Stock video camera app stuttering/frame dropping on Pixel 3XL - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

Hey, All,
I've noticed that some of my recorded videos will have a few seconds of stuttering/frame dropping at certain points. I'm in airplane 5 mode when shooting, and I have plenty of storage available. It's absolutely unacceptable not being able to predict when this may happen and what may cause it.
Here's a clip of it acting up: https://youtu.be/b15FaXWr8MM
Has anyone else had this? I seem to remember this being an issue on my Pixel 2XL as well...
If a third party party app would prevent this, I wouldn't mind trying.
Thanks,
Matt!

If you follow my thread I post a few days ago I had same problem. And Google had me go back to the original version of the camera app that came with the phone
Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk

Have the same problem. We bought 2 x Pixel 3 XLs and they both have this problem.
Also had this problem on my previous phone, the Pixel XL
Any solutions?

Pixel 3 warms up quickly, and when it does it will throttle CPUs heavily causing all sorts of video drops if Android starts doing something in the background as the phone can't keep up. Maybe it's something Google can improve in software but I doubt it. Just feels phone is thermally compromised somehow.

Galaxy S6 Camera Randomly Makes Loud Buzzing Sounds?

Hi all,
I wasn't able to find any threads related to this in the S6 forums but I wanted to see if anyone else has this. When I open my camera app, sometimes the camera takes 1-2 seconds to initially focus and during that time it makes a loud buzzing sound. It sounds like a focus motor or something in the camera and the camera output on screen flutters while it focuses. Once it focuses, everything is normal and it doesn't make any more noise to refocus. This also doesn't happen every time I open the camera app, seems mostly random. Has anyone else experienced this? I am already on my 2nd S6 since the first was defective for different reasons and I'm starting to get very disappointed with Samsung quality control.
I have the dame problem.
I don't know if this is normal.
I don't think so

going to bumps this too because after having the phone for a month this problem has just started to show its face.
I've first noticed a small buzzing just after a boot for 3/4 times and than I had a long one opening the camera. After that it's gone...
I have it also! Started a couple of days ago. I have dropped my phone a couple of times. What about you?
Had this happen for the first time today also. Had hdr off, switched back on and it went away. Coincidence? Phone never dropped.

Try to clean up your camera lens.
Did your device take some damage in the past?
Did you take it underwater? (The S6 isn't waterproof anymore...)

But it's not that loud.
Otherways, you can't record videos properly, because the microphone records those sounds.

Same problem here since last week.[emoji26]
I tried hard reset and another camera app (Google photo), nothing work.
I think it's a hardware problem, it occurs after shaking the phone and launching the camera.
I feel that the OIS makes more noise when app is off.

This started happening with my S6 today. I think it's the OIS that poops out. I can make this happen with a light tap with my finger on the backside of the phone with the camera open and using the rear camera. And this happens with all camera apps: Samsung's bundled camera, Snap Camera and Camera FV-5.
Update: ..and just as sudden this started happening, it went away again. I hope it's a bug - with a fix in 5.1.1.
Update 2: No, it didn't go away. It comes and goes. I may need to take the phone to the service centre.
Mine has gotten worse. Almost every time I open the camera now, I have the buzzing.
Just checking in to say that mine started doing this, too, about four weeks after getting it. It does it randomly when I open Snapchat, too.
I am having this problem too on the Sprint version sometimes it is pretty loud. I'm planning on taking to service center I think.
I also get the waves before it focuses. I read on another forum that someone said they went to a Samsung service center and Samsung replaced their OIS sensor so I'm guessing this may not be something that is simply part of the design.
*Update #1*
I just got off the phone with Samsung customer service. The representative actually heard the buzzing from my phone over the phone while I was talking to her. Since the phone is still under factory warranty they are emailing me a shipping label to send the phone back for repair.
I also have Asurion insurance through Sprint but do not want a refurb for a phone that is less than a month old with no damage caused by me.
Unfortunately the turn around time from Samsung is about a 5 business days and that was after they told me 9-11 days in which I said I couldn't be without a phone that long.
So, I plan on going to Sprint to see if they will swap out my phone for a brand new one. I think if it is a manufacturer defect they will replace the phone without going through insurance for a refurb but I am not positive. It they won't swap it out for a new one I will go through Samsung.

I tried and initially it doesn't seem to happen when the mega pixels are lowered but I haven't tested extensively.
I went to Sprint today and the technician concluded that he was ordering me another phone so definitely seems hardware related.

Camera issue

Hey guys,*
I asked this in the main S6 Edge forum but no one has responded. Sometimes when I launch my camera, it makes a loud buzzing noise and has trouble focusing. It seems like something is getting in the way of the lens not allowing it to move freely. If I shake really quickly it usually stops and works like it should. I don't know if it's a lens issue or an issue with the OIS. Has anyone else had this issue and if so have you found a solution? This is my second S6 Edge. The first one succumbed to the auto rotate bug. Thanks for your time.
Might be a bad phone how long you had it. If its between the 15 days warranty take it back. Or contact samsung.
Sent from my SM-G925P using Tapatalk
I've had it since launch. I'll try to see if it's too late to add the warranty first, then go from there. Bummer to have 2 phones that we're faulty in less than 2 months.
image quality has been upgraded
Mine also does this sometimes after it stops making the noise it seems fine and it only does it very randomly

It's becoming more frequent for me, I'm afraid what ever is happening will totally mess up the lens. So far no impact to image quality either, but we shall see.

Overheating while using camera!

When I take some pictures or have a video call, the phone warms up so fast. Is it a normal thing for pixel 3?
Yes, the theory is the all glass back is more insulating than the old metal backs of the P1 and P2 series, meaning that you will feel more heat on the device as it is slower to release it to the air than metal. This is normal and nothing for you to worry about. The phone will shut off automatically to protect itself if it overheats.
Same experience here. Phone also slows down to a crawl and apps start stuttering.. is this phone thermally compromised somehow? It reminds me of the 810 and Nexus 5X days.. at double the price

This sounds more like a combination of the heat and the memory management issues that users are facing. If I have music playing and open the camera, Spotify closes. If I take a photo and then try to go do something else while it's processing the photo(s) it stutters for a few seconds.
Android Auto crashes itself without doing anything, but that's been happening for a few months and did so on my Pixel 2 XL, too.

Android Auto seems to be a resource hog in general. My Pixel 2 would close AA if my screen turned off for more than 1 min.
My pixel 3 routinely displays the overheat message and slows down to a crawl after ten to fifteen minutes of a video call. The first time it even made a weird hissing sound. Have a replacement arriving for a different issue and hoping for better thermals.

It definitely runs cooler than the first one. The overheating was specifically in 3rd party apps such as LINE and Skype. The latest system update seems to have addressed this. The phone now runs much cooler during video calls in those apps. I'm still happy I got rid of the first one as it generally ran very hot compared to this replacement!

returning Pixel 3?

Anyone here returning their pixel 3?
after a couple weeks with the phone i actually might...
issues ive encountered.
app redraws are rediculous
if you have apps in the background suddenly i find myself waiting for applications to open again, and i mean longer than i would normally if i first launch the app (ive formatted /data, and even ran the flash-all script incase something was wrong, this is actually my second pixel 3 xl)
notifications not appearing or taking forever even with all battery saving features off.
4GB ram is really showing itself here.
previously having the oneplus 6-8GB ram - coming to the pixel 3 performance is horrible
im considering returning the pixel 3xl and getting a oneplus 6T

Thanks for your observations. I have both P3XL and OP6T. I have been alternating between the two for awhile now. I do not want to provide a full comparison here, but I have found myself using the P3XL much more than the OP6T. Main reason is that P3XL does everything perfectly. From touch to apps to camera.

The app redraw issue is a memory problem that is going to be fixed in an update, it has nothing to do with the available RAM. 4gb of RAM is fine, I'm only averaging 2.5gb on a daily basis and after rooting then installing a different kernel apps stay open in the background.
I am returning for the following reasons.
Pixel stand charges and phone over heats and will kill the device eventually.
Also camera bug on normal back camera. Zoom in all the way and photo starts to jump around like you are shaking the lens. Which is untrue as it was sitting against a stand and still did this. They have not issued a bug report because device is in for rma.
We will see what happens when new device comes in. Yes I have video of the camera bug. But I don't think xda would allow what's in the video. (not porn) lol

i see the camera thing on my phone too... i would think google would say this is a feature that lets the image move so additional pixels get taken... which they said is how they get the extra pixels for the zoom. the way i tested it was zooming all the way in on a door knob from 4-5 feet away. the image will sway in a circular motion.. i wouldn't call it a shake, its very gentle.
are we allowed to return after 14 days?

According to this article the image movement when zoomed is by design. It's emulating hand movement to allow the AI to get better resolution than the lens can optically support.

Anyone else absolutely hate this phone?

The 5g is horrendous
The Bluetooth sucks doesn't connect or work for half my devices any other cheap phone works flawlessly.
Phone freezes up on web pages constantly.
This phone is absolute trash.
I feel so ripped off for as much as I payed for this hunk of junk it should work.
The pictures are **** too... blurry an ****ed off.
When I call people they can't hear a word I say...
What else could go wrong?
Really wish I had waited for the pixel 5.
Even a 3 year old pixel smokes this trash.
Hopefully the next gen will be better.
I didn't have an issue with mine , but sold it today. I prefer the slick oneplus 8 pro. Less pork and more of an on point device.
Snapdragon or Exynos?

I feel you. Samsung support sucks; it's not your imagination.
I have a 10+ and have been eyeballing the 20U as an upgrade. There do appear to be display issues on some of these phones.
As for bt, try a network reset; it's relatively painless and may help.
Clear the system cache on the boot menu.
Double check all settings.
Turn off all power management except the power mode; set to optimize.
In Developer options>standby apps, if all buckets show as active, power management is disable. See if Android will manage them better with no assigned buckets.
Look for apps using up bandwidth/battery, cloud apps including Google Transport are prime offenders.
Disable Samsung, carrier and Google feedback.
Consider adding a package disabler like PD MDM the shutdown the bloatware.
See if that helps... play with it.

That doesn't help.
Depending on the carrier firmware the same model can behave much different.
Took me close to 6 months to dial in my AT&T 10+, it was a handful. Running hot, chewing up the battery.
Today, a year latter, it's a totally different animal; fast, stable with good battery life and no glitches.
These phones are complex with a lot of settings plus added carrier and 3rd party apks not to mention the Samsung apks. No configuration is the same.
If you don't play with them you'll never get it optimized and you'll just be along for the ride... wherever it goes.

You're welcome.
A hard reboot (simulating pulling the battery) may get it too if you haven't try it. Again clearing the system cache can cure many gremlins like magic, easy to do and worth trying.
Another possibility is the phone was infected with a virus or trojan, this is very unlikely though unless you inadvertently downloaded or loaded it.
Scan it with Malwarebytes and Trojan Scanner.
If in doubt reload.
Normally reloads aren't a solution unless it's an old load or if compromised by a virus.
If you reload check the system before you load anything except from Playstore; assume the SD card or computer backups could be compromised as well.
If you reload avoid doing any updates at first as one of these could be causing the erratic behavior.
If you did a firmware update this could be the cause; clearing the system cache may fix it but a reload is better. I disable autoupdates especially from the carrier for this reason among others.
More than likely you get it sorted out or at worst return for repairs.
Reload it though before you return it. Fixable software/settings issues* are common on these phones.
Lol, Androids wuv to be played with... good luck
*if you have a clean load it's always preferable to find the cause of the malfunction rather than reloading as the same issue may well happen again from the same apk or incorrect setting(s).

Honestly, I would have it exchanged if you are having that many problems with it, sounds like you may have a defective unit, it happens, could be something as simple as a faulty motherboard causing all those issues that a quick exchange would solve

Could be a bad mobo but it's easier to reload then to exchange it and then have the exact same issues.
Happened to me with the 10+, bt audio was horrible.
Return it and at first it was running normally then boom the exact same thing. I knew it was software but I didn't manually toggle it!
Samsung tech zero help, same-same with AT&T tech support.
The problem goes back at least as far as the N9 and that's where I found the solution.
It was a glitch in the advanced audio settings that sometimes toggles on by it's self probably due to a glitch in Wearables.
Samsung finally fixed it about a half year about with a Wearables update. It took them over 2 years.
If you knew about it, it was easy to simply untoggled it occasionally, if not it was an audio nightmare.
The only other way to reset it was a pointless reload.
I like the shotgun get it done approach but you can needlessly spend time without a solution if you don't first try to verify if it's hardware, bad flash or an issue that's pure software.
Out of the box this AT&T 10+ was a puking, bandwidth/battery eating, hot running mess besides the bt glitch.
Today with the same OS version and a lot of optimizing it's stable, fast, gorgeous looking platform with good battery life.
It wasn't even close to this out of the box...
If you don't take the time to play with these phones you'll miss the functionality they're capable of and put up will a lot of unpleasant experiences needlessly.
A misbehaving Android is an opportunity to learn new tricks. Just dive in... and see where it takes you.
I can confirm on pics being blurry. Also Samsung should calibrate their displays like Apple. Its shouldn't be left for users to find the right setting. Also the screen is not crisp in fhd mode. My Xr with 820p looked sharper.

Increase minimum DPI in developers options for way better sharpness / clarity

I try to take pics of my plants and it takes a ton of shots to get one nice clear one. I have a pixel 3 and the camera taking the same pics in the same lighting are beautiful and easy to capture perfectly the first time.
My screen just froze while typing this reply ?
Whole thing freezes up and you have to hit home button or the current running apps then pop back in to get it to come back.

Android color calibration (ie no calibration) sucks.
When will they get the message?
After 5+ years you would think they would know better?
I could calibrate my color throughput/monitor on Windows 15 years ago...
Make sure Bixby Vision and Bixby Vision Framework are not disabled; needed by the cam, the rest of Bixby can be disabled.
Check cam settings and manually set the AF lock point if you aren't. Try a data reset on the app and clear the system cache. Could be hardware but more likely user, settings, software or firmware related.
My browser will lock up if too many windows are open (52 open now) or if the browser cache gets too large or corrupted. Might the browser; my primary one is Brave. The Samsung browser handles about 15 or so open windows.
I chased down dozens of issues on my 10+ to get it where it is today over mostly a 6 month period.
I'm careful about all updates and new apps as these can cause havoc especially the former.
Still running on Pie because it's fast, stable, secure enough for my setup and everything is now running well.
Constantly upgrading is time consuming at best and the outcome not always an improvement. I use the factory load for a bunch of apks still... with good results.

You don't need Bixby Vision and Bixby Vision Framework enabled for the camera to work.
