If you are getting ads, it's from something that you installed, whether you're aware of it or not.
Try this, boot your device to safemode, this allows only the system apps to boot without loading the apps that you installed yourself, if it boots and runs without ads popping up, it's definitely being caused by something that you installed. In this case, you can try uninstalling apps one at time, using the device for a while after each uninstall to see if the ads keep popping up. When they stop popping up, you know they were caused by the last app that was uninstalled before the ads stopped.

Ok thanks a lot for your help. I was able to find the app that was making those ads.

[Q] Cyanogenmod 10 using Gemini app problem

Just got Cyanogenmod 10 on my tab and love it. But got a few problems i need to figure out. I still have a problem with apps auto-starting and have used Gemini-app to stop this. But now with the new Cyanogenmood it says that i need to enable USB-debugging. But this option is not possible on my tab. I see the options in settings but they are grey and there is no way to check any box.
Anybody have the same problem???
Ps: Also have problem with youtube-app crashing and a weird thing with XDA site when i start a page here sometimes my utorent-client starts to run.
Im not on the same tab as you but I use Startup manager to kill unwanted apps from starting. Never had any issues with it , free as well.
Startup Manager - Clean up your android system from system startup!
Startup Manager aims at helping disable/enable startup items from system boot for Android devices including smartphones and tablets. To disable an item from system startup, uncheck the application from the list (recheck to restore and it will start again). For other item that do not start with system boot, please use “Customize” to add and enable it to start with system boot.

Try to see the on/off switch in the most up right of screen to enable setting change
About youtube, try delete cash, delete dalvik cash and fix permissions in cwm (no factory reset) if not, so try reflashing gapps again for then try to update youtube via market
If not so try app like tubemate (search google not google play), it is alternative to youtube and allow recording also
Regarding xda try another torrent client or delete cash of xda app and torrent client from setting/apps

Seems that app works. Will try some more. thanx dude

Ads pop up everywhere on my phone

Hey does anyone know why I have advertisements popping up on my phone all the time?
It's random and occurs in all apps and I checked for virus with a scanner and it doesn't say anything. Has anyone had this issue before and know a solution? Idk what I clicked that might have caused this bug. Ads usually are games that lead me to the play store and not anything explicit (if that helps)

Start in safe mode see if they still show up
If it is in games, if you're rooted try downloading an ad blocker. Since they blocked it from the Play Store you will need to Google it.

You have something installed doing it. What did you last install before it happened?

Still safe mode will disable all third party apps and any potential malware on your phone
think of it as a fail safe boot like how Windows has it
Heres how to get into it
https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2852139?hl=en
how to get out of it? just shutdown your phone as you normally would and start it back
This is odd. Have you downloaded something from outside the play store? Do you have unknown sources enabled? If you didn't, then something is horribly wrong here. If you did download and install any APK, delete it.
If this is something from the Play Store itself, we have to report it.
To be completely safe, as others said, run the phone in safe mode. If they still pop up, flash the factory image...something went wrong. If they don't, it's an app.

There is also another trick that I found some days ago.....restart the phone and then let the google logo go, when the boot animation starts keep pressing the volume down button untill u get to the lock screen....ur safe mode should be there

Please take a screenshot of such an ad to help us see what the problem might be. Also have a look at installed apps to see which one may be causing it.(preferably list all 3rd party apps you have installed, or simply a couple of screenshots)
Also as mentioned you should try safe mode(long press the "turn off" button in the power menu), to see if it still happens.(if not, it is one of your 3rd party apps.)
You could try and use a nifty app from the Play store called AirPush detector. It will look through your phone to look through which apps might be showing you unwanted advertisements.

It was definitely an app that you installed, there are some apps in the playstore that if you install them will show ads. This is sketchy but I guess they want to make money somehow....
this is how many free games/apps stay free

Popup ads? I understand ads in the game, but I've never seen ads that pop up in system apps. That's not allowed per the google play TOS. I'll be sure to report them if you give me the names of them. I have apps on there too, and most of them don't have ads, but the ones that do are always unobtrusive.

Oh I can't remember what app it was it was on my nexus 4, I installed something and everytime I would hit home it would popup like a sys warning message but it would be an ad.
I would run a virus/malware scan and stop using questionable apps.

This. People keep complaining about Android having viruses when they're downloading all kinds of things like "free smileys" from random sites. 99.9% of the time, Google Play has clean apps, but there are still some apps that Google needs to filter out better. They need to completely ban air push and other notification ads or really anything that doesn't stay within the app.
EDIT: This wasn't meant to bash the OP. I'm talking about other people, and hopefully the OP didn't download this kind of stuff.

yea. these apps open in the background. and since they are "open", their ads pop up. these arent the same kinds of ads that open in the app itself, theyll open in the status bar or just pop up. again, they are usually included in free apps/games that are usually of lower quality.

Wow. That's dumb. Oh well, I would never download any of those shady apps anyway, and neither would most people, but I still wish Google would have a bit more strict guidelines.

[Q] Is it possible to remove adware without removing the app

This is probably a stupid question but...
I've been trying for the past 3 days to download this app from the Google play store, but it says it's incompatible with my device (Xperia SP).
I've used Market Helper and it didn't work.
I've tried editing my build.prop and it bricked my phone (lol) I recovered it but lost all my contacts
Anyway, I've resorted to sideloading it. The problem is, since I've installed it I'm getting push ad notifications and popups on my home screen, browser etc.
So, is there anything I can download to stop the adware or somehow remove the adware without uninstalling said app?
Thanks

That makes no sense. What do you mean by removing that without uninstalling ? Your statement is self contradictory.
If you are rooted you can freeze that app using Titanium Backup.
Why don't you try AdAway ?

Hi, I mean I want to keep the app but I also want to stop it from putting ads on my phone and notification bar as well.
I just downloaded AdAway and turned off notifications from that app in the settings so hopefully that will work.
Thanks a lot

You are welcome.AdWare is supposed to block and remove ads and notifications on your phone. If you are still getting ads or the app itself is putting ads and notifications then it's not serving the purpose either it's not working or malfunctioning (broken codes).
Is that an Ad-supported app ?If it is,then that's not an issue.AdAway will block those ads.

You've probably installed some application not from Google Play. You should check for any sketchy apps running in the background.

Im a complete newby with android. The only suspiciou thing i can find is configAPK? This has no icon either.
I found this in Settings > Apps
Provide a list of all 3rd party apps you installed.
ES File Explorer is one of the apps that does this, uninstall it if found.
If the pop-up shows up press the recent button in navigation bar so you can see the title of the application.
BTW, try this ad blocker. It worked for all applications on my phone. No root needed.

Factory reset your phone and in future only download apps from Play Store. This will solved a lot issue since you are new to Android.
Also read description and user feedback 1st before download.
I had loads of ads popping up, but now I'm rooted with Adhell, Adguard and Adblockplus installed.
that = bye bye ads..lol.:good:
Matt
I encountered a similar problem and it wasn't related to downloading an application. Somehow got directed to one of those click here to win web pages, then shortly after a similar ad would pop up randomly when browsing on Chrome. Since this is the first phone I had without adaway didn't realize websites I use to go to had this redirection.
I think what happens is either a cookie or a notification is made on the browser app. After reseting the phone, installing adhell, disabling notifications for Chrome/Samsung internet haven't encountered the problem.
You could install the official AdBlock extension for the Samsung browser...
I got loads of ads pop up after installing movie hd
Caused by Samsung
This is without a doubt caused by samsung. I "Upgraded" from a nexus 6p to a s8 active last week and actually have less third party apps than before. I NEVER had full screen pop up ads before the switch. Same carrier, same number, same Google account, etc.
I just can't figure out how to stop it yet.

Clicking on X means you're just deleting it on the screen, but it will appear anywhere and anytime, because you didn't shut them down completely ,they're really annoying
S8+ Adds

I deleted Messenger then reinstalled and Wullah! Adds gone

configAPK sounds like the source of your problem as it is a scam apk uninstall.
Opt Out
Google for opt out and chose to opt out all companies from DAAC (Digital Advertising Alliance of Canada)
It take a few tries to complete for all companies but it worth trying.

I had the same problem with my note 8. What you have to do is go into settings and open up your app list. At the very bottom of the list of apps you'll see something that doesn't have an icon. It's a piece of adware from one of those popup ads that says you want something from Amazon. Just delete it. No need to factory reset

I imagined there HAD to be a way to ID the source of these annoying ads that pop-up when no apps are open.
But where is the "Recent button" and the "Navigation bar"? I should know, I've owned several Galaxy S series phones over the years.

I wonder if that is the answer. I have NEVER downloaded an apps not found in the playstore and I started getting these adds several months ago

how do i get rid of a pop up ad?

This pop up ad appears many times a day.
Can't figure where its coming from and how to get rid of it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Download Malwearbytes and run a scan. Looks like adware.
Malwarebytes found nothing ugg
What happens if you go to your pull down from top notifications? I'd think it will show the running process. Hold your finger on it and should go to the 'notifications' setting for the app.
Start deleting questionable apps you downloaded recently.
I had an update recently installed on my Samsung s8. When I tried to play my music, my phone said I had to download Samsung Music Player, since then I've had ads popping up every 5 minutes. Every ad has the System UI logo and an app that I downloaded to monitor app usage confirmed it also. When I go into advanced setting or admin settings the buttons are blocked. Some say to delete any unusual apps, but how can I tell which apps or stock apps I really need?
Which music player did you install?
I agree with the Malwarebytes, you might also want to check out your skin theme. Some have sneaky ways of rolling out ads to your phone.
