Couple of questions/concerns:
1. HSDPA says it is running on MEdiaNet. I have a PDA Personal Unlimited Plan. Doesn't this conflict with what I'm paying for? And saying that they'll "never find out" isn't good for me. If I'm getting something other than what I pay for through questionable means I'd rather not do it. I don't mind tweaking, modding a phone that I purchased, but cheating AT&T is something else.
2. Is it possible that they one day discover that I'm runnning HSDPA and charge me for the extra data I've obtained?

You will be fine. For some reason there is a registry entry that forces the phone to use 3G instead of HSDPA (aka 3.5G). The custom ROMs out here just enables HSDPA. ATT does provide this on all of their other phones and you wont get charge for this. Why the mode was locked out in the stock ATT ROM...I'm not too sure.
Ok, it's just that it seems too deliberate like they didn't want people getting more for less.
If you have an unlimited plan, as long as you are not trying to run bittorent, you should be fine.
I have thought about this myself, I almost think ATT is disabling HSDPA on purpose to meet the battery life they claim. I have seen no test on 3g vs HDPA and battery drainage, but I would assume opening more channels for data drains the battery quicker. The other possibility is the endless hammering of the network by iPhone 3Gs, so to prevent too much going on they are handicapping the devices. The far out possibility is ATT trying to make some devices look worse than other in the eyes of the consumer, in order to sell more of the more expensive phones (in this case the Bold being most expensive). But there is no actual proof to any of this, so I am just speculating. Its very much possible that HTC is just slow to update their branded ROMs, which is ALWAYS the case.
Actually from the many articles I have read, ATT is stretching the network thin. The mass amount of iphone users on 3g has put a strain on data usage. In order to buy some time to upgrade some network areas ATT had crippled newer phones. I will bet we will see a new ATT rom in the next quarter that has HSDPA enabled by default. If I get some spare time I will dig up the articles and link them to this thread.
wow lots of conspiracies here.
1 MEdia Net is the name of the portal that connects your phone to the internet. PDA net unlimited and MEdiaNet unlimited are the plans that you pay for to get unlimited access. So when the phone says it's connected to MEdia Net (3G) it's just stating it's connected to the gateway via 3G speeds, its not telling you which plan you are using.
2 - The 3G icons - not speeds were disabled to probably solve lots of customer calls. Lots of people don't know that H is faster than U and that U and H are BOTH 3G (3.5G is still a 3G technology) Here is one example:
Purchased a Sony Ericson Xperia X1 yesturday. This is my first WM phone as well as my first unlocked phone. I upgraded from a Cingular branded Moto Razr V3i
Today I go into the AT&T store to have Personal PDA added to my service. For whatever reason it wouldn't let me add it over the web site. The Plan is added and the customer rep tries to configure the phone for 3G as it was only connecting via Edge. After some fiddling we get a "H" for the data icon. Two hours ago I did not know "H" is equal to or better than "3G" ( Now I know) In a case in of not knowing when to stop he and I decided to use to the procedure for the ATT branded HTC Fuze in an effort to get 3G.

So as you can see, if customers that are even semi tech are not satisfied with getting a "H" on their phone cuz they want "3G Speeds" can you imagine the 500 calls a day about why they aren't getting 3G on their phones and instead are getting H?
If you want to get technical, AT&T in most areas no longer runs a UMTS network and has upgraded to HSPA. Even the areas that are UMTS have HSDPA addon. So they could be advertising 3.5G but that would just confuse everyone and think their phones need to be upgraded somehow.

This is exactly whats going on, BUT the other major factor is that the iPhone is NOT capable of HSPA and only 3G. This means that they don't want the Fuze drawing any sales away from the iPhone. You will see another iPhone come out next year capable of HSPA after AT&T gets there HSPA software updates they are hyping up in 2009.
**There is another thread HERE that has a cab in it to fix this. You can also flash a new ROM. The cabs below came from this thread and credit goes to them. "advancednetwork" cab changes icons, "advancednoicons" keeps original icons.
No HSDPA only Edge
I have AT&T and got a new Unlocked Raphael (no not the Fuze) just a little while ago to upgrade from my old Tilt. I use to have a very fast HSDPA connection but now with my Raphael I can only get Edge network. I have of course done gone through the forums first and have the required HardSPL, I have also, flashed my own roms (tried several different ones) also tried different radios, the above settings cabs, as well as the different tutorials on the reg settings that need to be changed as well as of course using Advanced Config as well as gone into advanced networking and check the settings every time but still can't get HSDPA, and yes I did all the aforementioned with all the different roms I have tried as well as the different radios. I put my sim in my old Tilt and it works fine on HSDPA. If any1 can help will greatly appreciate.
Supposedly in the configuration files, HSDPA supported was disabled per request by AT&T... which is noted in via comments in the middle of the coding.
Newer roms have HSDPA unlocked so we're able to obtain faster data speeds.

The HTC Touch Pro doesn't come with the correct amplifier that could be used on the ATT 3G network so there is a no-go for you on this. I am suffering the same thing but I am glad I am not paying for it at all.
Cheers,

Thnx juluswang...That info should be in the wiki and/or a sticky and if it is I did not see it. Guess I will sell it but what model has both cameras and the ability to utilize 3G and HSDPA here in the States?
This isn't related to this thread, but I just downlaoded a 4.2MB cab file in literally 1.5 seconds tops. I clicked on the file and by the time Opera's download tab opened, the file was done with a green checkmark.
I am loving my HSDPA/HSUPA enabled ROM.
So, is there a cab that will activate HSDPA or give access to it on the Fuze?
Advanced Configurator will allow you to enable HSDPA and HSUPA on your Fuze w/o flashing to a new ROM, voiding your warranty and spending hours setting up your phone again (not that we don't all do that anyway).
Is there no registry edit that will do it? I've tried all the ROMs and don't like them.

Yes there is. I don't know what they are but the Advanced Configurator will set them for you.

I have always wondered this:
If I have a MediaMax unlimited package vs. PDA plan on my Fuze would that have any impact on speed? I get HSPDA connections here in Chicago uhbt I typically see 900k speeds, while I see others reporting 1.8. Am I capped because I use Media instead of PDA plan? I have on occasion reached 1.2 so I'm thinking no? 3G is spotty in Chicago. I work IN the ATT building and I get Edge. How lame is that.
I got a Droid 2 Global from Ebay with the latest rom installed on it. I got the sim unlock code from Verizon. Then I band unlocked it. Got a straight Talk Att Sim with service in it. It is rooted but stock otherwise. I get 3g in Philly just fine and thought everything was good. In Philly the signal was really low usually around 2-3 bars and it would bounce between HSPDA and 3g a lot but was fine speeds were decent 700-1200kbs and I could make calls fine. However....
The phone is actually for my sister to use out in central NJ. Looking at the ATT GoPhone map it should have great coverage but the phone can't make calls at all many times in central NJ. To make things worse the phone will loose all signal and ask her if she wants to change from GSM only to Global mode. A lot of times she will hit OK and then will have to remember to go in the settings and change it back to GSM (which she forgets to do a lot so even if she is getting an Att signal it won't work). She had a Tmobile flip phone and said that got much better reception.
Normal Att phones work fine in her area but signal isn't the strongest for most carriers there. So it is either the phone or Straight talk att service. I have read nothing but good things about Straight Talk att service around the web as far as signal goes can't find a bad signal mention. 3g Speed is usually slower than true Att but reception is usually noted to be the same. If it is Straight talk that is the issue I can just get her a prepaid Tmobile Sim and she should be fine on Edge with Opera Mini. She doesn't use the web a lot.
Or is the phone's GSM reception really bad and should I just get an Att phone. If so does the Droid 2 global get bad reception overseas too. That would really suck as the Droid 2 Global is an unbeatable bargain at 100$. I got the extended battery for it and it lasts 2 days of hard use... when it gets a signal.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter. I used the trick that supposedly boosts the GSM signal and the trick to change the plist file to get the missing bars back by changing a verizon key setting. But it didn't change anything, I think that was a "bug" verizon fixed with the latest version of Gingerbread on the phone. It would help a little if I could at least stop that screen from showing up asking if she would like to change from GSM to Global when she looses her signal. I looked on the web but folks said that couldn't be removed even if rooted. Any help or input would be appreciated. Most important thing for her is reliable voice not data. This is driving me nuts and I don't want to waste any more money on a lost cause.
Did you edit /system/build.prop and set ro.mot.phonemode.vzwglobalphone to 0? If yes it might just be AT&T's network.
I use my D2G in Japan and Russia and I have no issues with UMTS and HSPA.

Yes that is the build prop setting I changed. It didn't make any difference whatsoever. I think Verizon may have "fixed" it in the newest rom.

In case anyone takes a gander at this thread just like to say that the phone's GSM radios are slightly worse than others made actually for GSM. So if you live in an area with great reception you will never notice it. If you live in a place with iffy reception it may not connect at all.
I tested by running around with a new samsung dumbphone and could make calls in places where the unlocked Droid 2 Global couldn't swapping the Straight talk sim. Droid 2 would drop calls in central Jersey more than the dumbphone..
My D2G actually works better on GSM than my old Nokia 9300 and Motorola V547.
And I have yet to learn what a “dropped call” is.
Do note that I often find myself at least 30 km away from the nearest village here in the forest, and the cell towers are a few and far between. The D2G, though, keeps its 3G at at least 2 bars.

Also, if the user is (US) band-unlocked, doesn't that mean that he is using the older radio firmware (.330 at best)? GSM performance got better with the later releases, although many had no issues with the earlier versions.
Yeah, you're right. In my experience 2.4.x's radio firmware was a bit lacking in terms of stability on GSM.
So I moved to a new house which has basically no LTE and lower cellular coverage. My old house was a highrise with a literal t-mobile tower on the top, so I never even considered using wifi calling as my LTE coverage was perfect.
So here I am, with my Note 5, thinking I can rely on wifi calling in my new house. The house has excellent wifi coverage that can still achieve decent speeds even on the exterior. I use an Asus AC router that I've completely opened up to the world while troubleshooting the problem. Sitting in my living room (where my most recent call was dropped), I'm pulling down 74mbps and uploading 13mbps according to the speedtest app on the note 5.
My phone shows that it's connected to wifi and that Wifi calling is enabled. I've also changed it to "Wifi calling preferred" so it doesn't even attempt to use the limited cellular network that I can get in some rooms occasionally (depending on air density).
However, I basically miss all inbound calls, outbound calls only occasionally connect, and when I do have a successful call, it drops in and out as though I'm on an actual spotty cellular network.
I've tried Arter, SkyHigh and stock rooted kernels, all with the same results. I'm basically at my wit's end and getting ready to abandoned t-mobile. I read that exynos does not handle these handoffs and transitions as well as qualcom SOCs, but I'm reluctant to give up my great note 5 for a ****ty LG just to test this theory.
Can anyone provide some guidance or advice on how I can deal with this? I'm on the original jump plan + unlimited data and I really don't want to abandon t-mobile, but working voice is essential.

Not sure of a solution but I can tell you that I use Wifi calling all the time on the Note 5 and do not experience any of these issues.
We would need to know more details to help further.
Are you stock? If not, which rom?
When was the last time you wiped your phone?
Anyone else have Tmob in the home?
I understand your frustration but I dont think its Tmobile. Chances are its something with your internet connection or a software issue of the phone.

Thanks for the reply! Not stock, using Darthstalker V11 rom. Only person living here, but I do have a verizon iphone for work. I just moved here, and prior to moving, I had an enterprise level firewall in place, which meant I had to open up the right ports to allow for wifi calling. Since I've moved, I haven't even put it in place, so I'm just using an Asus router as a router & AP with no firewall functionality.
Phone was last wiped a couple of months ago when installing the latest version of Darthstalker. With each kernel I've tried, I've wiped the cache multiple times post-install.

I never had to actually rely on it, so I'm not sure. I used it here and there when visiting low-coverage areas, but now it's basically my only option. For reference, I moved from the DC area to a smaller town in Central VA that only recently received t-mobile LTE. That being said... in certain areas of my house I get enough t-mobile LTE to pull down 30Mbps, but the upload portion is incredibly asymmetric and only pushes about .1 mbps up... Given that I get decent LTE in some places in the house, but it drops off as soon as I turn the corner, I've configured wifi calling to prefer wifi over cellular, which leads to another odd thing....the phone basically needs to be rebooted once leaving a wifi calling network, as it'll never switch the LTE radio back unless I reboot. It'll just stay on 3g/edge otherwise.
As for my wifi coverage, I get great speeds when testing basically anywhere in the house, both upload and download. However, when I'm on a call that is clearly being routed through wifi, it'll start pinging me and warning that the call may be dropped in place where I'm still getting excellent wifi coverage.
Hey everyone,
Small annoyance however I, as many of you may also experience, have crap signal at work. I've found an app called 4G Switcher however I don't know if I should use this or if there is a better/more efficient way to go about this.
Do any of you guys have this problem and can recommend an app, or otherwise? I'm on 7.1.1 with root and TWRP.
(Also I am on AT&T - I think Verizon has way better service on my area, is there a way to "tap into" and use that signal? Pardon if that sounds dumb haha)
Not that I know of. I use an app called LTE switcher which toggles my data on/off and that helps sometimes. You can also try updating your profile and prl to see if that helps. But no, you cannot tap into Verizon from AT&T, they use different technology (GSM vs CDMA).
You can't update your PRL manually like in the 3G days, it's done automatically over LTE, also that's just for the roaming list. Verizon and AT&T both use LTE and the phone supports both AT&T and LTE networks, the reason you can't "tap into" it is because your carrier (AT&T) doesn't want to pay to allow you to roam on another network unless they specifically allow it because they don't have native coverage in that area.
As far as apps go, no app is going to improve your signal strength. The best it can do is refresh your connection, which is basically like toggling airplane mode.
I have the Sprint HTC U11, so am I stuck on only Sprint with this phone? The phone is currently rooted, with an unlocked bootloader. Can I pay it off, unlock it, flash another carrier radio/rom/etc and be on a better network, and fully functional using all frequency bands for that carrier? I read somewhere the hardware is the same for Sprint and Unlocked variants, has this been confirmed? I really hope there is a way to take this phone somewhere else, since the only carrier that offers it on installments is unfortunately Sprint. I initially tried to buy the thing through HTC.com using the PayPal finance option, but they did not approve me for whatever reason.
I have never had Sprint until the HTC U11 and if the U11 were offered via carrier installments on ANY other carrier, I still wouldn't have picked Sprint. I thought I knew what to expect from their so called "coverage" but wow was I mistaken. To call their service bad is a profound understatement. I have never hated a cellular carrier so much until now. Not only is their network coverage spotty, slow and ill, when the power goes out, so does the Sprint service, which leaves me completely helpless in a potential emergency situation.
Check out this thread here for SIM Unlock
https://forum.xda-developers.com/u11/how-to/sprint-sim-unlock-t3619042
Does the power go out a lot where you live? If the power outage is large scale and being close to a cell tower of course your coverage would be affected, that's no fault of Sprint. been a Sprint customer for over 20 years, but I guess living in the Tri-state area coverage is not an issue for me.
the Sprint U11 does have the same hardware, but you would need S-OFF (not available yet) to change CID/MID & flash another RUU or firmware, or you could do what schmeggy929 recommended & unlock SIM then use another carriers SIM for service.
Storms are frequent here, so yes. However Sprints tower is visible from my house and I get full signal. On Vzw, and Tmo I never had a great signal but when the power went out I'd still be able to use it even with a low signal. Sprint I can't even call 911 during power outages, the signal vanishes and I can't even roam to dial 911... If I sim unlock the phone will it get proper frequency bands for other carriers without flashing firmware and a rom, etc? I figured not having S-off would prevent me from using all the necessary bands, it's been a while since I had to do something like this... I hope we get S-off soon.
I have T-Mobile, they will buy you out of your contract with Sprint. I have brought over several family members from other carriers to T-Mobile and they love it. I would suggest calling T-Mobile and seeing what your options are. Once you unlock the SIM you can use with whatever carrier.
Sprint may not be too great in your area, but in my area I get great speed and coverage. My work phone is with Verizon, it is no better.
Sent from my unknown using XDA Labs
If it worked well enough to justify the price I'd keep it. After losing signal in and outdoors in more places than I could count, and after being in several areas where 5 bars of signal resulted in 56k dial up speeds I was irritated. But after talking to customer service yesterday, I'm done with them. 1% within Verizon or hell even Tmobile, it's an absolute lie. If Sprint won't even own up to their own problems with power outages causing service to vanish, then they're never going to improve. CS was rude and insulting repeatedly the last several times too, insisting that their coverage was supreme and I was somehow wrong.
