I’m currently using AOKP Jellybean 4.1.2, the supposedly stable, reliable milestone version found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804223
I'll try to be as thorough as possible in hopes that someone will respond and know what to do. I apologize in advance for being long-winded.
I didn’t have any issues last night when I first flashed the rom. I was able to watch youtube videos using the mobile data. I was also able to turn on wifi to sync some files from my dropbox to my phone, and then turn off the wifi with no issues. However, today after connecting to a wifi network to download a few things and browse the web, I disconnected from the wireless network and the mobile data curiously did not start up again. I DO have cellular service (3-4 bars), and I can make phone calls and check my voicemail by pressing and holding 1 on the keypad, but my mobile data doesn’t work. I looked around for some solutions, and I've since restarted my device several times, tried toggling airplane mode on and off, and did several combinations of reboots with airplane on/off and no dice.
Everytime I use the toggle in the notificaton bar area to turn off wifi, my internet connection goes with it. It says “no internet connection” in the notification background at the bottom of the screen. Once I turn wifi on, I get my internet back and it says “at&t” at the bottom, but I don’t actually get mobile data because apps like “At&t Visual Voicemail” which require mobile data to function don’t work.
I tried flashing the 1.85 radio to see if it would connect to mobile data, and same issue persisted after reboot and dalvik/cache clean. After that failed, I flashed the 2.20 radio + RIL zip files seperately (which is what I understand came with the rom), and still no dice.
For reference, my HTC One X was rooted with 1.73 firmware (I never tried to update it until last night). I did the CID spoof method to unlock my bootloader, and installed the newest version of TWRP on it. I flashed the rom and the gapps package. I used TiBu to restore program settings and a handful of my out of market apps, and the rest of my purchased apps downloaded automatically from the market after connecting with my google account. I had literally just finished reinstalling the last of my apps today via wifi when this issue started to happen.
I'd really prefer a practical method of getting this fixed that doesn't involve starting over with a fresh rom install. Reflashing at this point would be something of a nuisance since I don’t have much free time to begin with. And hey, it took a long time to load up all of my apps just right
However, if there is no other fix that anyone is aware of, I guess I could reflash or in the worst case try a different rom. It’s a shame because the rom otherwise is really smooth and runs great on the phone, in addition to not using a whole lot of resources and having a decent battery life.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and solutions.
Here is an image of my battery drain screen showing what my mobile data is supposedly doing despite not being able to get a true data connection. Even with my wifi off, there is supposedly medium mobile signal.
And attached is another image of what happens when I turn my wifi off. I pulled the notification pane down and you can see that it says "no internet connection" at the bottom. Also, you can't really see it in that cap, but the mobile data bars behind the notification area are colored white, and there isn't any "H+", "4G", or "LTE" notifiers visible.
Edit: Attached a third image showing the "white" signal bars (i.e. no data connection). Yes, my mobile data is turned on, and I'm obviously not in airplane mode.
I figured it out eventually for anyone interested... Apparently the APN were not set. They existed on the APN list but were not visible due to a glitch in the ROM I guess. I had to add a custom APN and then the other ones suddenly appeared.
Thanks anyway.

Has anyone experienced any issues with missed calls (no notifications) or delayed text messages with their Nexus 5?
I've had the phone since 5 November and it seems when the phone goes into deep sleep the only notifications I can consistently get are ones that are data based (Gmail, email, hangout chat, etc.). At first I thought it only happened while I was on WiFi, but I tested this out by turning off WiFi and using only LTE and then only 3G, but the issue remained.
I've noticed with SMS and voicemails that once I unlock the screen and make a call or send a text I'll receive a deluge of notifications and messages at once, and I've been told that phone calls ring twice as if my phone is off but I never see any notification of a missed call unless there is a voicemail (again, like SMS, doesn't show up until I unlock and use my phone). It feels like the phone drops the connection with a cell tower while in deep sleep or something.
The short list of troubleshooting I've tried is turning off WiFi battery optimization, toggling between LTE to 3G only, and a factory reset. I haven't loaded the stock image from Google yet. I use Textra as my default messaging app, but the messages come in fine when I'm active on the device so I don't believe it's app related. Same goes for phone calls; everything is fine as long as the phone is relatively active.
I saw on the Google support forums that people have reported issues with the WiFi turning off when in deep sleep; at least they are unable to ping the device after a while so I wonder if could have something to do with battery saving optimizations in KitKat.
Anyone have similar issues, or ideas on what I could do to try to fix it?
---EDIT: 2013-12-09---
Here are some links to the Google Product Forum threads that this issue is being talked about.

The first one is the most recent thread, but I'd suggest that anyone that is experiencing the problem and comes across this XDA thread go post in both of the Google Forums to show Google how many are really having this issue. So far nobody from Google has acknowledged there being problem.
I have that same issue, also on TMO. It seems like the phone forgets it's connected to a cell network until you remind it. However, I noticed it first on my HTC one when I installed the stock 4.3 update.
I called TMO support and they reset my line or something. It *seemed* to fix the problem, but I'm not entirely sure because I got my N5 very shortly thereafter. I'm now experiencing the same issue on my N5.
Of particular note is that it always happens in the evening. Even if I toggle airplane mode around 6pm, by 8pm I'll have missed texts. I've just started periodically calling my voicemail to reestablish cell connection.

Airplane mode turns off everything and you will not receive anything until it is back on. Only wifi works.

Hmm, I'll give T-Mobile a call then and see what they have to say as well. I'm glad I'm not the only one, but it sure is a pain in the ass to have to micro-manage the actual phone aspect of a smartphone, heh.

I think he meant that he toggles Airplane mode on and off in order to try and re-establish the connection to the cell tower; not that he's expecting messages while Airplane mode is on.
Just to update anyone that comes across this thread, I flashed the stock 4.4 images and still have the delayed texts and missed calls after the phone goes into deep sleep. I currently have a conversation with a Google support tech, but I'm not encouraged by their suggestions at this point.
This just happened to me as well, I'm on Vodafone Romania. I only have the N5 since yesterday, and it's on 3G only, wifi always on. Wifi connects fine, today I actualy got an email from a friend who's been trying to call me unsuccesfuly for 1 hour. I just hope this is sw related, as the warranty is not valid in Romania

I just got my n5 yesterday.
I'm in Toronto, Canada on Fido network and twice in 24 hrs I have had the cell network not available, displaying message " emergency calls only."
If I restart the phone it will see the network a minute after it restarts.
What's up with that?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
I experienced this problem on every single android phone I've ever had. I dont think its a carrier problem. I think its a OS problem. I've used T-Mobile, AT&T, Straight Talk and Sprint. All of my phones have done it. HTC Evo, evo3d, galaxy s2 epic 4g touch, nexus4 and nexus5.
To me it seems like it happens more often with games. I may be playing a game of Navy Wars (a battleship game) or words with friends. I pick my phone up to do something and as soon as I turn it on I get a notification saying its my turn when actuality my opponent made their move a long time ago. Its also an issue with IM apps like hangouts and whatsapp.
happens on carrier data and wifi.
If anyone has a fix for it I'd love to know what it is.
I have exactly the same issue with my N5 sometimes i get massages 5 or 6 h after they sent. And some missed calls. It never happened to me on my N4 so i believe its phone issue.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. I do believe this is a software/OS problem as well, but I find it strange that I couldn't find more about it on Google's support forums or even more threads about it on XDA.
I wanted to update everybody and let them know that Google support put in an RMA for my phone in order to try to resolve the issue. I explained to the support tech that I tried resetting the phone to defaults and reloading the latest images that were posted (KRT16M) and could still produce the same issue without fail; I even took a video with my Galaxy Nexus and sent it to them.
And I gave up on being connected to WiFi all the time. Once I connect to WiFi and let the phone go idle all the issues begin, and then I'll have the problem on 3G/LTE when I turn off WiFi. Rebooting with WiFi off will get me back to normal, but this is obviously very inconvenient and putting a serious cramp in my monthly data usage.
I have absolutely 0 confidence that this is a hardware issue, but at this point I'll try anything so my fingers are crossed that the RMA/new device does the trick since it seems such a small percentage of people seem to be talking about this particular issue.
I'll post an update once I get the new phone and test.
I just wanted to chime in and say I've got the Nexus 5 on Tmo's $30 plan and I haven't experienced this at all. All my calls come through exactly as they should...maybe it is a hardware issue or even a Tmo issue.
I had this problem on Sprint. On one of the Sprint forums (S4GRU), I was told about a Sprint LTE issue. You can read more if you want, but net-net, the recommendation was to switch to 3g in areas where the LTE issue is occurring. Yes, it is a pain in the rear, but it seems to help me at least get the calls that I need. (data is available for me over wifi at this location).
Again, this is specific to Sprint, and only in some impacted areas.
(I did have Google send me a replacement phone - that didn't solve this issue)
There is 2 posts about the same issue on google forum
i can't post link i am to fresh on this forum
but google "Nexus 5 Hangouts SMS messages are delayed" 1st on top
and "Unreliable texting" 2nd
If this is the problem with software why it started like few days ago before everything worked fine
---------- Post added at 10:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:50 PM ----------
Another post on androidcentral
google "Google Nexus 5 - Missed Calls, Anyone Else?"
And i am with T-Mobile by the way
I have zero issues on my N5 with Tmo, texts and calls come through right away. I've had many Android phones and have never had any issues.
Are you guys running any apps like Greenify or anything that is preventing the radio from waking the phone properly>
Having the same issue on different carriers with the same OS where all that they have in common is a Google account, I can see one app having an ill effect on the basic phone functionality.
Sprint does have a known delay with incoming calls, it's a CDMA thing they enable on their end, but it usually only adds a couple of seconds delay.
It happens to me and when it does I realize that the phone is locked onto LTE, when a call comes in it is supposed to switch to 1x. The fall back switching on the phone's software is probably the issue on Sprint.
having the same issues. had to reinsert the sim card. tmobile.
I turned off wifi and restart the phone two days ago so far no problem just not using wifi. Hope google will fix it soon
Did any one report it to google already ??
I had an issue with sms not sending until I would reboot phone. I was only able to fix by getting a new sim card. No issues since.
For the people with issues, are you using a lte compatible sim card, and have you tried resetting the device and using it without any 3rd party apps installed (absolutely none)?

On certain ROMs, such as Cataclysm, my data signal goes away after disconnecting from the WiFi. But this has been happening on several other ROMs, too, and I can't seem to find the reason behind it. In case it matters, I'm using my phone on Sprint, data works fine with the stock ROM, and problem starting occurring more often after the 4.4.1 update. Any suggestions?

What you described looks similar to my problem.
I’ve been flashing 4.4 and then 4.4.1 ROMs on my Nexus 5 since I’ve got it early November, but I have not updated bootloader and radio up until yesterday. This week being on Slim 4.4.2 beta 1.5 I couldn’t connect to mobile data even though I had 4 bars and it was showing 3G or H (no LTE here yet, at least for me). GPS was fixing my location on Google maps, but navigation was not able to recalculate the route and was not moving my position along the way. Only when I switched from navigation to map, it was showing me as moving accordingly. Maps also couldn’t search for the address I was looking for. Now I realize it was a data connection problem.
So I thought it’s because I’m using 4.4.2 ROM on 4.4 bootloader and radio. Yesterday I downloaded Google 4.4.2 factory image and fastboot flashed all (efrant, your guide is irreplaceable!), formatted cache, did a factory reset and all. I wanted to have 100% factory state device. What a surprise today morning, when I realized I have no mobile data. Orange 4 bars signal with 3G or H. No internet though. Rebooted – the same: max signal, no internet. I turned Airplane mode on and off. Signal is back and I have internet, but bars still stay orange. So I rebooted. No internet on full 4 orange bars. Airplane mode switch on and off – mobile data regained, yet still orange.
When I reached the office I turned on WiFi. Got strong WiFi connection, bars went white, both WiFi bars and mobile bars (in Quick Settings). I switched off WiFi – mobile data is not reconnecting, staying orange, showing 3G or H. Sometimes it’s coming back after few seconds, sometimes it requires switching Airplane mode on and off to bring it back.
WTHell?
I was never putting much attention to mobile data because at home and in office I’m on WiFi, and while driving I’m listening to audiobooks so I don’t see what’s going on with mobile data. Sometimes I take a train, and then I’m browsing xda – I don’t recall having connection issues in train up until recently. But what I recall now, for some time, when coming back home and turning on WiFi, email notifications were popping up immediately. Does it mean I had no mobile data and phone synced only after it had WiFi?
This is annoying and driving me mad. Do I have to fastboot flash 4.4 factory image to see if it’s gone on 4.4?
Any ideas what can I check before going through factory img flash again?
Does your data eventually kick in after a few minutes, or are you without data for an extended time after disconnecting wifi? I know with Cataclysm if you enable Smart Radio it takes some time for data to ramp up after disconnecting wifi, although I'm not sure about how other ROMs handle this.
I'm on full stock 4.4.2 now, just roorted with SuperSU 1.80, no mods at all. I wanted to check if it is related to custom ROMs or general.
It's random, after switching WiFi off, mobile data sometimes comes back after minute (rarely) but more often I need to switch Airplane mode on and off to bring internet back, but even this does not work all the time.
Mobile toogle shows 4 bars with 3G or H in orange colour (screen attached) when there's no data or there is data. Never goes white for mobile data (I remember it used to). Now it becomes white only after I switch on WiFi (2nd screen attached).
Hopefully it's not this but I've been seeing more and more people starting to experience it. Mine started acting up slowly and then now it's having the issue in the thread linked below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525583
I've seen this thread, but my problem is different. I'm not getting the "emergency calls only" message. I can call or receive calls without problems. It's mobile data which can't reconect after switching off WiFi, even though mobile signal is strong - 4 bars and it's showing its on 3G or H. And Why it stays orange even after it finaly regains mobile data?
So I just got the phone a few days ago and I've started to notice some strange happenings. Whenever I get notifications for my apps or messages they always come at the same time. Say I have a text message come in, it will then push facebook or something like that and show messages that I have from the messenger app. Is this normal behavior?
@Demonlinx This has been happening since the first day for me too. I've noticed this only happens when I'm on WiFi, if I'm on data I get my push notifications the moment they happen (all except Google hangouts for some odd reason). I don't have the Facebook app installed but this is a constant annoyance I've been dealing with for a while now, it seems as if when the screen is off its not pulling in data when connected to WiFi, but as soon as I get a text message or turn the screen on my notifications come rushing in all at the same time. Are you on WiFi too when you notice this happening? Or is it all the time?
@elpindian Ok, so I noticed that this happens only when I'm on WiFi as well.. Although it seems intermittent because I've been getting other notifications via a wifi connection, i.e Twitter, Snapchat, etc.. So I'm not sure what is causing this issue. I'll keep trying to mess around with it and see what I come up with.. Are you stock? Do you have connection optimizer turned on? Mine is off. Tl;Dr I only notice this happening sometimes and it only happens (so far) on WiFi.
edit: I found that if I enable WiFi and Mobile Data at the same time it seems to eliminate this issue, I'm trying to test using just WiFi and seeing if the problem still exists.

Try a data reset by dialing ##72786#
@Demonlinx I am stock with no plans on rooting until there is a fully functional AOSP rom out there for our device. I have disabled connection optimizer as well, but haven't turned data off even while on WiFi. Is there a specific setting to do this besides the disabling data option? I never turn my data off since I have unlimited, does connecting to WiFi automatically turn off data? Because I know if I did turn it off I wouldn't be able to receive MMS and I definitely still get all my MMS with no problems.. Snapchat and twitter have delayed notifications when I'm on WiFi but work flawlessly when I'm only on data.
@Soooperstar thanks man but I've been told by a Sprint and Samsung rep before to try that and still I have these issues... Could it maybe be a problem on our router's end? I've noticed that this doesn't happen with every WiFi connection I have; i.e if I'm at my gfs house who has her at&t router vs my Comcast router.. I've also noticed that if my screen is off for more than a couple minutes while connected to WiFi my android wear watch will give me the offline message if I try and interact with it. It's as if the phone stops any internet connection while it's sleeping, somewhat annoying because I can't just walk around the house and expect to receive notifications on my wearable without waking up the phone (phone calls and texts excluded).

Could be..... Kinda hard to troubleshoot. The only one I have a problem with is Tapatalk and XDA app. I think that one may be related
@Soooperstar it's weird, I think it has something to do with the phones deep sleep issues and Sammy has yet to figure out all the bugs. I love the build of this phone but can't stand the software. I'm ready to move on to a Nexus device when the next one releases.
So recently I've been having a lot of issues with my cell reception. Randomly during the day I would completely lose my reception. However the icon in the status bar will show I got a full connection. Mobile data works. But I will be unable to receive / make calls or text messages. A reboot will fix this. I've had this issue ever since an ota update from sultanrom. I've since tried flashing the stock ROM back but it happens on there as well. I'm currently on the latest sultan mm version. But this used to happen on his lollipop version as well It mostly seems to happen when charging my phone. I've tried different firmwares and modems but the issue is still there. This is a big problem because I've gone for 10+ hours several times without any cell reception thinking all was fine because the status bar shows a full connection. Has anyone else had this issue? I really need to get this sorted as it makes my phone unable to do the most basic things a phone should be doing.
