Still Worthing Buyimg - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

I always wanted a Pixel. I can get a new Pixel with 128gb internal-storage for a couple of hundred bucks. Is this phone still supported by Google for new updated?
Thank You,

They are supposed to be putting out security updates for another year, but -- right at the 2 year mark -- they did not release a monthly OS update for November.

I really love the pixel. I have had the note 8 and also have a Moto Z3 ATM and still use the pixel as my DD
Got mine on Craigslist a few weeks ago btw(128gb in great shape for 150)

Apparently, they are still planning on releasing updates for the Pixel: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78154864&postcount=18

Yeahs its worth it for sures

Yep it's a great phone if you care about software and camera in a compact package. The bezels haven't aged well but everything else is fire.

Just bought one used at $125 in good shape

I just got me and my wife one, but have to watch out for that battery. I have to replace both batteries. I like the power and speed in a compact size.

Should I still buy the OPO?

Hi!
Well, I got a Samsung Galaxy S4 as a gift and as much as I appreciate it, I'm not a fan of the Samsung brand because of their build quality (it improved in those 2014-end devices but I'm talking about the GS4). The GS4 is being sold by the main stores at 399€ so I'm planning to sell it for 320€/350€, buy the OnePlus One and even buy a case/skin for it.
Well, trading the GS4 for the OPO is a no brainer but I am thinking in selling the GS4, get the money and save it to spend it later on a better 2015 phone.
What should I do? Should I buy the OPO, should I buy another device or should I wait? I would buy the OPO without a doubt if it was some months before but after hearing all the confusion between OnePlus and Cyanogen, CM12s being promised to around this date and still being unreleased... Should I wait for a possible "OnePlus Two"? Should I buy a Nexus device? (I currently own a Galaxy Nexus)
I need some advice
You won't get $350 for your s4, check swappa.com for me easy place to sell and to get a realistic idea of what you'll get for yours. I've had a lot of phones and the 1+1 is far and away my favorite. Dev community is excellent, hardware is top notch, great speakers, beautiful screen, awesome battery life, it's really does everything perfectly. How long do you typically keep your devices, though? If you want to keep your next phone for more than a year, I'd say to wait and see what 2015 flagships bring.
Without a doubt if your interested, buy the phone! I've recently bought a Nexus 6 and the OPO is still one of my favorite phones of all time even compared to the Nexus 6!

Nah man, I can sell it for 350/320€ without a problem. Here in Portugal mobile contracts are rare, 95% of the population buys the phones carrier locked (which means we can only use that carrier's SIM cards in our phones) and the devices are expensive. GS4 is being sold at 399€ new in the big carriers so I can sure sell it for less 50 or 80 euros.
I have my Galaxy Nexus for almost 3 years and I don't change my devices often, maybe 3 to 4 years. I also can't spend over 500€ on a device so I don't have wallet for a HTC or a LG or a high end Samsung (even though they aren't the best price/quality choices, I'm just stating xd).
I would be sad if I bought the OnePlus One today and June or July comes and "OnePlus Two" comes at the same price, with better specs and the CM12s. But I don't also want to wait until OnePlus decides do reveal or not a new device. That's why I'm asking here, to know the thoughts of the ones who bought the OPO since they sure are better informed than me.
Definitely get it. I had motorola, samsung, nexus etc I even had the LG G3 before coming to the 1+. I love it, hands down the best phone I have owned and I wouldn't get rid of it till it is properly dead.

I wouldn't be sad, theres always going to be the 'next' follow up phone, even if you buy the 'newest' it doesnt take long for a successor to come along or at least the rumours. With the Oneplus One you are still getting great value for money, stable CM11S, CM12S due shortly (definitely), along with OxygenOS and lot of other custom ROMs to pick from. Not to mention the obvious like nexus-easy bootloader unlock and root.
You can also now get a OPO relatively easy, plenty of invites knocking about or just purchase directly every Tuesday. I imagine its going to be pretty hard to get hold of an invite for the Oneplus Two when its released, as I'm guessing it will be invite only for the first while, so factor that into your thoughts around waiting time/availabilty.
I've had the Galaxy S4, HTC One M8 and Nexus 5 all within the last 5 months and overall the OPO is better than them all. Theres no added bloat, no difficulty/warranty issues unlocking the bootloader, solid stock CM and as many custom ROMs as you like and the battery life is fantastic. In terms of the nexus 5, its basically a nexus 6 for those who were underwhelmed by the nexus 6, in terms of large (without being too large) screen, great battery life (non 2k screen), decent camera and very reasonable price.

Should I buy the Pixel XL Now? - April 2017

Hey everyone,
My Nexus 6 is at it's end. I'm losing 1% of battery life every two or so minutes. My battery lasts about 5 hours or so. I would prefer to get the XL from Google. It's still so damn expensive. Should I just pull the trigger and get it? Does anyone think there will be deals in a couple of months since the Pixel 2 will be coming out? I'm torn about what to do. If I get the Pixel now, will it be obsolete in a year? With insurance, the payments on the phone would be $40 per month putting the phone at $960. I'm just not sure if I should pull the trigger or wait it out. I've had the N6 for over two years already.
Any advice is welcome.
For what it's worth, I wouldn't shell out that much cash even spread out over time and even for a 128GB , much less for the 32GB. Although the ideal Pixel for me would be the XL 128GB, I settled for the non-XL 32GB because at the time (I know it's not likely now an option from anyone right now), $240 straight out for the Pixel 32GB was just too good to pass up. Personally, although I really hate not having a MicroSD slot or at least 128GB storage, I overall regret having bought two HTC 10s for $500 each the day before I became aware of the Pixel deal. If I had known just how much I would like the Pixel software (but I'm still rooted and on PureNexus ROM), I would have seen about canceling or returning the two 10s.
I may not be the wisest money spender but I'm just not willing to fork out that kind of money for any phone. I already told myself before I sprung for the 10 and the Pixel that if you just wait long enough a deal you can't refuse presents itself, and I re-learned that lesson just a day after buying the 10, which was a deal itself - just not as good a deal as I would have preferred.
The Pixel will not be obsolete in a year, though. If I were going to get one now, if I couldn't find a "can't refuse" deal on a brand new warrantied Google version (unless you don't care about root or can get a pre-7.1 - or was it pre-7.1.1? Verizon Pixel) elsewhere, make sure and check Swappa and buy from a well-rated seller.
When I looked out of curiosity a week or two ago, the Pixel XL 128 GB was a tiny bit cheaper than it used to be, although I don't know if it has gone back up in price since it's been revealed that the Pixel is now "discontinued" through some of the carriers that had it, although I don't know the details of that.
I know it sucks if there just isn't a choice to pay straight out for any decent phone, and so you might feel forced into payments, so of course there are other considerations.
My $20.02. Good luck with your choices.

Thank you sir. The down side is that the 32GB isn't even available through Google. I don't want to get it from Verizon because it's locked. I'm just nervous about waiting too long and have the XL be gone. I'm leaning towards getting it soon because even though it's expensive, it is a monthly payment.
Not having an SD slot is a bummer. I know I can't use a 32GB phone. I'll fill it quick. I've made 3 swappa purchases in the past. Two of them were bad deals. The prices on the Pixel range from 600 to 1200. That's a lot of cash up front where the monthly payments seem better to me.
I don't know what to do. If I buy one now, I have this feeling that in one or two months the price will drop and I'm going to kick myself in the ass. That said, I appreciate everything you've mentioned.
I presume you're not on VZW. In which case idk if I could justify the cost, knowing that it's already about 6 months old.
That said, I wouldn't go for anything less than 128gb. Apps are only getting bigger and bigger. Even with unlimited Google photos storage, you're still going to have apps and app data. You may want to have movies and such downloaded to your device.

I am on Verizon. I just didn't want to get it from them since it's locked. The difference in payments between the two is $4/month. If you buy the Pixel from Google now, do you still get unlimited storage?
Sorry for the double post. I bought it. Had to do it after seeing my phone go from 100 to 30% in four hours. Thread can be closed.

To answer your question, yes, the unlimited storage with full un(further)compressed quality is a Pixel perk, and doesn't depend on when you buy the Pixel, and you wouldn't even have to be the original owner/user of the Pixel. For that matter, it probably works for any additional users you would add to the phone via Android.

I did get it from Google. It said 3 to 4 weeks. I dont mind the wait.
Should have waited for pixel 2
Got mine 1/2 price during a vzw sale. There's no way I'd pay more than that because that's all it's worth. It's been the worst "phone" I've ever had in regards to weak signals and dropped calls.
I paid full price for a 128 non-XL. And I've been using Android since the G1, most of my phones had been Nexus phones, every single one of them I modified constantly. This Pixel is the ONLY phone I've been satisfied with. So price to me is irrelevant when it comes to satisfaction. I've wasted SO much more money trying to find the perfect phone for me, than the cost of the Pixel.

Are you buying the pixel 2 ?

My pixel works fine along with my Nexus 5x and 6. With the new pixel 2 around the corner are you buying it? I hate to be the stereotypical American who consumes in excess and buys things they don't need but I know ill resist for a month or 2 then cave in.

I'm getting sucked into reading the stories about the pixel 2. If I was practical, it would be hard to justify a new phone. What new features do I need that won't come from a software update? I do wish I had 64 gigs. Recently had to factory reset and that got me back down to 26 gigs used.

Of course I'm going to get it. However, there are a bunch of caveats and prerequisites in order to justify the purchase. And naturally a few different scenarios. Gift the Pixel to a family member that has a crappy S5 or any other Samsung device, sell it on Swappa, use it as a backup device in case something goes wrong with the Pixel 2 and you need to wait for a replacement, stuff like that. Personally, I'm in for the gifting and then it's justified right off the bat even though I still have a year left to pay it off. But the family member is on my VZW account so nothing it really changed in that regard. (wow, that S5 is a piece of junk, Yes, that's for all you Sammy trolls)
Then there's the price. I only paid $240 for the Pixel in the wee hours of Black Friday. I had a chance to depixel8 the device but chose not to. I had no intention of ever unlocking the bootloader or rooting so I just took the updates. I'd do the same thing here if the price were the same. Google never had a black Friday deal and I could not justify paying 7 bills since my 5x was working perfectly and still does. (running Android O beta, locked bootloader on that too) Bottom line for me is never buy it on any other day than BF and get the best price possible, locked or not. I fully expect VZW to keep the bl locked and I don't care if I can get the phone for $300 or close to it. I won't spend a nickel over $400 tax included. Since the Pixel and the XL are working so well and a lot of people are on a 2 year installment plan of sorts, I believe they will have some discounts on it during the holiday season. Just keep your eyes peeled since the deals are strictly for black Friday hours only. Come Saturday the deals are off the table.
PS I should save this post to remind myself of rational thought when the device is released.
I'm considering upgrading to a larger screen but I just switched to t-mobile and sadly Google only offers the Pixels to Verizon for resale. So unless I can get one on device payments I'll probably stick with my Pixel.
I can understand buying the Pixel over the Nexus. The Nexus always had that element that caused it to get laggy over time and stutter, but the Pixel is a massive step from the previous nexus 5x I had. All my phone are in working condition and i actually offered to loan someone whose phone stopped working my Nexus 5X.
The Pixel though hasent given me any issues. I think at the very least I'll wait until next year to buy it. It seems like the first batch of phones tend to have issues. I remember the first Pixels has that crackling speaker issue, but since this one actually works well I'll have to think about it myself. If I do maybe not until 2018
They are going to have to really nail it to get me to upgrade right away. This is a great phone.
Not sure yet, nothing wrong with this one, might wait for the pixel 3, this is just a great phone

I'd also expect the Verizon Pixel 2 to have deals during Black Friday. There are typically also good offers on carrier phones at times during November and December. I could have saved a bit by waiting longer to buy. I think the best offer in 2016 only lasted a few days.
https://slickdeals.net/f/9417827-be...-e-gift-card?src=SiteSearchV2_SearchBarV2Algo
Many of the Verizon offers have generally trended towards bill credits recently, where you have to buy their service for two years to get the price reduction, yet the Verizon S8 had a Device Payment Plan offer last month where the financed price was reported as $300+ less than retail.

No
Probably will wait until the 3, because my 1 is still in great shape
So got to add BT headphones to the mix too. Been wanting a pair anyway, this will probably force my hand. I have Grado now and they are amazing. I don't think they make BT yet so does anyone have some that are in the 100-200 range that are just killer?
I personally don't use bluetooth. Based on the renderings, I think I'll definitely wait at least for a bit. If it turns out to be just the Pixel with a few enhancements then it will be easier to pass. I was hoping for front facing speakers, but dosent seem to be happening. Also they are removing the headphone jack which I like. Something minor but should start being standard.....waterproofing, hopefully this new one is officially water resistant/proof.
It looks like they will have several versions or atleast 2 which is good. Everthing now seems to be 5.5"+, I cannot do these jumbo sized phones, I'm probably the only one, but I don't like excessively large phones. Hence why I got the small pixel.
Pixel 2 will be 5". As for BT I'd like to get rid of the cord if fidelity is as good. Waterproofing is not minor! Lol. That's almost a prerequisite at this point.

I'll have to probably update this post. If Google follows the Note 8 and prices the Pixel 2 at $900+, then that's a definite "no" for getting it. Beyond unacceptable. I'll keep the phones I have or switch to a GSM carrier and buy a One Plus.
When you throw in taxes and optional insurance, you are looking at a total over $1000
imma skip to the pixel 3. it's not worth it considering how good the pixel/pixel xl are to date

Ouch! Never owned anything but a Google phone. Im starting to rethink this.

Google Pixel 3 XL UK Order

Who else ordered the phone and what are the delivery dates?
I ordered the 128GB, White, delivery showing as 02-05 November.
Ordered from Google Store
I have the note 9 512gb now, and I am passing on the Pixel 3 XL.
Delivery will be 1st November according to carphonewarehouse, and aside from the notch, the RAM and Storage aren't enough for the price, Pixels struggle with closing apps in the background, and to add to that, I actually think they battery capacities and the phone designs are just deal breakers for me. Added to the fact it has no headphone jack.
I would fill the phone in 6 months and that's unacceptable for £969. EDIT: with the added emphases on the motion shot and the no blinking thing, would probably only take 3 or 4 months to full 128gb.
Google will delete all your full resolution photos when the Pixel 2 years unlimited storage runs out as well so that's not a long term option.
As for trying the Pixel 3 normal, the price jump over the Pixel 2 is too much. IT's even worse value.
I am pretty sad google made such a hash of the Pixel 3 and 3 XL.

Wow
Pixels struggle to close apps in the background - not on mine
Delivery 1st November - that's uk launch
Headphone jack - usb c converter included
If you can fill 128 gig of storage then you should probably look at some other type of storage
I believe the high rez photos are for life, they wont delete, you just won't be able to add to them after that.
I just got quoted a VERY similar contract price for a new 3XL from EE for what I'm currently paying for my Pixel XL
looks like US will be getting them few weeks earlier than us
Vodafone currently only have prices for 64 storage option.
Been out of contract with them paying £12.50 a month sim only and deal wasn't great the offered me. Will be transferring to EE. Went for the 60GB Max option.
Breakdown cost came out at £30 up front for the device and £54.40 a month 24 month.
Despite my opinions on the gigantor notch I could not resist the temptation of stock android even though I am coming from a OnePlus 6, ordered the Pixel 3 XL 64gb Black from John Lewis.
What swung me was the fact you can hide the notch which makes it look like a Pixel 2 XL which ain't a bad thing and the Pixel 3 was just a bit too small for my liking.
EE - 64gb white 8gb data and free BT sports pre-ordered
currently on pixel OG XL 128GB and doubtful if I've EVER been over 30gig on the storage front
my average data has been about 5.5G/month so no need to have much more (wifi at work and at home)
Hey lads, i'll be gettin the xl when it's out too, waitin to see if get any freebies later, so far pre-order doesn't make sense, 3 weeks wait and we gettin nothin on top,

How are people managing to fill these phones up?
I've not filled my 32Gb Pixel XL up once thanks to Google photos.
I've ordered a 64Gb 3 XL in black - expected 1st November from Three.
Unlimited data is £54/month (not for everyone I know). Haggle with them, I got the £99 upfront wiped off
im paying a small fortune for mine on ee but itll be worth it im runnin on 1gb of space free roughly most weeks on my gen 1 xl
got my hands on the xl 3 in the metro centre ee store last night (demo only) boy she is nice !
Pulled the trigger and ordered a white 64GB from Google
Temptation is too great this time of year, as it's been every year
Coming from a 2 XL, very much looking forward to an improved screen

There are a few that are on £140 with no bids and not much time left

Wow that's pretty crazy! I'm betting three.wont ship mine til the 1st Nov...

Worth it in 2021/22?

Looking to get one of these for my daughter. She broke her Nokia 7.1 display and asked for something that takes better pictures if we're replacing her phone anyway. I had Gcam running on that Nokia but I think an actual Pixel would do her better, and just run smoother too.
With the current prices for used/refurbed, I think a P3 XL would be great, even if there are no more updates for it.
What do you guys think? Any versions to avoid or issues to look out for? Someone mentioned that battery life is iffy especially on a used model, but she's not a power user (mostly music, some messages and calls and occasional selfies with friends- no social media or browsing).
Good idea or bad idea?

I think it's a good idea, with some caveats. Excellent for the mentioned needs, but as said, even if it's described as 'Mint', odds are the battery has been cycled hundreds of times.
This is listed on ebay for 219, brand new, unlocked. I've bought from that seller and they are reputable for sure. At least going that route you won't have to worry about the battery.
Yeah no more official updates from google, but Lineage will continue to make builds for this device for (probably) years to come.
Absolutely worth considering.
Things to look out for - a locked bootloader. Verizon and AT&T phones have locked bootloaders. You can't install LOS with a locked bootloader, so no more updates for those phones. Also, when sellers say the phone is unlocked, they mean the SIM is unlocked, not the bootloader.
I'd go with a new, unused phone if you can still find one. Besides battery on a used phone, there is this problem to consider. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/fix-pixel-3-qusb_bulk_cid-xxxx_sn-xxxxxxxx.4205331/
I just had my Pixel 3 battery replaced at uBreakIfix for $100. The original battery lasted 2 years. I could have nursed it along a few months more, but decided it was time.
Also consider a new Pixel 2, if you can find one. I bought a new Pixel 2 XL a couple of months ago. It was much cheaper than the Pixel 3s were going for.

Yikes, the battery bit that hard over 2 years, huh?
I bought a Galaxy S10 used that still has decent battery, and my LG G7 which is around the same generation as the Pixel 3 still can go all day. Is the Pixel battery just more prone to conking out early? She could use my LG but honestly I sold her on the Gcam, dual selfies and unlimited google photo storage (she's been using compressed storage for photos since it was free on all phones, and missed the memo about losing all her storage space earlier this year).
Here's the thing:
If I get it from Swappa, it comes with a 3-month Mint SIM trial prepaid. She's on Google Voice so I tend to swap plans around whenever there's a deal, so that knocks about $45 off the price of the phone since I'd be otherwise paying that $15 a month elsewhere. Still worth getting new over that deal? There are pretty mint ones (9 out of 10 condition) for under $150 there, so total would be ~$100 after service discount.

The battery would still last me all day, but it would discharge very fast once it got under 30%. I figured I'd rather replace it than risk losing the phone at a bad time.
As for price, it all depends on what deals you find. I paid $120 for the new Pixel 2 XL a couple of months ago. I get my service for $10 a month (with 500 Mb of data) from RedPocket. I'm quite satisfied with those numbers.
That's a good deal. Can't find a Pixel 2 right now new. I was paying $10 a month for 1GB of data previously but she's constantly running out from google photos and spotify, so was planning on moving up to $15 for 4GB on Mint anyway. Especially right now, buy 3 months get 3 free. So essentially 7.50 a month for the next 6 months!
However... if I get the free sim from Swappa its probably only 3 months. Either way, a good deal. If I buy new from Ebay (even if I could find it), I'd still have to pay for a Mint sim

I recently bought a 'Mint' Lg G8 on swappa, and it 'looked' pretty close to mint, very light small scratches on back. But when I modified the rom so I could see the 'svc menu', the battery stat indicated it had been fully cycled about 280 times. Research indicates a battery should last from 300 to 500 cycles. And just like dcarvil, this G8, when it gets to about 30%, it' drops fast. Incredibly fast.
Other phones I've bought on swappa that were 'open box', actually were exactly that, virtually new. Now we see sellers describe it as 'open box'... without the box!!
It's all anecdotal, some good, some bad, we take our chances.
cheers, good luck.
The Pixel 3 XL is still a great phone and should last a while. The processor is about the same as the Pixel 5.
I would recommend looking on Swappa as it is stricter than Ebay on quality and even a Fair Swappa phone is quite good and should describe the defects in the listing.
On swappa, the cheapest verizon and sprint 3 XL are under $100, but the Google or Tmobile version (which can be boot-loader unlocked and rooted are up to $150. Also notice that at $200 and above you can even get the Pixel 4 XL. Also, the 3a XL may be a cheap option, but it has slower processors so not as good, but still better than the old Nokia 7.1.
I definitely recommend one where the boot-loader is unlock-able as it opens up many options. To stay completely stock or unlock and use any OS build she would like.

I found a swappa 128 gb in good condition for $120, and it's supposed to be the Google version so bootloader unlockable!
Just ordered it. I've heard mixed things about the latest A12 roms, so I like the idea of keeping it unlockable for customs. Are there are any good aftermarket roms that stay close to stock re: network function (VOLTE)?
I've have bad experience with Lineage based roms in the past because networks like Tmobile where I live rely on VOLTE for decent calling support.

bad experience with lineage because u need volte? Volte works perfectly on lineage, sorry but your comment in that regard makes no sense. I had a pix 3 with lineage and volte and vowifi worked perfectly on it.
cheers
Well not on LG or Samsung devices that I've owned. Or Moto.
This is my first pixel, maybe it's different?

Well yes it is different. LG and Sammy for sure have proprietary IMS implementations, I'm not sure about Moto. What that means is that if the proprietary implementation can't be ported, then things like volte will only work on stock.

VoLTE works fine on my P3 with LOS 18.1.
