I'm doing my research to figure out which tablet to purchase when the wave of CES2011 tablets hit the market.
Like most here on XDA, I won't want to run the stock image from the manufacturer for obvious reasons. But in order to get a custom rom, there needs to be critical mass here on XDA for its development.
So I'd like to figure out - what tablet do you plan to purchase when they're released? That will help me narrow down my choices to those that will have interest from the Chef community.
I don't know yet -- I want to get something smallish and inexpensive that the kids can use for messing around -- perhaps a Nook color rooted and rom'd
Hmm -- I wonder if the Nook cooks have a honeycomb ROM in the works...

I'm running the Nook Color with Honeycomb v04 flash zip you can find in the Nook Color section. It runs pretty good now, can't wait to see what happens when the full source code is out.
The size is great, screen is awesome and the devs are doing some amazing things already with them. Plus at $250 can't beat the price.
I am planning on buying a Nook Color to use as a Honeycomb tablet. (Especially when the AOSP Honeycomb source is released for the Nook Color developers to get a hold of.)
I would jump on a nook color, but the 7" screen is just a little too small for me.
I've narrowed my search to 10" screens @ 1280X800 (or equivalent).
My ideal specs:
Processor: Dual Core ARM (Tegra 2 or equiv)
Screen: 10" @ 1280X800 (hopefully could be read outside)
Battery Life: 8-10hrs
Wifi: B/G/N
3G: Not necessary, would leech off my phone's wifi router
OS: No overlay interface, just plain old honeycomb from the chefs here at XDA
Camera: Front & Back (although I only care about front for video conferencing)
System Memory: At least 1 gig, 2 would be preferable
Storage: 8gb+ onboard; SD card to augment
Power source: Stanard Mini or Micro USB; No proprietary charger
GPS: Don't care
Color: Any color as long as comes in black
Accessories:
- Docking / charging station that allows viewing at either Horizontal or Vertical
- iPad like case that allows a variety of viewing positions & props up for typing
Yea, Nook Color is excellent, but is a little small for me as well.
I'm also looking for a 10.2" tablet. There are so many out there now, epad for example. They are cheap as well, but most have 2.1. I'd live to get one with 2.2 for cheap.

Interesting - Lenovo plans to announce their 1200x800 tablet at $399 and $449 and seems to be one of the less expensive tablets with leading specs (not sure if will have Qualcomm or Tegra processor).
I'm guessing TigerDirect, Amazon, NewEgg and others will carry their stuff, even if you don't see it in Best Buy or other stores.
Will the price be attractive enough to snag this vs. the competition?
I'm looking at the huawei s7 slim. 7" 800x400 1.2ghz snapdragon. Android 2.2 3g capable. Around the $300 price range
The pro version seems promising as well. Although for a heftier price tag.

Hello Everyone,
I decided that 8 inches tablets are the way to go for pdf files. Sure a 10 or 11' has more screen real estate, but 8 inches tablets are more portable. Now, I narrowed down my choices to the Acer Iconia A1-810, Asus Memo Pad 8 and the Dell Venue 8. They are all 8 inches and very affordable. I must mention that I only have about $200 to spend, so anything over $200 is out of the question. I was considering the first generation Nexus 7, but a 7 inch tablet is not ideal for my collection of technical pdf files (o'reilly programming books,engineering books, etc). I know if I get the Nexus 7, I'll get tired of zooming in all the time just to read a textbook and more than likely end up playing games. I'm aware that due to my low budget, I can't expect a lot from those two choices. Having said that, what I don't like about the Iconia A1-810 is its low resolution and that it only has 1GB of memory. Then again, the original iPad Mini had the same low resolution (1024x768). The Dell Venue 8 on the other hand, has 2GB of ram and a 1280x800 resolution. The problem is that I have heard so many negative comments about this tablet dying suddenly or the screen having zero sensitivity. What do you think? Any advice? Another tablet you might consider is the Le Pan Mini. Its an 8" with a 4:3 ratio (or close to it). IPS panel with 1024 x 768 resolution. Quad core 1.2 GHz. Super thin and light. I'm getting about 8 hours at least on a charge. I bought one about 2 weeks ago for 129.00 at OfficeMax. They are currently on sale for 149.00. I love it.
I was strongly considering that dell venue 8 as well but they didn't have one on display and like you I've heard some negative reviews on it. Plus I've had 3 other Le Pan tablets and really liked them. Check out LePanForum.com for a good review and some pictures.

Well I broke down and bought a dell venue 8 (android). It is a great tablet. Screen crisp, clear and responsive. The tablet is very quick and the on board speaker is strong loud and clear. I've read the negative reviews but I must say it is a great tablet.

I would suggest Samsung tab 3 8 inch variant. It's a budget tab.

What do you guys think of the Nook HD+... (I wish I could quote the magazine which recently listed it as being around $130 + tax.) If its 9" or so, it sounds very doable. I'm not too pleased with my Kindle Fire HD which is around 7" I think (bought it in fall of 2012).
Thankfully, you don't always have to click through to a website in a Google search. It looks like Rakuten.com lists this nook as $139.

8" tablets may be a little more portable than 10-11" tablets but the 8-incher still doesn't fit in the pocket. To each his own - I now have a bluetooth keyboard for my kindle yet I still find it too difficult to work on, but it could be because of the tasks I accomplish.

I just wanted to ask around and see if anyone has gotten any of these "Chinese" tablets. (I think most of them are made in china but anyways) I used to have a nexus 7 (first gen) but wasn't happy with the lack of expandability (storage and such). I don't really want to spend a lot of money on a tablet as I won't be using it much and the main thing I will be using it for is watching movies and shows on the go. These are either my personal rips, netflix, or dish anywhere, etc. These "chinese" tablets seem to have what I want as far as screen size, resolution, memory expandability and processing specs. The downside is there aren't many professional reviews of them and the ones on amazon seem to be from one end of teh spectrum to the other. The ones I was looking at are...

Mipad best bang for buck, infact, the price and the specs you get are bloody brilliant! Really really great value, I don't know how Xiaomi get away with it
Its about £230 (some places £180 but + import tax could be more, I say use EBay because you have buyer protection etc) I'm looking into buying the Mipad myself, (I currently have an LG G Pad, heavily mod'd)
The only downside (which is to be expected) is the OS on the Mipad MIUI (on Xiaomi phones Mi2 Mi3 Mi4 its great, but on thus Mipad its half finished, buggy etc.)
But hey I enjoy a challenge

Lenovo Yoga 8 is very good. Quad-Core, Android 4.2 Operating System, Battery Life – Up to 18 Hours, but if you want to play games with a higher experience, I would recommend you another game tablet (JXD S7800B), 7.0 inches, quad core.

I actually would recommend you the iPad Mini 3, because it's almost matching all your requirements except that it is iOS.
Apple will really ensure that you're requirements will be finished.!

For an EBook type of device I would suggest the Tesco Hudl 2
I know what your thinking.... No way dude!!
But I was surprised at how good this piece of kit is for like £120.
Quad core, Intel, full HD, the casing around the tablet isn't pretty but its great specs for the price.

I've just ordered the lenovo tab s8-50 http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/general/lenovo-s8-s8-50-tablet-support-t2924127 which specs look very similar (except lighter) ... 161E today at rueducommerce which is around 128GBP ...

Not all quad core is good.this machine uses MTK8382 which is a very slow quad core machine.
And It's pretty Energy Hungry,It only could go on up to 10-12Hr.
Also RK3188?No please.A Allwinner A31 could win the RK3188...
2,I would not like to suggest the lenovo one is the warranty service.If your machine have something and you take it to the service centre,the day it fixed you will get "another machine".

Based on past experience with multiple tablets, in spite of all the pronouncement about android memory management, I have found tablets with 1 GB RAM laggy. Of late, I have loved using the 2013 Nexus 7 tablet (on kit kat and lollipop) and now would like to get a bigger android tablet for reading PDF text books. I am not fussy about getting the highest possible screen resolution. Right now, ASUS MeMO Pad FHD 10 seems to have the right specs at a very reasonable price, although some people have complained about certain apps not working well with the Intel Atom Z2560 processor. Can you suggest a few alternative choices ?
