Worth upgrading to Pixel 3 Xl (price of two P2XL) instead of Pixel 2XL from Nexus 6P? - Google Pixel 3 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

I have used Nexus 6p for 3 years and was holding off from upgrading to Pixel 2XL since I wanted to see what Pixel 3 Xl offers.
New Pixel 2XL is available for $500 including tax while same cost $955 in my country. Essentially I would be paying prices of two Pixel 2XL for Pixel 3XL.
I have sufficient money to buy the Pixel 3XL but it's not like I have lots of cash lying around to burn.
Out of the features not coming to Pixel 2XL, I mostly care about Top shot(Is Top shot really a hardware feature?) and Super Res Zoom only.
https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/...ing-older-pixel-phones-will-remain-exclusive/
Questions
Should I just buy Pixel 2Xl and skip Pixel 3XL? Pixel 2Xl will anyway receive android Q & R, so I will be up-to-date on android for 3 years.
Main concern I have with Pixel 2XL is the poor screen with blue shift, bad colors and black crush. Are these issue by Google in the latest hardware revision of Pixel 2XL?
How is the non-gaming performance of Pixel 2XL after 1 year compared to Pixel 3XL?
Is Top shot be available on Pixel 2XL through modded APK?
Is the PVC really updated? https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Google+Pixel+3+XL+Teardown/113656 says it's not, however, XDA reported its updated.
Has anyone here chose between 2XL & 3 XL after Pixel 3XL launched? Please share your thoughts.

In my opinion, it is totally worth it. I too wrestled with this question for long, but you also get better water proofing, an extra year of updates, wireless charging, a Samsung-made screen (instead of LG), some additional features that won't come to previous pixels. Coming from a Note 8, I have to say the difference is abysmal. The battery lasts me almost all day under heavy use (something my note was NEVER able to do), and the picture quality is unreal. I know the money part hurts, but trust me, you won't be disappointed. I for one have not really had any issue at with this phone. It is easily, the best phone I've ever had in a lot of levels.

BTW, Top Shot is great and who wants to wait months before it's actually available through a Rom (if it's even possible)? I used it last night at a club and got great shots of everyone.

I would get it just for the screen alone. I upgraded from the P2XL to the P3XL and it took me a week to get used to the screen but its so much better. If I was coming from the 6P I would definitely get it. The camera features will probably be ported over to the P2XL since they are mostly software, but spend the money now and skip the Pixel 4.

The pixel 2 xl is going to be supported 1 year longer than normal due to the issues the phone had when it was 1st released. Instead of 12 month warranty, you get 24 month. And if you order extracare, it is increased an extra 12 months so it would be good for 3 years instead of 2.

S8+ oe pixel xl

There is no doubt that s8+'s aesthetic is far better than the pixel, but i am a nexus user since nexus 4 and i am used to the bloatware free pure android experience, i had a note 3 and my wife has the galaxy s6 which both of them had and have their hiccups, but my Nexus 6p since november 2015 is running smoothly, no hiccup, no lags etc. I really wanted to by the pixel xl but i couldn't find it some time now, now that i can buy it, its already 5 months old and in less than a month i can get the s8+. The only reason im posting and considering it is because im afraid that s8 and s8+ will start to lag after some months. So my question is, overall (design, display, power, camera and software) which phone is better at average?
Thanks in advance!
I've used the s8+ at best buy and when placed next to my pixel xl with spigen case, they are the exactly the same size. The s8+ display was bright and contrasty. Didn't really see too much change in the camera department from last years s7 edge. I believe the s8+ ticks all the boxes for being better except software. You may want to wait for the pixel xl2 later this year to see a better comparison.
Both in hand... I'm selling my pixel XL. Lol only advantage is the monthly updates. Hope Samsung doesn't fail too bad in this department.

For comparison I checked it out myself and I do like the large display and aesthetics however I'm definitely staying with my Pixel XL. The S8/S8+ I think is a great phone that you can't go wrong with, it's feature packed as usual, definitely innovating and if I had to buy a phone right now I admit I would choose the S8/S8+ (prior to becoming accustomed to my Pixel XL). There are things I miss that Samsung offers yet there are things I think Samsung fails at that the pixel is great at. If I were you I would generally go with the newer phone unless you can hold out for the Pixel 2... however know there will always be a newer phone.
Design: Samsung on looks/aesthetics however I actually prefer aluminum (just feels better in my opinion);
Display: Samsung (body to phone ratio & brightness) however Pixel XL display is in no way disappointing;
Power: Samsung on paper ( however I stopped following specs, minipulated speed test for real hands on usage and in brief hands on I couldn't tell a difference),
Camera: I'm biased toward Pixel, it's just so great to me;
Software: The S8 was buttery smooth (but I've also experienced the occasional lag/issues on every Samsung over time although S7 performed the best which would leave me to believe the S8 is even better however the Pixel is like a well oiled machine, feel as I can't even force it to stutter.
If you really like your 6p then pixel is your phone, if you really want something newer than your 6P S8/S8+ is the way to go for right now
I'm definitely jumping to the S8+ from the Pixel XL. I love the look of the S8+, I appreciate the fact it's waterproof which does come into play often enough. With Nova I can make the S8+ look like the Pixel plus I really love Samsung Pay and its MST technology. My Pixel XL is up for sale if interested.

Thank you very very much, i have a better view now. On camera i am curtain that even my 6p is better than its competitor (s7/s7 edge) so im sure that pixel is better than the s8/s8+ too. I stopped watching on paper and speed tests because the difference will be 1-3 seconds in a 2 minutes comparison. I love my 6p but i consider my self a geek and i wanted the pixel sooo bad but the market in europe specially in Greece was too slow to get the pixel, so i guess because i really want to upgrade my phone at the moment i will get the s8+ and resell it when the pixel2 xl comes out to get my hands on it. Cheers mate
I want to buy once
Maybe when it have discount, at this time, it so hot!

Love my pixel XL, but selling it as soon as my S8+ arrives next week. You can't go wrong with either one. The Pixel XL camera is as good as Samsung's. Faster updates and clean, fast Android experience, or waterproofing and extra Samsung features.
*Edit* Quoted wrong person. Oops.
I preordered it and will test it out for a week or so, I tried the N7 and currently had the Nexus 6P and to me the 6P was still faster and smoother than the N7 by a long shot and wasnt good enough to me to justify trading at the time. Got the Pixel XL now and love it but went and looked at the S8+ in person and thing is one sexy piece of work. We will see if its worth the extra money or if I should just hold out for the Pixel 2XL.
I like my Pixel XL but I still ordered the S8+. I won't be selling the Pixel though.
Dumping my pixel XL as soon as my s8+ gets here. I have had continual Bluetooth issues with the pixel (even after it was updated last month).

The thing that leaves me personally completely disinterested in the Pixel is its price. Between its lack of expandable storage, super big bezels, lack of waterproofing, etc. it just doesn't seem like a phone worth $650-850 dollars to me. Like, you might as well just get a OnePlus 3T or one of the Moto phones for considerably cheaper with about 90% of the same features.
Now, if it was cheaper, or if it had the build quality of a S8 or LG G6, I'd probably never buy another non-Pixel phone again.

+1 on this - can't wait for Friday
I, too, also have a Pixel XL........and a Galaxy S8+ that is currently on the truck racing toward my house to be in my hands by the close of business today. I was also an S7 Edge user and briefly a Note 7 user, which is how I ended up with a Pixel XL (long story). Both devices have their merits. I really love the clean experience that the Pixel XL provides...as well as timely updates...and I personally love the downplayed aesthetic of the hardware. Google wanted the Pixel to be Android in your hand, rather than hardware. The Pixel is such a downplayed piece of hardware that it almost becomes invisible in the hand. It does away with that hardware barrier. On that note....Samsung makes top notch quality devices with a glut of features that seem to be increasingly less bloat-like and increasingly more useful with each subsequent generation of hardware. I also love Samsung Pay. I waver between wanting a clean experience on some days...and wanting to drive the Porsche on other days. Freedom of choice is a wonderful thing.

Should I buy Pixel 3 now?

Hi,
I love the images the Pixel 3 takes, and the front speakers.
I read a lot of compliments on the device, were those issues fixed? should I buy a Pixel 3?
(I know that the Pixel 4 launch is imminent, I am looking for a 600 USD price tag)
I came from a Nexus 5 and ran that thing into the ground before finally purchasing this device.
My view is this,
It's the best phone I could buy for the money. I paid $600.
I have a few quirks with available ROMs and Android pie, however I'm confident Android 10+ and TWRP devs will come around and relieve a lot of these things. They're invaluable for the pixel series.
I know deals are just around the corner and I suggest looking for $500 or less. Be patient. They'll happen pretty soon, keep your eye out.
Stay far away from Verizon since you can't unlock bootloader.
Disable wifi calling from your phone application if you have call quality issues.
OLED screen shows ghosting effect when pixels change from black to white too quickly. This was especially annoying for me for the first couple of months, but I've adjusted surprisingly well since then.
Every complaint you've heard about the Pixel 3 is typically a software issue. Everything this device supports and the hardware packed into it is amazing.
Front speakers were a big reason I bought the phone too! It's the only reason I prefer this over the pixel 4. Haha
I hope this helps you along with your decision and you're happy with whatever you purchase.

The Pixel 3 is currently $499 direct from Google. The Pixel 3 XL is currently $599. This is a $300 discount as the Pixel 4s are coming out next month. I jumped on this at the beginning of the month and bought both for my wife and I. We too had the Nexus 5 for a long time until switching to the LG G6 2 years ago. I normally don't switch phones after 2 years but this was too good to pass up. Also we are on Google Fi and these work perfectly with it.
I bought the 3 (non-XL) about two months ago when Google sent out the $300 off coupons. Had been on the Pixel 1 (non-XL) before that but the battery on that phone was starting to show its age.
I've been thrilled with the 3, and the update to Android 10 improved it even more. Let me know if you have specific questions, but I think it is a completely viable purchase at this stage of the game.
So I bought the device
Now it has Android 9, and due to the posts here I think I should wait before updating to Android 10
Mmmm, I'm also considering buying the Pixel 3 atm. But I have only one concern: battery life. What's your experience? Is it possible to use the phone for more than one day, with mediocre use?

I don't have a problem with mine lasting a full day. You could consider the Pixel 3XL instead which has a larger batter and screen. I bought that for my wife and now wish I had bought one for myself. It's not as big as I had expected.

Thanks for your quick reply! But one of the reasons I'm considering the Pixel 3 (and not the 3a for example) is the compact size. How much juice do you have at the end of the day? More than 30 percent?
It varies. I find it seems to use a lot of juice just sitting there, but I usually have more than 30% at the end of the day. I am not on it for an hour at a time, just checking things now and then.

I heard a lot of negative things about the battery life, so before purchasing my pixel 3 a month ago I was dubious; especially consider I owned a pixel 3xl at launch.
Anyhow, all I can say is I'm very surprised. It's got even better since android 10 came out. I get 5.5-6.5hrs screen on time a day, and everything is stock. So that's good enough for me.
Same here, very happy with my pixel 3. got it on a steal at best buy for $399
I have a Note 10 that I have until tomorrow to return. Thinking of grabbing the Pixel 3 to save some money. Battery isn't the best on the Note and I don't really use the S-pen.
Good idea or should I stick with the Note?
Having used Samsung and Pixel, I'll take a Pixel over any Samsung phone, based on the software and support experience. At the current $300 discount Pixel is a great option.
I'd say it depends on the price. If it's US$400-500, I'd say "Get it.", but if it's $600 or over, look for a better deal.
Having now seen the Pixel 4... if you can get a good deal on a Pixel 3 go for it. I don't see much benefit from the newer phone (except a year more security update support).

What would you do?

So I need to replace my Pixel 2 XL and was wondering how many of you switch from the Pixel 2 XL. I was thinking about the Pixel 4 XL and am on the fence. What should I do? I'm so indecisive. I've had Google phones since the Nexus 4 and am a little scared but want to be a big boy and possibly step out of my box.

i went from 2xl to the 7pro and what a night and day difference. I thought about the pixel but for the same price (maybe cheaper) outright, you can get a op7 pro or T
Don't have any of the Pixels, but I've had only Google phones since the Nexus One.
I ordered and returned the Pixel4xl, what a horrible, over priced pos. I got it at the black Friday price. Anyone who mentioned anything to me said,"oh, you got an iPhone?" because of the copycat design.
I also tried the equally disappointing Pixel3a xl and returned that as well.
Then, i got the one plus 7pro at $499, with twice the memory of the $699 special price 4xl, and wow! It's a great phone, while not perfect, i love it and people who see it are very impressed and look at it with envy, they want a phone like mine. First time ever!
Get the 7t do not get the pro like I did I HATE the curved screen. The rear drop is well worth the screen to body ratio let alone the ease of getting screen protectors that fit correctly. Truly the pixel 2 was a great phone and for the price of the one plus 7 either flat version. You'll be blown away do the force 90hz all the time paired with Nova launcher and you're set.
Disclaimer-. I love my OP7 pro but HATE the late of true AOD.

If you looked at all the leaks the pixel 4 camera design and body design leaked months before any iPhone CAD renderings did. Just little FYI and the people that said it was a iPhone copy are probably people who are to ignorant to worthy your time anyhow
I switched from pixel 3 xl to OnePlus 7 pro, the difference is like day and night. I'm really enjoying this beast, its fast, responsive and snappy. The notchless screen is lovely ( 90 Hz mode). And the build quality is premium, Sound quality is great too.
this is the first OS ( OOS) that I liked other than the pixels.
The only things that I'm missing are the camera quality ( stock camera is improving over updates and GCam is good. Gcam modders are spending a lot of efforts to improve Gcam performance) and the unlimited google photos storage.
knowing That I'm a google phone user since nexus 5 and literally I used them all.
My only concern is getting timely major OS updates, since I dont trust OnePlus in this aspect, because thy focus on their latest phones and they leave their previous ones. I know that OnePlus 6 series got Android 10, but that was after several months of releasing Android 10.

Did you upgrade to the Pixel 4 from the 3?

I've been thinking of upgrading to the Pixel 4 and just wanted some collective thoughts on why some of you have or have not went with the upgrade.
Mind you, I ran a Nexus 6 until I got the Pixel 3, but... why even think about it? Battery life appears to be worse. Insides are barely an upgrade. Camera, screen, yeah possibly minor upgrades, but I'm quite happy with the Pixel 3.
I'll hold on the the 3 until I get a 5G phone. And I'll probably have to upgrade the wife's OG Pixel first.
Last good Google phone was the Nexus 5. I regret getting this phone in the first place, no way I will get a 4.
Pixel 4 loses that unlimited original quality storage offering, so the Pixel 4 would be a downgrade. Bruh.
No way I'm upgrading to a Pixel 4 from my Pixel 3. I love how my Pixel 3 works and I think that going to a 4 would be a downgrade for me especially since I don't get unlimited photo storage with a Pixel 4.
I have had the 4 and went back to the 3 after a few days of use... Worse in hand feel, worse battery and no important upgrades for me. Software is up to date with the 3. Marginally better camera and yes better display on the 4. But this fake 90hz is a joke compared to OnePlus's always on 90hz. And when forcing this option in developer options the battery is more than a joke. I really liked the design of the 4 and the feel of the materials. Nevertheless it feels more chunky compared to the 3. If you ask me, the 3 is the superior buy if you can get one. If you have one, there is not really a reason to "upgrade"...
OK, I did get the wife one this week for $400. About the right price and her OG Pixel was off support. I'll keep my 3 until support runs out.

I second that, i got the pixel 3 the day android Q came out at Best Buy for $399
I honestly could not justify an $800 price tag, but at $300-400 it is the best phone one can buy, and really, if i don't get itchy to buy a new phone i would well skip the pixel 4 and 5, at least
Yes I did, but after a mount I returned to Pixel 3 again. For me the camera is in first place and there is not much difference from Pixel 4. Leaving that I think Google Pixel 4 is most beautiful phone at market now. I sold it at good price and I'm gonna buy it after few mounts just waiting for price drop.

Pixel 3/3XL Owners: Overall thoughts? What will be your next phone and why?

Hey all Pixel 3/3XL owners (and even those who don't own these devices but have kept up with the Pixel lineup of devices),
I'm just looking to gather some thoughts on what you guys thought about the Pixel 3/3XL phones overall and how they stacked up against your previous phones. I'm also looking to see what you guys think of the seemingly controversial Pixel 4 lineup of devices and lastly, what you now think of the Pixel phone brand in general.
Also, what do you think will be your next phone?
And just for clarification, I'm looking for opinions because I'll soon be in the market for a new phone, and to be honest, I've been a little disappointed with the Pixel lineup as of late because I feel that they've been taking the classic "Apple" approach. Of course, this is just my opinion, but I just feel like there have been fewer meaningful (to me) improvements with each recent Pixel iteration.
With that said, I'm currently thinking about moving to the Note 20 when it releases but usually have a very hard time making up my mind, lol. Hence this post!
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
5a. Battery and camera I'm not a power user so... I'll have to sell my pixel stand I guess.
Pixel 3 XL was my last Google phone. Started with the Galaxy Nexus and have had every one up to the 3 XL.
Moved to the Note 10+ back in October which I hate. Just went to the OnePlus 8 Pro two weeks ago and I love it. In my opinion (which doesn't mean much) OnePlus phones are the spiritual successor to the Nexus line.

I'm thinking OnePlus as well, but the prices in Canada are insane. Thinking I might look for a used one since they sell pretty low.

I need dual speakers. That's my must have....and root obviously. I know there are some gaming phones on the market with stereo speakers, but not on Verizon. Also some other phones are starting to use the earpiece and bottom speaker for stereo but the Pixel 2xl and 3xl and the Moto X Pure I had prior, all had front facing speakers. I briefly had the s8+, and although I could root it and it was a beautiful phone the speaker drove me nuts. Anyway, I'm gonna wait for what the 5 has to offer and decide where to go from there. I'll pull the trigger on something new at that time though, or shortly after.

Why'd you hate it (if you don't mind me asking) ?
My one annoyance with the Note lineup is that I'd have to get the unlocked, Exynos version for root...and I feel that the Exynos chips are a large value hit considering their generally crummy performance relative to their Qualcomm counterparts. Now I'm no mobile gamer, and so that doesn't bother me too much. But the previous Samsung phones have had poorer battery life with the Exynos chips, which is the biggest caveat for me.

Bloat (fixable using adb and/or PDP.) I'm used to mostly stock Google apps. Hiding them rather than freezing doesn't make sense to me since they are still taking up resources.
When using Google Pay on any other phone I've had I can unlock it with the pin or fingerprint and then just tap and pay. With the Note 10 I had to unlock, tap, unlock again. Faster to just use my card, which is what I ended up doing.
I prefer a mostly stock Android version. Also prefer fast updates.
No root (unlocked US version) so the minor annoyances were unfixable.
Overall the Note 10+ is a fantastic phone. Nice and fast. Just for me the small things add up. I also briefly used the Note 3 and didn't really like it that much either.

i sold my pixel 3xl months ago. got myself oneplus 8 pro and s20+. at the end i put my oneplus 8 pro at the side. i enjoy s20+ more. its not bloated like what most people claim.
I have the 3XL and this will be my last Google device. Since they went to bed with Big Red everything has changed. Bugs, poor battery life, and just poor quality of late has turned me off. Tie that to less than even lack luster support and I'm done.
Pixel 3 XL, Yep, Crashed It.....
..... Again.
Probably the Pixel 3 XL will be my last Google Phone. I use Nexus/Pixel since the Nexus 4, but Pixel 4 is a total disgrace. An ugly, old fashioned and expensive phone. The camera did not fascinate me like in Pixel 3 XL. Average/poor battery life. Now to complete the mess, the master mind behind the pixel's cameras, Marc Levoy quits from Google before the Pixel 4a launch. The media said that Pixel 5 will not going to be a flagship, a huge step back. I like the Google phones because it shows how the Android supposed to be, but i can't accept use a mid range phone in 2020/2021. Maybe I will change to Oneplus, but, I hate that stupid curved display. Probably will buy the Iphone 12 Pro. Iphone 11 é very nice deal. Huge battery life, awesome specs, a very nice camera AND CHEAPER then pixel 4 at their launch. It's still a very good deal until today. It's time to give Apple a chance since my last Iphone 4. For me to stay in Google Phones, Pixel 5 must be a thing that I never seen before in a smartphone.
I wish luck to all who will stay with the Pixel line. Google did a pretty big mess with it.
Because of the safetynet issue with root & xposed + the crappy wearos watches I'll probably switch to iPhone, the dark side with jailbreak it's the best imho
I'm most likely going to get a red magic 5g gaming phone, I like my pixel 3 xl but it's time for a change because of the lack of rom support and the a/b ****
My next phone will have an unlockable bootloader and will have Open Network function on Verizon. I will not use android without adblocking, or with gapps.

I wanted the pixel 4, but the lack of fingerprint sensor was a little bummer for me, plus google photos "Limited" quality... the Pixel 5 might be for me but seems there will be only pixel 4a which sucks, has a "middle range" snapdragon, not sure how it's comparable with pixel 3xl tho. I really like stock Android but let's see...
Never buying a Google phone again, camera is the best no doubt but battery and gaming performance sucks, heating issues and visible throttling due to heating. Probably gonna buy OnePlus 8
The Pixel 3XL will, more than likely, be my last Google phone. I finally pulled my wife away from Apple's ecosystem and convinced her to give Android a try. So, we both got Pixel 3XLs when it came out nearly two years ago. Since then, I have been less than impressed with this phone. Personally, I've been with the Nexus/Pixel line since the Nexus 4. The 3XL has been a big disappointment to me, and my wife ,who reluctantly gave Android a shot.
Here has been our mutual experience.
Terrible battery life.
Roll-of-the-dice security patches. (Will my battery life get better or worse with this one?)
Terrible RAM management. (News and music playing in the background? "Pick one or the other", says the Pixel.
Great Camera, no doubt.
Google: "You like that app? Well, we're shutting it down"
This truly felt like a beta phone for a flagship price. I wish I would have put my money elsewhere, because as a stock Android lover, this was disappointing.
My wife will more than likely want to jump over to iPhone again, and you know what, I don't blame her. For me at least, it seemed like Google just rushed a phone out for the sake of being competitive.
Yeah, I've had some positive experiences to say about it. The camera was and is absolutely fantastic. The fingerprint sensor is fast and accurate 99% of the time, and the speakers are loud enough for me. As for a daily driver? I would have looked elsewhere If I had known.
I have been a hardcore Google phone user since the Galaxy Nexus, but after the 3 XL I think I am going to jump ship. Google phones have awesome software, but the hardware is years behind the competition. I plan to keep using my 3 XL until the OnePlus 9T Pro is released next fall, then it's sayonara Google devices! OnePlus phones catch my eye because they have excellent hardware and are easily hackable, exactly what I'm looking for in a phone.
I will probably get the 5 XL. It follows my new phone every 2 years pattern.
