Anyone else had issues performing factory resets? My Nexus 5 seems incapable of completing it. So far I have tried doing a factory reset from the settings menu 4 times. Every single time it locks up on the erasing step. I don't mean it takes a little longer. I have let it sit for almost half an hour and the little android robot sits there taunting me.
Every time I have had to manually go into the bootloader and sideload a factory image, which works fine.
Any ideas why this problem is occurring? Faulty memory maybe?
Same issue here, phone is getting nice and warm but the little robot just sits there twiddling his antennae. Forced restart either normally or into recovery mode lands me right back on the erasing screen, looks like nothings going to happen unless I intervene another way. Any ideas?
Try pushing the system.img using fastboot. Might be best to start over and do a clean install.
Have you tried doing a factory reset in recovery instead?

What is your recovery? Version # also? How did you root? <--- this goes to the rest of you guys too because it seems like its happening to more than one person.

ADB sideload: place the rom you want to flash in the fastboot folder and in the phones recovery select adb sideload, then on the pc in cmd type: adb sideload namerom.zip and it will start flashing.

but i finally found out that the stock recovery was somehow corrupted after factory reset
then I unlocked the bootloader and flashed TWRP recovery, and voila! my device booted normally

Exactly the same problem here. Nexus 5 running 4.4.2 kept powering off randomly roughly once a day. Attempted a factory reset and it got stuck at erasing. Having unlocked the bootloader and following the steps to unlock and reboot, I have a progress bar with the animated android icon, apparently stuck at the same stage, but without the "erasing" caption.
As far as I'm concerned, I can nothing with the phone at present short of taking it back, though they'll likely take issue with my attempts to rectify myself

I'll add that I've also tried the Nexus Root Toolkit v1.8.0 to flash stock. Appears to go fine, recreating the file system and loading software, then as soon as it gets to the "erasing cache" step it just sits there for hours and makes no progress.
I know I probably shouldn't promote toolkits but you can always try this. Seems to have worked for a lot of people.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. My N5 is rooted, running stock rom and recovery. I had some corrupted app date showing in Titanium that I could not remove that were causing a Play store issue for me. I backed up my phone with TB and ran a factory reset in settings. The phone was stuck on the 'erasing' screen for maybe 20 minutes, so I put the phone in fastboot and from there back into recovery. This took me back to the 'erasing' screen to my dismay. I put the phone down and started searching for a solution online, but then I noticed after about 7 minutes the erase process had finally finished on its own and the phone rebooted normally again.
Based on what others are saying in this thread it appears the factory reset process via settings or stock recovery can hang sometimes. If you power off, start the phone in fastboot and select recovery again, I'm guessing the factory reset process restarts and hopefully it will then work properly the next time, like it did for me.
Well when I did a factory reset from settings, it took nearly 20-25 minutes to finish. The next time I did a reset, it completed within 10 minutes
I guess this problem occurs randomly.
Be patient
My guess is that you just need to be patient -- my device took nearly 45 minutes to reset. It seems to me that the time required is proportional to either the amount of data or the number of files you have on the device. My device had a mix of large files (such as musics and photos) and many many small files (sensor data log files), so it's hard for me to say which of those contributed more to the long reset time.
Based on what others are saying in this thread it appears the factory reset process via settings or stock recovery can hang sometimes. If you power off, start the phone in fastboot and select recovery again, I'm guessing the factory reset process restarts and hopefully it will then work properly the next time, like it did for me.

This worked for me too. On the initial 'Return to factory defaults' it got stuck for about 45 minutes. I then follow the advice above:
- Put the N5 in Fastboot by pressing: Vol. Up + Vol. Down + Power
- Select: Recovery and press on Power to proceed
- Phone reboots, still into the 'Androidman' but it seems that the 'Return to factory defaults' also restarts.
- Wait about 10 minutes and the Phone powers down automatically. Upon startup you enter the 'Initial configuration menu' so the factory reset has been completed.
Still stuck on Erasing screen, running out of options

I am a newbie with zero developer knowledge and received my Nexus 5 in the mail yesterday. I liked the phone specs and that is the only reason I got it. I left it alone while it charged up and the first thing I did once it was finished was perform a Factory Reset (it was a "like new" phone so I just wanted to be safe) and have been stuck on the Erasing screen ever since. Pressing Vol- and Power button does take me to the bootloader screen, however, any option I choose by pushing the power button, such as Recovery Mode, sends me back to the Erasing screen. Pushing Vol+, Vol-, and Power shuts the phone off completely. Holding the Power button down does nothing more than restart the phone into the Erasing screen. I have also let the phone die twice and as soon as it has enough juice to come back on, it goes straight to the Erasing screen. Everything on the phone is stock and it is completely unrooted. The bootloader screen also indicates it is unlocked. I have attempted to flash it as per instructions I have found on here but I am unable to download the stock factory images. It gets to about 90% before the install fails and I have tried to install three times already. I do have the 15 Second ADB installed, however. I assumed the install of the factory images failed because I don't have WiFi and I'm running completely off of limited 3G data (I live in the middle of no where with no high speed internet to speak of). So in lieu of all that I have attempted, is there ANYTHING at all that can be done to get the phone off of this Erasing screen? Or do I just need to try and return it because it's useless at this point? I did at first let the process run but it's now been 24 hours stuck on this Erasing screen with no improvement. I'm fairly certain it runs KitKat 4.4.0.
Hello, I'm having some problems with my Nexus 5 LG-D820 32GB
Here is everything I did in order:
1 - Was using stock 4.4.4
2 - Tried to install OTA lollipop following this:
1) Install Minimal ADB and Fastboot.. This will allow you to run commands on your phone.
2) Install Android USB Drivers. This will add the proper driver to recognize your device.
3) Install Universal Android USB Driver. This will automatically add the driver when you go into recovery mode. It's a different driver than the one above.
4) Open Minimal ADB and Fastboot (your phone should be plugged into your USB now)
5) Make sure your phone is recognized (enter 'adb devices'. A long number plus the word "device" should show up).
6) enter "adb reboot bootloader"
7) Use the volume rockers on your phone until it says "recovery mode," then hit the power button.
8) When you get the android with the exclamation, hold power and tap volume up. Don't hold, just tap it.
9) Use the volume rocker to choose "apply update from adb."
10) Go back to the minimal adb and fastbook command prompt, and enter "adb sideload filename.zip". Filename should be the path and the name of the zip file. You can rename the zip file so it's easier to type in. You can also type in "adb sideload" then just drag and drop the zip file into the command prompt if you'd prefer.
11) It should now sideload. Once it finishes on your screen, it will go back to the bootloader and you should reset your system once it's finished.
12) Watch in anticipation as your apps get optimized.
13) Play with your phone.

3 - It apparently worked, no errors or anything. But, when the phone tried to boot, it got to the upgrading android screen, with the optimizing apps list (1 of 82), it kept freezing, crashing, showing graphical glitches, and rebooting.
4 - I went into recovery and did a full reset/wipe, thinking it might have been because of an app it was trying to optimize. It still did the same thing.
5 - I thought it might have been happening because I was trying to upgrade OTA instead of a clean full install, so I got the factory image from the google page and tried to flash it following this:

fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img

6 - Apparently it went ok, no errors or anything. But the same thing kept happening, it got to the optimizing app screen and would glitch up
7 - I got scared and tried to flash 4.4.4 back with the method in number 5. It worked, the phone was finally usable again. Thinking I had a way to always reset, I decided to keep trying to flash 5.0
8 - Tried again method number 5 with android 5.0, still glitched at optimizing apps
9 - Tried using Nexus Root Toolkit v1.9.4 to flash android 5.0, no apparent error, but got the same results at the optimizing apps screen
10 - Tried using Nexus Root Toolkit v1.9.4 to flash back to 4.4.4, and this time it froze at the twirling balls loading screen
11 - Tried using the method in number 5 to flash back to 4.4.4, and this time it froze at the twirling balls loading screen
12 - ??? I don't know what to do now. I was thinking of trying to flash 4.4.3 using the method in number 5 to see what happens >_>
Any help is appreciated, does anyone know why it kept freezing and showing graphical glitches at the optimizing app screen? Am I doing something wrong? The thing that bugs me is that every attempt went nicely, it isn't like I couldn't flash the images. I did flash them with no apparent error but they didn't work..

Are you seeing the same boot animation after trying to flash 4.4.4 & 5.0?
Since you used fastboot to flash the factory images, it should have worked. Only thing I can think of is your eMMC died.
This happened to me once on my old Galaxy Nexus. Basically no matter what ROM I would try to flash it would boot to Paranoid Android. Even after flashing factory images with fastboot (encountering no errors) I'd be greeted with the old JellyBean PA boot animation. Never got any errors, but nothing actually worked.
That's why I asked if you're seeing the different boot animation between KK & LP. To me it kind of sounds like your eMMC fried.

The animation is different, twirling pseudo 3D balls for 5.0 and 4 2D balls meeting in the centre for 4.4.4
And every time it stops at a different point. Right after I flash is when it goes the furthest, and then it goes less and less each subsequent boot
I really don't know I think I'll try flashing using the LG Flashtool to see if anything changes
It didn't work... I'm basically out of ideas
Guess I'll try the same things I've already done but with another computer, in the off chance the pc was corrupting something

I went back to 4.4.4 through the toolkit and again received the OTA. This time the OTA installed without issue, and I was able to actually get the phone set up, but it kept having graphical glitches, would freeze and requiring a reboot. Went back to 4.4.4 and then followed the procedures on the Google factory images page and installed the update without issue. Again, it won't get through the initial setup without the graphics issues and freezing. I wiped the cache, did a factory reset, and installed the factory image again, with no change. 4.4.4 is working without an issue. I have a friend that is also experiencing similar issues. I'm out of ideas how to get the update to work.

At least you can revert to 4.4.4, mine freezes on the balls/once it did on the initial screen
Using another PC just made things worse, it froze while writing the system image and now the usb recognition is flimsy, sometimes it says the pc can't recognize the device when plugged in and sometimes it works, but now I can't flash things anymore
Welp. It's a less than a month old phone too, and I really think it's gone
Mine has froze a couple of times at that screen as well. I was able to force it into recovery mode with the power and volume down buttons and I was able to use the soft brick function in the toolkit to get it back to 4.4.4.

Well I was able to flash 4.4.4 again ( I guess it's really hard to get it completely bricked, always when I thought it was gone it was able to get to fastboot mode)
But it still freezes on the balls / starter config screens
I'm at a loss as to how to fix this and I'm not seeing much online about others having this issue.

Yes, most problems are people receiving errors/not being able to complete flashing the images. What's crazy about this is that we follow the correct procedure, get no errors or anything, but it doesn't work
I'm still unable to boot. Will try contacting Google soon.
I still have been unsuccessful as well. I'm getting a replacement phone from Google. Should have it next week.

I need help in recovering a two year old Nexus 4 to usable state.
It went into a loop while in use. Background and symptoms are as follows:
1. OS was OTA updated to Lollipop and was used for several days before problem occured.
2. Now, on powering on, the device remains indefinitely (checked for 30-40 minutes) in the loop displaying 4 coloured shapes going in circles.
3. At first, I tried factory reset, but that failed showing errors like failure to mount /cache etc.
4. Device can be put in fastboot mode (showing product, variant etc.), but always with "locked" state.
5. I used Nexus root toolkit 2.0.4 for attempting recovery. The device is detected in fastboot mode.
6. I tried to unlock bootloader. But it fails to unlock. After selecting unlock option with volume-up and pushing power button, device seems to unlock, but it then boots into the loop similar to the one after power-on. Powering off and putting the device in fastboot mode shows the device state as "locked" again.
7. "Flash stock + unroot" with "soft-bricked/bootloop" option attempts to write to the device but fails at every step with the reason: FAILED (remote: not supported in locked device). This happens 7 times during flash and once during postflash boot. I repeated the exercise with "force-flash mode" and "post-flash factory reset" checked as well, with same failure messages.
8. FYI: I have downloaded the factory image "occam-lrx22c-factory-86c04af6.tgz". It is verified by NRT as OK.
Based on this, I feel that unless the device can be "unlocked", writing to it and recovering it will be difficult.
Can anyone suggest a different set of steps / different recovery program, which may help?
I have read similar threads on this forum, but could not get a complete set of "instructions + working links to tools" from those threads.

So here it how it goes:
My N5 freezes suddenly and shortly after it goes into a bootloop ( stuck at Google logo ). And from there on, the only thing I can do is just go into the bootloader.
If I go to recovery mode I can see that I get "msm_sdcc.1/by-name/misc no such directory" or something like that.
The only thing that helps make this issue dissapear is performing an oem unlock in fastboot mode, but this is not a good solution since this is the 2nd time it has happened to me in the past 3 months.
What do you guys suggest I should check/do to prevent this issue from ever happening?

Does the bootloader relock itself at reboot? If it does, the emmc chip is going or gone.

The bootloader doesn't relock itself. It remains unlocked even after reboot.
I just unlock it to perform this "trick" that helps me get out of the bootloop. ( also after unlocking it, I perform a fastboot oem lock, done this both times ).
Also, don't know if it is related, when i go into recovery mode i get the android with an X or an ! (forgot which one) which is most probably due to files missing.
The screen with the dead android is normal. No need to relock the bootloader in my opinion.
Have your tried flashing a completely stock rom, including th userdata.img file to see if that solves the issue?
@audit13 Wanted to keep the stock rom with which it had come. Also doesn't an update ( from L to M for example) change the rom completely?
An ota update will move the phone to the latest of the current version (e.g. 5.0 to 5.01). The the ota will move from LP to mm.
Personally, I prefer mm.
So.. The phone did it again today, same behavior, same result ( bootloop out of nowhere ). This time I performed a complete new install of the OS ( wipe cache, factory reset + reflashed a factory image).
At this moment the phone is working as usual and now I will wait and see if the issue reoccurs (hope not).
If someone else has any other ideas an how to prevent or read some logs from the phone ( even if I performed an oem unlock ) please reply.

I been using my OnePlus One phone for a long time with no problems until now, when I tried to update to the latest LineageOS.
During the process I did, by mistake I wiped all the data in the phone thinking I was formatting but ended up also deleting the OS.
Currently my phone is in a a FastBoot Loop with nothing else.
Can't access anything.
This is the 2nd time it happened to me and I fixed it the first time.
That happened like 2-3 years ago and I don't have the means to do it again.
I have been searching for a solution around the internet for the last 2-3 days but with no success.
Most "solutions" I have found have missing steps (due to broken links or old apps, etc...)
ALL IN ALL
1. FastBoot Loop
(Now even with a new problem that every time I reboot it even goes into "Low Battery / FastBoot Loop" even though my battery is probably full)
2. OEM Not Unlocked
(Even though the ADB "fastboot oem unlock" command completes successfully in the end it does not unlock it)
3. No OS
(Can't access anything else, not sideload, not recovery, not system, not bootloader)
Would love if anyone could help me with this one.

No. Even the phone has no OS it's still said low battery when your phone's battery it's too low
