So the A/B structure of the Pixel (I came from Nexus 5X) took some getting used to, not having a recovery partition was a new wrinkle, and the jimmy jammy required to unlock the bootloader (I bought a Verizon Pixel apparently) was a neat trick. So I got the Pixel bootloader unlocked, booted with TWRP, installed Lineage, rebooted to bootloader, fastboot booted to TWRP, installed TWRP and OpenGapps.. Excellent! Setup the phone, booted to TWRP and installed Magisk. eveything works! great phone!
Then, a week later there is an update to Lineage. So I copy the ZIP file to my phone, flash it and OpenGapps and reboot. Boom. all screwed up. no problem, I'll restore from the backup I made in TWRP. nope. bootloop. then I read that you restore BOOT,SYSTEM IMAGE,VENDOR IMAGE, and DATA. NOT all the partitions as I had naively thought. Turns out I boned the backup and didn't backup the DATA partition so the Restore works but all my setup stuff is gone. My fault.
I went through the entire process again. Phone is working fine. All is well. Heres the question: What is the appropriate method to upgrade Lineage when a new one is released? So that I end up with new lineage, updated OpenGapps, TWRP working, and Magisk keeping me rooted? I can just keep trying to figure it out but I dont want to keep starting at zero with my phone.
Thanks in advance. I searched diligently on the forums but it looks like not that many Pixel users use Lineage.
Cheers
d.
130 views and no one knows how you upgrade LineageOS? is anyone using Lineage on their Pixel? Really?
I just discovered Lineage OS for my VZW Pixel. What build did you use? If I can figure out how to install, I'll try playing with updating, too.
Where did you end up downloading LineageOS from? I'd be curious to try it as well.

I probably should have looked there. I didn't even realize they supported the pixel. It's been a while since I've messed with things.
I've been using LineageOS and it's great. Super stable compared to most of the other ROMs I've tested. These are the steps I take when upgrading to a newer build.
- reboot to recovery (TWRP)
- install lineage-15.1-xxx-nightly-sailfish-signed.zip (no wipe or anything beforehand)
- install twrp-pixel-installer-sailfish-xxx.zip
- return to TWRP main menu and select reboot, then Recovery (whenever it prompts me to install TWRP app I just hit "Do Not Install")
- once back in TWRP, install MindTheGapps-8.1.0-arm64-xxx.zip
- reboot to system (again, I always decline the TWRP app installation)
- once you've booted to system, reboot to recovery one last time.
- install Magisk-v17.x.zip
- reboot to system and you should be good to go.
I always have a recent backup from TitaniumBackup stored on my computer so if anything goes wrong I can do a clean install and reload all my apps.
awesome. I'll try that. I'm using 15.1 10/23/2018 version and I have backed up so I'll do it. one question, do you reboot between installing lineage zip and twrp installer?

No. Install TWRP immediately after installing the Lineage zip, before rebooting. Otherwise when you reboot to recovery it'll be the Lineage recovery and then you'll need a computer to send any other files you want to flash.
Also, they just started releasing builds every 24 hours. You might want to check the changelog every few days to see if there is anything new that's worthwhile. Some days there may actually not be any changes at all.
@CapriciousCrawdad
well I tried it today, just as you have it written in your post (other than what I assume was a typo where you say "return to lineage" in step 4 where I think you meant TWRP) and what it looks like is my working installation is on partition A and after installing as you specified it tried to boot on B and couldnt get past the Google screen. so I finally got it to reboot into TWRP and switched back to A and got my phone going again with my old October revision. the only difference is that I use OpenGApps and not MindTheApps. so tomorrow I'll try it with those.

Whoops. Indeed, that was a typo in step 4. I edited the post.
Not sure about your problem though... I do remember specifically reading that opengapps can cause some issues but I can't find the source of that info and I don't think that it had anything to do with updating the system. I'm on mobile now but I might have time to check it out tomorrow.
If you haven't already, I suggest you check out the official LineageOS thread for the Pixel and Pixel XL. There might be some helpful info there.

yes thats where i ended up. tried to update and got bootlooped, my backup didnt work for some reason (do i backup EFS partition also?) so i started again with the instructions in that post. i used the Gapps package from @razorloves and it all worked. setup my phone again and now it upgrades fine using the Lineage updater although i have to reinstall TWRP and reroot (using SuperSU from Lineage) when that happens. razorloves hasnt updated his google FI compatible Gapps package yet so i will see how/if i can update those when the times come. on a side note, im getting really good at setting up my pixel. got to look at the upside.
thanks for your suggestions.

Hey folks; I'm hoping I can get some advice or pointers, or maybe just a slap upside the head with something I've missed.
I have one of the original Shield tablets, and played around with it quite a lot, installing various custom ROMs from the marvelous directions I've found here. When the battery thing happened, I submitted the required info and happily received my new tablet. The original was rooted and customised still, kill-switch averted, and I had two working tablets. I gave the new stock one to my wife.
But then, about three months ago, I was playing with mine again installing a newer ROM than the one I was using (I *think* I was going from an older Bliss rom to one of the Cyanogen), and ... Something Happened (tm). The tablet rebooted in the middle of everything, and now won't boot to an image.
I'm on Windows 10 now, and had some fun getting the drivers working, but they seem to. I can communicate with the tablet through Fastboot, but ADB doesn't see it. I've flashed several versions of TWRP to the tablet, and can boot into that recovery - both through Fastboot and the tablet's power+vol-dn buttons. I've used TWRP to flash several different ROMs, and it *appears* to work (there are no errors), but when I reboot the tablet .... nada. Nothing but the Nvidia boot screen for days.
So now... what have I missed? I'm a little reluctant to flash a stock ROM, but I'm at a loss. I used to have more time to fiddle and figure, and I'm afraid that my impatience is going to kill the thing.
Format system and data see if that works
You need to have the latest bootloader to run the latest roms.

so you wan t your "burning" tablet set again stock?
Did you read about "recovery images" for shield tablet?
If fastboot is working you can flash the recovery image and all will update to the latest(blob, system, boot, etc)
flash latest twrp for shieldtablet.
after that use the nomoreota.zip to prevent the software brick from nvidida

No, I don't want it stock at all, I was just worried that was my only option to get this thing to respond again. I was running BlissPop v.somethingorother, but wanted to update. That's when things went awry.
Right, well it looks like I've got this thing going. I could flash TWRP 3.1.0-0, but not any 3.1.1. Cyanogenmod 12 worked. Reading up a little more (it got slow at work for a couple of days...) I flashed the firmware to 5.0, and could now install TWRP 3.1.1-1! Then I could install (in this case) Lineage 14.1, which *almost* worked. It booted, but there's no wifi.
Then I found a suggestion - I think it was on these forums somewhere - and restarted. Wiped all data again, flashed Cyanogenmod 12, no gapps. Restarted, checked everything including wifi, and is good. Rebooted back into recovery, performed a factory reset, then installed Lineage 14.1 and gapps. When it rebooted, everything is working!
So. Firmware. Huh.
Thanks all.

do not know if you need the bootloader(blob) from nougat to boot up, that lafester told you. but that sounds plausible. skooter says something from re-formating. so if you tried that all and nothing changes? cache and data partition you wiped also, so it has to be work for my understanding.
went always stock, so can t help you..
but you can use recovery images > twrp > bliss/linage. no need to boot up stock?

Hi,
I have a VZW Quark that's been unlocked with Sunshine and rooted and running fine on custom ROM's for a year. Today I did a factory reset and complete wipe and reinstalled RR Rom and GApps etc. However, on reboot, it only goes back to recovery (TWRP 3.1.1-0). I faced this the last time as well and managed to find the fix by googling it but can't seem to get to it now. It was a quick fix and then it booted to system fine and I cannot remember it. Can anyone help! Thanks.

Someone else had this issue and they solved it by flashing the latest @bhb27 modded TWRP. You say you have TWRP 3.1.1, but is it from the TWRP website or from @bhb27? Flash this one below to make sure.
twrp-3.1.1-mod_2-quark.img
https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=39562
Once they flashed it, they were able to boot to system, then they booted back to TWRP (on purpose) -- and then upon subsequent reboots everything was fine.

I'm not bothered with twrp recovery so did not flash the zip, but like I said I booted into twrp.img, flashed supersu and suhide and that's it. All working for me including SafetyNet. I used USB OTG for this process.
I did the same as the poster above.
just curious;
but how is Android 8.1? ?
I've found 8.0 to not be as good on battery life as 7.x.x, although I think I have mostly worked that out on my custom kernel...
any other notable goodies?

There could be few things that is causing to stuck, you can try below points in order make it work
1) check if downloaded factory image is not corrupt - see if you can extract all files from that zip, and/or download it again.
2) Disable any antivirus/firewall in your PC which monitors the behavior of files and try again.
3) Run cmd as Administrator and then run flash-all.bat
If none of above works then try and flash each file manually, follow my guide from below link this has worked 99% times

Just to test your theory (and came out wrong), I sideload'ed 8.1 OTA over my previous 8.1. This time it was successful without an error, attached images - one of it not clear as taken it from laptop camera just right now.
It seems like a file system issue when sideload'ing over 8.0.0 - a android developer shall confirm.
In short, both OTA and factory images from google are totally fine, concern is something else.

It wouldn't be a fair test.
The update fails when sideloading 8.1 over a 8.0 system.
Edit: let me try the few things you suggested to test your suggestions . However I am not too optimistic.
@mannunikhil as I was extracting the ota, I realised I shouldn't bother with it. Google itself has taken down the ota from their site...

Mine was the fair test just to check if OTA zips are corrupt or not. I provided suggestions for factory image not for OTA, no point in extracting the OTA anyway. And if you had gone through all the threads you would see I mentioned I had similar issue sideload'ing OTA over 8.0.0, so that means we are sailing in same boat. OTAs had compatibility issue with 8.0.0, glad google listened and taken them off.
I still have little lag in app drawer hoping that would be fixed too in republished OTA.
Just signed up for Android beta program and got the 8.1 update for my project fi carrier unlocked Google pixel XL. The update seems to be running smoothly and everything is working so far on my device... I didn't have any issues with installation it installed just fine... Can't wait for Nov security patch supposed to be a good network feature in there in Dev settings.
I am not sure if this may help anyone trying to look at why the issues are present when trying to install:
Android 8.1 beta OTA upgrade on OG Pixel
I, just like many of you, have been experiencing OTA "installation problem" when trying to upgrade to the 8.1 beta. After reviewing comments and what worked for who, I decided to give this a shot and it worked. I am not sure if this will work for other devices (nexus or XLs) and keep in mind that you WILL lose all your data stored on the device, so back up prior to this method.
1. Be sure you are enrolled in the beta program.
2. Wait for the OTA to notify you that it's available.
3. Select "Download and Install".
4. After it has done its duty, DO NOT select "Restart and Install"
5. Go to "Factory Reset" and pull the trigger.
6. Your phone will factory reset, stating it's wiping everything, then it will install the update successfully.
NOTE: this is what worked for me. I'm unsure if it will solve all the "Installation problem" reports which have been made.
It's weird cause when I tried to factory reset, then download and install, it didn't work. Yet, downloading but NOT installing, then factory resetting worked.
After doing this I posted it here: https://plus.google.com/+ChristopherLeeMurray/posts/KDCZXbfAxLJ
You don’t need to sign up to the beta program. Just go to the Google website and download the latest 8.1 factory image. That's what I did and had no problem with flashing it. You can also delete the - w and keep your data. It's getting past the TWRP password to decrypt that I cant do. So can't flash root or recovery. Anyone managed this?
I'd prefer to be in the beta program since I'm a Android apps beta tester. I beta test everything and when it was installing it said on the screen that it's a beta version of the original software version of 8.1 which is what I believe is on Googles page and mine may have errors and defects.. the beta program gets different software than what Google usually posts. Different features and such which isn't in the official version which makes it a beta version.

If you wipe system, then flash oos ROM, TWRP will think there is no os. You can just ignore and boot.
Wiping system then flashing any time will make twrp display "no os installed" it does this because it hasn't created files for twrp to check if you have a ton installed. Flashing twrp then rebooting to twrp fixes it.
Reboot to stock recovery?

Hi, need a little bit of support, since I'm new to this as well. I was in a working OOS open beta 25/28, but then I think I flashed the wrong zip (OOS 9.0.9?), and I was not able to boot to system. It kept going to "bootloader unlocked" screen and custom recovery. Currently in TWRP blu_spark 3.3.1-x v. 9.109, and it's showing me no OS installed when I attempt to reboot. I haven't rebooted to system yet.
All the folders in my /sdcard is gibberish... if I try to push a file to it, it says "Required key not available." I did remove all security/passwords from my phone before doing any updates/backups.
I completed a wipe cache/dalvik/system via TWRP, and flashed the OOS OTA stable Android 10 zip downloaded directly from OnePlus Support. Considering this situation, do you still think it's safe for me to reboot to system? Then how do I get to stock recovery from there--is that by holding down the buttons?

No, your internal storage Is like trash cause the last rom you flashed has older security patch than oos10. Your device Is now encrypted and wont boot to system. I Guess you have to erase all via MSN tool or fastboot signed rom. Even if you wiped what mentioned above, your problem still be the data.
Fastboot method?

For the MSN tool, can I use this one? Tried looking around, but it's unclear. "[TOOL] MsmDownloadTool V4.0 International (Oxygen OS 5.1.5)" https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...wnloadtool-v4-0-international-t3798892/page10
I would be more comfortable with using fastboot, but am I at any risk of having lost fastboot, or can I just turn off my device from TWRP right now and hold down the buttons to get there? Afraid to move out of TWRP right now, in case I can't get back. I do have twrp-3.3.1-18-enchilada-Q-mauronofrio.img that I can run from fastboot if needed.
By "signed rom," do you mean I can simply flash one of the zips here from fastboot? "[OnePlus 6][ROM][OTA][Oxygen OS] Mirrors for official Oxygen OS ROMs and OTA updates" https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/oneplus-6-mirrors-official-oxygen-os-t3792244
Thanks again.

I hardbricked my device about 10 times and i was able to recovery It even from a blank screen. Btw format data Will erase all your data but also the internal storage. About fastboot dont be afraid, go under twrp reboot section and reboot to bootloader. Then go under xda op6 guide section and search for mirrors for fastboot rom guide by Mauronofrio. He pushed my ass out the **** a lot of time.
P.s. Sorry but I dunno how to paste a link via xda app. Yes, ik! It's a vert newbie thing.

That's awesome, I'm starting to grasp how much of a genius Mauronofrio is, after so many people referencing his work.
In his guide, he says, "These ROMs can't be used to update or downgrade your phone but just to restore your phone, so don't use them to come back to oreo or to update from oreo to pie." This may be a dumb question, but how do I know which zip/OOS version to flash, when I don't have a functioning OS on my phone?

I talked with Mauronofrio in pm and he said me that you could solve your issue simply flash the ROM you want and format data after flash that one. Remember that your internal will be wiped but it would happen in any scenario we talked.
Magisk, boot img?

That worked! And starstruck that you were able to check that with him. I flashed Mauronofrio's fastboot ROM for 10.3.2 and it rebooted (WOW). I clicked through the Google setup pages and checked that my data and wifi worked.
I then went back into fastboot, booted M's twrp img, fomatted data, and then installed twrp-3.3.1-x_blu_spark_v9.109_op6.zip, rebooted into recovery.
Then I think I made a mistake, because I installed Magisk-v20.4.zip. It succeeded, but now I can't boot into system anymore. Is it too late to flash the 10.3.2 boot.img?

No. Just flash stock boot image if magisk broke something.

I ended up following the guide to Magisk Root without TWRP for OnePlus 6 Oxygen OS https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/patched-boot-image-magisk-16-7-beta-t3818853 since it was referenced by Mauronofrio's post for having issues getting his TWRP to work with latest Magisk.
Someone posted a patched boot.img for 10.3.2, so now I'm rooted without TWRP. Priorities. Now all I need is for special characters and emojis to work Will keep an eye on other threads.
I'm learning a lot, thanks so much for all your help. You pointed me in the right direction when I was not sure what the hell to do!

I followed that thread for the first A10 release cause there wasn't a worked twrp yet. You are welcome man, when I feel myself usefull I always try to help.
I'm at my wit's end here. I know I'm probably missing some critical step, but I haven't been able to install any OTAs since installing TWRP and Magisk. Fortunately, I was able to update to the latest TWRP before trying (the one that has working decryption) and backup Boot, the two Systems, and Data. I cannot stress enough how important this is!.
The OTA installer detects the device is rooted (or unlocked, if magisk isn't installed) and downloads the OTA. It then asks to install (which is does while booted to system, presumably to the side (A or B) that isn't updated), and asks to reboot. After reboot, the system fails to boot, then goes to the original OnePlus recovery (with the Chinese characters).
I seem to remember reading somewhere that I needed to shut the phone down instead of rebooting, but that doesn't seem to help. I want to know the correct procedure for updating, but I also want to better understand what is actually going on. I'm guessing the boot image on the other side gets overwritten by the OTA, which then flips you to that side, but I don't understand why it doesn't boot. Non-patched boot.img, I suppose?
These steps worked for me:
1 install ota
2 flash TWRP_A_B_Retention_Script-Magisk.zip via magisk
3 install magisk on inactive slot
4 reboot

Awesome. I had not even heard of the retention script, but it sounds like exactly what I'm missing.
As for step 3, how do you install Magisk on the inactive slot?

Open magisk, click the first install option and download that zip. Then a box with four options should appear. Click the last option to install on another slot.

No problem. Let me know if you have any issues.
Well, it's different (booting to TWRP instead of stock recovery), but it still didn't work. It booted through the "warning...unlocked bootloader" screen twice, then went to TWRP, though without encryption. I was able to switch the boot slot and get into system again (just as it was before the flash), but I don't know what I did wrong.
The only thing different I did was use the tools under EX Kernel Manager to flash the TWRP retention script, as I couldn't find where Magisk could do that.
**EDIT**
Now when I try to do the OTA, I get a "System update installation failed".
I cleared the cache and tried it again, this time doing the retention zip from inside Magisk > Modules > Add (+ sign) option, which is what I'm assuming you did.
It did the exact same thing. After step four, I rebooted, and it went straight into recovery (without the option to decrypt).
I think you have to root your phone again If you have the chinese twrp you can do it via twrp. Otherwise put tj magisk installer on a USB stick

I can install/uninstall Magisk all day long, now that I've put TWRP 3.3.1-30 on. Even after a failed update, where it fails to ask to decrypt, I can still sideload via USB and install it (even though I can't see the internal storage).

Can you lflash the ota image again? And after that twrp and after that magisk again. After that reboot to system again. This worked on my pixel. Not shure if this works on the 7 pro...
Maybe do some research first. There is also a unbrick thread

I've been doing a lot of research. There are some pretty in-depth threads on reddit how the A/B treble system works. Nothing I didn't already know. It's certainly different than pre-treble, but not rocket science... something is wrong with the phone. I would just like to know what I did wrong in the first place so I don't do it again.
Fortunately, I still have a bootable system with root on my B partition, so I was able to run TB and backup everything, along with all my pictures and such. I'll be restoring it to stock and just going from there. Looks like I don't have any other choice.

Okay I updated just like we do with our pixels when we flash a custom ROM. TW RP flash your ota.zip,TWRP zip, reboot to recovery that will switch slots , because your update just flashed to the other slot, then flash magisk then reboot. That's how I did this last update. Oh and it's got to be the full ota from what I read anyways.
