What's the little dot between camera and flash? - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

I noticed that since the leaks. First I thought that will be the laser focus module for LDAF, but since I got Pixel 3 on my hand, I found that was too small to be a laser focus module than any other phone has.
Besides, I tried use another camera and pointed at the back of Pixel 3 when its camera open, there's no flash coming out of that dot like my Pixel 1 did.
So what is that dot exactly? It seems like a illumination sensor but I've got no idea why we need a illumination sensor on that position. Also I can't find any explanation on Google store website.

It's a Spectral + Flicker Sensor.
Pixel 3 phones don't have the laser autofocus anymore.

On a similar note, did anyone else notice that the black model of the Pixel 2 has it's sensors hidden behind tinted glass, but the Pixel 3's are on full display behind clear glass? I wonder why they changed this. I liked the clean look of the tinted glass over the sensors.

Which sensors do you mean?
Front-facing sensors like proximity and light sensor? Or the rear sensor?
If it's for the rear, that's because Pixel 2 had IR autofocus sensors, which are themselves deep black and therefore easier to hide. The flicker sensor of Pixel 3 is not black so it will always stand out.

Autofocus and laser autofoucs

This is probably a silly question but went out this morning to take some shots and if I am honest I wasn't that impressed with the auto focus. My previous phone was an s7 edge so i have probably been spoiled bu the superfast focus speeds but considering this has phase/contract and laser autofocus i thought it would have been faster.
At times I did feel it struggles to find focus, this makes me question the laser auto focus. On my previous LG G4 and nexus 6p you could actually see the laser auto focus working, a small red light (one assumes the laser) emits from the black square near the camera module on both those phones but i don't see anything from the xz premium in dark or light conditions. Are you supposed to see the laser auto focus on the these units? Can anybody try there and see if they can see it.

Try shooting the back of the phone with a camera. Most of the cameras can detect infrared light while humans can't. You will see it as a purple dot.
It's better to use another phone for this because some stand-alone cameras use infrared filter.

Yeah you're right its was there firing away.
Still a fantastic camera even if i am being picky about the auto focus.

Pixel 3 Features on Pixel 2 and Older devices

Hi Everyone,
I figured i'd directly ask and see what Pixel 3 features will be made available to Pixel 2 and Pixel devices by contacting Customer Support. The following has been listed and emailed to me directly:
Hello, this email is in reference to our conversation we had regarding the Pixel 3 features will will also be available for Pixel 2 and Pixel 1 devices.
Face Retouching, Google Lens, Mode switcher / carousel, Night mode, Playground (AR stickers), Slow motion video, VR Panorama will be available for all the devices.
Photobooth, Subject tracking auto focus, Super res zoom, Top Shot, Wide angle front camera will not be available for Pixel 2 and Pixel 1 both.
Motion Photos will not be available for Pixel 1 only but this feature will be available for Pixel 2.
Call Screen option and Digital Wellbeing will also be available for all the devices.
As of now, the information has updated and these features will be rolled out for Pixel 2 and Pixel 1 as soon as possible.
I'll update you further with all the information and feature which will be available in future.
I hope this helps!!!
I can't understand why top shot won't be available for the pixel 2. I mean wide angle was obviously not coming. Although I am made up that night sight is coming
as of right now, u can sideload latest gcam with new UI manually, just get the apk at apkmirror site. i have tested it for today, quite stable no issues. With new gcam, u can adjust the bokeh effect and color pop, although its not always perfect same like pixel 2 portrait mode that we gotten used to.

I've been using it too and I'm not a fan of the UI but I can get used to it, performance is good, looking forward to night sight when it is out. Again shame no top shot.

How did you adjust the bokeh effect? I managed to get color pop which is great!

Unfortunately, one feature is being removed from the Pixel 3 that each previous generation had... No more notification LED!

How did you get it to install? I downloaded but the installation fails.
Super res zoom will be available on pixel 2 ?

Seriously? I would never buy a phone without a notification LED. The Pixel 2's is already horrible. You can barely see it. I don't get why that would be a huge deal to include.
I don't feel that a notification LED is required anymore... The Always on Display shows notifications much better and, in my case as least, has a negligible impact on battery.

I will be very interested when we get the call screen feature ported for all devices (not just pixels!).

Conversely I find the notification LED, with different colours for different apps, quite useful: easier to see from a distance, and once the message text disappears from the AOD the LED colour is easier to distinguish than a little icon on a dim display. To be honest, I'd rather have LED and no AOD than vice-versa.
Different people have different preferences.
Do you believe playing on Google Stadia will work on Pixel 2? Gaming only works for Pixel 3/3a, other devices can only make purchases and such.

Camera not focusing properly

Hi all,
several days ago I noticed that the camera of my Mate 9 (MHA-L09C432) is not focusing.
Then I saw at this this thread that the camera module could be shifted.
Because the focus is working in properly in b/w mode I gave it a try.
Today I disassembled my phone (which was not easy) and saw that the bottom part of the dual camera module was slipped out of the fixture for 1-2mm.
After correcting this problem, cleaning the lenses and reassembling the phone I am now able to focus on objects in a range of about 1m again. But if the camera is not parallel to the object it is very difficult to focus...
But the main problem is, that i am not able to focus on an object which is more than 1m away... The object is always blurry and when i choose manual focus I am already on the maximum of the focus range...
In b/w mode everything works perfectly fine!
I cant see any impurities on the color-lens...
Does anybody have similar issues? What could be done to solve this problem? Could a new camera module solve this problem?
Thank you for any help in advance!
I fixed this problem by replacing the entire camera module.
I tried several things but only this solved the problem...
I do have the same problem exactly
So you probably have to replace your camera module...
The Mate 9 is not so easy to open up...

I replaced camera module, and it worked for a few days then the same issue returned. It will focus close up (-+ 1m distance) but far distance 3m to infinity will be out of focus. I can get the camera to refocus correctly (sometimes!) by sharply slapping the phone display face down onto the palm of my hand. It only works face down.
This happens with origin camera lens and replacement lens I installed.
I guess my only solution to have a working color camera on a phone is to buy a new phone that isn't made by Huawei, as a search of Internet suggests it isn't just Mate9 model that has this problem??

Sounds like your camera is slipping inside the bracket... I revented this problem by pressing the camera module in place and carefully fixing it with hot glue... Don't block the autofocus or the lens with hot glue. Only a very thin layer from the edge of the camera case to the bracket is required.

I tried fixing the camera in the 'bracket' as you say - by glueing it down. Its just a space on the board it fits into, so I'm not sure about any bracket. I have now tried it with two camera modules (the original and a replacement I bought). Both cameras give the same unfocused result on anything more than 1-2 m away. Strangely on scenic shots some parts of the shot are in focus whilst most of the scene is out of focus. The front camera and monochrome camera are OK. The aperture option on the color camera doesn't work at all, if I try and edit depth of field after taking photo it has no effect. There's also a setting in the camera app to restore defaults, which has no effect also.

Does the OP7 have under screen sensors?

Was at the beach... in direct sunlight, max brightness, white screen, I not only see the fingerprint sensor circle where it should be, but I also see 2 smaller circles... maybe an inch from the top of the screen and on the right side.
Does anyone else ha w these? Make sure it's bright enough so you can see the fingerprint scanner (if you can't see that, then you won't see the smaller ones).
I know the Pro has an underscreen sensor, but I thought the 7 was like the 6T.. next to the camera? Or did the 6T have it under the screen, too?
Why are there 2 circles?
Verified with another camera that there's definitely an IR sensor there (at least the left of the 2 circles).
Not sure of it's for light or proximity, or what the other one is. Weird they did this for the 7 but not 6T?
Yes, we have prox sensor and light sensor under screen. Why we have it in op7 but not in op6t? Maybe before the cost was so high or efficiency so low

Question Something moving inside my pixel 7 pro

Hi everybody,
i noticed something inside is not in place when i shake my pixel 7 pro.
Do you notice the same thing when you shake your pixel 7 pro ?
I suppose it's camera related. Maybe the lens.
I don't know if it's an issue to everybody. My photo module is well fixed and nothing move, i don't know if it's the lens. It seems to be inside. All i can say is that my pixel 7 pro is new ( less than 5 days) and he never fell down
Likely the OIS sensor from the telephoto zoom lens.

Nah, don't worry about it.
This is why your Pixel 6/6 Pro makes noise when you shake it
Is your Pixel 6 or 6 Pro making a weird clicking sound when you shake it? You're not alone. Here's what it is.
9to5google.com
It's the telephoto. Had the same issue with the S21 Ultra, and likely the S22 Ultra but never had one so can't confirm. If rooted there was a fix for the S21 Ultra if I recall, not sure the same would apply to the 7 Pro.
"issue" has been around in some phones since the S20 Ultra
it's the telephoto lense
Thank you everybody for you answers ! So no need to worry about that

this is how mine rattles, it sounds worse in the video though. I think it's normal.
Every phone with a telephoto I've used has the same rattle. Not a problem.
Just noticed I have the same issue and was admittedly pissed until I read this thread. What's weird is it wasn't doing this out of the box it somehow eased into doing this... I went through all the Sounds files for ringtones last night ... Wonder if the vibrations loosen something up. Glad you posted though
I directly checked mine and it also has this "issue". But I also checked my Huawei P30 Pro which also has tele, but there is nothing.

I'm pretty confident it was, you simply didn't notice it.
You can try and trigger the OIS on the telephoto and hear if the sound is as alarming as before, and just to make sure, go to 30x zoom and not 5x, Google doesn't always trigger the telephoto lens.
It's either the Telephoto lens or the Image stabilization. It's not an "issue". Completely normal.
Even if I shake my 1200$ DSLR lens I'll hear similar rattling inside (mechanical parts moving, image stabilization is mechanical)
Google (well whoever makes the periscope lens) have done a good job with the Pixel 7 Pro i reckon, the noise is quite subdued, the Pixel 6 Pro however sounded like a rattle and Bez could have used it at a Happy Mondays gig.

Now Jerryrigeverything has ripped a P7P to bits you can see why the periscope lens rattles.

I have fallen down my Pixel, and I noticed the noise, and I found this post.
Maybe some noise is not by the OIS? I have made some tests.
1. Use 5x camera. Shake from left to right.
2. Use 5x camera. Shake from front to back.
3. Use 1x camera. Shake from left to right.
4. Use 1x camera. Shake from front to back.
As in the video.
Your browser is not able to display this video.
I noticed that only "1" has no noise, maybe the reason is the OIS is being used?
All the other "2 3 4" has noise, the "4" 's noise in the video is not so clear, but actually it's the same with "2".
The noise between "Shake from left to right" and "Shake from front to back" is different. Maybe the noise of "Shake from front to back" is caused by my fallen down's breaks, not by the OIS? I am so disturbing...
