driver for several months now. I have working Magisk, working cameras, working basically everything - except for VoLTE. Though I've heard the VoLTE bug is only applicable for my model (FRD-L04), so you might not even have that. Give it a shot if you want, it's worked fine for me other than the VoLTE.

You failed to mention the camera is sub par on that, and every single custom ROM because it only uses one of the back cameras. All the nougat ROMs have simple bugs that the "developers" have failed to fix because they give up.

Well yeah, it's a custom ROM - of course the devs don't have access to Huawei's proprietary camera drivers. That's not a bug, it's just the nature of custom ROMs. If OP wanted the best of the best camera quality, they would stick with stock, but since they asked for the most stable ROM that people knew of, I recommended one whose developers had indeed worked out the majority of the issues to where I could only identify one minor one from my months of use.
I used customs roms for the shortest amount of time as daily drivers because the battery life really was bad, sound quality didn't flash me (not even with V4A) and the camera is truly sh*t on custom roms too.
If you aren't one of those people who really can't live without stock Android then stay on stock, we'll probably get Oreo or at least EMUI 8 soon.

is general gsi roms good enough

is general gsi roms good enough for our device or is it better to wait for specific rom that is well modified for our device??? In other words is there any general gsi rom that is good enough and has major hardware parts working (camera, wifi, hotspot, brightness, bluetooth... Etc) ???
Thanks
Has anyone tried Havoc OS ROM ?
Generally speaking they're good enough to use assuming you can get them installed on you phone. I was using Phh's unofficial Ressurection Remix Rom for a while, and the biggest issue I had was the fingerprint sensor acting as a mouse button when the screen was on. Otherwise everything was very smooth and worked like what I expected them too. Battery life might have been a bit worse than it was on MIUI. I've had similar results on all of Phh's ROMs, although I haven't really tried images from too many other developers.
Installing them can be a struggle. It seems like half of the time I try to flash one I need to wipe everything on the phone to get it to work, but other times I can flash them with no issues. That's not specific to GSI images though. I've probably wiped my phone (system and storage contents) half a dozen times because I accidentally soft bricked my phone trying to flash something. That's probably more user error more than anything else.
I have also never been able to get gapps to flash on a GSI ROM. I've always had to use ones with them built in.
I ended up going back to MIUI because the GCam mod wasn't working properly, and a large reason for buying the phone was for the camera. I'll probably go back to Treble images once the major ROMs start releasing Pie variants, assuming we don't get some native ROMs first.
Anyone else get a trebble rom to work yet?

I flashed a lot of them. Most have bugs as you can imagine e but that's not the rom's or devs fault.
I had installed
Official Resurrection ReMix
Phh treble AOSP
Pixel Experience version 8.1 and 9
Polaris Pixel experience
Google extended
All with similar bugs/features. The 8.1 versions work pretty well, the pie versions have all the same bugs. But they are daily driver material in my opinion if you can do without some functions. Some of them have enough no working camera, others have trouble with NFC and bluetooth.
Others have distorted sounds (which can be easily fixed).
Just browse the treble development thread and find out what fits best for you.
I'm using pixel experience official 8.1 and 9 unofficial (on two separate MiMix2S) and so far it works for me.
I think the best by now is the official 8.1 PE rom. Most of the things I'm using do work really well. Now I'm eagerly waiting for the Polaris Pixel Experience Pie rom...hope it will arrive soon.
I think we own a not very popular device so devs are rare but there are some of them doing a great job and working on those issues. Maybe some could donate some bucks like I did to keep them motivated and show some appreciation for their hard work.
I've had the best experience with the Benzo 9.0 ROM.
How is the camera on GSI roms? One of the reasons I updated from the mix 2 to the mix 2s was for the camera.
Is it comparable to MIUI?, or total ****?
I am using the AOSP 9.0 rom by @phhusson: https://github.com/phhusson/treble_experimentations/releases
Apart from the camera, I'm not aware of any known issues. Bluetooth, NFC, Sound and Calling issues have all been resolved (thank you very much @phhusson). I guess there are other issues I did not hit yet
The camera app I use is from here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xi...ed-p-mix2s-t3838406/post77529938#post77529938
Its possible to take good pictures (without color issues) but some feature like HDR, portrait don't work.
As a base for this rom, I use the most current global beta from here:

If it's the aosp ROM by phhusson it's stock Android and works smooth but lacks some features IMHO. Nothing fancy but a great leap forward in treble development. Great guy developing good and stable roms.

Will xiaomi mi mix 2 roms work on 2s?

I haven't gotten my phone yet ordered it Saturday shipped today so 3 weeks I wait. As I wait I was wondering if the roms that are available on the 2 would work for the 2S and vice versa? (I have the 2s coming) I heard mostly same hardware just different cameras and wireless charging not sure much more has changed. Thanks for your input can't wait to root this phone and use it daily
No they wont work. However most of the project treble Roms work for our phone
Nope - use the available MiMix2s ROMS
Thanks to both of you I'll look into Project Treble Roms when I get the phone. I want the phone to function as intended and have root and a decent skin from the looks I'm not liking miui maybe i'll change my mind when i get it. Probably use Nova launcher but will want to root it anyway so thanks for your help.

You won't! Trust me!
I'm dreaming of a pixel experience pie rom. This would fit my needs the best. I don't really need all the customisation some of the roms offer although I must admit they are great and the ideas behind them are really cool.
The treble roms are pretty stable by now and daily driver ready IMHO but the MiMix2S isn't very popular as it seems so not too many devs out there building for this device. Maybe this will change in the future, until then I'll stick with the benzo and pixel experience roms.
I agree
Miui should die
I don't agree with you both I owned a 1+1 for more than 3 years and flashed a new rom every month or even more often. When I got the Mi Mix 2s I had to use it with miui for 2 weeks because of bootloader unlocking time(this is the most stupid thing I ever encountered). I'm on miui since then because I LOVE the gesture control and mostly it just works. As soon as we got a rom with gcam that supports slowo videos I will flash an aosp based rom too to test it but to say MIUI should die or he will hate it is too much. It's working fine and is full of features.

I think it depends on your individual needs and what you expect from a rom.
I too think that miui should die. Xiaomi is producing great devices regarding the hardware. But if you force your customers into using your own ROM (even if it is only the bootloader unlocking time) then this should work perfectly fine and fluid. Read the comments section in the miui forums or here on XDA. It's full of bugs. Every time they release a new version something else is broken.
If I'd like the look of iOS so much I'd get an iPhone. It's neither looking original nor behaving like a finished ROM. For me it felt like a developer version. So many bugs and not even the simplest features worked correctly.
I couldn't care less for navigation gestures or slowmo video (although this is really a nice feature), but I'd like to have working Bluetooth hands free, stable network connections and the possibility to connect to an airports WiFi. None of this worked with miui. At least not for me. And that's the reason I switched ASAP to a GSI. Those were the longest 15 days of my life.
Of course the 8.1 versions worked much better as Pie was just released and many things had to be sorted out. But some of the Devs here did a much better job in developing stable and well functioning roms than the miui team.
So in my opinion MIUI should just die or at least they should reduce the stolen/copied functions and concentrate on the main features and make them perfect.
To me it seems they concentrate more on the looks of their OS than the functionality.
But I don't want to start a debate of principles. If you like it use it, I will never return to this abnormality of an OS.
Whats this about waiting 15 days or 10 days for unlocking bootloader? Going to do some googling about it but figured I'd ask that sounds annoying if its the case.

Yes it is and you can't do anything about it. It's Xiaomi's way to prevent their phones from being delivered with malware infested roms as it's too much of a hassle for the shops to unlock and install it.
I hated it too. You're lucky that it's only 15 days and not 720hrs like some have.
I don't understand it because if you get the phone with a not certified or custom ROM from a shop that looks suspicious you could simply install the original Xiaomi firmware without the headache.

In the meantime you can set up your Xiaomi account as you will need it for unlocking you phone anyway and request the unlock permission.
As soon as you get the device, bind the account to your phone so the time starts counting down immediately. Then it's only 15 grueling days using MIUI but then there's a whole lot of roms which make the device what it should have been from the start. A stable, fast, reliable and good device!

Did OP abandon this phone?

This is my 2nd OP phone, first was the OPO. Couldn't believe how much life I squeezed out of that phone, and by most accounts OP has been good about keeping their old phones updated and usable.
Instead we've had broken Android 10 on the OP6 for months. Did something change at OP? Between this, unstable TWRP on the 7t, and unlocked bootloader issues with the McLaren, it seems like they DGAF anymore.

Its always a good practice to factory reset after a major update. My brother's Galaxy M30 was lagging after the recent Android 10 update but factory reset made it fine again. So maybe it might work for you as well

I'm rooted but did a full wipe incl. data when I upgraded. Had the same lag, battery drain, brightness and keyboard issues people have been complaining about with the latest stable release. Toughed it out for 2 weeks before reverting back to 9.0.9. It sucks because I don't want to give my headphone jack or my rear fingerprint sensor, and definitely won't be sticking with OnePlus if they cannot be trusted to keep a 2 year old phone properly updated. This is a stock ROM. I never mess with custom ROMs on OnePlus devices. And the mere fact that I'm using TWRP and Magisk should not break the UI. It never has on any other phone I've had going back to the HTC Evo 4G. On every other phone, stock performs the same whether or not it's rooted. If that's no longer the case with OP then that's another reason to reconsider paying $6-700 for their phones.
Not sure.. But Oneplus literally screwed this device with their Android 10 update.

If that's no longer the case with OP then that's another reason to reconsider paying $6-700 for their phones.[/QUOTE]
You might add that TWRP doesn't have anything to do with the ROM, and Magisk is fully systemless, so without active modules, this shouldn't be able to break anything ...

I have not tried any of the beta versions.

This. Bump!
I even didnt try update to 10...
Rarly came here due lack of interesting new things....except Gcam....
Happy with 9.0.9 and period. Root + TWRP + xXx rom for ViperSound.
Everything works, don`t touch more.
But i really feel OP already left this device to abandon......such a shame.
Or, due to many models, the team is the same with lot more work, anyway we all suffer lack of confidence in them. Or at least me.
Camera, sound =piece of crap
I think all you cant complain about Op support. Say me which brand dice you Active and fresh support on devices older than 2 years.

I don't understand what is your expectation when you say OP has abandoned this device? They worked towards providing Android 10 update, but it was your choice to not to install it. People reported bugs and stability issues in Android 10 update, and OP has worked and fixed many of them, and they are still working on it (been using Android 10 since beta and at current state, very much satisfied with it). But is not beneficial as you have chosen not to use it. If you like using rooted ROM with mods installed, and if your expectation is that OP provides you the mod functionalities in the ROM (if that's what you expect), that doesn't mean they are not working at all on this device. If you are happy with older ROM and do not wish to upgrade, then I don't understand why complain about OP not providing anything new?
Camera and sound are not up to the mark, for Camera, even with GCam I don't find the image quality satisfactory. And this is a major drawback of this phone, and only solution is to buy a phone from some other manufacturer, like Samsung which is better in these aspects (at least that's what I could think of for my next purchase)
Apologies if I sounded rude anywhere.
I'm running the first version of Android 10 that was released and the only issue I have encountered is the black screen while trying to unlock the phone. That's easily circumvented by just pressing the power button to turn the phone off and then back on and done. I've had this phone since launch and it has by far had more updates than any other OnePlus device that I have owned. I have been a faithful customer since the OnePlus 3 and I have owned every device since
OP here. 10 3.1 fixes nearly every issue I was having with Android 10. I'm rooted and running the latest TWRP and having no issues at all except for the space under the keyboard, which is an easy fix. Furthermore it looks like a lot of the issues I was having were with Android itself, not OOS. In any case I hereby withdraw my criticisms of OnePlus' handling of this. Great work, team.
I will also add that I recently acquired a OP7Pro, and while it is a great phone, Android 10 is just as glitchy and 98% of the time it does not feel any faster than the OP6.
