Audio vs Note 9 vs V30 vs V35 - LG V20 Guides, News, & Discussion

Just wanted to post some observations from visiting various stores that had the Note 9, V30, V35 (AT&T) and my V20 with a solid pair a headphones. In my case I'm using the V-Moda Wireless 2 with and without the plug in cord.
Note 9 with cord. If you turn on their Dolby sound button in the phone's pull down.. Pretty spectacular. The highs get a little bright with the volume up at maximum but I don't really listen that loud as I dont want to be deaf before 50. On Bluetooth it's remarkably similar. Compared to my V20 with the DAC on I'd give the a slight edge to the V20 in that the bass was better depending on the track. But even in bass heavy track I could still physically feel the rumble with the Note 9, just not as tight and deep as the V20 but by the end of the song I didn't notice it anymore. Mind you that was for a deep heavy track. I used a bass compilation that was a top YouTube search result. The Dolby setting is a clear enhancement when using headphones. Whether you think it's true sound is up to you but with a $200 and higher set of headphones its hard to complain too much.
The V30 with cord. Here you have to say it's pretty even although you get an extra setting in addition to the DAC on Oreo that I don't recall being mentioned in the initial V30 reviews. You get some new EQ type presets for enhanced, bass, live, etc.
I have a few FLAC files from Beatport (phone also supports DSD, and MQA like the V20). The sound was pretty amazing for something without an external DAC. Almost to the point where I'm like why even bother spending $800 on the Note 9. You can get a refurbished V30 for about $270 now. New for $350-$400. The Note 9 has promotions typically putting it at $800. At any rate I'd say the V30 had a slightly better sound overall to the Note 9 but again not by a margin that would make you feel you were missing anything.
The V35 with cord. I think it uses the same ESS SABRE 9218P Quad-DAC as the V30. Would be crazy to go through the expense of a diffrent DAC for such a niche feature. I could not tell much of a difference between the V30 and V35 if any.
At this point I'm leaning heavy towards the Note 9 since it has a 512 GB version with 8 GB RAM over the 128 GB 6 RAM standard version. I'm thinking the resale for this might be pretty strong because there will be a high quantity of standard Note 9 in the market for such a popular phone. With all the glass on such a big phone there will be a ton of refurbished phones being sold from people who dropped their phones and had to replace under insurance. Once Samsung lower the price under $800 and some new aggressive promotions to milk the Note 9 sales to the max it will be their best selling Note for sure. The V40 will also be the same sort of story... but under a much faster discounting curve. By the time the G8 or comes out in spring the V40 should be down to $650 from the $900+ introduction price.
Considering the V30 lost more than half it's value in 12 months I'm definitely in no hurry to buy the most expensive LG phone ever. And they didn't match Samsung on the Note 9's 4,000 mAh battery. Major bummer. But the V30 battery was pretty impressive compared to the very mediocre V20 battery life. Maybe once again the V40 will do more with less and hit 5-6 hours screen on time. With an extended battery case you might match the Note 9 at a lower price all in. The issue with the Samsung is all that lag you start to get after about a 9 months. They gotta do something about that.
Also,
If you have the official V20 charging cradle, the iPosible 6700 mAh extended battery on Amazon fits in the cradle. Something you can't do with other extended batteries. This is a great discovery for me because now I can charge the extended battery at my desk while the phone is in use with the stock battery. Takes about 2 hours to get a charge that's been giving me about 7 hours screen on time and no heat issues. Excellent for using the DAC. While I love the ability to swap out the battery the stock battery can get me as little as 2 hours SOT sometimes.

From what I understand the V20 does not support MQA - I spent a lot of time reading the entire V20 thread over at Head-Fi over the past week and while it's mentioned a few times, there appears to be an issue with the V20 and proper true MQA decoding potential. I found a thread at the UAPP forum where the developer specifically told a user that even in spite of the checkbox being available under the HiRes driver flags it should not be checked on the V20 simply because it doesn't work on that device, there's no hardware support for unfolding the MQA data stream.
The V30 has this capability, but the V20 doesn't. The audio will be passed to the DAC of course but it's not true MQA unfolding.

Yep that's the one. I've gotten invalid battery eventually with every after market battery. If I buy 3 spares it will happen to at least one. The warranties are usually good for a year. And I always ask for a replacement and generally they send one if I show them a screenshot of the invalid battery notice. So far so no issues. it seems to be working better after the Oreo update because of the new background management. I didn't hesitate to buy it because it's the same cost as buying 2 replacement batteries.

Is it still worth buying a S6 in 2017 ?

So I want to get a new phone, and I was thinking of getting the S6 by the way my budget looks like at the moment since I am thinking a new phone in the price range I have in mine won't offer anything up to that. I want to mention that I am not a heavy user, but I do want a phone with a good camera, audio and display quality.
Also I won't look at buying a new one, but a second hand one.
Hi !
What's your price range ?
The S6 is really a good device and have indeed a good camera, audio and display quality but the bad point is battery life.
With 2550mah I can get only 1 full day with 3hours of screen on. I have changed my battery since a few month now.
Getting a second hand S6 will expose you to the risk of getting even worst battery life.
Only problem is battery...
Imho phone without 3k+ mah battery isnt enough no matter heavy user or not...
All the rest s6 is more the enough
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Now that's some good advice above!
Like mentioned above, you'll probably have to replace the battery if it's a second hand though
It is still a very, very good phone but you may have to invest in a external battery if you are away from a mains power source for quite a while

My price range is up to 300 euros/dollars.
If you like to put AOSP custom roms on your phone, stay away from the S6. It is on it's way, but from from being completely stable.

If that is the case, it's a great phone! The Exynos 7420 is plenty fast, as it was truly ahead of its time. Battery life is decent. Screen is great.
for the given price and the amount of roms available not at all(and battery is like ****)... i made a foolish decision by buying this phone in 2016 when one plus 3 was available at a cheaper price... don't but this phone now.
I think if you can pick up an s6 for between 200-250 pounds, that's a good deal. It has a decent soc, screen and camera, yes battery could be better but that comes down to your usage and at some point depending on how old the handset is you might want to have the battery replaced. If you really value battery life then there are probably better devices but you will give up screen/cpu/ camera quality.
this year a lot middle range phones comes wit sd625 chip, which has +- performance like s6 Exynos. new sd 625 brand phones (if not Chinese brands) are expensive or same price like s6, but without super camera or screen like s6, wireless charger and etc. One bad thing with s6 - battery. I better buy 2 year old new s6 than mid class than mid class this year phone.

You can go for the S6 then !
You may have to replace the battery or buy a powerbank which is QC 2.0 compatible for best charging speed.
Like it has been said above, mid range phones will fail in the camera part and in the material used to build the device.
The only good point would be that mid range 2017 will get longer support than the S6 which is almost 2 years old now.
Anyway, Samsung updated the S6 to Nougat which is a really good news and the experience is even better than it was before.
You can also enjoy pretty neat features that you won't find on other mid range phones like the wireless charging, the led notification (not present in mid range samsung) or again the amazing camera
S6 is still a very good device. The camera is still one of the bests, the processor is fast enough, the display is magnificent. The battery is the only big disadvantage.
my s6 is 2years old and im still using it now, very good camera, very good display, still fast and smooth only downsidr is battery so i have a powerkbank when im outside
in my opinion it is worth to buy s6 until now
Just make sure the device has had the battery replaced as the original one will have degraded quite a bit in the last two years.
you better buy oneplus because even if you buy s8 its not worht it because you dont get support so wait for the one plus 5 with 8 gb ram, dual camera, fingerprint on the back, 5.5 inch amoled qhd display, oneplus logo with backlight you can use it as home button, and snapdragon 835 clocked at 2.45.
and its gonna kick the s8 of its thrones
Hey Raulz0r!
I own a Galaxy S6, and I have to say, it's an amazing phone camera/performance/display wise. The downside is the battery, but in my daily use, that only happens when I'm on 3G/4G data as it really drains the battery out so that's why I bought a 10000mah portable charger/power bank and now my phone's battery life doesn't bother me that much anymore. But if you're not into the habit of carrying a portable charger around, well, that will be a problem.
Cheers
If I had the opportunity I would definitely buy S8 or S8+. It is great if you are coming from old model phone also.
I bought S6 in january 2017 and I will pay for it around 240eur in total. Its on contract for 2years and costs Me 9,94eur a month. This purchase was spontan as My old phone (LG G3) contract was almost over and I kinda wanted a new phone. LG G3 still works ok and I willing to sell it. My toughts about tgis phone right now - somewhere in middle. Biggest issue I have is whit touchscreen. I don't know it is Me or what but response can be sometimes too sensitive and not responding compleately outside in winter. This is a major issue for Me as G3 was working as expected. I must use correction on S6 all the time. Screen - I haven't bin a fan of super amoleds and I'm still not. Colors are too saturated and from some angles it looks ****ty and cheep. On highest brigtness it looks also bad. Vibration - on hard surface it makes a lit of sound, and again - it makes phone look like entry-level. Battery - small, but I use phone onky up to 3h sot and I charge evety night. It isn't an issue for Me. Phone look and feel in hands - it is slippery, but I like alunium bezzels and thickness. Sound is good on speaker and headphones. Processing power is ok for Me. I'm not a heavy user as I mentioned. FB usage only in web broweser, so is Instagram. Camera is ok for phone, but don't expect dsrl quality for now on any phone. Heartrate sensor is a toy to play whit, but can be quite inaccurate, but I like Samsung Health app and GPS performance. GPS was a very noticable improvements over G3.
Overall for 240eur I'm not complaining, but if I would pay 300, 400 eur I would take it back. Biggest complain would be about touchscreen performance. If You spotted typo mistakes it because of that.

Realistic options for a replacement to the Moto X Pure

So I am getting sick of the battery life of this device and charging twice a day just to get by... the QC helps but it isn't always a viable option for someone who is on the road/travels a lot. I am probably going to go back to my Moto G 2015 for the time being as I could get a full days use most of the time on a single charge and just selling my MXPE.
But now the question comes up as what to replace it with... Moto G 5th gen, Blu Pure XR, ZTE Axon 7 Mini, or ???
My requirements are simple, or so I think...
1) 4+ hours SOT, preferably 5+, in mixed signal environment of WiFi/LTE/3G and sometimes without the best signal strength (for reference, I currently get about 2.5 hours on MXPE)
2) 5.2"-5.7" screen with 1080p minimum resolution
3) Stock Android, "near" stock, or simple UI (no TouchWiz, EMUI, ZenUI, or other bloated UI) that allows easy use of replacement launcher
4) 64GB internal storage or 32GB internal+microSD
5) 3GB or more of RAM
6) Full AT&T network compatibility (GSM 850/1900 and LTE Band 2/4/5/12/17 and optionally 29/30)
7) Nougat or Marshmallow with a Nougat upgrade "guaranteed"
8) 3.5mm headphone jack
9) Dual band WiFi - 2.4 & 5Ghz
10) $300USD or less
Would be nice, but not essential...
1) Unlockable bootloader (implies root/custom recovery/ROM development community)
2) Front facing speakers
3) NFC
4) USB 3.0
Absolute no no's are Samsung, Asus, or Huawei/Honor devices.
What else fits these requirements that I am not considering?
I believe the one phone that comes to mind that would fit most of your requirements is the Axon. I took a break from the MXPE (when it flew off my roof and died a horrible death in a rain storm) and had the Axon 7 (normal size) for about a month. You will get NEAR 4 hours of SoT, a qhd screen, 5.5 inches, relatively light for metal body. Unlockable bootloader and decent dev for it, last I checked. Things that bothered me/ pissed me off were that DTTW was laggy and slow, the actual cell service seemed to be really bad, possibly because of the full metal body phone, and the biggest annoyance - no backlit capacitive buttons, so you were left sort of blind in the dark trying to hit buttons. There is also no way through the build.prop to enable the on-screen buttons to bypass the issue at night, last I checked.
LG V20 could be an option too since it has a bootloader unlock now, 3.5-4.5 hours of SoT. I think it has a bottom bezel speaker though, which is a little weird, and as always the LG software has complaints. The dev is good enough to get around that though.
I'm in the same boat as you though. I've been looking pretty hard to find a new phone and the V20 is the only one I am really considering right now.

Would love to... tell me where I can get a new OP3T for under $300... That one is a hard stop requirement.
@xgerryx Same for LG V20 and Axon 7 (which never goes on sale, although the Mini does often), the $300 price point is a big deal
This phone has been a little disappointing. It's good, but definitely not great. It's a night and day difference from the Galaxy S3 I was using, but I wish I had held out a little longer for the SD 820 phones instead of buying in 2015.
It sounds like you've already got a pretty inclusive list for phones that are sold in the US and meet your requirements.
I just checked swappa, and if you're willing to go used, the OnePlus 3 is starting to get down towards the price point you're looking for. It has the same size battery as the MXP, and between the more efficient SoC than this godawful 808/810 generation and an FHD AMOLED I'd think you should get better screen on time out of it. It's a OnePlus so it has loads of good development, so you'll have all kinds of kernel/rom/tweaking available to really squeeze every erg out of it.

I'm not really interested... TBH, my experience with non-Nexus LG Android devices has been... well... lets just say less then wonderful.
Although I would have to say that the LG enV from years ago probably ranks up there as my favorite phone of all time, back when you could actually get DAYS of usage out of a cell phone on a single charge. I remember I would charge it twice a week. lol

Yea I agree. After my terrible experience with the buggy LG G4, I'm very skeptical about going back again. At the same time I am running out of companies to try out! Haha. Gotta circle back eventually, especially on Verizon.

NEVER AGAIN!!! I refuse to drop $140 plus taxes and fees (realistically $160) for the service level I get now for $72 per month. Plus the limitations on devices, I would have to buy at least one new phone and/or go under contract. Nope, not happening. (Can you tell I have a grudge against Verizon, lol)
I would look around swappa for a OnePlus 3 or 3t it's worth it no bugs lag free and monthly updates it's already on nougat 7.1.1 and the beta builds they offer are great as well and development is great lots of greats ROMs and kernels and unlocking bootloader will not void warranty
TBH...I think you will have a hard time meeting all of your requirements right now. The market looks pretty dismal which is very unfortunate. I personally will hold out a little longer. I'm really looking hard at what Nokia/HMD are coming up with and hoping their roadmap for US devices includes a mid range device soon. So far their line up seems decent and if they are true to their word about expedient updates for Android, and they will sell devices with unlockable bootloaders at decent prices, I'll be sold.

Like @acejavelin stated, Samsung is not an option, and I agree with him. Yes they have great hardware for the most part, but a less powerful processor running vanilla, our near vanilla Android will run just as well considering the lack of heavy handed UX. I will admit the phone looks great hardware and looks wise, but I personally don't like the look and feel of Samsung TW.

Sammie's are to bloated... Every Samsung devices we have ever had has been problematic... Hope you enjoy yours though but I would never spend that kind of money on a phone.
I have a moto g5 plus as well, its pretty good. It's fast and smooth. Screen and camera are good too, but obviously not as good as the X style.
Yes mxpe battery sucks. I have to charge 2-3 times a day and am not even a heavy user. I know its more than your actual budget but better wait, save a bit more and probably the price will drop also and go for a OP 3T.
i know your problem man.. but why don't you wait for a nougat update?? why not? maybe they might fix up the battery drain issue!
there are barely very less phones which have dual front facing speakers.. market has got very saturated.. all look for flagship but they just don't think that having a good speakers is also a part of flagship project!
as per my personal opinion... this phone is just the best phone ive ever used (till 2015) but in upcoming era you will see more and more features
i will recommend you to wait and not hurry up to get a phone...
if you need a pure stock surely get nexus but just wait for new nexus phone.. maybe they might consider it as a flagship and the value might be cheap??
anyways if you're just asking for all the requirements my opinion (AXON 7) not just only for dual front facing speakers but also for the processor(sd 820),storage(64gb,6gb ram) expandable ovbio (256gb)
plot twist: has hybrid sim XD
but im legit that it'll be upgraded to android 'O'
but it cost around $350
think man.. public reviews are also good
it meets all the requirements but is as costly as mxpe

Nougat can't "fix" our battery issue... Radio and display panel are hardware issues and that's where 75% of all battery drain is. It isn't even issues, it's just how much power they use normally. The SD808's radios are terribly inefficient, and the display panel uses more power than some small towns. If you think Nougat is going to noticably improve active use time, your kidding yourself.
To be honest, I might just pull my old Nexus 5 out if the drawer and switch to it... The battery life can't be much worse.
The sound aspect is less important. FF speakers are nice, but as long as I can hear a YouTube video in an average room and turn the ringer up enough u don't care.
I bought the MXPE as an upgrade to my G 2015 and it was on sale for under $250, and for the most part it is, I just didn't realize how bad the battery was, it is easily half of my G.
I got Axon 7 after X and can't be happier. I've had the A7 since August. Has the front speakers i wanted, nice beautiful Samsung screen. Battery is definitely better then X. Software was buggy at the beginning but they have improved it a lot. Axon 7 has been getting a lot of updates, doesn't mean it'll continue, we were the 1st ones to receive 7.0 with the exception of Google devices, and we are the only ones so far (afaik) to receive 7.1.1 with also the exception of Google devices.
It has its flaws but i love the phone. For the money you can't beat it. It's on sale now on newegg for $330.

LG V30: what are your thoughts

Well the previews looks to be a massive disappointment:
- non removable battery
- glass body (so sick of this I don't give a crap about slow wireless charging I cannot believe people can't be bothered to use a freaking cable) slow wireless charging isn't worth the fragile glass design.
- the second screen looks to be absent (unless it's cleverly blended into the primary screen)
I knew that the success of the g6 would ruin the v series uniqueness. What is everyone's thoughts of the leaks that have been released so far?
The only reason I've been with LG is because they have features other phones don't have and LG wasn't afraid to experiment. Now they've decided to be like every other phone so there isn't much reason to stick with LG anymore.
My next upgrade may very well be a mid range phone (after I feel like I am done with my v20 which won't be for years) in order to get a removable battery.
They've effectively killed any unique feature over the g series and they mind as well get rid of it if they're just going to carbon copy the features from the g6. With the g6+ featuring the quad DAC is there really even a reason for the v series to be around?
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Yes there is a reason. V20 was the first shipping with Android N and most likely they use the V30 to be firstest, again, with Android O. And I think it's the first LG phone shipping with the Snapdragon 835. And the first flagship with OLED screen. (There was an experiment phone , the Flex 2 which had P-OLED ) So the V30 will have a AMOLED most likely?
So yeah, many reasons.
Still not sure if the V30 can take such heavy drops as my V20, durability is one of its main advantages.
Gesendet von meinem LG-H990 mit Tapatalk
I was excited for a possible long-term replacement for my V20 with a slide-out second screen. Call it gimmicky or unessacary, I thought the Joan was promising, if only for it's ability to have the keyboard on the secondary display. Now the release has confirmed there won't be a removable battery (which I would have traded for, at a pinch, the slide-out display and some degree of ease of repair) - a nonsensical glass body and not even the ticker display the V20 has? Why would I buy this? It's basically a S8. Bad show LG. The G6 looks like it was trying to one-up the S8 before it's release, and it failed to do so. Looks like LG's trying the same thing with the V30 and the Note 8. Well they've lost my interest.
I am a huge fan of the V series from LG. If the V30 implements the full capabilities of the ESS DAC (native DSD playback rather then down converting it), I will make the T-Jump. The removal battery is very nice but QC 4.0 does offer some attractive benefits. https://www.qualcomm.com/news/onq/2...five-minutes-charging-five-hours-battery-life

- non removable battery
- glass body (so sick of this I don't give a crap about slow wireless charging I cannot believe people can't be bothered to use a freaking cable) slow wireless charging isn't worth the fragile glass design.

Agree 100%, a completely glass phone is a joke. Nothing more than another cash grab from the phone manufacturer's for you to break your phone easier. I always throw a thick OtterBox on my phone so I couldn't care less how "sexy" the phone looks.

The issue for me is smart phones are peaking the advancements are slowing down so the appeal of keeping a phone longer is more desireable.
The first component to fail assuming there isn't a defect in your hardware is the battery. The capacity is all but guaranteed to be reduced after two years. Allowing battery replacements allows for the phone to last longer without breaking the bank.
If you're lucky you can send your phone in and get a battery replacement from the company but it's inconvenient and companies love to charge 80 to 100 to get it replaced and even then there are no guarantees that your data or phone won't get lost plus not having a phone for a week or longer isn't acceptable when you need your phone for business and emergencies.
Second reason, most important to me, is the ability to use extended batteries. I currently use an extended battery that no matter what I do on my phone I don't have to charge it during the day I usually end up at 40 to 50 percent at the end of the day, no factory phone can compete.
QC4 sounds good but the nature of the beast is heat kills batteries; qc4 flows even more juice at a time the heat will be higher and thus will have a negative effect on battery longevity.
Further I feel with the ridiculous price hikes Samsung and Apple plan/are on doing (LG thankfully has remained competitive in this field thus far) this behavior is even more unacceptable, I will not pay over 1000 for a phone where battery life deteriorates after 2 years.
Only way I'll go non removable is if the capacity is high enough to not require 2 charges per day (mid day and night), so probably around 4200 to 4600 mah.
I am keeping my v20 for another year so I'll see what's offered then but sadly removable batteries are a dying breed thanks to greed. Midrange phones generally have removable batteries still and I may just have to do that to keep this vital feature.
The only phones that have interested me were the v series and Note series; note 8 looks to be the most expensive phone for no reason at all and the v30 looks to rid the two of the three best features of the phone (2nd screen, removable battery)

I think I'd keep V20 as long as possible, and V20 can be the last LG phone for me.
I loved the Note line, so what got me to leave it for the V20 was the removable battery and second display. I've really enjoyed everything about the v20, and I planned to buy the V30 and stick with LG. But, since LG decided to strip those desirable features from the V30, I see a Note 8 in my future

That's awesome, love every upgrade of QC adds something mind blowing.
Whike reason I bought this was for the removable battery, if not for that then I'd get note 8.
There's a reason I bought the V20. And that reason is the removable battery and SD Micro slot. Take those away and there's no reason for me to limit myself to LG.
OK, technically that's two reasons...
The V20 was a wake up call and the last phone I'll spend serious money on. The phone market is flooded with cheap gimmicks and even when a phone aims itself towards a real purpose (the best phone DAC on the market in this example) the shoddy plastic everything (not literally don't tell me it's made out of aluminum. I know I own one) quality makes it far more worth it to just get a DAP. I've had to replace the headphone jack twice and the micro mount is already starting to show symptoms of failure. Four months to fall apart. My Fiio E18 took a year of near daily use, plugged-in in jeans pockets, thrown into my car, etc etc, that microUSB port has taken a ****in beating... A YEAR before I had to replace any ports.
A stagnant technology competing for the money of a population that doesn't care about quality. I'm almost at the point of going back to landline because I don't get eat trash just because it's the only thing around.
Hope LG make the V series as it is, not going with G series direction. We'll see what V30 bring.
Without the removable battery I'd have to go with the (next) Pixel, Mi Max 2 (5300 non removable battery), Note 8 or the OnePlus 5- But... I just bought my V20 last week with 3 more batteries. I just upgraded my V10 to Nougat/rooted and my son is still rocking my old Note 3 (just ordered 3 new batteries). They all work great. With much of the evolution in flagships not necessary to get enormous improvements in enjoyment from these devices, as long as I can get and easily insert new batteries, we'll keep rockin'-on with these. We will wait for a new, removable battery phone. It will come. It will come...
V30? Boooooooo!
I think LG V30 will be a huge success. What I have observed so far is LG gives everything possible to V series. G series is mostly for experiment purpose. This time around we got even huge upgrade as compare to previous year. Snapdragon 835 processor, bigger screen and the best of all oled display. Eagerly waiting for V30 ??

Is the Note Edge still worth getting?

I am currently on an S7 Edge. I like it well enough for the most part. I miss having a phone running how I'd like it to run. And with having large hands, I have some trouble operating it sometimes. I've enjoyed edge features, and it seems like this would be wide enough. I would expect less performance and be ok with it, as long as it's not too much.
Thanks!
Battery life on the Note Edge is more or less terrible compared to todays flagships. I had trouble to make it last through the day with only a couple of hours of SOT. Even with a new genuine battery it got really hot and discharged quickly.
I don't really know which phone is better thaan this one, i tryed few on shops, but non of them sem to me more special than this one, i know the developers run away, but there is few good rooms and i em glad everyday use of it, i cleaned bloatware long a go, i don't use whatsup, twitter or facebook aps on it, instead use on web-browser to save battery for all day use on single charge.
First year it did warm up a bit in LP and did dry battery withing few hours, but with MM mickey room is fine even sumetimes i convert videos hours long with androvid, no warning up or drying battery that mach at all.
yes, the battery can be replaced, all the parts are available and replacement oled screens are made in china on demand, It's got IR, Head Phone Jack, NFC, expandable micro sd, heart rate, O2, UV meters. I've had mine since 2014, I've replaced the screen once, it's a tough phone, i can't remember how many times I've dropped it and thought f there goes the screen, and was surpised that it was perfectly fine. Ever since the Edge all phones haven't been so feature packed, Even if i was given the op to buy a new phone, I'd still buy the note edge.
buy a note edge ftw

That's definitely not true... Aftermarket battery stores stock the battery for the Note Edge and if the phone had issues as you say the battery shops themselves would not stock the battery due to customer complaints.
The first time i rooted my edge and changed the kernel and rom i noticed what ever i had done gave my note edge the exact battery symptoms you state. With the correct kernel and rom I've been able to get the battery to last for 36 hours.
With the Note Edges 4K OLED screen, Spen, latest roms, kernel and gapps ( from xda ) and a new aftermarket 3000mAh Li-ion battery ( go to a reputable battery store, do NOT buy genuine Samsung note edge batteries as they are new old stock), for about $200 you get a Samsung legacy phone which
stands toe to toe and surpasses todays flagships .
Also phones at that $200 price point are more than horrible, but then again with Samsungs current flagship priced at over $2000 is ridiculous, anyone paying that much for planned obselence wouldnt appreciate the Note Edge nor the docking cradle for charging both phone and spare battery. I'd rather rip the back off my note edge while people next to me at the airport look shocked and confused as I quickly swap out to a fully charged battery, while they have their flagshits hooked up to a spare battery power bank with cables connected to their wireless charging, gimmick.

Of course a over 5 years old phone cannot compare to todays flagships, do not fool anyone to buy this phone. Snapdragon 805 is slow compared to modern mid-range and even some low range mobile CPUs.
Last official Android version is 6. Custom ROMS does not support edge screen functions or S-pen features.
Okay, the screen is good, it is not 4K but QHD Super AMOLED.
For an example you can buy Galaxy A41, cheap but much better phone with official Android 10.

You mean this phone snapdragon 2.70.GHz x 4 is slow, well, not sure what you are talking about.
As for rooms, you have to chose the dedicated rooms for this phone one the Touchwiz, but the cyagenics are imported ones just to try and not for everyday use and sure they don't support spen, fingerprint and edge system.

I love this phone, I think I'll pass on the P7

As the title says, I think i'll be passing on the P7 and awaiting either the P7a (unlikely) or the P8.
The Pixel 5 just has everything I want in a "phone".
It's still fast enough that I don't get annoyed using it.
Read finger print.
Android 13 is running smoothly.
Battery life is probably better than on the P7, but no idea, but I'm still getting wonderful SOT.
Rear not made of glass.
Last phone of an era.
Completely agree! I jumped ship to Pixel 5 after a decade of exclusively buying Samsung Galaxy series. Perfect size and has more than enough power for my needs. If only they released another phone of the same size. If only.
Bought a Pixel 7 last week... currently thinking about returning it and keep my P5...
I'm in the market for a Pixel 5. For all the reasons @andybones outlined, plus as a backup. I got the 7 and like it more than 6. But now there's something new and ugly to be paranoid about with stories about shattering camera glass. Taking into account lame fingerprint readers, new Pixels seem to have lowest glass bidder written all over them.
I found a used "mint" condition P5 on Swappa.
I'll post about it once it arrives. "

I'll do the same when mine gets here. I'm looking at Swappa and ebay reburbished.
I've had a Pixel 5 for a couple days now. First thing I noticed is that SIM unlock happens instantly where as 6 and 7 have to think about it for a few seconds. Same with wi-fi and cell connections. It may not be significant but 5's radio is definitely snappier on start up and no waiting for status bar icons. I'm sure a new Tensor has a more complex job than an older Snapdragon, but simpler is what I'm going for.
The phone shipped with Android 12, I flashed 13, now I'm thinking about taking it all the way back to 11. Any caveats I need to know about that?

Nice review.
I've been using mine also for a few days.
It's great. Perfect condition.
Only thing is battery capacity I'm not sure where it's at. On my old 5 it was at like 90% and i was getting easily 8-10 hour SOT.
Im on my 3rd charge and I got about 6 hour SOT and accurately said 73% battery health. But I'm praying it just needs time but we'll see. This charge is doing a little better. I was used to getting an hour /10% battery..
But for $198 perfect condition P5 I'm quite happy. It should easily last me until the P8. Which I'm hoping will have a smaller close to P5 size.
I used the P7 in store for first time and yes it is awesome. But I would of bought new and it would be about $540. So I think I made a god choice. I'm also hoping google does good trade in deals again next year.. though I really do need a backup device.
Ohh man I rode A11 until A13 came out. Completely skipped A12. I used crDrood A11 ROM, and it was very stable.
I don't think I could go back though.
Besr of luck!

I read that Pixel 8 will be small. It would be nice if it also trended away from a glass back, but that's probably wishful thinking.
I don't have a clear picture of my P5's battery health either. So far it seems good enough, definitely not bad. I did a second charge today. Mine is in really nice shape too, so hopefully this means the battery had an easy life before I got it.
Good luck with yours too!

I'm totally with you on this. I was pondering whether to buy a P7 or not for absolutely ages, but gave in and bought a unopened sealed one for £400, played with it for about 3 hours in my house and could not work out what all the hype is about with the P7, I noticed very little difference between it and my P5, possibly the camera, but the camera on my P5 is perfect for what I use it for. And I totally love the physical size of my P5. I did like the phone to phone transfer using the cables, it transferred absolutely everything, including all my short cuts to various websites, Forums etc. They have not yet mastered keeping the same ringtones etc, but I was still impressed. Anyway, cut a long story short, I have now got the P7 out of my head, sold it for exactly what I paid for it and I am keeping my bullet proof 100% reliable P5 until possibly the P7a or P8, depending on size of phone, but if Google don't do a phone at 6.1" or less, I'll possibly have to switch over to Samsung.
I just ordered up a Pixel 7, free upgrade and my Pixel 5 is showing it's age. I'm not the easiest on my stuff and working on a diamond drill doesn't help my cause at all
P5 is the last good phone ever made.
If I were you, I'd get another one while you can still find it, in case you break it, loose it etc.
All the new phones are huge now, Pixel 5 is the smallest.
And cases are made of fragile glass on almost all phones now, on Pixel is aluminium and you can still wireless charge because of the hole in the middle!
And fingerprint sensor is actually usable on P5 because it's where it should be, not on the side/buttons, under the screen and other awkward places like on most phones.
And you get quite a lot of RAM that should make the phone last years.
Only down-side on P5 for me is the big screen resolution. I find anything above 720p a waste of battery life, because there is no visual difference for the eyes. But battery life is not that bad, if you only use it casually you can get 2-3 days of battery life
Just wondering, has anyone noticed issues with Android 13 compared to Android 11, on P5?
Usually I avoid updates like plague, I disable them completely and keep apps until they don't run anymore and force me to update them. What is annoying on P5 is that every few days it shows up a popup prompting me to update Android and it's only a matter of time until I click OK by mistake
@andybones, no reason to upgrade if you like the hardware/firmware you got and its fulfilling its mission. Constant firmware upgrades/updates aren't needed for Android 9 or higher in my opinion. Replace batteries as needed... easy living.

About battery replacement...
My previous phone was OnePlus 7 Pro, and OnePlus could replace battery under the warranty and free od charge during two year warranty for the device. I don't know how it is now after merge with Oppo.
How about Google? Battery replacement is done under the warranty just like it was with OnePlus or Google will charge some money? If so, do you know how much?

No, but probably not that bad. I run Samsung N10+'s and I doubt it's worse than them. Watch a tear down vid. I've gotten one of these done for $50, next one I'll probably do myself.
Regardless replace the battery when it drops to 80% of its original capacity. Just routine maintenance, no big fuss.
well I have a P7 on the way,
Cracked my P5 screen,
I'll probably take the $50 or so from Google and get the P7a once out and trade p7 or p7a in fir p8..
I'm still using my Pixel 2XL, thought about upgrading many times but the phone just keeps working.
Yesterday I saw ebay deal for Pixel 5 128GB for $110 and have ordered it, should be a decent ugrade I think, at least I'll try newest Android.
I'm completely with you guys. I love and live my P5. The P6 of my mom feels so bulky in comparison, more like a brick. I also don't get why there is no political or scientific pressure/argument for lighter phones <150 g instead of 200+ g. It has to be more healthy for our wrists.
In addition I had some experience with battery capacity and aging of it.
If you have root access or able to use some terminal executions (e.g. adb), you can read out your remaining full charge capacity of your Pixel.
These number will give you a scope of what's going on, but will not be accurate.
For my case, I use root to limit max charging state (at 75 %) and shut of below 20 %. Also I can limit the charging current by software. In all day usage I stay between 60 and 50 %, as I have a wireless charger on every desk at work and home.
So long story short. I was getting my battery replaced by Google in a case of warranty (I was getting a entirely new unit as replacement because I shuttered my camera glass/lense.
The bms of the battery counts charging cycles and remaining full charge capacity (see file /sys/class/power_supply/battery/uevent).
All I can say is that this number of remaining capacity (health state) is quite manipulative. Brand new capacity was 4100 mAh with 3 cycles. Now I have 3500 mAh after 218 cycles in 11 month's. If I would charge my P5 now several times to 100 % SOC and drain it to zero, the bms would learn and this count of 3531 mAh would climb again to much more then that.
For long term reasons I will not do several 100-0-100 SOC cycles for you. You all can imagine that it will hurt the lithium cells more than it will help to know the exact figure.
All in all I can ask a friend with a P5 which readouts he will get, he doesn't use this battery charging restrictions.
Btw, if your remaining capacity will drop below 80 % in warranty time, Google will replace your battery for free. Otherwise you can't initiate a changing of battery by yourself at Google, not even for some fees.
But if you really concerned, there are original batteries to order here in Germany, disassembly process is not that hard to do.
In my opinion don't take too much concerns about your battery. A friend of me has a OnePlus 6 since Release (close to 5 years ago) and charges every night to 100 % with a old Sony 7,5 W charger. He is on its original equipped battery and still has enough SOT for 1 day usage and criticises it's battery life some time ago. But as we know, there is no alternative to older, smaller smartphones without glass backside as our P5 oder OP6.

Edit: like I said, I did a single 100%-0%-100% cycle and the bms recognised this in better trained capacity. It jumped from 3531 to 3623 mAh (compare with table above).
So don't take this numbers too serious, as it it the same battery lithium cell and the numbers are all over the place.
Friends i heard pixel 5 has heating issues, how is it on newer versions of android and can we balance it with custom roms. I like compact phones and can't really find one these days in decent budget. I am planning to buy a P5 hoping custom rom support would last for few more years but little concerned about heating. Is it natural for P5 to heat or can we lower it with better roms?, ur response would help. Thanks dears.

I have this phone for over year now mostly running on custom ROMs (currently CrDroid v7.25, Android 11). A lot of games, YouTube, a ton of phone calls etc. and I haven't notice any issues with heating. Of course, phone is warmer during heavier games or something, as it should be, but nothing extreme.
