+20GB space unaccounted for in all File managers. Ghost Data. Need help. - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

As you can see from the 2 pics, my phone shows 92Gb used in settings whereas multiple different file managers show my entire used Storage/ SD to be precisely 68.92Gb.
Where is this ghost data from and how can i find it?
PS this is not an error because the available space is indeed according to 92GB space filled. So only 23gb left.
Any advice is highly appreciated.

I have had very good success with the app SDmaid to clarify those occurences (aside from many other useful features of this app)

Have you tried to backup your important data then format down everything? I know this solution is not the best but perhaps can help you

use sd maid

I haven't yet but that Would be my last resort after Pie release, waiting for stable pie OOS before i format everything and make a fresh start.
Hopefully they will release it in a week or 2. *fingers crossed*

Damn, what a fantastically simple app! Thanks man! Love how i find such hidden gems in this community :victory:
only thing i could tell was that it is showing my full storage to be 108gb which is probably incorrect. I think 128Gb model gets atleast 116GB storage fpr use.
Do u have 128gb storage model?

yea, i have the 128 model and when i first got the phone it said 116gb but i think not the OS takes up 20 GB so it leaves me with 106-108 and then i got like 12gb of data so i am already at 94gb, which is still enough but i really hate how big the android system takes up and guess it has to do with the A and B partition also.

Oh wow, i didn't know that. I think ur right because i went to the root folder in diskusage and there was the entire system, away from the /SD 108gb, so this is separate data worth 20gb or so! Damn :/

Yeesh, not exactly the easiest answer but hey, what can you do? Windows seems to hate ext2 with a passion. Maybe I'll try to contact MartinFick and ask if I can include his script in my app so it can auto-partition the sd card for you.... Can't make any promises though, that's already sounding pretty daunting.
That would be awesome Marcus. I just called customer service for sandisk and he said you cant partition a micro sd card??? weird considering there are a lot of people who have already done this.
If you can get it into your program that would be awesome but i still cnt download anything on 5.0.1g

Umm sandisk representative totally lied... They probably just didn't want you to do that so they won't have to deal with it if your card gets messed up.
On the app front, looks like it's not going to be incorporated for a while, I talked to the dev who wrote the sdsplit script and it apparently has trouble with micro-sd cards over 2GB, and isn't in a final enough state that I'd be comfortable putting it in(I'm trying to avoid bricking people's phones as much as possible).
Oh and Haykuro put up an update called 5.0.1gr2 that is a temp fix for the market issue.
This is weird. Everytime I post from my phone it says I have to wait 30 seconds to post then Iit posts it twice.
Ahh that makes sense. I was wondering what the 5.0.1gr2 version was. I am still on 5.0g because I never had problems with mms.
Marcus how or what program did you use to get the apps to sd?
Also what does your program actually do that is on the market?
Hey Marcus,
Yeah I was the one who discovered the issue with memory cards of over 2GB. Below 2GB it really does work like a charm. You should be able to just put a quick if/then statement that checks the size of the sdcard, and only runs the SD Card formatting for smaller cards.

There's your problem. When it comes to technology, 95% of the time the guy (or gal) on the other side of the line is reading from a script and doesn't know a partition from a file allocation table. Customer service exists for the most part to act as a crude filter for repairs and exchanges.
If your first instinct was to call customer service for the memory card manufacturer, maybe you should steer clear of apps-on-sd
paragon partition magic 9 did the trick. just did my 8gig last night on the demo version.

I just partitioned my card, and did apps to sd, but when I installed wallpaper set and save, it failed, then I found it on my applications in setting tried to uninstall there but that failed how would I remove it with terminal.
if all else failed you can(as superuser) do "cd /system/sd/app" and then find the name of the apk for the app you're trying to uninstall and do "rm (name of the file)"

If we really believe that is the only issue (size greater than 2GB), I might consider putting a check into sdsplit. Not sure how to reliably check that in the first place though?

16GB TF300T only Reporting 12.59GB

I have a brand new TF300T that has not been rooted. We went to the Settings and looked at the Storage option. It says that my internal storage is 12.59GB, not the 16GB I was expecting.
Now, I understand that when a hard drive is formatted, it does not have all the the amount available. 16GB should come out to maybe 15.5GB available.
I returned it to Best Buy and exchanged it for another one. This one reports the same thing?
Ideas?
I have attached a screen shot.

OK? But is it normal to lose 20+% of the hard drive when it is formatted? It seems very excessive.
I would like to see a chart somewhere that tells me how much space I should have available to me on various sized hard drives. Any ideas where I might get something like that?
The OS and pre-installed apps are using part of that 16GB. It isn't reported in the storage screen because you don't have access to it.

I'll provide one link, there are many. Take some of the info with a salt shaker full.
My understanding is one gig is 1074mb not 1024mb as memory chips and drives are sold. This is part of the loss, built in by the method used to determine reported size.
I can setup a 1074mb (not 1024mb) partition as swap and it is listed a 1gig, 1024mb is listed as 1024mb not 1gig. Swap is not formatted.
Other variables enter into the equation as well.
Maybe this will help or at least cause you to continue the search.
Good Luck!:good:

Storage is 40gb not 64gb?

Apparently I'm using just 13gb. The total is 55gb and my available is 26.6gb.
55-13=26.6gb?
It works out that I've actually got nearer 40gb which is quite a bit below 55gb, let alone the 64gb stated (OK 9gb for OS etc, still 9gb is loads for just CM11 nightly IMO).
Normal.
Doesn't appear correct. Did you factory reset and wipe data before flash cm11? I don't own an Opo yet, but make sure you follow the instructions about how to change the rom.

It is correct. You don't have to own a OPO in order to know that this is normal. @Aridon is right but he didn't elaborate on it. Replying with a one word reply doesn't help anyone unless its a yes or no answer.
I don't feel like explaining on why its not 64GB and only 54GB. http://superuser.com/questions/504/why-are-hard-drives-never-as-large-as-advertised read that instead.

Sum all if his usage. It's about 14gb. The count doesn't match. 64gb (64.000.000.000.000) =~ 59.5gb
I know the full capacity is right, but the sum doesn't match.

I don't need to screenshot my oneplus storage. Its 54GB, every OnePlus One (64GB) is 54.87GB.
Whats advertised on the phone (64GB) is not what you actually get. This is applied on everything storage related, USB flash drives, iPods, other phones, SD card expansions, hard drives, SSDs, etc.

When you wipe, everything from your prior rom installation is removed. If it was a bad wipe, then the ROM wouldn't have booted.
I don't even know why I need to prove this to you. I understand you're trying to help but I know this kind of stuff, heres your screenshot.

So, as I said, it isn't normal. He has at least 14 gb of space lost.

I thought that's why its 55 instead of 64.
But even if that's not true and the OS comes out of the 55, the OS accounts for 14-15gb to take me down to 40gb available? I didn't know the CM11 nightly was so heavy?

The OS doesn't come out of the 55gb, it comes out of the 64gb, and that's why you're left with 55gb. As for why you seem to be missing an extra 15gb, I really don't know.

OP, try running df on terminal emulator. Don't think it will show more than what you already have but maybe it'll.
Clarifying, 64gb is actually 64.000.000.000.000 bytes which is equal to 59.5gb. Opo system partitions (system + cache) might have around 5gb, as user storage availability is around 54gb
Definitely there are some files hidden on OP phone in a hidden partition. I think it's somehow related to userdata from a previous rom. I've see that in another device.

Root will not help install apps on microsd. You need a rom for that. Download EMMC brick bug check from the play store and send a screenshot of it.
If all you are looking for is more space to install apps wouldn't it be easier to take the update to Android 6.01 and use the Adoptable Storage feature? Of course you didn't mention which carrier you are using. I can only speak for Verizon which has rolled out 6.01.

Any advice for dealing with Verizon in a case like this?
I've spent hours on the phone with them attempting to switch out this phone early (a year left), but all I hear are excessive costs for "upgrades", even after I said I'd be willing to go back to a 64gb S3.
Do you have your old phone? If not, buy one. They're dirt cheap.

After rooting, copy all data from the SD card to prepare to format and partition. Personally, I used Apps2SD PRO: All in one tool. It created the partitions, mounted the second to internal storage and left the balance as SD storage.
Used TB to backup app data, then deleted and restored through market to free up internal memory, then restored the data. Had no issues.
From what I've read, it seems that there is question that Link2SD may be a superior way to create the additional internal storage. Apps2SD worked for me, so I didn't do further research. YMMV.
The workaround for the S7 did not work on my phone with MM. You could list the disks, but setting the force flag and partitioning as private did not work.
Good luck.

Phone memory saying full when it shouldn't be

I have a cheap android phone Landvo V11 which has been fine till recently. It has a 16gb internal memory and also an sd card which I use for everthing like vids and downloads. Just recently my phone has been getting so slow and the internal memory is saying its almost full bar a few mb. When I browse the phone on my linux PC all the folders in the phone memory only add up to 233mb but still when I check the properties of the whole thing its saying its full. I even had to delete some apps to update others. I'm guessing its some sort of malware but I just cant see whats taking up the space. Can anyone shed any light on this or tell me a way to see the hidden space that I'm missing. thanks
Android considers any space less than 1GB as full or nearly full storage.

Are you using a file manager app that has a recycle bin? If so, maybe the recycle bin is full.
Use an app that has a cleaner function to wipe unneeded data. Use an app that has a file scanner, it should list everything, where it is stored and how big the files are.

Ive tried using standard file browser, ES file explorer and also tried connecting to my linux machine. Can you give me the names of the apps with file scanner cos I dont know what to get. Also is there maybe a decent app that I could use on my linux machine that may do the trick. There should be over 10gb of space free. Whatever is happening, its using a hell of a lot of space but hiding its self well.
1.Try installing rar app.its best file manager after that see files with (.)dot
And delete them (you can find them inside the folders too
2.try to enter in recovery mode by using key combination method and wipe cache and reboot may solve ur problem
3.if this also dsnt wrk backup ur important data in a pc and after that FACTORY RESET the phn.problem gone
And dont forget to press thanx

After looking up the device it seems some have found that it doesn't have the storage it is advertised to have. Like a knock off flash drive that fakes its storage amount.

Which is already understood. Not what I was talking about at all. As his device is only showing 2gb of storage which has happened with this oem.
People really need to stop buying cheap Chinese devices and expecting them to be telling the truth about hardware.

Which means nothing in this conversation. Its not even the same device and you have zero understanding about what product binning is. Might want to do some research and stop using BS posts to raise your post count. You do know those numbers dont mean anything right? Even the mods have something that blocks out post count as well as thanks count.

He was saying that the device doesn't actually have the amount of internal storage as the manufacturer claims it has.
In other words, the manufacturer "claims" the device has 16GB internal storage, but the device actually has considerably less than that.
