how i can manage the duration of the notifications on always on display ? - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

i'm using oneplus 6 with stock ROM. i'm using always on display and really love it. but i've got a problem with the notifications.
notifications appear on the screen and stays 4 or 5 seconds and then gone. i love seeing the notification on the screen without touching anything but it lasts in just 5 seconds. isn't there are setting to change this ? except for installing a custom ROM ?

sorry i just figured out that it isn't AOD that i love. it is lift-up display. unfortunately oneplus does not allow us to use AOD with software update, now knowing why.
but my question is still valid. is there a way to change the notification showing duration on the screen while screen is off ?

Yes there is! I use the Substratum Theme "OnePlus AOD Modifier" on OP6 with OOS 9.0.2. It allows you to set the notification time and also the lift up time.

Honor 8 Nougat and EMUI: Likes and Unlikes

I have the FRD-L04 with Nougat and updated to EMUI 5.0 OTA.
Been using this update for 3 days now. So far, I have this hate/love relationship with it.
Changes that I like:
-Allows built in call recording (in EMUI 4.1, any third party app wasnt able to successfully record calls and even if it did, the other end was very very low in volume)
-App drawer
-Pedometer on lock screen
Changes that I dislike/hate:
-Notifications when pulled down, won't show more than 1 line. For example, if someone messaged me on messenger or whatsapp, I can only see ONE line of text vs before where I can pinch and drag down to see at least 4 or 5 lines of text.
-system apps are now white in the background. For example clock, voice recorder, calculator now have a "light" background where as before it was a black/dark background. And there is no way to change it.
-notification icons do not show on status bar when lock screen is on, you must unlock phone to see this.
Any suggestions to any of the unlikes above?
use floatify to get better notifications and a theme can change backgrounds to black

My only issue with Floatify as a lockscreen is that there's a delay between when the screen turns on and when it loads. It's not awful, it's just not instant. As a result, I switched to just floating notifications on lockscreen instead of Floatify lock screen.
Do you experience this issue as well?
EMUI have a theme engine, you can use the Material theme to change the look. https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/themes Some themes aren't fully compatible with EMUI5 yet, but try the dark CM14 one for starter.
I distinctly remember if I try to expand the 1 line notification in EMUI 4.1, it lets you 'allow the app' which then lets you expand the notification, not sure if it's an issue EMUI5, it seems fine for me.
Likes:
-It sucked less than EMUI 4.1.
Dislikes:
-It's not stock Android.

Not 100% sure of your problem but I use floating on lock screen as well
I actually miss the pull down with notifications separate from quick settings.
Presses seem to not be registered as well. I feel like I press something and it sometimes takes a few before it responds.

mostly just negatives for me...
- I can no longer reply to messages from notification with Hangouts. Click on Reply launches Hangout instead of letting you reply inline.
- They still did not add back the missing function with Do Not Disturb function. On AOSP, when you turn it on, there's option of having it automatically turn off after a certain amount of time of your choice or when the next Alarm clock goes off.
- Bluetooth with my car is completely broken after Nougat so I had to revert back to Marshmallow.
- Wifi/Cellur data connection seems to take a while to 'wake up' after the phone goes to sleep for a while.
- Google Voice is broken.

Steps to reproduce:
Lock screen and turn off display
Press power button to turn on display
There's a maybe 100-500ms delay where you will see Huawei's default Magazine Unlock lockscreen before Floatify loads. If you've just recently viewed your lock screen, and repeat steps 1-2, Floatify's lockscreen will load instantly.

Unfortunately that doesn't work for those of us with corporate email accounts, screen lock is mandatory, and enforced by the device administration service (in this case Exchange synchronized through Gmail app). I can live with a short delay, it's not a deal breaker since Floatify is a significant improvement over the broken Magazine Unlock, and I only actually use my lockscreen on rare occasions due to the convenience of FPS unlock and screen on.

hmm that sucks :/
In reply to a few things mentioned above, to share my experience:
Bluetooth works fine, seamlessly reconnected to my car after update. (Isolated issue perhaps)
No issues with touch slow downs or unresponsive taps. (Isolated issue -- maybe apps installed with poor Nougat support?)
Eliminating the split notification panel and returning to AOSP Nougat style is a huge improvement. 90% of the time you're 1 swipe away from the content you want, and for the other 10%, you're only 1 additional swipe away. I also use the button configuration that has the notification shade pulldown in the right most nav postion.
While Google Voice may not work, you can make and receive calls through Hangouts using your GV number. For most people, the VOIP aspect is fine, although for some edge cases some may want to use Voice to make calls without a network signal.
Quick reply works for me when receiving and replying to Hangouts messages.
Not being able to expand notifications past 1 line -- I only have this problem so far on the stock Messaging app, I get multi-line expandable notifications for everything else.
What apps are only showing 1 line of text in the notifications?
Hi guys, first post. I am still enjoying the Honor 8.
Couple of niggles since updating to 5.0 that haven't been addressed previously, hopefully someone will have a solution.
1. Using WhatsApp I used to get the profile picture of the person msging me appear in the status bar, this was a cool little touch. Now I just get the standard WhatsApp voicebubble.
2. The app switch "square button" apps now display only vertically, I liked them scrolling horizontally, anyway of changing this.
Thanks all.
The Wifi calling feature is still not available. That is a shame!
The ROG mode is not enabled, even though I can turn the power saving with lowered resolution on in another setting interface. It is just not working as expected. That is strange.
When I use screen off and lock app and unlock using the finger print scanner it now makes me enter my lock screen password. So now I have to use my power button to shut my phone off if I want to wake my phone to the home screen using the finger print scanner.

You can use the stock integrated Screen lock widget and when you unlock your phone with fingerprint no password required

I can confirm #1, although in my case it was Hangouts and Slack where I was seeing the profile icons. #2 is the way the Android AOSP recent apps have looked since 5.0 Lollipop in 2014, and for the most part even since 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in 2011. Huawei made significant modifications to the recent apps list in EMUI that were largely unpopular with the user base who preferred and was used to the way Recents worked for the past 6 years. You'll get used to it over time, it's a familiarity thing. If you're not used to AOSP or AOSP based ROMs like CM, Lineage, etc, it's a bit of a shock. Most OEMs also kept the AOSP-style Recents (LG, etc) even in their UI skins.
An additional issue I've noticed: When disconnecting from a charger, it always shows a popup with the battery percentage that has to be dismissed via button tap. I can't find a way in settings to disable this, has anybody else found it?
nice to know! still, annoying to ditch my pretty widget!

Which themes have the black notification backgrounds because the ones I've tried (via link provided) don't!
I'm on FRD-L04 and I cannot find any screen lock widget I don't think my phone has one. My honor 5x had one but this honor 8 never had one not even when it was marshmallow. What version of honor 8 do you have?
NEVERMIND I found it lol .
Anyway my opinion of the EMUI 5 update is that it is just a little less crappy than EMUI 4.1 The reviews made it sound like it was going to be this game changer when it's basically the same thing with a revamped notification pulldown and a few added features in settings. I really hope that we can get a functional custom ROM for this phone soon but without Huawei helping devs out with the proper stuff I don't see that happening anytime soon.
How long do these roll outs take? I am up to date according to software and still on Marshmallow. I even used the HI app

Notification popup with preview on AOD.?

Hi all I've just made the switch again from iOS to Android last Android being a note 3.
Really loving the s8+ such a nice device. One thing I do miss from iOS is whenever I get any notification the screen turns on with the notification and a small preview.
At the minute I keep missing emails as all I get is a icon with no preview on the always on display.
Is there anyway of having all notifications popup and either turn the screen on with the notification (Samsung bubble popup) or have a preview on the AOD
Thanks

Yes there is.... Just turn off AOD and install for free from playstore "glimpse notification".It just do exactly what you want. I had it on s7 edge, Note 7 and now on S8+ and is working perfectly with more less battery consumption from AOD. You will not see any deference in you battery consumptiont. Just activate it, give him all permissions deactivate app notification (you only need notification from all other apps) and from settings choose as white list which apps you want to turn screen on (to show notifications) and click to led notification light to work together, run the test and you are done.
It's working perfect and all the times
Thanks I'll check it out
Just having a play with this and it works well. I do like the always on display though. Will this work with that still enabled?
Thanks

I think that yes it must work...just try it out, but maybe with this 2 activated you will notice deference in battery consumption

Pixel 2 lockscreen questions...

Is there a way to have the Ambient Display show notifications, but not the lock screen? I like seeing that there is a notification while the phone is laying there, but I hate having a long scroll of email and other things showing once I wake the phone.
Second, is there a way to adjust the lock screen time out? Seems to default to like 5 or six seconds. I would like to lengthen that by a bit, but don't see a setting.
Thanks!

You can turn off lock screen notifications in:
Settings - Security & location - Lock screen preferences-on the lock screen
I don't know how adjusting that setting affects Ambient display though. You should experiment with it.
There is no way to adjust screen timeout on the lockscreen or Ambient display.

Yeah, I shut off notification on the lock screen but it also turns off the notification icons on the ambient display. I like those on, just not the ones on the lock screen.

I guess the definitive answer is: No, you cannot have Ambient display notifications on and lock screen notifications off.

Customize Notifications?

Hey all,
I'm so used to all the features of Light Flow that I didn't realize how much I depended on it. Since the 3 does not have an LED, I'm looking for an alternative app to manage my notifications. I want to be able to choose the notification sound and the vibration pattern per app.
Light Flow does this but not without requiring a persistent notification. Normally you'd be able to avoid this by installing Light Flow Legacy, but it does not show up in the app store on the Pixel 3.
Does anybody have any recommendations?
Thanks
Go to apk mirror and download light flow legacy that way. Let us know how it goes. I really hate the lack of notification LED, but I'm not willing to go as far as you to customize the vibrations etc.

Already tried this. It doesn't seem be on there.
I've been using Light Manager. It displays customized colored icons on the screen in place of the LED, with AOD turned off. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would.

Since there is no LED, we have no way of knowing if my phone is charging when plugged in without turning on the screen. Does light manager have a solution for this too?

I tried it and it looks like the default lock screen prevents the icons from displaying. Do you have your screen set to stay off when new notifications come in or is there something else you changed in either the app or system settings? Sorry for hijacking the thread with all the questions, but this lack of LED makes my phone useless while the screen is off.
Yes I have always on display off, and new notifications off. Double tap and lift for notifications I still have on though.

What other settings do you have? My phone isn't waking up with Light Manager with AOD/new notifications off and double tap/lift for notifications on. I do not have a lock screen enabled nor does it work with lock screen (swipe) enabled.
The "tests" aren't working either.

Does this require you to double-unlock to get to your phone, or is there someway around that?

That got it working. I have to tap the screen once, home/back button then shows, then double tap to get to the home screen.
Yeah I use fingerprint unlock and realize it requires it being done twice. We need a cleaner solution.

A cleaner solution was the $0.03 LED that Google removed from the phone! It shouldn't be this hard to tell if my phone is charging.
If I wanted a useless notification system, I would've purchased an iPhone!

Always on display

Hi,
I see no option for the always on display which I thought was integral to miui 12. As such I see no notification icons or clock when the phone is idle. Can someone confirm if this is normal and if so how I can enable some sort of notification function so I can see what notification belongs to what without having to wake the phone? Many thanks
This phone screen is not AMOLED hence there is no always-on display. Lock screen shows notifications though.

Thanks. indeed; yes I read that.
Coming from the Mi9SE I'm used to seeing what notification is what, without having to pick up the phone. Incidentally my old Motorola had an IPS panel and that still managed to show me icons in daydream mode all be it in black and white. If all POCO X3 users get is a black screen, then I guess that is that, but it's a feature I really miss. Any recommendations with regards to app/workaround ?
I am missing motorola active display too
And android stock... I can't appreciate miui
No. display is not amoled.

No workaround for this. In order to light up a small part of the display needed for the AOD, the complete backlight has to turn on, which significantly drains the battery (as if the whole screen was on).
So the solution is to buy an AMOLED screened phone.
I did notice however that near the camera, in some apps it has a notch or a black bar that really seems to have the screen off
