Thank you for that most helpful and enlightened answer. I would not be asking the question if I'd found the answer during an hour of searching. I have the most recent version of TWRP (3.2.3-0) freshly installed from the official website and I have this problem and I am unable to solve it regardless of how many times I reinstall the newest version, thanks.
Can anyone else provide some useful insight?
Device LeEco Pro 3 (zl1), Lineage-OS 16.0.
Thanks!

Apparently the 3.2.3-0 downloaded from the official website is NOT the most recent version. I downloaded the sources from the repo and built a version of TWRP for LeEco zl1 on my laptop. That version also identifies as 3.2.3-0, but it apparently is a bit more, because when I push it to my phone and install it, the error is GONE.
This is not the first time that building my own version of TWRP locally has fixed a problem.
Even with Newest version of TWRP i STiLL GET THE SAME ERROR

If you'll pardon the humor...
If you consider the universal balance theory, probably to counterbalance the number of dumbasses on XDA.

The following helped me out:
If you're upgrading from Oreo to Pie, the stock ROM (at least on OnePlus) has a file called "compatibility.zip" inside the zip of the stock ROM
If you have a mac or linux: Just do
Code:
zip -d [path to your stock ROM] "compatibility.zip"
for example
Code:
zip -d OnePlus5Oxygen_23_OTA_053_all_xx "compatibility.zip"
(don't forget the quotes)
If you have Windows, simply use MiExplorer to delete the file from the archive. Don't try unpacking/repacking the zip with native windows/mac.
Once you're done, boot into recovery, flash or sideload the stock ROM and the error should be resolved.

It's a good question. What "other system" are you referring to?
I'd love for the OpenKirin or TWRP guys to chime in. I've TRIED cross-compiling both the factory Berlin source and the OpenKirin Berlin source with gcc 4.9, and I keep running into errors. I'm trying to work through it myself as to not bother them, but if they have any recommendations and tips on how they are compiling from source, I'd love to hear more.
Here are some links that should help:

Hi.
Referring to firmware finder method... and I see that I cannot do the same procedure now that I am already on Nougat. My OS for sure has some corrupted files, but if I do again the firmware finder process (with MF file not the MF-PV), the operation stops.
That's why I need a TWRP ROM ready to flash...
Frankly speaking the samsung forums are much more "crowded" than here and solutions come out very quickly.
I was used to flash ROMs every week just to test or play with... Here is kinda desert....

Go to this link
http://hwmt.ru/oth/HWFF/info/view.php?find_model=
find the firmware version which worked on your device previously Download the zip package which has full as status .
Boot into twrp and make a clean flash of the zip.
Stock ROM Zip default has updater script so it can be flashed through TWRP.

You don't need to create. Full firmware packages are TWRP flashable, at least for Honor 8 which I personally tried and tested.
Sent from my Honor 8 using XDA Labs
Well, I will try again as you said.
But I read that MF-PV files are used to change from a previous OS version to the new one. (For example in this case from marshmallow to nougat).
Files with MF only should be used to update within the same OS number.
If I use that zip file, it doesn't work with TWRP on my phone.
I'm not trying the MF-PV because in theory it deletes data and everything....
Anyway, we'll see.
Thx.
Hey everyone,
i usually don't post questions but i've been on pretty much every forum the web has to offer and am still stuck so i'll try my luck here.
i'm currently running lineage 7.1 on my mi4c, i've used another phone for a while but now that my mi4c has a new battery i wanted to start using it again, is also decided this would be the time to update it to android oreo or pie, this however seems to be impossible.
i can only use twrp up to 3.1.1.1, all higher (and unofficial versions) will not boot via fastboot 'dtb not found' or when flashed via older twrp will freeze on boot screen.
whenever i try to install a new rom it tells me 'error code 7', when i remove the 'assert' lines in the update it gives me 'error code 6'
my device is unlocked, i have checked this in fastboot.
do i have to install miui again before installing another rom? do i have to go back to the standard recovery? i'm currently running out of ideas and hope you guys might be able to help me. maybe i'm overlooking something simple.
kind regards,
Monstreys
Hi! I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but I was about to start a similar thread.
I try to do exactly what you are doing. I want to install LineageOS 16, unofficial ROM.
For this you need a newer TWRP, like 3.2.3.0, but it doesn't work 'dtb not found' like you said. I found out that this doesn't work because you need to have nougat bootloader. Most probably you have lollipop bootloader like I have, and thats why newer versions of TWRP are not working. I think the only way to update your bootloader to a nougat one is to flash the latest MIUI ROM. But, unfortunately, when you do that the bootloader gets locked, and I can't unlock it via MiUnlock due to Error:20091 when I try to link the phone to the Mi account. In MiUnlock it gives me the "this account cannot unlock the phone" or something like that.
Now I removed the "assert" lines from my rom and flashed it without the error 7 or 6. Some error still apears, but it also apears when I flash LineageOS 14.1, and that version is working even with those 2 errors I can't remember during flash.
After I flashed LineageOS, I flashed gapps and then superSU, and now my mi4c is stuck on mi logo for about 20 minutes, and I think it will remain that way.
So, there are 2 things we need to solve. We need to find a way to install latest MIUI without relocking the bootloader because I can't unlock it via MiUnlock, or to find out why after I flashed LineageOS 16 it gets stuck on MI logo.
I think I found the solution. Do exactly what this guy is doing here and it might work.

My MI4C has been successfully flushed into lineage-17.1-20200220-UNOFFICIAL-libra.zip. It has been updated on TWRP 3.1.1 and keeps reporting error 7, and then abandoned TWRP3.1.1 and flashed into OrangeFox-R10.0-1-Stable-libra.zip After brushing libra-aqua_firmware_7.2.9.zip on this REC, you can flash lineage-17.1. I do n’t think it will be impossible to refresh because of partition problems. If you only need to upgrade lineage-17.1, you can refer to this method.:good::good:(Translation is not easy to use)

Hi,
I would like to know if anybody encountered this. This is my second time encountering this issue. I was on 12.0.4 and received a notification to perform update to 12.4.0. After downloading and rebooting, my twrp launched and after a few seconds instead of flashing, it went to the main menu page. After that, the phone just goes to fastboot mode and refused to boot. My phone has been rooted with magisk. Much appreciated for experts inputs.
The only way for me to boot my phone is to do a clean flash using mi flash tool and fallback to the old version...
Thank you.

V12.0.4.0.QJKMIXM is a android 10 stable rom and V12.2.4.0.RJKMIXM is a android 11 stable beta rom which has many bugs.
V12.2.4.0.RJKEUXM is a stable rom that you can flash with miflash(but EEA not global).

Yes i am able to successfully flashed twrp via fastboot afterward and directly proceed to root using magisk.
Everything works as usual, except, for me atleast, twrp now require pattern-type (3x3 dot) as password for decryption. Pin or character doesnt works.

To solve update problem you need to Rollback to stable stock rom, I used this:

then used mi flash from this toolkit:

Successfully updated to 12.2.4.0. However, my nova launcher has been 'uninstalled' after this upgrade and I am unable to reinstall it with install fail error coming up. I am installing from apk. Anybody has this issue?
Recently I decided to play around with my retired xiaomi 4c which I bought in 2016/2017.
Firstly, I unlocked my phone and installed TWRP recovery. (the version I installed is twrp-3.1.1-0-libra), the link I used is here: https://dl.twrp.me/libra, the reason why I did not install version 3.1.1-1 is that It won't load in recovery mode.
Secondly, I tried to install lineage 14.1, 15.1,16.1, 17.1 (none of them worked), It gave me this error
E3004 the packge is for device 4c,libra, this device is .
After searching on google, I deleted the first line (the assert statement) in META-INF\com\google\android\updater-script.
I guess it managed to be installed (no error pop out).
the log displayed while it is installing:
detected filesystem ext4 for /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system
packing system image unconditionally
However, when I click boot to system, it stuck on the mi logo.
I need some suggestions on how to make this work.
Thanks in advance!
Flash the latest available official miui (currently V10.1.1.0), via mi flash tools
Flash twrp or orangefox, via ADB. twrp official site has an old version, androidfilehost has a newer version TWRP-20190528-3.3.1.0-libra. orangefox official site has taken down libra files but sourceforge has OrangeFox -R10.0-1-Stable-libra.
Then try again
I experienced "this device is ." problem before.
From I read somewhere in XDA, sometimes a ROM may require certain recovery images to flash. So if the image is published with some recovery, you may want to try them together.
The last time I flashed my mi4c successfully, the LineageOS build and TWRP are both from this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-android-8-9-10-unofficial-lineageos-for-mi-4c-mi-4s.4008625/ .

What about battery life ?
I haven't noticed any abnormal consumption.
I don't have any apps working in the background, and I haven't installed Gapps.
But the phone is new, the battery is 5Ah, with normal use I get to the evening with 30-40%.
Perhaps it consumes a bit more than MurenaOS (formerly /e/OS, which I used for years on several Xiaomis, with great satisfaction for my privacy needs).
I don't care much about battery consumption, my goal is privacy, and there is some work to be done on this Lineage.
I hope some Murena expert will work on it, I don't have the skills to do so.
I accept indications on other "privacy-friendly roms" or settings for Lineage 19.1...

I also have problem with touch in recovery, Could it be solved with this ?
[Edit] - I used this link and tried to install the boot.img from this lineage os but i cannot seem to boot into the twrp after installing and the device is stuck at MI logo.
[Edit] - I fixed the MI logo issue by using the vendor boot.img
[Edit] - Tried again and the device is stuck at fastboot.

Could you give me precise instructions how to install the twrp in my device mine is 2201116SI. I keep either getting stuck at a bootloader or getting the touch not working in twrp error.

I confirm the answers you have already received.
I followed the directions in "Installing a custom recovery, and disabling encryption in the system," in this forum.
There you will find Twrp 3.6.2_12-0.
Rom is "lineage-19.1-20221003-UNOFFICIAL-veux-signed.zip" (1,170,242,002 bytes).
Now I don't remember where it came from, I think from this forum.
Try to look for it, if you don't find it we will see what to do.
I am a newbie, I don't know the forum rules.
I had also tried the directions of "TWRP 3.7.0_12 for VEUX/PEUX", but I had problems.

I am not sure, but I think yours is a different phone than mine (2201116SG).
Please check it carefully.
That would explain your problems.

Twrp 3.6.2_12-0 is not official, small difficulties are normal, I thank who developed it!
-------------------------------
I thought it seemed to freeze, instead it unlocked after a few minutes.
I spotted a little trick: press the power button on the phone and you can access recovery right away.
