9.0.2 - hotspot 5ghz doesn't work - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

Hi,
As per subject, has anyone else got issues when activating a hotspot at 5ghz? 2.4ghz works fine, 5ghz doesn't.
I didn't have any problems when running 5.1.11
Thanks.

Hmm I think I saw this today on my phone. I tried to connect to hotspot, then it disappeared (on network on my laptop). Switched hotspot off and on a few times, it didn't appear again. Changed to 2.4Ghz and it showed up on laptop and was able to connect. I'm on latest Beta OOS.

Exactly. It works fine @ 2.4ghz but it just doesn't @ 5ghz. I can't even see the network.
Maybe someone else can comment on this.
Shall we report this bug?

what ROM are you on? OOS?

5 GHz wifi hotspot working perfectly for me on OB 6 + xXx 2.9.8.

I tried disabling 2.9.8 in magisk but it doesn't make any difference.

OB meaning Open Beta right plus the magisk ROM kind of thing xXx?

This is happening all the time for me as well but I'm still on 9.0.0

Yes, that's right: Open Beta 6 + xXx 2.9.8 ( see here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...xxx-nolimits-1-0-speed-ram-optimized-t3799167) + I forgot to mention: kernel blu spark r51 (https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/development/kernel-t3800965)
All the best !

I know I'd be annoyed if this doesn't work on my OP6, but I have to ask.. I can barely hit 25 down on T-mo when I'm out and about.. what's the benefit of using 5GHz over the 2.4GHz band for this purpose?

@joesee Overlapping channels at 2.4GHz in urban territories.
This is how it should look:

If it looks like in the 2nd picture, you'll probably get up to nothing over the 2.4GHz network. So you have to use 5GHz.

Ok, thanks. I thought about heavily used channels, but doesn't most WiFi euqipment now auto select channels based on the least amount of activity? OR does it only scan for crosstalk once then not actively manage channel selection once linked? I used to keep up with this stuff, but not since I changed careers. My thought was the 5GHz transmitted with much less power and the performance drop off was astronomical - especially with low powered devices like cell phones.

Yes omg. I'm so glad I'm not alone with this issue, exactly same as yours.
My 5GHz hotspot turns on but no device is able to see it. 2.4GHz working fine. Only happened after installing pie.
Some stuff:
I have factory reset my phone and completely reinstalled OS but the issue is persistant.

me too doesn't work

Just wondering, how many of you use adaway?

WiFi drop on 5.1?

It's a couple of times i unlock my phone and i notice the wifi has disconnected, then it riconnects itself. It also happened at first flash of 5.1, right after the setup wizard.
Any known WiFi drops bugs on 5.1?
I am using Cataclysm + EX.
I am not able to provide any adb logcat because it doesn't seem to happen all the times, sorry.
It's becoming a week known issue.
Seems to be a fault in the Wi-Fi settings where the phone is not keeping the Wi-Fi on when the phone sleeps (even though it's set to do that).
I would go back to an older version (5.0.1) until these retards rectify.
I'm having the same problem.
Anyone got a solution yet?
Bump.
The real issue (at least for me) is that when the phone sleeps and the wifi drops, it enables data network, and I have not unlimited data plan...
How is possible nobody is talking about that wifi behavior ?!
Happened once or twice but that's it.
Someone on G+ that had our same issue said he turned off automatic wifi freq (wifi > advanced) and the drop never happened again.. yet.
That's not a proper fix but better than nothing.

I think the solution is "use vibrate mode on". Get your device to vibrate mod and test it.

Connected, no internet WiFi problem after Nougat update - BTU

Hello guys!
After Nougat update, the WiFi connection stops from time to time. A exclamation mark appears on WiFi sign and internet is not working. If i reconnect everything is ok a while. I wiped, but i still have this problem. I tested on 2 different routers.
Anyone else with this? Solutions?

Have you tried assigning the phone a static IP?

This was a useless recommendation. There're too many people with an issue and this shouldn't be a problem. Especially when the same device and routers has no problem befor nougat and then continuous problems after update.

More like off shore tech support. At least you didn't recommend factory reset of the guys phone.
But seriously? Troubleshooting? It seems you know the meaning, but not the steps. If you build some before, after, and comparitive context to the users situation, you may have come to a different conclusion.
To the poor soul that gets here with a question burning in everyone's mind, "why me?" Go to Samsung and complain, get a new phone and viola, problem passed on. Especially if you just got it. There are a bunch of issues that you may also be unlucky to have in addition to the WiFi struggling to accept what it thinks as a weak internet connection.
Context:
I did not have any of these issues pre-Nougat;
Nothing change at home, work, and I assume the other locations either;
After the update I factory reset hoping for resolution;
Nope. Purely ignored defect from Samsung...
In addition I suffer from loudspeaker audio cutting out on YouTube videos, which is resovled if you go to a music player and play a few seconds of a song and then go back to the video. Must be the static IP need... Which even if it resolved the issue is still not a resolution! Are you going to assign static IPs everywhere you go? Common dude.
I have the exact same wifi connected, but no internet problem on AT&T S7. It connects if i toggle wifi off and on, but this is annoying

I had this problem in the past.
What I did was look up the APN settings for my phone with a specific carrier.
Then I went into settings and created a NEW APN with those exact settings.
You then have to save it, select it, and reboot your phone.
It solved my problem, which was an APN that had gotten corrupted.

Sprint and hotspot option/root?

I know I had modify one line in one file to allow wifi tethering but my question is, since it appears sprint versions don't even seem to have the ability to access or turn on the hotspot, how can we get a hotspot on our S8+s using sprint?

I did this on my Sprint Galaxy S8+ and it works. Only downside is that you must turn off data everytime before you turn on hotspot and then turn data back on again but it works just fine after that. https://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-s7-edge/how-to/hotspot-bypass-nougat-ok-t3563446

You access it through ADB (I forgot what it stands for lol) but it's basically you connecting your phone to your pc via USB cable and giving your phone commands via your pc.. And I can confirm this method to get hotspot to work actually works.. I used this method to use the hotspot feature on my S8 Plus ?
Yes you are just pushing a modified file via ADB but I guess it isn't a system file. I thought before it was not possible to access this file w/o root access.
Dave
Every Sprint Galaxy that I've had for YEARS now has had built-in HotSpot. I've always wondered why its been a big deal in the xda forums.
SM-G950U, running Android 7.0 (software version QD9).
Having a hotspot and having the hotspot actually work are two different things. Sprint locks down the hotspot and charge you for it so when we root we bypass that. And for some reason until I did a wipe and factory reset I did not have the hotspot/tethering option in settings.
Took 5 min and works fine. I did have to try the second method because I had no internet the first method.
Going on a trip soon and sprint wants $60 for 6 gig of data on my old unlimited plan is a rip.
Sent from my SM-G950U using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Now that I know you don't have to root any longer to get to those system files I'm happy. Does this setting remain after a phone reboot?
Dave
It worked as well that I did follow step by step.. My phone use Sprint I'm use hotspot. If not work internet I go to setting, system update, update Profile during on hotspot. And it works. That how I did ?
Yea the turn the data on and off method works great for me. I just put the hotspot and data right next to each other in the pull down menu. That way it's really quick. I'm glad I don't have to root so I can use Pay.

Next Radio does FM, but yes, it will stream if there is data. I tested Next Radio myself about a month ago briefly. I disabled data and wifi and picked a station -- a station came in. However, others tried to replicate it and even tried a different app and found it did not work. So I was left scratching my head.
On my HTC 10 which does have a FM tuner, nextradio will only work with headphones plugged in because it uses it for the antenna.
I tried NextRadio again (as I had last month with success) and found something interesting. Short answer is no... FM radio does not seem to be enabled.
Disable data AND WiFi prior to launching NextRadio -- radio comes in fine. However, I have a network traffic monitor screen overlay and I saw data still coming through despite no cellular data or wifi being enabled.
Turn on Airplane mode prior to launching NextRadio -- the app prompts me that it can't work while in airplane mode due to the radios being disabled.
Turn off Airplane mode, leaving WiFi and cellular data turned off, then launch NextRadio -- prompted with a message to enable data, indicating FM radio is not supported.
What I take from this is that WiFi and/or cellular data doesn't actually get turned off when you turn them off. Perhaps a bug?
Tried using this app on my PH-1 with the latest updates and no joy in finding anything with the Wifi and cell data off.
Isn't there an FM radio built into most (if not all) Qualcomm SoC's? I remember reading something a couple months back during of the of the hurricanes about enabling it/having a preinstalled app for it.

Yea, it's on nearly every device with a SOC. It just needs to be activated by the OEM.

Yes, it's pretty much there by default. But I had read in some teardowns that some OEMs don't physically connect the FM antenna, so even a software update wouldn't fix it. Unclear if that's the case on the Essential phone or even true anymore. I'm sure things are integrated more than they used to be.

So we are talking about unlimited data usage?
What benefits can this bring? Usually I change the phone every 3 years, because industry growth rates do not allow changing every year. However, oneplus 7 is so good that it changed its 5 version ahead of schedule
