Samsung Experience vs Google GSI - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Guides, News, & Discussion

Now that the Galaxy S9/S9+ supports project treble we users can install the GSI on our phone and have pure stock Android straight from Google running almost flawlessly..
But should we?
Samsung Experiences Pros:
-Dolby Atmos
-Goodlock
-Always On Display
-Theme Engine
-Ultra Powersaving Mode
-Edge Features
-Iris Scanner
-Telephoto Camera
-Samsung Pay
-Waranty
Google GSI Pros:
-Cleaner UI
-Better Performance
-Improved Battery Life
-Instantaneous updates from Google
What do you guys think? Is it worth it?

Except the snapdragon devices arent compatable because of locked bootloaders so be aware of that

I unlocked my device (its a snappy d) and rooted/twrp'd it, but i'm still unsure if it supports GSI's or not.
Can anyone please help me with that???
Best regards!

Name a full backup via TWRP and then try and flash the GSI!

If you get a Snapdragon from China or Latin America G9600/G9650 their bootloaders can be unlocked. On Google GSI vs Samsung experience, I'm for 'pure' android experience, it's lighter and on a good machine faster compared to skinned version. Samsung pie update is scheduled early 2019 and beta for s9/9+ is imminent https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-android-pie-update-schedule-galaxy-s9-beta/

You're Welcome! Hope You'll like it
Because I'm dumb, could someone explain the compatibility with other ROMs?
For example, does this work with lineage OS on the v20?
One question... If I make install them realize I want something I didn't check can I dirty flash? Also, these hidden things that were enabled, are these in the background or is there a way to get to these features?

Basically it will work with all 64Bit Snapdragons on Nougat (7.X.X). But I've seen some Problems on the G5 AOSP ROM's but that may change with the Time (AOSP Updates/Fixes). Feel free to test and Report!
You will get always the best Results with Stock since it's 100% stable...
BtW. I'm still searching Maintainers for LG Devices alias V20,V10 and G6. Details via PM!

Yes You can. But You may get freezes or Force Closes... Clean is always the best Way to go (You will also miss some extras on a dirty flash). The most of the extra Features are working in the Background like advanced Bluetooth Functions (Audio, Filesharing, BLE, Hosting) or the Display Tweaks (CABL,AD,QC Color Control). Most of the stuff is forked from a lot of Android Flagships and based on own research and testing. It may break things from time to time, but once it works it's just awesome.... The Feature list isn't detailed enough to show everything whats inside, but it is a lot! x)

Basically it's just copy/pasting of my Main Thread. I can't handle 5 Threads at once + Homepage + GooglePlus
But someone with some deeper knowledge about Making ROMs would help to eliminate possible Bugs and to gain more Specific Features (I know what the V20 is able to do). My G5 as example can use 4K Video Recording on the Front but it was never included in Stock. I've added it and it works just flawless. Possible that the V20 has similar abilities...
It said we need to use 3.1.0+ TWRP recovery and last time I checked the v20 is still waiting for the 3.1.0 TWRP recovery version. Is it still safe to flash this file with 3.0.2.1?

Got it
TWRP 3.0.2.1 could have Performance issues while flashing (AROMA Freezing) but no One has reported it till now. Think i've fixed it 2 Versions ago...
Where does one get a flashable keyboard from?
Can we get the "battery drain fixes" without this ROM? And, what ARE the battery drain fixes exactly? I'm seeing a pretty heavy battery drain on my ROM.

As i saw in the video camera works for that person.
It's Moto camera but I'm not sure which version it is..
I'm not sure if the video recording works because it's still broken in LOS15 as this Rom is based on Los15..
Currently present 8.0 lux roms
Of the available, AOSP_Extended 5.0 stands out far ahead.
The build is unofficial, as usual.
I am using it from past 1 month, and it works like magic.
Gapps for Oreo got instaled easily.
No bugs whatsoever.
Best part is, it is as fluid as it can ever be.
Never seen a 2gb RAM phone respond so good, gazillion times better than those so common 4gb MI's.
Battery life in battery saver mode improved, camera app is non-responsive, so suggest to flash any other camera app. I am using CameraMX, and it's working good. Personal choice here.
It's better than buggy version of unofficial build Lineage 15 lux, and others. I haven't tried crDroid though. So, can't say about it.

Update file can only be sideloaded through ADB or installed from SD card from recovery menu. Install will fail if the current build version is not the same as mentioned above for each build
Disclaimer:
Install beta builds on you own risk. I shall not be responsible for any issues caused by the beta version of operating system.
Since the build is not final, it may not be good idea to use it as a daily driver because of various bugs, crashes and battery drain issues.
I hope there will be a beta build for S8 and S8+ Exynos.

Not officially from Samsung. But something may come out. The S8 series isn't part of the beta program.
Hey suyash1629, I'm not new to xda but new to messaging someone on here and for the life of me can't figure out how to message you directly. I'd like the download for the beta for the regular s9. If you could help me out I'd greatly appreciate it.

adhell might,
swift installer needs to be updated :/
a rootless substratrum method might be made for Samsung again tho, considering Samsung Pie does still support themes.
nonetheless considering swift installer is just a total dark theme, I'll have you know that almost all of Googles apps either have a built in dark themed or are getting a dark theme sooner or later,
and WhatsApp (if you use it, I would be surprised if you don't) has a dark theme in the works.
You can always download unofficial apps/mods for other apps you want dark themes for, so even if swift installer doesn't get updated it isn't the end of the world

I also own a Exynos S9+ Dual Sim Germany unlocked. We will have to wait until the official Galaxy Beta Program launches and eventually also in your country. Then you will be able to sign in for the beta program over the Samsung Members App.

Suggestion: wich custom ROM?

I have under my hands a brand new S7... and basically after seeing 1.5GB ram is busy without having installed any app (so at the moment only deafault apps) and without having done nothing special (navigate in menu, check the camera, open some options) I started searching for decent custom ROM, preferibily 8.0 based.
So, any suggestions considering I'm searching for
- great battery management (I suppose it could be done with a custom rom)
- great camera management (eh...)
- no issues with bluetooth, GPS, wifi
- ... clearly the phone works to call in & out
Thanks for everyone can help in this hard decision
(the fact isn't I'm lazy... honestly I don't have so much time to test several roms)
THANKS
hey.
Didnt test this ROM ony my Galaxy s7, but with my Galaxy s6 and my Note i was on this ROM.
I was very happy with that.
Small, many features and i would say : easy to use.
U can give it a try, if you want...
Before : do a full System backup via TWRP and if you didnt like the ROM, u can easily Restore your old Firmware .

??
it is a beta, maybe something stable is better
Non-working/partially working features:
GPS
Wireless Display
Wi-Fi Direct
Possibly other things not listed.
I don't recommend Resurrection Remix, because it is EOL (End of Life, which means it doesn't get updated anymore)
I've used LightROM and The Galaxy Project.
I tried them both and they both were stable. I tried LightROM for a couple of weeks en currently I'm using The Galaxy Project. I've installed a lot of apps and I'm using a good amount of them each day. Never had any problems with RAM or battery with these roms.
The most stable roms are always roms that are stock-rom based.
Roms like LineageOS for example have some bugs and always will have. Last time I checked there were still some minor bluetooth calling issues, calling over loudspeaker introduces echo, volte isn't working, camera isn't as good and probably some other small things. Doesn't mean that LineageOS is a bad rom for the S7, it definitely has some advantages but if you are looking for really stable roms and you don't have a lot of time for testing and reflashing then you are safer with stock-based roms.

The galaxy project with morokernel v4.6 gave the best battery and ram management and it was a very stable rom.
Actually I'm on resurrection remix 6.2.1 the last one released in October, it has fixed a lot of bugs and it's so smooth and the battery is lasting a lot more longer than stock roms, you won't find this version on xda but on github even if he stated it was EOL but he gave it a last shot and forgot to update his thread. Good luck

It's hard to say which rom is the best, but at this moment I like The Galaxy Project the most. But this is just based on using the roms, not on stats.
Both roms run smooth and didn't give me any problems.
Flashing is for both roms are basically the same. There are some small differences but both roms describe how to do the installation. Both roms have aroma installers, so you're able to tweak your installation a little to your preferences.
The Galaxy Project offers just 1 flashable zip, which includes the rom and additional apps in 1 zip.
LightRom is split up into 2 flashable zip files, the rom itself and additional apps are separated.

Thanks again... will start with the galaxy project and maybe try flashing the morokernel v4.6 (due to the fact it seems this rom is using the TGPKernel to 6.10.5

Thanks, will try The galaxy project also with morokernel v4.6.
About the RR or other roms I'm guessing how the camera is managed... I mean if these roms are able to manage the camera better (or equal) than the stock one

The last version of RR has a good camera preinstalled, but if you install the moded Google camera with HDR+ (you can look for the thread here in xda... Gcam for s7) you'll get amazing photos waay better than Samsung stock believe me

Using TGP I used to get 4h to 5h on SOT and with RR more than 6h with same usual usage. For more better and smoother experience you should change the animation scales in developer option to x0.5 use it for 2 or 3 days and come back to say thanks

Look for RR 6.2.0 final here in s7 forum and check page 20 (the developer posted this last version in a comment instead of updating it in the thread) it was a last fix for bluetooth issues and many little bugs
