Which route to take - update and root for a used H910 - LG V20 Guides, News, & Discussion

I've just received a used V20 from ebay. It's an unlocked at&t H910. It's currently on a April 1, 2017 security patch with a software version of H91010m.
I want to root the phone so I can get Greenify, debloat and run xposed but after spending quite some time perusing the many rooting threads on here as well as others floating around the web, I'm no closer to making a decision on how to go about it! I'm used to Samsung and rooted my previous 2 Notes (3 and 4) with TWRP installed and various custom ROM's but the V20 seems to be a veritable minefield!
What would people suggest is the best option - keep the phone on this version and root it, or update it to the latest version (I'm in the UK so I'd have to manually update it as I can't use OTA over here) and then root it? Which is the safest rooting method ?
If I do successfully root the device, are there any issues reverting it to stock when it comes to selling it? I bought a Xiaomi Note 5 when my Samsung Note 4 broke and whilst I have enjoyed using it for the past 3 or so weeks, I think the V20 would suit my uses better (especially the removable battery and stronger camera) but if the V20 doesn't suit I'd like to get it back to stock and sell it.
Thanks for your time!

First this should be asked in q and a section, you can't use the dirty santa method as it's patched based on your security update. So follow this thread to root

Okay, is there a way to get a mod to relocate this to Q&A?
So I guess I may as well go ahead and try and update to the latest firmware then, if I can't (as I thought) use the dirty santa rooting option?

Nope you have to have a security patch earlier than Dec 2016 to use the dirty santa exploit, and since there are no kdz for the 910 you can't downgrade

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean, I was talking about updating to the latest version so I have the most recent security patches before going ahead with the rooting procedure that you linked (thanks for that).

Yes, I know and understand. What I was asking, and what I referenced in my initial message was regarding updating the phone. From what I'd read before posting I had assumed that the phone is already at a stage where I can no longer use dirty santa, which you confirmed.
So I am assuming that there will be no negatives to updating my phone to the latest security patch before rooting?

Thanks. I'll have a look at going through that this evening.

Sure, you can upgrade. Be sure to upgrade, and then follow that thread that @cnjax posted -- for the ultimate time waste.
Or, you could read the thread, and see that you are going to have to flash an H915 KDZ, so you will just have to upgrade all over again if you do.

I'm pretty sure it breaks the ability to unlock the bootloader. Root may still be possible though.

I'm testing root and unlock now via casual. Will follow up.
EDIT: CWM flash was good. Casual said it unlocked. I'm downloading the app to relock/unlock to verify that functionality. Then I'm going to try flashing CM10

Success! I am now on CM10 on new OTA update. No worries folks. New bootloader can still be flashed to unsecure, can still be rooted.

Doh!
Well, in that case, I guess I didn't need to hurry and root/unlock just now in the fear that I'd be blocked off forever.
Oh well, I really didn't want that "remote access" app anywhere near my phone.
I was able to update to the new OTA and keep Root/Bootloader Unlocked using The Mobile Odin Pro App.
By the way, no surprise but they did in fact "dumb down"on device searching.

Not giving Verizon more power, they tried to sneak this download at 230am if I wasn't up my phone may have taken it, either way we should be given the choice if we want this dl.as for a diagnostic tool we have the xda forums which in my option is better then Verizon help..ex.my phone txt/call not working...Verizon: did you try a factory reset?....my volume on my phone is way to low..Verizon: did you try a factory reset...I wanna change the led to fit the msg to my liking not working right.Verizon: did you try a factory reset?....this is what they use to tell me when I had a problem years ago, but now I look to the xda forum for advice, input, help, options. so I'll stay clear from Verizon helping me..lol this has been just a little example.from your neighbor hood friendly hulk...

I can confirm 100% you will have no issues with it. I look like a newbish person here as I don't come on xda much. I just thought I'd spread the love over here. I'm usually over @ Rootz.
http://rootzwiki.com/user/19244-goose306/
I don't like to pull this card, but hopefully you see I have enough reps over there to at least know what I'm talking about
That being said all its going to really do is give you a better radio and patch the no sim issue, and install more bloat (Verizon Remote Access) and dumb down your search abilities. So its about 50/50 as far as benefits. But if you don't like it you can ODIN back to previous firmware versions anyways, so it really isn't that big of a deal. The best benefit you could have would be to root it, unlock it, block the OTA, then install the new radio separately. This will get you the benefit of the new radio and patching the no sim error but without the new Verizon bloat and without the neutered search capability. Best of both worlds.
If you plan on flashing ROMs about the only thing you will be keeping from this OTA going forward will be the new radio. So it doesn't really make a lick of difference either way as the radio can be flashed separately as discussed.

Thanks, I said f'k it and rooted and unlocked. Don't plan on flashing anything now because am really enjoying this Rom stock but when we get a Verizon JB leak I want to make sure I can install it. We will probably see a leak months before a release.
Had anyone seen any improvement with the new radio as of yet, I know it's a bit early to tell really but, well...you know.

No offense but are you an idiot? Our boot loader is still locked so this kernel is useless for us right now.
ATT users have to wait until Dan releases his exploit, then you can flash a custom recovery and kernel.

Actually I think attempting to flash a different kernel might have tripped his monotonic counter and with no way to fix it yet, when they receive and check his device for warranty they will see this and cancel the claim and most likely return the phone as is and make you return whatever device you swapped it for.
I saw a post from a very respected dev say the same thing about returning his phone and everyone was like "yeah you are the man, do it rah rah rah" and everyone is killing the guy here...hilarious really.

Rooting the AT&T LG G2

My friend has the AT&T G2 and she received an OTA update to her phone on 2/13/14. I want to help her root her phone but I am not sure if the update she received will present any challenges. Can I still use the rooting methods that were already established before her phone received this update ?

I was literally doing the exact same thing this afternoon too. My friends phone has the newest OTA and is on firmware D80010q.
I tried the normal methods to no avail. I was able to get Superuser on the phone, however, didn't have root access. From what I've been able to come up with we have to downgrade to D80010d in order to root it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50354625&postcount=2121

Yeah its not my phone, its a girl who lives a few hours away. But if the rooting software isn't updated by the next time I see her (2 weeks or so), I'll most likely give it a shot. Post here or PM me and keep me updated on how it all goes. I found a youtube video that went through it and it doesn't seem that difficult.
Yea my friend isn't exactly close and she is likely to be deterred by any extra steps.
Does that video cover downgrading the software version back to d? If so post the link. If it's just a rooting a video I don't need it. I already rooted my Sprint G2.

With the newest software, root is somewhat useless. Xposed may not work correctly, no OTA, plus note 5 has the electronic root thing, so when you tooth the phone, it is tripped and can never be returned to original state, thus, service providers will know it is rooted and may deny repair, replacement.

I see your point bit IMO rooting is better than stock. Xposed works fine, I like my Adaway and youtube ad block, other phone customizations etc.

Nice, can someone else let us know if rooting is possible with the OK3 update?
Reminds of the note 4 0e1 update lol

You do realize sprint doesn't even remotely care right? They just ask that you have "stock" when you have a problem and need the device serviced. However if you are stock rooted this has no bearing whatsoever.

Kies should work, no?
I know it's hit or miss but try it

I don't think he's worried about Sprint. He just wants stock.

[Locked Bootloader] Using Rowhammer / Drammer To Gain Root on 6.0

PROJECT ABANDONED.
None of my test units are vulnerable, and no other dev has shown interest.
Good news though, hope is not lost- there is a big vuln unrelated to Drammer that may be the key to CID 11 getting root.
I am working on this new project actively, as I have already gotten root access on my test units.
THIS IS A R&D THREAD!! Please only contribute / wait patiently.
This aims to get CID 11 (locked bootloader) users rooted on 6.x ROMs.
*Note: VUSec has decided against releasing their implementation of the exploit (a test utility was provided instead).
This may change in the future, but until then we will attempt our own implementation based on their work.
If you would like to see if your device would be vulnerable you can use VUSec's app here: https://vvdveen.com/drammer/drammer.apk

I can help test when the time comes
I have experience recovering from a hard brick
I have a g900v that is not my daily driver it is cid15 and not rooted or bootloader unlocked
I'm on pd1 mm official firmware

Thank you
Glad to see there is a chance of a root method for Galaxy s5 Verizon 6.0. Thanks for the hard work!

I hate to rain on the parade, hauckk. But i don't see where you're able to help for the CID 11 devices...? unfortunately, you're unable to help as to this thread was made to aim to get the CID 11 users rooted on 6.x ROM's. Being that you have the CID 15 device and that you're rooted with the bootloader unlocked, i don't see how you're going to help with the CID 11 users. Especially from "hard brick" because of you not owning a CID 11 device.
Again, I'm for smokerbond to continue with his OP and not questioning him one bit :good:. It's how someone with the CID 15 device will be fit in when you're able to do what others cannot...?
Um row hammer is a ram memory exploit it doesn't matter what emmc chip I have it is the same device with the exception of the eMMC chip
So it makes no difference and I'm not rooted and I am bootloader locked

You said Ram exploit. Which this exploit is a more than Ram. I'll leave it be as just. No need to have this go OT....

Rowhammer is a hardware exploit with it's vector on the RAM. Go read up and educate yourself. Anyway, the guy just volunteered to help, no need to get all worked up.

This the explanation of the exploit
Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
I know about the exploit and what it's about....not 'flaming' you at all, it was somewhat how you first defined it and also with you having the 15 chip i don't see much of how it may help as to it's vulnerable opposed to the 11. Speaking of which, there was no mention of the CID's of the 2 devices used in the test. Could one of them have been a 15 CID and the other the 11 CID??? That may be something one's need to request for more information on the devices used. May help with the OP's R&D of this topic.....
Great point I hadn't thought about that the different cids 15 or 11 in the test

Willing to test
I'm willing to test. On SM-G900V with locked bootloader that cannot be unlocked, eMMC 11 Toshiba chip. Currently running the Norma Note 5 ported ROM. When I have the time to mess around with this I will let you know the results. Thanks.
Please test on eMMC 11 and post progress

Happy to see some users are still fighting for control over the VZW S5 with eMMC 11 chips. That being said, anyone have luck getting root on 6.0* ROMs? I just flashed BS_FREE_MM_PF4 via Safestrap on my locked bootloader, which is great to have stripped down / bloatware free(ish); however, there are just some root features I can't live without.
Obviously, it's definitely time to upgrade to an s7 or perhaps wait for the Note 8... any device suggestions?

I just haven't had any time to look into this and give it a shot. I'm going to see if I can get to work on it now though. I'll have the next 3 days off, so hopefully that should give me some time. I'll post updates when I can.

So I just went through the links at the beginning of this thread, and just realized that I cannot do this. I do understand what you're trying to do, but I'm not the person to test this out. While I got the concept, I'm not a programmer, or someone who knows code etc... Sorry that I couldn't be of any help, but hopefully someone who's a lot smarter than me will be willing to test.

Nobody thought you'd be able to tbh
They didn't even release an actual root method
