Elephant-in-the-room Question: Will Verizon lock bootloader again? - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

This is likely an obvious answer to some or many, but I have not been able to find a clear answer myself. Will VZ keep the bootloader locked, and thus no easy way for ROM development or deployment on their provided P3's? Or is there a light at the end of this tunnel?

I think until people start getting their phones we wont have an answer. I'm thinking the Verizon P3 may come locked. I think people said in the past the ones coming from google are unlocked until activated (I'm not fully sure on that as I am a soon to be first time pixel owner). So getting the phone rooted first maybe ideal. Once a root is made of course

I just got my pixel3 today, OEM unlocking is greyed out and says unavailable to carrier-locked devices

This puppy will be locked down based on previous years experience and the addition of the new Titan M chip. I think, while not impossible, it will also be harder than other years to unlock.

If you care about an unlocked bootloader and root, I would return it and get the unlocked version while you still can.

Did the old Pixel's come with any kind of security chip? I've only had Samsungs in the past so I don't know too much on that.

No worries... I figured it wouldn't be that easy. I was able to OEM unlock the original Pixel out of the box. Work purchased it for me so I can't do much.

Forget Verizon.. what do you think about this? https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/10/17/google-explains-new-titan-m-chip-makes-pixel-3-secure/

did you activate it first or remove the sim and skip all the connection prompts? what did you do when you first got it besides take out of the package?

I'm wondering the same thing, i ordered a carrier unlocked version from the google store in hopes that in the future i can root and flash roms if i choose too. I guess i'll have to wait and see what happens.

I'm surprised nobody has posted anything about it yet. First thing I'm doing with mine tomorrow is unlocking the bootloader. Hopefully nothing has changed.
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk

I was told by a Google Support Chat Person (reliable source I know, haha) that the bootloader would be unlockable on the carrier unlocked versions purchased from the Google Store. She said that the Verizon versions would not be bootloader unlockable. I've pre-ordered an unlocked version, but I use Verizon as a carrier. There are very few developer-friendly options out there for VZW users (I'm upgrading from an Axon 7 running a custom ROM). That Android Police article makes me a bit nervous, but I'll wait until the phone gets into more developer hands to see how difficult it will be to mod. I was planning on unlocking the bootloader first thing, I can give it a try when it arrives tomorrow.

google store version unlocked just fine with "fastboot flashing unlock" as usual

I didn't activate at first, skipped all the prompts. But when I got into developer options, the OEM unlock is greyed out and says activate phone or connect to internet. After I activated it, it was still greyed out but gave me the carrier locked phone message instead. The only other thing I did was turn off automatic updates.

You don't have to worry unless you purchase through Verizon. My job purchased mine so I didn't really have a say, I'm just happy to get a pixel3. If you buy it through any other retailer, it will be unlockable. Google phones always have been.

What frustrates me is how "the man" locks down open source! The whole point of Android was to be able to develop it! Frankly, most of the daily used features were developed first in the community of ROM baking. To limit them is to turn us all into iphone users. It was 'sky's the limit' at first. I had me the original Google Developer G1. I watched those custom roms turn from JesusFreak to Cyanogenmod to Cyanogen as a company. Locking down a phone should simply come with a warning. VZW and others only have to say, if you break this you buy it, and we won't support you. It's how the open source world works! Works fine for Cannonical and Redhat among others. Open source is how Amazon AWS and Google GCP stay alive! Even MS is getting on board with their linux offerings and inclusions now.

Here we go again, same story.. same ending. VZW will lock the bootloader, why can't we just put this to bed? You want development then you know what to buy it's as simple as that. To claim they are the "man" holding you in captivity is disingenuous. They have a business model and you just don't fit into it. Leave it at that. They don't care what you think or how many posts you put up. They care that they can go to a corporate network admin and sell them 10,000 phones because they can't be rooted or bl unlocked. Attacks, viruses, and the overall ubiquitous use of cell phones is a long way from Cyanogen days. It's not about the warranty or support. It's about sales, period.
It does look like the Google version is bl unlockable but it's certainly preventing programs from running at this point. They need a kernel to bypass the check which should come pretty soon.

I had this issue too. First I had to turn on USB debugging. Then I closed out of settings and went back in and saw that it wasn't greyed out anymore. I was concerned at first too, but then was able to unlock the bootloader no problem.

I side effect of the this two versions of one phone is that when you RMA these or buy used you might get the wrong version. I have RMA's right through Google with my Google purchased phone and it would not unlock because they are all one model to Google. It's pretty said.

Yeah I know about that. Very frustrating for those that wish to bl unlock. I'm not in that category any longer although I'm thinking of unlocking my 5X now that I have this and a Pixel 2 as a backup. Those were the days. flashing unlock and done.

You do understand that you will have to PAY for the unlock process once you've installed Sunrise, right? The app doesn't just do the job by itself. I paid for it; well worth the price, but I want to make sure that you get that.

Unfortunately, only buying unlockable phones limits the playing field substantially. I'd rather pay for the abilities of developers like jcase and others who figure out a way around the roadblocks. And again, you do realize that you need to pay "per device" for Sunrise to unlock, right? Your Sunrise license from your other handset won't work on the new M8. (Still worthwhile, just a heads up).
Sounds good. I'll gladly pay $25 to unlock my M9 once I have it that is. I'm looking forward to it.

Sprint - Anyone regret unlocking the bootloader

So I just picked up a refurbished Sprint v20. It is currently at zv3 so i'll be able to use Dirty Santa. My issue is do I? I know there's no going back since there isnt a factory image for Sprint.
If you've unlocked, are you happy you did so?
Very happy. but im biased since i made it...
Well, I didn't need much convincing. Thanks! Very smooth process, it's really nice to actually have TWRP on a lg phone again. Haven't had that since my LG G2.
yea it was a no brainer for me coming from a sgs7e , i hated the fact i could not do nanddroids or flash custom roms, i love my v20.
Bootloader possibly unlocked
So I just called Sprint and reemed them on how there bootloader practices are illegal and that this is an open source phone. Not an Iphone. My device is paid off ect. They supposedly are fully unlocking it as we speak. In the mid of a six hour phase I guess. I was told not to reboot during six hours. On ZVD firmware btw. If this does happen to get fully unlocked including bootloader ect., can I finally root my phone? I really hope so. I am running out of options.

Well at around 4/5pm est. I am going to check. When I reboot it should tell me if unlocked right? If its not, then I will call again. I specifically told them bootloader and reasked. She said yes and that I will able to do whatever I want to with it. My network was already unlocked as well before I even called.

Sadly I did not notice any difference. I got an Android update message a few times. That happens daily though. I will call them tomorrow. Had a few unforseen events happen that strained original plans. Either way this is bull****. They should not be allowed to lock an open source down. I am trying to get this taken care of. Open source doesn't mean you have to have an unlocked bootloader. Open source just means you must be provided with a copy of the source code of the open source components (some parts are closed source), which LG has complied by allowing anyone access through this site.
Personally I'd be surprised if it's even technically feasible for them to unlock your bootloader.

Ok...well anyway not being able to root is still garbage. Especially on a device that is paid off. I only pay for service.
Love also how - the variant is rootable and this one is not game. So should I be mad a Sprint or LG? Whos fault is it?Rooting is perfectly legal. Seems blocking it is just as legal in this case.

Because this has the flagships that I want. Except root. Cant even find a rootable one to buy unless I get a non sprint phone. I am also not posting out of anger, but for irritation of companies thinking that thay can do what ever and we have to take it.
Was wondering tho, if I am network unlocked, cant I take to a different carrier and their firmware would replace Sprints ZVD one (cdma I know) , and then be able to root via that phone/firmware method?

If it wasn't for antirollback (all other firmware, except the h918 which has a different key so no other variant can flash it, is antirollback 0) you could, but the way it is you'd brick if you forced it on there.

would a Verizon Pixel 2 be able to have the bootloader unlocked as of now? (Mar. 16)

if i went to a Verizon store tomorrow and got a Pixel 2, and removed the sim and disabled WiFi, would i still be able to unlock the bootloader and root?
there is only a $35 restocking fee, but i'm only vaguely familiar with the unlock procedure for the Pixel 2, and haven't found any recent posts about it. obviously if i learn that it is possible, i will more heavily research the procedure. i'm just trying to avoid a $35 restocking fee if at all possible.
another thing i am wondering about as of writing this is, does updating a Verizon Pixel 2 relock the bootloader and kill root? would buying the phone from Google make it update safe?
thanks for all your help!

If Verizon figures out you've unlocked the bootloader, they can and/or will refuse to accept it. There are threads following the Verizon version, which should have the answers your looking for.
Why even bother with Verizon at all? You've answered your own questions.
Purchase from Google, root with no worries of a relocked bootloader ever happening, and you can rest easy.
Also, 35% of $1000, is $350.

I don't know if it is still able to be unlocked. Odds are that as long as it is not updated past the January update, then you can unlock the bootloader. Once unlocked though, there is very little chance any update would relock it for two reasons:
1. OTA Updates fail when you're unlocked
2. If it did relock, it would wipe your phone. Verizon wouldn't want that bad PR from wiping people's without consent.

It's a regular pixel 2, it doesn't cost anywhere near $1k and very few people have the multi touch bug. Even if you did, this phone has a 2 year warranty, so you're covered either way.

Probably it's already been updated to the March update, so no. And even though the January (and November) firmware is still at Google's site, it's probably locked against downgrading. (Anyone with a non-unlockable bootloader want to try?)

my friend at the verizon store was willing to check the software versions on the boxes, and found one that was before OPM2.171019.016. i'm not sure what, but it was OPM1.xxxxxx.xxx. some were already OPM3.xxxxxx.xxx.
it isn't true that an unlocked bootloader = a failed OTA update, as this was the issue i had with my Pixel 1. i got it early, unlocked with depixel8, and rooted. i then disabled OTA updates, and yet somehow, one made it through. it did not relock my bootloader, but it did leave me on a software version that was not rootable, even though my bootloader was unlocked. it is my main concern. but also, i want updates, i just want them to happen on my terms and not break my device.
any thoughts?

I would suggest searching through the forums for your answers which have been posted numerous times. You've opened a second thread to a discussion that has been addressed in its entirety here. https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/how-to/unlock-bootloader-verizon-pixel-2-t3730076
Again the question of "How do I update my phone when it is rooted/BL unlocked" has been answered over and over. Probably good to try and keep the forum clean and searchable for everyone. That's the preferred method.
@MikeChannon Can you please lock this thread before it goes into the wild? Duplicate post

Huawei removing bootloader unlock codes for all huawei and honor devices

Such sad news, I literally got my device today!
The problem for me is that even though I could unlock my device now, the pull of users and developers to this device is going to plummet to zero on xda , there won't be any (or very few) ROM's, adopters will avoid the device... It's a horrible move from huawei who have a sponsor partnership with xda?? Xda have said they're going to fight it but my guess is huawei may look at their wallet rather than their hearts and stick to their guns.
By all accounts it's "to provide a better service". ???
I have a cooling off period for another 13 days.
If things don't change in a week I'm sending this wonderful opportunity phone back.
Never again
https://www.xda-developers.com/huawei-stop-providing-bootloader-unlock-codes/
Edit: all that being said, I like this phone too much, even runs ppsspp and dolphin the same as the onelus 5 did, I've unlocked the bootloader, installed twrp and rooted and now it's running perfectly.
Going to give it a chance.

In the same boat mate, received the phone on Wednesday, got the bootloader unlock code sitting in my email index waiting to be used....and now I see this.
In two minds about the whole thing, on one hand love the phone it seems pretty damn great to me, only want to root for 2 issues (not fault of phone, just personal preference) but on the other hand, lack of ability to unlock bootloader will kill the community here. Do I keep it, unlock and just roll with it, or do I send it back and get something else (Galaxy Note or S9+ probably, community there aint dead lol)?
Have to have a good think about it over the weekend I think.

Avoid the galaxy unless you like baggage and more rules, if I was to buy another phone it would be the HTC 12, no doubt about it.
Personally I've used the unlock code twrp installed and I'm rooted.
Phones a beast, I personally think Huawei will decide against their decision, by all accounts HTC did the same and look what happened to them
Currently looking at debranding from the L09 to the L29 as updates are more timely. Either that or wait for some ROMs to drop.
I'm keeping it now, it's swayed me.
Although I'd I could get the HTC I'd do it in a heartbeat, epic development on XDA.

Since the phone is treble enabled we can use GSI. So theres no "real" need to have an active development community dedicated for this phone only.

You don't necessarily need to convert from L09 to L29 to get faster updates, you just need to change region from 782 to 432. The L09 & L29 firmwares are interchangeable and are released together but it's UK specific updates that are lagging behind.
Saying that, I don't think there's a way to convert to 432 without being converted to L29 in the process anyway lol
the unlock page is back, just used it... don't tgink will last for long... make sure to be logged with your huawei account

Which version of TWRP did you use? The official one or the non official one? Both have threads in these forums, but the official one seems to have more complaints and problems in its thread.
Thinking of getting unlock code... Does it end warranty? And how do I get product ID, that #*#*1357946*#*# thing did not work. Yes, did try right code, one i wrote here might not be remembered correctly?

Like i said, when I tried to get product ID the code was certainly right. To that message i took it out of memory, and did not remember it right. Funny, i can get for example imei code with right "dialer code" but not that product code. How to proceed? Would like to get unlock code, to be on safe side if I some day (probably sooner than later) want to use it.

Got it to work, just needed to make phones original dialer default dialer... And, well, knowing me, I'm just moments away from unlocking bootloader and rooting

Keep hold of the bootloader unlock code you got as if they go ahead with removing the service, they're likely to release updates in the future that will relock unlocked bootloaders on install. You should be able to re-unlock with the same code but it's a pain as an update won't wipe data but then having to re-unlock will ?

There's another site that does them.
Can't recall the name.
Just ordered the P20 Pro today after I upgraded my partners one yesterday to the P20. Its looks a fantastic phone so I had to go one better and get the pro. I got the unlock code for hers and will request mine tomorrow. Is there any need to use the unlock code? I don't plan on hoping for a better ROM as the stock one looks pretty reasonable to me.

It is but rooting etc has its benefits, you've only got to go on a few threads here to see that.
Plus who knows what the future holds plus treble is always an option

Fingers crossed
I am really excited to get the full potential of my device which I just bought it for a hefty money last night about $400
Let the tinkering begin!
Eh? Nokia 8 already got kernel sources a while back. We just don't have official bootloader unlock, otherwise we can develop

Yeah really what is the point of having kernel source codes with locked bootloader
I have tried Ntool as well but their server has been down for awhile now and so far no luck for us to unlock our device bootloader.
What a great shame for NOKIA that such cutting edge technology and hefty price and yet it has left unusable.
I'm really about to regret of paying $400 for a useless phone.

Well, here I can see that @Hikari has some methods to getting it done, but the problem is
that I'm not able to confirm whether it works for my phone or not and he never mentioned anything about refunding if he couldn't unlock my bootloader.
Unfortunately, my phone was auto updated itself to the latest August security patch and I don't think it can be downgraded or not.

Yeah I feel you, yesterday I found a Ntool 20 packs credit from the web, I managed to get my phone bootloader unlocked, but that bothering warning is really walking on my nerve and funny thing is that it is in poor English in both dictation and grammar, Nokia really need to consider these tiny things if it wants to be regarded as a serious competitor.

It can be removed by flashing another boot logo but we'll need to mess with the kernel if we wanna get that warning removed.

I am not a developer so I have no experience with that. Perhaps someone here knows how exactly to do it?
