Anyone else had issues performing factory resets? My Nexus 5 seems incapable of completing it. So far I have tried doing a factory reset from the settings menu 4 times. Every single time it locks up on the erasing step. I don't mean it takes a little longer. I have let it sit for almost half an hour and the little android robot sits there taunting me.
Every time I have had to manually go into the bootloader and sideload a factory image, which works fine.
Any ideas why this problem is occurring? Faulty memory maybe?
Same issue here, phone is getting nice and warm but the little robot just sits there twiddling his antennae. Forced restart either normally or into recovery mode lands me right back on the erasing screen, looks like nothings going to happen unless I intervene another way. Any ideas?
Try pushing the system.img using fastboot. Might be best to start over and do a clean install.
Have you tried doing a factory reset in recovery instead?

I have the same problem with the loop at the erasing screen. It will not go into recovery so that I can fix it. I tried flashing the Stock Rom again but no use. Please help me or at least give me some pointers what to try next.

What is your recovery? Version # also? How did you root? <--- this goes to the rest of you guys too because it seems like its happening to more than one person.

I have tried flashing factory image according to this guide, succeeded, but then still stucked in android logo with endless progress bar (but this time without "erasing....")

ADB sideload: place the rom you want to flash in the fastboot folder and in the phones recovery select adb sideload, then on the pc in cmd type: adb sideload namerom.zip and it will start flashing.

but i finally found out that the stock recovery was somehow corrupted after factory reset
then I unlocked the bootloader and flashed TWRP recovery, and voila! my device booted normally

Exactly the same problem here. Nexus 5 running 4.4.2 kept powering off randomly roughly once a day. Attempted a factory reset and it got stuck at erasing. Having unlocked the bootloader and following the steps to unlock and reboot, I have a progress bar with the animated android icon, apparently stuck at the same stage, but without the "erasing" caption.
As far as I'm concerned, I can nothing with the phone at present short of taking it back, though they'll likely take issue with my attempts to rectify myself

I'll add that I've also tried the Nexus Root Toolkit v1.8.0 to flash stock. Appears to go fine, recreating the file system and loading software, then as soon as it gets to the "erasing cache" step it just sits there for hours and makes no progress.
I know I probably shouldn't promote toolkits but you can always try this. Seems to have worked for a lot of people.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. My N5 is rooted, running stock rom and recovery. I had some corrupted app date showing in Titanium that I could not remove that were causing a Play store issue for me. I backed up my phone with TB and ran a factory reset in settings. The phone was stuck on the 'erasing' screen for maybe 20 minutes, so I put the phone in fastboot and from there back into recovery. This took me back to the 'erasing' screen to my dismay. I put the phone down and started searching for a solution online, but then I noticed after about 7 minutes the erase process had finally finished on its own and the phone rebooted normally again.
Based on what others are saying in this thread it appears the factory reset process via settings or stock recovery can hang sometimes. If you power off, start the phone in fastboot and select recovery again, I'm guessing the factory reset process restarts and hopefully it will then work properly the next time, like it did for me.
Well when I did a factory reset from settings, it took nearly 20-25 minutes to finish. The next time I did a reset, it completed within 10 minutes
I guess this problem occurs randomly.
Be patient
My guess is that you just need to be patient -- my device took nearly 45 minutes to reset. It seems to me that the time required is proportional to either the amount of data or the number of files you have on the device. My device had a mix of large files (such as musics and photos) and many many small files (sensor data log files), so it's hard for me to say which of those contributed more to the long reset time.
Based on what others are saying in this thread it appears the factory reset process via settings or stock recovery can hang sometimes. If you power off, start the phone in fastboot and select recovery again, I'm guessing the factory reset process restarts and hopefully it will then work properly the next time, like it did for me.

This worked for me too. On the initial 'Return to factory defaults' it got stuck for about 45 minutes. I then follow the advice above:
- Put the N5 in Fastboot by pressing: Vol. Up + Vol. Down + Power
- Select: Recovery and press on Power to proceed
- Phone reboots, still into the 'Androidman' but it seems that the 'Return to factory defaults' also restarts.
- Wait about 10 minutes and the Phone powers down automatically. Upon startup you enter the 'Initial configuration menu' so the factory reset has been completed.
Still stuck on Erasing screen, running out of options

I am a newbie with zero developer knowledge and received my Nexus 5 in the mail yesterday. I liked the phone specs and that is the only reason I got it. I left it alone while it charged up and the first thing I did once it was finished was perform a Factory Reset (it was a "like new" phone so I just wanted to be safe) and have been stuck on the Erasing screen ever since. Pressing Vol- and Power button does take me to the bootloader screen, however, any option I choose by pushing the power button, such as Recovery Mode, sends me back to the Erasing screen. Pushing Vol+, Vol-, and Power shuts the phone off completely. Holding the Power button down does nothing more than restart the phone into the Erasing screen. I have also let the phone die twice and as soon as it has enough juice to come back on, it goes straight to the Erasing screen. Everything on the phone is stock and it is completely unrooted. The bootloader screen also indicates it is unlocked. I have attempted to flash it as per instructions I have found on here but I am unable to download the stock factory images. It gets to about 90% before the install fails and I have tried to install three times already. I do have the 15 Second ADB installed, however. I assumed the install of the factory images failed because I don't have WiFi and I'm running completely off of limited 3G data (I live in the middle of no where with no high speed internet to speak of). So in lieu of all that I have attempted, is there ANYTHING at all that can be done to get the phone off of this Erasing screen? Or do I just need to try and return it because it's useless at this point? I did at first let the process run but it's now been 24 hours stuck on this Erasing screen with no improvement. I'm fairly certain it runs KitKat 4.4.0.

I was running CM 0701 nightly fine and decided to boot to CWM-based recovery and flash latest nightly from 0703. It got about 2/3 the way through updating apps after boot and froze. Then screen stayed black, but would backlight. Was unresponsive to touch, but I could get it to take screenshots (at least I could hear the sound made by triggering one). I longpressed the power button to force reboot and entered bootloader. Finally I could see the screen again. I thought all was better and it just needed a reboot so I reboot again and let it boot. Still no screen. So I longpressed to reboot, got into bootloader, then revovery... and tryed to reflash nightly from 0701 but it won't access my "/sdcard" because it won't mount. Same error ("Error mounting /data!) when I try to fatory reset or mount/unmount.
WTH?!
Anybody have any ideas what broke this? What it a change in last two nightlies? A change to the recovery?

Thanks @rootSU. Ultimately and unexpectedly the phone came back to life before I could get to a computer with adb access. I had tried rebooting several times before, but magically after about 6 hours of downtime (no charge or anything) it rebooted up fine. It was a little shaky and slow at first, and ran the update apps process again on the next boot but has since be stable. No flashing. A couple reboots. All fine.
Thanks to the XDA community for existing and providing such a reassuring resource for knowledge and problem solving!
- A few days ago my phone freezes while I am using it, and its stuck on the google screen. at this point, it's on 5.0.1 unrooted, unlocked bootloader.
- I try going into recovery and wiping cache and doing factory reset. I keep getting errors but eventually the wipes work. Still doesn't boot though. So I do this a few times. I got it to boot twice but both times it froze within 5 mins and back to the same thing.
- I fastboot 5.0.1 factory image, goes through. but still no dice - stuck on google boot screen.
- I research and find out about the infamous power button problem. it doesn't seem like thats the issue with mine because the buttons seem to work fine. whatever, i take it to a local repair shop (phone is out of warranty) and the next day they inform me that there is no physical issue and that their software reset worked. they used the LG factory firmware way of resetting the device.
- Got the device back, used it for a while. It was fine for the time being but it was on 4.4.3 and I got the 4.4.4 update. I go and unlock bootloader, flash 5.0.1 factory image and push TWRP+root.
- Doesn't boot again, stuck on google logo
- I tried a whole bunch of stuff and nothing worked. I ended up with flashing 4.4.3 factory image in fastboot and relocking the bootloader so I could take it back to the shop the next day. At this point the phone wasn't even turning on.
- The next day (today), I tried turning it on, nothing. I put it in the charger for a while, then turned it on.... and it booted! used it for a while, it's fine.
- Did 4.4.4 system update, it's fine.
- Unlocked bootloader, it's fine.

1.I presume the "DemiGod Watchdog HW reset" green screen came up after you gave the phone for HW servicing? If so then they could have knocked around the parts a bit to cause a hardware issue(not sure what causes it)
2.Check the MD5 of the 5.0.1 factory image.
3.Instead of factory image use the OTA zip file and flash in stock recovery.
So I used the LG tool myself to flash the firmware (4.4.3 is the only one available) and it worked fine. Updated to 4.4.4. Fine.
I then adb sideload the 4.4.4 - 5.0.1, and stuck on google logo again .................im pulling my hair out this is so weird.

1) yes this was after.
2)i tried adb sideload.. ill try that good idea.
can't flash ota.zip in recovery. only adb and that didn't work.
think i'm just gonna hang on to 4.4.4 then for now. tried everything.
Just an update. I was running 4.4.4 just fine but the phone froze and went back to the Google screen again.

well, to be honnest I already posted my story in the help thread but no answer came so I try with a new thread

a few weeks ago I broke my screen and decided to change it myself.
Everything went fine (even restarted successfully my phone before applying the tape to fix the screen) until I finally tried to restart my phone after the repair is done.
Since then I'm not able to turn on my phone
Holding the power button starts fastboot mode, UP + power doesn't do anything and DOWN + power enters recovery. Weird !
Another weird thing: it only works if I'm not plugged. When I'm plugged nothing ever happens.
I suspected I could have damaged buttons or cables. I have looked carefully but nothing appears to be broken.
Here is what I already did without any result:
- I had access to the original recovery so wiped the cache
- I tried to recover the phone but that did not work so
- I installed twrk using adb (like here)
- and then installed the rom as explained here (I used the last release here, so it should be cm-13.0-20160819-SNAPSHOT-ZNH5YAO0IN-bacon.zip). It seemed to work but finally no, same situtation
- I tried this but so far not able to get the qualcomm port listed once the phone is on. It may be related to the fact that I have to unplug to boot it but I always got a Android bootloader interface listed.
Any idea someone ?

Did you try to "fastboot reboot" while in fastboot mode?
Try flashing a CM14 rom. Mine came with CM12 so I tried flashing back to CM11 and I did flash it successfully through Fastboot but alas it won't boot. The boot logo loads but then I'm introduced to a black screen.. So I flashed back to a (at that time the latest stable) CM12.1 but same result. And I got worried. Then I decided to flash a CM13 rom which was a beta build (at that time newly released Android 6) and it booted into it alright! So I suggest flashing a CM14 and let me know how it does.
The problem seems be much deeper than just a broken screen. It may sometime affect the chipset of the cellphone.
For that we can't do anything.
For now you can try the following things :
1 . Flash the latest Cyanogen Firmware from the same place you have downloaded the snapshot cm13.
2. Flash recovery (TWRP) using adb.
3. Wipe
-System
-Data
-Cache and Dalvik Cache
4. Flash the latest Cyanogen Rom .
5. Boot into recovery.
6. Flash some gapps as per the Android version.( Open Gapps I recommend)
7. Boot back to recovery .
8. Boot into System.
This is the max you can do for now.
You can also check device forums for recovering from a bricked device post.
Go through the post and check if any symptoms matches yours. You'll find the answer right away.
And the last option you can do is going to service center, they will charge you mostly (even if in warranty as you have yourself tampered hardware of the phone.)

I am brand new to this forum and to android problems.... so forgive "silly questions".
I got a used tf300t which was reset back to factory settings.
I installed the dolphin browser and the last thing I did was installing the opera mobile browser.
Since that the cyanogenmod animation pops up right at the boot process and now and then it finishes booting, but when I wipe the screen in order to unlock it the cy-animation appears again.
Yesterday I got an error message that a system process was shutdown with a java null pointer exception for ..... any language process. (did not note the error message unfortuanately).
This brought to my mind that I changed some keyboard setting for the german keyboard layout and this is very likely the cause of the problem.
Now I wanted to reset the device back to it's factory settings, but I cannot boot into the recovery mode. Pressing power- and volume down button just flashes the screen with the asus logo but when I release the buttons, the cyanogenmode animation again appears.
So how can I "hard-reset" the device and btw. is this cyanogenmod thing really necessary?

update: can now boot into TWRP
update#2: I killed it
I used the wipe option (think it was called this way) for a factory reset - and now it is stuck at the asus logo while booting.
Connect to a PC with cable, see if ADB recognizes it.
If it does, issue (in terminal/command line):

adb reboot bootloader
Wait for it reboot.
Verify fastboot connection
Code:
fastboot devices
If it is recognized, you need to re-flash latest stock firmware (blob), that can be found on Asus website. Make sure you get the right (geo)version for your device (ie: US/JP/WR...)
To flash the stock firmware, find the directions on this forum.

the problem was a different one called cyanogenmod.
When resetting the device the cyanogenmod got uninstalled and therefore restarting was not possible.
I found a backup file of the cyanogenmod and reinstalled it ... and it works
