[Q] USB stops working if you enable USB debugging? - Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) Questions & Answers

After I install TWRP recovery, RMM-State_Bypass.zip, no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0.zip and root (either magisk or supersu), enabling USB debugging from developer options causes USB to stop working, and the phone isn't seen by the PC anymore (neither MTP nor ADB). Has anybody else experienced this? Any idea why it happens?

First thing update twrp and dont think this phone doest have adb.
Sent from my SM-A730F using xda premium

Just to clarify, I mean the ADB/USB in Android, not in TWRP.
Both USB and ADB work perfectly on the official ROM (before you flash any custom stuff – recovery etc.)

It most certainly has ADB, what do you mean? Like I said, ADB works fine for as long as all the flashed images are official. This makes me suspect it's connected to Knox protection in some way, but I'm surprised I haven't seen anybody else complain about it.

Which OS are you on? If you're in N and using my MCK v1 for N it's a known bug, in case you're in N/O with stock/MCK for O then it's a known bug on Sammy firmwares, try to keep USB Debug enabled, reboot your phone, unplug and replug the USB cable and see if the "Allow modifications" popup appears

I'm on stock Oreo. I'll try your workaround and report back, thanks.

No improvement unfortunately. Once you flash a root zip (either SuperSu or Magisk), the ADB pairidng and the "allow connection" popups stop appearing, and the phone is not visible on the PC in either MTP or ADB mode.
The interesting thing is that the phone continues to chime and flash the home button when you insert the USB cable.
Charging still works normally.
Changing USB mode from developer settings seems to have no effect.
Before flashing a root zip (but after flashing the RMM and dm-verity fixes), USB worked as expected.

Check if the same issue occurs while using my custom kernel

I've tried flashing v1 but it had a problem where Settings would crash every time I tried to enter developer settings. I'll try flashing it on a system with USB debug already enabled, see if it makes a difference.

Tablet not detected when connected via usb at all

I connect my tablet to my two laptops, one is win 8.1 and the other osx, neither shows any sign of knowing the tablet is connected at all.
it does not prompt me to instal any drivers, i dont see it in device manager though i could be missing it. definitely doesnt show up in file explorer as a drive. have tried switching from mtp to ptp and back again. I have no dea. The same cable when connected to the charger works fine, but no sign of life on a computer.
I'm trying to root it and get CM10 on there but this is stopping me in my tracks.
edit: i also just tried an older windows xp computer, no luck their either.

Tried both that I own. And it charges fine. Also tried connection the keyboard dock and then the cable to that. Out of ideas.
USB debugging has been enabled and disabled multiple times. Multiple reboots. I'm going to try rolling back the firmware from .10 to .8

You don't need to root it to install a custom ROM, you need to unlock the bootloader.

Well its successfully unlocked. But I'm like 99% sure I need root for goo manager to install twrp. Or USB to work to install twrp via fastboot.... No?

I wouldn't start installing custom anything without working fastboot and adb access.
- Make sure the contacts of the connector and cable are clean.
- Do the equivalent of "lsusb" under OSX to check if the tablet is detected.
- Try different USB ports.

Have tried five ports accross three computers on three operating systems. Two usb cables, and the use of the dock should have bypassed any dirty connections. I can try Ubuntu live boot tomorrow if it comes to that.
Sent it off to get fixed, they verified they had the same problem, waited weeks for a replacement part, they replaced it and sent it back. And its doing the samn damn thing. So done with this tablet.

No, and I would think a factory reset which I've done multiple times would have undone that even if I had on accident some way.

How do you connect the tablet to the PC? Always through the dock USB?
Do you have the same problem when connecting the tablet directly? Undock it, use the original cable to connect to different USB ports.

Nexus 5- Fastboot / TWRP Installed, NO OS, NO USB Access

Fastboot / TWRP installed, NO OS, NO USB access
I can boot in bootloader and recovery (TWRP 2.6.3.1), Win7 drivers+adb+fastboot are installed properly since I have 2 Nexus 5 and 1 is working fine (I can see the device with "fastboot devices").
There is NO OS installed, I can not connect via USB, and I can not mount the USB-OTG (tried with the working phone and it work fine).
In TRWP when try to reboot it tells me that "the device does not appear to be rooted" but the device has been rooted.
When it boot into the bootloaded, I have a window popping with the yellow triangle, than disapears, (USB device not recognized)
There is nothing in the device manager.
In bootloader I have: variant D820H, HW rev: rev_11, bootloader:HHZ12h, secure boot:enabled,Lock state:unlocked
How do I revive the phone to transfer a rom since I can not use USB-OTG or USB connection, is there a cmd I can run on the phone via terminal to enable the USB (/data is empty).
Thanks

Yes fastboot is properly installed, I tried it to connect using my other working nexus 5 and it works fine, when I type "fastboot devices" I get the serial # of the phone.
With this Nexus 5 I get nothing.
NB: If I boot the phone, it get stuck with the google logo (since no OS is installed)
I just want to be able to transfer a rom file on the phone...

When I boot into recovery (TWRP), I can not connect, my computer does not recognize the USB port (tried differents cables including the LG original cable). like I said everything is installed properly since I have another Nexus 5 and I can perform all operation.
Is it possible that the USB is disabled / missing config file in TRWP or in bootloader ?

In TWRP don't you have to mount system in order to get MTP? Newer versions can do it not sure about the version you are using. If you cannot get the phone to mount over USB in either fastboot over recovery in not sure what you can do. Possibly a bad USB port on the phone?

I have TWRP 2.6.3.1 installed, I can mount everything except USB-OTG (USB-OTG device is working fine on my other Nexus 5 and I can mount it within TWRP), the usb port was working fine since I was able to root, and flash other roms, phone is almost new, when the phone is connected to the PC and I turn it on (Start in System), the PC detects a USB connection and then fail.
I know for sure it is not the USB connector, it is just something in the phone USB config that is corrupted.
The only thing I can do is use File explorer within TWRP to play with (not even sure if I can edit a file).
If anyone can guide me into checking the USB config file on the phone I will really appreciate.
I wish there was an an external SD card slot...

Can you get the phone to mount on a PC in TWRP or bootloader? Have you tried sideloading from recovery? Are the TWRP versions the same on both phones? There was mounting/OTG changes at some point but I'm not sure when. Don't think there are any USB config files you can access especially for the bootloader.

no I can not mount on a PC, the PC does not see the phone, if there is a cmd I can run in the terminal from TWRP to check/enable the USB, I'm not familiar with Android sdk.
So far, I typed "dmesg" in the terminal, and I can see that in :
usbhid: USB HID core driver
....
sps:BAM 0xf9304000 is registered
sps:BAM 0xf9a44000 is registered
usb_bam_ipa_create_resources: Failed to create USB_PROD resource
So the phone USB driver is not loaded...
Sorry mate, other than enabling MTP under mounts in twrp I have no idea. If the phone doesn't mount in fastboot I got nothing. I do everything in fastboot and other than setting up my PC there was nothing else to do.
Hope you figure something out.

Thanks, just to let you know that I tried to bind the USB port to a folder and I get "permission denied", so I thing I lost the root access, I tried to issue /su, got also "permission denied".
I probably need to find how to root the phone from within the terminal cmd.
If there's no os what are you going to root? What happened to the phone where the usb port doesn't work and there's no os?

Like I said I can get to the bootloader and TWRP, but the usb communication is gone (and it is NOT the usb connector).
If I put the phone into fastboot, it is not recognized by the PC, if I boot in recovery (TWRP) the PC detect a usb connection but fail to install the driver.
When I'm in TWRP, I go into Advanced > terminal cmd, I type "dmesg" in the terminal, and I can see that in :
========================
usbhid: USB HID core driver
....
sps:BAM 0xf9304000 is registered
sps:BAM 0xf9a44000 is registered
usb_bam_ipa_create_resources: Failed to create USB_PROD resource
========================
So I know that the USB driver inside the phone is not loading...if the phone does not load its own driver there is no way to use the USB cable nor the USB-OTG...
I know you have a second Nexus 5 and have used it to check against this one that you're having issues with so this may sound stupid, but how about trying a different PC/Mac other than the one you've been using?
I had the same problem, but with a working phone.
Everything was fine except the usb connection. So I ordered the USB PCB from eBay for about $8, replaced it, and everything is fine now.
Edit: This is the part, from a quick ebay search

Don't bet on it.
Mine was working fine too, and it just stopped. A stray voltage or a spike while you insert or remove the usb plug, is enough.

Broken Screen

Hello guys, my phone dropped today and half of the screen is not working anymore. Also the touch does not seem to work. The problem is I just want to copy my photos to my computer but i cant because of the phone is locked and it needs a pattern password to unlock. Is there anyway without replacing the screen to copy my photos or unlock the phone. Thank you.
Hi,
You can plug an OTG cable and plug in a mouse to work around the touch screen issue. Other possibility is trying to boot in recovery mode to manage the files via USB, though I'm not sure if it would allow you to access internal data using adb or not.
All the best,

Hey i do have the USB OTG and i plugged in a mouse to try to enable the adb debugging but the problem is that i can't see the screen so i am working blindly and trying to 'guess' where i should click.
The thing is i can unlock my phone with the fingerprint, but when i connect it to the computer the files do not show, i believe there is a button i have to click to enable MTP ?
I really can't believe its that hard to copy some files from my phone just because the screen is black
Hi,
Yes there is a button to enable MTP and it is in fact hard to enable it without looking at the screen. Have you tried booting in Recovery to access your files?

My phone is not recognized by any computer even if it's in download mode, I have twrp, and I am willing to do the nandroid backup method, the question is, if this process failed for any reason, would I be able to get a previous working status that I am on right now?

Please advise me on how to get my phone working normally as it was, thanks.

Yes, the USB debugging is enabled and also the MTP is mounted as well, but how do I check to update the sdk tools?
If you are talking about the computer, I think the issue is in the phone, and that's because when I discovered this issue I noticed that when I connect my original charger, it was telling me Charging Rapidly, and now ain't say so but still charging well.
Your response is much appreciated.

I have tried everything you can imagine, different cables, different ports and even different computers (desktop and laptop) I think the issue is in my device as it used to write rapidly charging while connected to the DC charger with the original cable and tried multiple ones with no success, it still charge well but I think something is missing in recognition the device USB, I am totally lost the connectivity between my phone and the computer even if I am in the download mode and/or recovery mode.
Any further ideas would be much appreciated.
I have found a thread that posted document for RUU installation and that includes Nandroid backup recovery file which is doable for me to copy the file into the recovery folder and to do the restore from the recovery (TWRP latest version) this file has a stock firmware for Oreo version, but I am not sure if I proceed with this what would happen as I mentioned earlier, I have no connection between my device and any computer which is mandatory to recover the device from any brick could happen, I need a confirmation on this step (Nandroid restore) so I can check, thanks in advance.

Phone is rooted. If there is any way to get to my photos/files I'd greatly appreciate any advice. Am planning to send phone for repair to Oneplus but they wipe data.

Adb needs Authorization. You have to guess and click "Allow" if touch is working.
Adb works only if you have previously authorised the pc. If you have authorised some pc(even OS change matters) before, you can try using that.
Sadly our device doesn't support DisplayPort over type-c i.e. type -c to hdmi.
