This is a common issue when using custom ROMs because the stock camera is a proprietarily protected and controlled closed source software, custom software developers do not have access to the source code for stock camera apps in order to make the stock camera app work with the custom ROM that they build. Typically, the custom ROM developer has to work from scratch in order to debug the camera to get it to work.
A common solution that is used by many users that use custom ROMs to fix the camera is to use a 3rd party camera app from the PlayStore such as the Google Camera app or the ABC(A Better Camera) app. Try some 3rd party apps to see if you can find one that works.

The only suggestion I have is to post your issue in the ROM thread where you got your ROM to let the developer know that they need to fix the camera issue. Maybe the developer or other members in that thread can figure it out.
If using a 3rd party camera didn't work, you're going to have to wait and see if the developer fixes this issue in their ROM build. They might figure it out and they might not, some ROMs never get the camera fixed at all, either the developer never tries to fix it or they try but they don't succeed. Like I said, the camera is a closed source software, there are no resources to use to fix it, whoever attempts to solve the issue has to work from scratch and figure it out piece by piece from nothing. If you're not a developer, there isnt much of a chance that you'll figure it out for yourself, but you can try.

Hello all,
I have the same problem as you with my camera. The Gallery isn't displaying my pictures from my camera. it started out with some of them just being black and saying no thumbnail when i would select it. When I open one of it in the gallery, only "loading" appears.
Somebody heard about this issue? I have this problem since last Thursday. I'm using cm9 nightly build.
I try a full wipe but no effect on it...
Thanks.
Lens cap on?
(Sorry, I couldn't resist)
New camera apps still access the same base camera apk.
So you might have a borked camera apk. You could flash a new one.
Or if you have a custom ROM or kernel something in the rom or kernel might be bad. Try reflashing the kernel, then try a different kernel, then reflash the rom, then try a different rom.
Though i doubt the kernel is at fault since you can read bar codes. It sounds like the camera isnt converting its images to files. That could be a apk issue or a rom issue

I try to reflash the rom with a full wipe, no effect... Is the kernel flashed when a rom is flashed (For me a kernel is present inside a ROM, isn't? ) ? If not, which Kernel I have to use?
Thanks!
I tried with another Kernel : the Kernel Bricked 3.0 v1.4 but doesn't change anything. How can I find a stock camera app apk?
Thanks
Here below a logcat when taking a picture.
Have anyone an ideas about this issue?
Will be grateful for any contribution.

+1 Nobody has the same problem as us?
I tried with CM10 rom and the same problem. So the problem is not related to a specific ROM and not related to a kernel.
What's the problem?
+1 here, cm9 && cm10 not working, miui based on stock kernel working
on cm9 && cm10 the camera preview works fine,
i have posted here, with a camera logcat pasted: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38806849&postcount=235
have tried sultan kernal r20.8, still not working
I've the same problem, I am pretty sure my camera is fine. It can take the photo even in preview the photo is fine, but it cant save the photo , it just a black image with a exclamation sign, not only this there are other problems too like , with youtube app I cant watch videos, with gallery apps the videos ( that i took before) are blue shaded and not clear and laggy , but with mx player both videos are working fine, Tried a lot of roms , in MIUI rom youtube can play videos also gallery playback is fine , but the camera problem is still there , tried a lot other roms too like ahrd , viper, revelation , aokp, cm10, etc etc, only with miui youtube and gallery playback works flawlessly. Any solution anyone ?? please ? I changed the sd card too, nothing.
exactly the same problem here...
after unlocking and flashin 4ext and a new rom my camera looks fine, but doesn't save the pictures... anyone any idea please?
i really miss my camera!!!
I even went to stock rom, still my problem persists . I guess its problem with 2D GPU thing, cause even in weather app when I click on demo the sense weather thing doesnt work. Sometimes it takes a picture but with serious bluish tint.

that's weird... i have the 3 of them working on my HD, I really don't have any idea of what could be the problem.. sorry
Many AOSP based ROMs aren't compatible with blur based apps. I think it has something to do with the libs.

CM11 Moto G Stock Camera FC

I really liked the stock camera app in the original firmware so I decided to try and install it. The app starts without any problem, settings work, HDR works... Everything except when I try to take a picture, because it force closes. Is it possible to fix this?
Logcat attached.
How did you manage install the stock camera? The app plain refused to install with no error.
Same situation, but on GPe rom.
I'm kind of in the same situation.
I'm running the GPe rom, and flashed the moto camera, then the stock camera, and then the moto camera (just trying things out). (See: modaco.com/topic/368504-mod-aosp-camera-and-gallery/ ) ~can't post links yet...
Once upon a time the moto camera worked fine, but now everything works as described in the OP, apart from taking a picture, where upon I get the 'Unfortunately, camera has stopped', and a FC.
Flashing the ASOP camera again works perfectly, but I prefer the moto one, if it is possible to get it working?
@dhacker29 created a flashable zip to replace CM camera with the stock one, but its not in the CM11 OP so I have uploaded it to mega
https://mega.co.nz/#!7VBRhQSB!ANqt4QUScgdUsdzZQnc0HWQVKOpm9dK7Yk5r5Oey_vQ
I have flashed it on most ROMs and had no issue, but as always, do a backup just incase

Cheers for the share, plewis1981 ~ it worked perfectly!
And thank you dhacker29 for making it!
Yeah this one works perfectly, except for the slow-mo video mode, why doesnt seem to work at all.
Would love to know that too, I use the slow mo feature and on custom roms it does not work
Any ideas anyone ?

[Q] Nexus 5 Flashlight not working on stock except Paranoid Android

Hi experienced developers.
So, directly coming to the point... I have a hammerhead aka Nexus 5 16GB.
The phone works superb. No issue is reported till now. But one thing is eating my brain and I am damn frustated about it, is that the flashlight of the phone won't turn up or work on any firmware or stock rom. I tried every other rom, L Developer Preview, MIUI, Re flashed KTU84Q from Google's website and what not. I tried everything but the Flash won't work. Some apps in play store for Flashlights say error message that LED is not found. I have attached Screenshot of the same. So, in short no way could turn the flashlight except for one day when I tried Paranoid Android on my Nexus 5. I opened the app (fingers crossed) and kaboom.... FLASHLIGHT TURNED ON!!! I was hell surprised as to none of my attempts did turn on that light.. Not even Pure Stock Google firmware couldn't do so. But the default Flashlight app on PA do turn on the flashlight. I tried the Flashlight.apk file of PA on stock rom and it says "Unfortunately Stopped"
I am damn frustated and confused as to what shall I do. I can't use PA as my daily driver.
I need Stock Rom+Xposed with L Developer Preview on multi boot. Please help me developers.

Kernel isn't exactly stock, but close enough.
Paranoid Android's Flashlight app won't work on stock ROMs since it uses sysfs rather than camera functionality to turn on the flash.
Try taking the .apk out of a CyanogenMod 11 Nightly and see if that works.

Yeah... Sorry. I was first on stock kernel only. But then I installed MultiRom and flashed the custom kernel required by MultiRom. But guess what.... Flashlight won't turn on in either kernel. I tried Flashlight.apk from CyanogenMod 11 but no use.
Yeah.. I would like to tell you.... My camera doesn't work. The Camera app doesn't show on phone. I am able to open secondary camera from Lockscreen shortcut but the phone has no app for camera. I think it's camera is broken. If you can help... I'll be really really thankful to you.
Sounds like you did something wrong when flashing rooms.. Re flash stock ROM again

best camera for nexus 5

hello there first post so dont shoot me
im using nexus 5 about 4 years now as my daily driver and i tried many roms.
right now i have android 8.1 via liquidremix.
My biggest problem is camera. nexus 5 has a pretty ****ty camera right from the beggining but since nougat it starts to get annoying. i think it has to do with camera drivers.
can anyone enlight me wich version of android i must use for the best quality photos? is there any nougat or oreo roms that using their own drivers or marshmallow is the only way?
and if i must go to marshmallow i must use a factory image based rom or no?
please any specific rom recomendations will be very helpfull

I have a feeling that you use whatever camera comes with the ROM.
I have no problem with the camera, I use Google camera 3.2.xx, and even hdr works. ROM? AEX 8.1
I don't think there's any needs to go back to MM, but it's your choice.
