Switching Network App without Disconnecting - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can we have a modded app that can switch between connection modes of the network (i.e 2G & 3G) and most importantly without disconnecting the ongoing connection.
when we are connected to a network and if we try to change it to any other mode then it asks to disconnect the ongoing connection. This requires a solution.
Thank you .

Neither do I believe its possible. Anyways, why do you need it. I know its not good it gets disconnected, but...im curious
And, its the Network, not the phone's fault!

by this way you can use the 2G internet pack as 3G internet pack.which is i think is very gr8.
it is possible in other handsets like the Symbian ones. so can't android support it?

In 3G mode it never connects as it's a 2G plan.
the thing is by connecting it in 2G mode and after connection we can change the network to 3G.

possible on motorola charm. i've tested it

possible in phones frm almost all the manufacturers other than samsung.. dunno why.

[Q] How to use 3G/H only - no 2G?

I found this post. I am trying to do this for someone else (I don't have the Inspire).
Can someone please confirm if this will also turn off 2G completely and only use 3G, and also if it works on stock rom?
The problem is the person I am helping lives on the edge where the 3G signal starts and 2G ends (so his phone switches from 2G to 3G and vice versa). He just wants to use 3G/H for obvious reasons.
Or if someone knows another way to do this. On my captivate rom I can switch from 2g only or 3G/H only through settings. If he has to install a custom rom that's fine (would prefer a froyo rom). If he does need a custom rom, please tell me which rom has this ability.
+1 Thanks to first working answer. TIA

Dialer - *#*#4636#*#* - Phone Info - Change to WCDMA only.
That does not work for me. Change it. It shows E then I exit the screen and 2 minutes or less later H+ shows right back up..

It does not stick. It will continue to do the same switching from 2G to 3G and vice versa.
It says WCDMA only which should be ONLY 3G - but nope, doesn't work with stock.
A lot of ROMs have this capability built in through the menu- not that crazy code.
I get why you're doing it, just make sure that the user knows how to switch back in case they travel outside the 3G area, or are on the edge (no pun intended), but could get a better signal from a 2G tower and actually need to make a call.

[Q] Toggle between 2G and 3G

I wanted to toggle between 2g and 3g as my 3g plan is expensive. AT&T had blocked this feature. i tried through *#*#4636#*#* and also some other codes which is not successful. Can any1 help me in this regard.
Solution: Custom ROM
I am on Infused 2.x, and it allows me to switch to 2G networks.
I'm running CM7 and there is an option that allows you to use 2G networks only.
The stock Infuse software, if I remember correctly, only allowed you to use GSM only, which would use 3G.
As diablo stated, a custom ROM would be a good starting point.
If you didn't already know, 2G mode can cause interference with speakers, if that matters to you.

I cannot vouch for this. I am on 2G networks like about 90% of the time, and find no issues.
Can being the important word there
It happens on my phone. I have about 7 pairs of speakers on my desk at work, and using 2G causes all of them to give feedback while my phone transmits data, gets a call, or gets a text/MMS message. It's been like that, for multiple phones, for years. It's probably more important to note that these are older computers that I've kept running with magic, hope, and the occasional kick for the past few years, and the audio cards on them are likely very old too. I'm not an expert on a lot of things, and speaker technology is one of those things I'm not an expert on, but they are also older speakers and I can't say that if recent advances in this kind of hardware would have solved that.
Using 3G doesn't cause it. I don't have 4G in my area, and when my phone uses HSPA+ it obviously doesn't cause trouble either - (probably) being that as I understand it, HSPA is still 3G.
It's not a thorough troubleshooting but I started noticing my phone would do it when I started playing with which mobile network to use. It did not affect my truck's speakers, and it does not affect my speakers on my home computer or my headset.
YMMV.

Now it makes sense. I was assuming phone speaker, not desktop speakers.

Try with this code: *#2263#. Then choose GSM BAND and then GSM ALL or GSM 850.
Maybe someone of XDA Developers can develop a mod that allows adding a data network menu to stock rom to choose between 2G and 3G networks.

Droid's GSM/UMTS reception

Question for all people running Droids (Mini) on GSM networks. How is your reception? I have my Droid on my desk and the phone is saying 50% signal strength. My nokia next to it, on the same carrier is 100%. In my garage my nokia has a signal, my droid hasn't.
settings says UMTS = -90 dBm
Is this normal?

Europe... When I turn data ON, then the settings says GSM signal about 80%, but notice the icon on top right corner is still small. Screenshot attached.
Very sad about this. I am living in the middle of the capital city, all phones I have ever had had 100% signal here.
I´m having the same issue with my droid maxx in Sweden
My mini is suffering the same deal, one bar almost all the time here in Sacramento with aio.
Thanks a lot for your feedback. I have investigated a bit and found this. It was confusing for me that UMTS and GSM was switching during data access so try this:
settings > more > mobile networks > network mode - here I had GLOBAL, but I changed to LTE/GSM/UMTS. If you do that, new options will be available in mobile networks menu. Here:
select network > GSM only
Huray, 100% signal strength!
I have no deep knowledge of this, but it seems that the phone is by default in UMTS mode when it has crappy reception. This could be because of the design of the phone, or because this is a new technology and the carriers network sux in UMTS. My nokia has no UMTS capability and is in GSM mode, so thats probably the reason why it was OK and Droid was KO.
Only problem with this is that you will probably have slower data connection. But you can experiment with this and switch to UMTS any time.
It would be great if somebody with deeper knowledge of this participate. Who knows what the android icon shows and how the switching is done.

I have just inserted a nano SIM on my Droid Maxx and guess what.
The network is seen, but registration does not get through.
So, I tried another nano SIM (from another provider). The data works fine, but calls cannot be made.
So, is the Verizon phone locked to the carrier?
I am trying to use the phone outside India and the carrier bands is not an issue.
I see two local carriers right now, but the registration process takes forever and does not complete.
Any ideas?
it shouldn't be locked. Have you checked the settings I wrote about? I don't know what type of network you have in India. Or check your provider's bands, what type of network it has and check with your phone settings.
Many people on XDA proved that these phones work on GSM networks.
To all:check this:

WTF. I have tried this, I found a similar line but it doesn't help.

Well, I have looked at those settings. If I switch to anything other than Global mode, after a few seconds, I get a message that there is no network found or something like that. It prompts me to switch back to Global mode. Even if I cancel that and try selecting GSM or UMTS, there is no real difference. I don't see any network. With my earlier cut SIM, at least I was able to see the network.
My cut SIM is now with an adapter inside my normal phone where it works flawlessly. So there is nothing wrong with the nano SIM as well.
OK so I take back that my nokia hasn't 3G. It has and the signal is full. So it is the DROID!
I tried modifying build.prop with no results. Also entered the testmenu and the signal strength here is the same as in settings menu.
I am frustrated.

[Q] Any way to get WCDMA/LTE only mode?

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a "WCDMA/LTE Only" mode on the Nexus 5?
I basically want to stop the phone dropping to 2G. Recently LTE has been made available here and before that I used "WCDMA only" and it worked fine but that is no longer a viable option since I want to use LTE.
Thanks in advance
Can't you just switch off 2g dialing 3646?

I do, but I can use 3G to do this. I mean I don't want it to drop to EDGE.
The reason is, in Ireland the network provider Three does not have a 2G network and roams to Vodafone when it 3G isn't available. It then will not automatically change back to 3G. You need to manually select the Three network again.
you have no option then. you have either lte only, which gets you data and no phone calls, or you have lte/gsm. on gsm/lte, itll switch to whatever is your best signal.
Wouldn't it be easier to choose the operator manually?

It still jumps to vodafone when there is poor signal, even when manually selected. If there was a way of forcing it to stay with one operator or disable roaming completely, then that would do but there doesn't seem to be an option.

When looking in SlimKat (admittedly not stock), it is @fergietime suggests, national data roaming and would still allow the phone to roam to another operator when there was no signal on the existing operator - just with no data. However, I am not seeing a problem with that. It only roams nationally when there is 0 signal for voice on your operator?

Yes, but it happens me quite often due to certain places that I pass through. My operator does not have a 2G network at all so roams once it drops below 3G. The main problem is, I need to manually search for networks and select my network to get it back to 3G/4G. It's a network issue that Three Ireland refuse to acknowledge. It has been happening for 4 years at least. I am just looking for a workaround.

I am also on Three (UK though) so also have no 2G coverage. and yes, when it fails over to 2G (Orange in UK) it is a pain to get it back.

It's a very frustrating issue. It actually NEVER jumps back to Three and it changes to Vodafone nearly every time I go inside a Tesco or somewhere like that. I then have to search and wait for it to find networks so I can select Three. The only time it seems to work correctly is when using a device bought from Three or a Three rom, which obviously for the Nexus 5 doesn't exist. And even then people complain about it so it's a bit hit and miss.
Does anyone know if it is possible to add a "WCDMA/LTE Only" mode into a rom?
