I found this post. I am trying to do this for someone else (I don't have the Inspire).
Can someone please confirm if this will also turn off 2G completely and only use 3G, and also if it works on stock rom?
The problem is the person I am helping lives on the edge where the 3G signal starts and 2G ends (so his phone switches from 2G to 3G and vice versa). He just wants to use 3G/H for obvious reasons.
Or if someone knows another way to do this. On my captivate rom I can switch from 2g only or 3G/H only through settings. If he has to install a custom rom that's fine (would prefer a froyo rom). If he does need a custom rom, please tell me which rom has this ability.
+1 Thanks to first working answer. TIA

Dialer - *#*#4636#*#* - Phone Info - Change to WCDMA only.
That does not work for me. Change it. It shows E then I exit the screen and 2 minutes or less later H+ shows right back up..

It does not stick. It will continue to do the same switching from 2G to 3G and vice versa.
It says WCDMA only which should be ONLY 3G - but nope, doesn't work with stock.
A lot of ROMs have this capability built in through the menu- not that crazy code.
I get why you're doing it, just make sure that the user knows how to switch back in case they travel outside the 3G area, or are on the edge (no pun intended), but could get a better signal from a 2G tower and actually need to make a call.

Moved to Q&A section.
Can we have a modded app that can switch between connection modes of the network (i.e 2G & 3G) and most importantly without disconnecting the ongoing connection.
when we are connected to a network and if we try to change it to any other mode then it asks to disconnect the ongoing connection. This requires a solution.
Thank you .

And, its the Network, not the phone's fault!

by this way you can use the 2G internet pack as 3G internet pack.which is i think is very gr8.
it is possible in other handsets like the Symbian ones. so can't android support it?

In 3G mode it never connects as it's a 2G plan.
the thing is by connecting it in 2G mode and after connection we can change the network to 3G.
possible on motorola charm. i've tested it
possible in phones frm almost all the manufacturers other than samsung.. dunno why.
so i was playing with my friends s2 which is on sprint and he has a 3g/4g toggle. is it possible to do this on ATT? is it possible to run sprint roms on the att version?
i would love to be able to move data to 3g/edge while i am not really using the phone and this can save me tons of battery.
if someone knows please help.
also, ive tried the manual mode but it doesnt let me select other options in network settings.
ag
Please do not even think about trying.to put a epic 4g touch rom on the skyrocket. Or anyother phones rom. Do not flash anything other then skyrocket. , and tmobile galaxy s2 roms on your phone or you will brick it. And no there is no toggle to turn off lte. You can edit the apn settings so it will not use lte. A quick search will explain how u can do that
Not sure about AT&T but the Rogers ROM has a fairly quick way to switch... In Settings-Wireless and Network-Mobile Networks, there is "Network Mode" which allows you to pick from GSM/HSPA/LTE (Auto mode), GSM/HSPA (Auto mode), GSM only, or HSPA only... I switch it to the GSM/HSPA (Auto mode) when I am not in Ottawa (no LTE in Deep River) and it saves a fair bit of battery.

GSM/HSPA/LTE (Auto)
GMS/HSPA (Auto)

Could be. I don't recall. I've seen it in others as well. Was surprised as I had already known ATT didn't have it in stock.
It is. Att base roms this is what you get
Type: *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer and hit the first one, there at the bottom u can turn off 4g Lte and 4g HSPA
Which setting do you use though to shut it off to 3G only on AT&T? The options aren't very descriptive. Some are obviously not used but I'm not sure which to try. Here's the options I get by putting in that *#*#4636#*#*:
WCDMA preferred
GSM only
WCDMA only
GSM auto (PRL)
CDMA auto(PRL)
CDMA only
EvDo only
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
Unknown
GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto [This is the one that is selected]
Also, it seems like it doesn't let me change it. I tried setting it to GSM only and when i came back to the screen it was still on the LTE Auto setting.
Yeah I'm confused what to choose to o

Ditto. I used the app "phoneinfo" which is just a short cut way of doing the #*#*4636*#*# thing, and when I change it, it always goes back to GSM/WCDMA/LTE.

3g or 4g, with no LTE would be stellar. It would get me more play time on Pandora and Tunein. I use Nav and Tunein, when I am on the road, and use a 1Mah charger, and it's a very slow and steady drain, I suspect when I am in and around home, St. Louis, I am running LTE and eating battery.
I suppose if I have to have LTE constantly, another option would be better pricing structure. Maybe 5gigs for 30 a month, or unlimited again.
The att radios are rat locked.
So no you can not change these settings.
Does anyone know if it is possible to get a "WCDMA/LTE Only" mode on the Nexus 5?
I basically want to stop the phone dropping to 2G. Recently LTE has been made available here and before that I used "WCDMA only" and it worked fine but that is no longer a viable option since I want to use LTE.
Thanks in advance

I do, but I can use 3G to do this. I mean I don't want it to drop to EDGE.
The reason is, in Ireland the network provider Three does not have a 2G network and roams to Vodafone when it 3G isn't available. It then will not automatically change back to 3G. You need to manually select the Three network again.
you have no option then. you have either lte only, which gets you data and no phone calls, or you have lte/gsm. on gsm/lte, itll switch to whatever is your best signal.
Wouldn't it be easier to choose the operator manually?

It still jumps to vodafone when there is poor signal, even when manually selected. If there was a way of forcing it to stay with one operator or disable roaming completely, then that would do but there doesn't seem to be an option.

Not on the Nexus 5, as far as I'm aware. I think it just disables data anyway. I need to be able to disable roaming completely or restrict to WCDMA and LTE.

When looking in SlimKat (admittedly not stock), it is @fergietime suggests, national data roaming and would still allow the phone to roam to another operator when there was no signal on the existing operator - just with no data. However, I am not seeing a problem with that. It only roams nationally when there is 0 signal for voice on your operator?

Yes, but it happens me quite often due to certain places that I pass through. My operator does not have a 2G network at all so roams once it drops below 3G. The main problem is, I need to manually search for networks and select my network to get it back to 3G/4G. It's a network issue that Three Ireland refuse to acknowledge. It has been happening for 4 years at least. I am just looking for a workaround.

I see.
I am also on Three (UK though) so also have no 2G coverage. and yes, when it fails over to 2G (Orange in UK) it is a pain to get it back.

It's a very frustrating issue. It actually NEVER jumps back to Three and it changes to Vodafone nearly every time I go inside a Tesco or somewhere like that. I then have to search and wait for it to find networks so I can select Three. The only time it seems to work correctly is when using a device bought from Three or a Three rom, which obviously for the Nexus 5 doesn't exist. And even then people complain about it so it's a bit hit and miss.
Does anyone know if it is possible to add a "WCDMA/LTE Only" mode into a rom?
Hi guys, this is my first post so please be easy on me. I have an unlocked Sprint Note5 that I use on Tmobile network right now. I added the 'fast. t-mobile.com' APN and have mobile network working. BUT ONLY 3G!! The fastest I've gotten so far is about 10 Mbps or so, and usually it's just 2-3 Mbps.
My question: is there a way for me to get LTE on this device with Tmobile? Or it's hardware/software impossible? For the simple reason of Samsung Pay, I'd rather not root my phone. The Samsung Pay has given A LOT promotions so far and I prefer to keep it.

I was in this same predicament. You have to choose LTE.
What worked for me was choosing LTE/CDMA mode from Network Mode and then when setting up the APN, there should be a section at the bottom that says 'Bearer'. Click that and choose LTE. After that LTE started working for me. You should also be able to switch to Automatic Network Mode after this.
so is the phone already unlock
OMG, it worked like magic!! Who would know to choose LTE/CDMA knowing that Tmobile uses GSM. Many many thanks!! All of sudden I'm getting ~50 Mbps v.s. the 2 Mbps 3G speed. This is NICE!

I bought the phone at full price at Best Buy and it took me a while fighting with Sprint to get it unlocked (I was with Sprint at the time even). According to their unlock policy posted online, the phone should be automatically unlocked already if bought at full price. They honored that but it just took forever and so many departments to get it done eventually. You'd have to be tenacious about it. I plan to do a factory reset with tmobile sim in to get rid of all the Sprint bloatware.

Hi everybody, also my first message here.
I got the same problem, but a little worse. I bought a SM N920P unlocked by mistake (from ebay) as I didn`t know that Sprint was CDMA. I live in Brazil and there`s only GSM carriers. It works here for voice and data but can only get 3G (up to 8mbps) while my other phone (moto e 4G) goes up to 30 mbps. And if I choose LTE/CDMA it goes offline .
And worse, it always trying to activate and receiving the message 'activation not completed'.
I wonder if I root it could it be turned from N920P into N920i or any other.... is it possible?

fix for all your issues.
This is the fix that worked for me but, you need to have your MSL code for the phone...everything works for me LTE MMS everything.

As far as to remove hands free activation..your phone needs to be rooted and follow this guide since this method worked for me.
youtube{dot}com/watch?v=-SEVcT9FJvw
You need to put it back to auto after you get lte to work. This allows it to switch between the two when you are making calls or online. If you keep it in lte/cdma, your gsm carrier will not wotk.
This worked for perfectly for me! Thanks foruonlyfrom007 for the advice to set it to automatic. Now i have LTE and can make calls with no issues! And by the way all you have to do is download package disabler from playstore to stop the activation, no root necessary

Yes I was able to get mms working perfectly simply by adding port 80 as the mms port.
My only problem now is that mms only works when I am not connected to wifi. If I receive any mms I have to disconnect from wifi and then tap it to receive it.
If anyone knows how to make mms work with wifi too, please comment and add @textbook.
