Photo comparison: Redmi Note 5 vs Google Pixel 2 XL using the ported gcam on Note 5 - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

Here is my quick and dirty comparison between the Note 5 and Pixel 2 XL when using the gcam mod on Note 5. Most photos are in low light.

Hi,
Thank you for the comparison, great pictures. Can you tell us your rom (miui or other, which one) and gcam version please?

Whyred is pretty sweet when coupled with gCam

Xiaomi EU 8.6.28 (MIUI 10). I have played around with different version of the ported gcam app by BSG but the results are more or less the same. Try some of these:

I used this one for the comparison: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/MGC_5.2.025_1.apk

I cannot launch any gcam port on MIUI 8.7.5 What I'm doing wrong?

Have you enabled Camera2 api?

From the pictures, as expected Pixel 2 XL wins easily.

From my point of view, Pixel 2 XL wins by a large margin on photo 1, 2 and 10, the difference is less prominent on the other photos.

Note 5 All Day..
I Personally Prefer The Note 5 Pics...
Cooler & Brighter Pics... Sweet.
Thanks OP.. :good:

Hey, do you know if any of these GCam ports use both of the rear cameras on the Note 5? Thanks

Since the Google Camera is perfectly optimized for, well, their Pixel devices, it is expected for it to be better
I am sure that with an advanced GCam app which has noise reduction settings it can be tweaked to be closer to Pixel line (though can't match it really), and actually there are some versions, however I don't know how to use those settings (yet), but I might give it a go sometimes

There's no clear winner actually since the shutter and ISO speeds are never the same for any pair of pictures. Whichever one has lower ISO wins for that pair. The Pixel 2 XL has more noise and loses when it's ISO is higher.
In the first pair of pictures, the Pixel 2 XL has clearer and more details on the bottles because this phone was much closer to the subjects and therefore much higher magnification and much clearer rendering of the small details. But its noise is a bit coarser.

Note 5 pictures is ugly besides pixel xl2

Hello, is this redmi note 5 pro? If so, is it whyred or other version? since they have different cameras. Sorry i cant keep up with names xD, is "redmi note 5" Chinese version and "redmi note 5 pro" Indian version of redmi note 5?

Both phones do it great.
RN5Pro adds grain just a little bit on low-light photos, and colors are a bit less saturated in day-light.
Awesome comparison. Thanks

note 5 Do you have the best gcam for al? smoothly.

Why is the stock camera app so pathetic? ?

Wonder why can't OP or most manufacturers get the camera app right like Google does?
The stock camera on op6 is awful.
The camera has no wide angle and objects are too near than they actually are.
Normal or HDR is grainy work noise.
Pfa
Here's my picture. No edit, no nothing. I don't think that camera is pathetic..
Edit, forum seem to pixelate these over 7mb pics..
Let's see if this helps:
I didn't see the Panorama mode? Is OSS support this mode?
The OP6 is not known for his camera. Like every OP.
And in addition I agree that their stock camera app is far from the best seen on android.
Not that the needed options are not here. But this feels not ergonomic. Or maybe it's to early after having a new phone to say...

Which OSS version do you have ? In 5.1.7, Panorama mode is the last one on the bottom of the camera modes menu.

You can install many camera apps like Google. Search the Google Play store.
The stock camera on op6 is awful.
It's actually very good. Not GS9 good but close.
The camera has no wide angle and objects are too near than they actually are.
This camera uses EIS to alleviate shaky hands and walking shakiness. Stop doing drugs
Normal or HDR is grainy work noise.
There is some noise in dark shots, but nowhere near the previous generation cameras.
It's a very good camera.
Buy a pixel then? I don't understand people. This camera is just as good in most situations as the pixel camera and when it's not, it's damn close. If people are going to complain it's not as good as a pixel camera and it's that important to you then damn, spend $300+ more and get a pixel.
I'm not trying to be snarky but what are you expecting on a phone that is $300-$400 less than another phone? There is a reason you bought a $500 phone and not a $800-$1000 phone

Why not get a baby camera then?
Galaxy S9 is fantastic. Huge aperture, huge pixel size - perfect for moving objects and low light shots.
S9 is like $700.
S9 is a beautiful phone. Wait till Samsung.com unleashes its sales. The first sale was -$150 off on ATT branded S9 about a month ago. The second sale was -$200 off on Verizon branded S9 two weeks ago.
I bought the ATT one for a friend, requested and got it sim unlocked in 3 days.
Good deal.

I wouldn't call it "pathetic". I compare my Note 8 to my OnePlus 6 and have to say:
• The OP6 focuses better in videos than the Note 8. Tested by driving on average roads. All cars, signs, etc. were perfectly focused whilst the Note 8 really struggled focusing one single thing. Autofocus can't be turned off it seems.
• The OP6 stabilizes images and videos better than the Note 8. Tested by driving on average roads. OIS and EIS on OP6 is great. The Note 8 found its limits where the OP6 succeeded.
• More natural colors on the OP6 compared to the Note 8.
• OP6 only needs half the power to keep the camera running. The Note 8 really got hot in some situations, where the OP6 stood cool. Also tested by driving on average roads.
Sure: I miss the real 2x zoom on my Note 8. Night shots are better on the Note 8 too and even with some issues, the Note 8 wins. But it's a damn close win, because it should only be a matter of time, until good developers will do a dailydriver Google Camera port for the OP6.
And even if OP6 has its flaws: I love it more than my Note 8. Why? Find out by yourself.

I think it's more about the camera app, than the camera itself. Samsung allows you to change the aspect ratio, resolution, framerate, storage location, different grid sizes, gestures, and a dozen different modes including pro mode.
Hm. Grid can be changed up to the Golden Ratio. Framerate is also changeable: 720p with 480FPS and 1080p with 240FPS. Gestures... dunno. Never needed on my Note 8. Aspect is also here. The only thing missing: Different sizes for the photos. I'd like to go back to 12MP, because of better photos (seen from the technical side).
Sooner or later we will have a fully working Google camera. At worst after pixel 3 launch, but it will surely happen.

OP6 has a pro-mode, I just point and clicking so I don't use it but it's there.
here's my gripes
> Panoramas aren't stabilized, so unless you are a machine while turning around being completely still it won't come out good
> Videos focus in and out so much when there are moving objects it makes it pointless
These two things bother me a lot
This best camera I used, after comparing to mi 8, Zenfone 5z, s8 and v30. V30 has the best manual mode. The 5z before latest update had terrible videos, I was I had purchased it to replace my v30 and pictures only came very clear during daytime.

Gcam for redmi note 6 pro?

is there any gcam for redmi note 6 pro?
Hi, I've tried many different versions of GCam but this is the only one with a low level of noise (expecially in low light zones):
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/changelog288/
It works perfectly, except for slow motion. Please set Nexus 6p as input model for front camera to avoid colour problems
With Experience Pixel rom, it works pretty well, the slow motion works.
I disabled HDR + and remove motion.
Night Sight works, slow motion works.
Must put in input model "Front camera Nexus 6P" because if no there are color problems.

I'm using it and it surely is far superior in my opinion in terms of the image quality. Regarding using the app itself is not such a pleasant experience i.e. the app is subject to FCs and sometimes the photos don't get saved on MIUI 10. However, there are quite a few apks out there and you can choose which works for you the best
Does gcam work on miui?
Specially night shots.
Is there any cam app that can take those night mode shots? Like the photos in honor 6x for example?

Pixel 2 to OnePlus 7 Pro

Hello!
Considering to take the jump from my Pixel 2 to a OnePlus 7 Pro. I'm not affraid of the size difference (I've had a Nexus 6p) but I'm a little worried that the camera will be a disappointment. What do you guys think? Are the Pixel 2 camera better or do the 7 Pro beat it?
Skickat från min Pixel 2 via Tapatalk
The camera is a disappointment, I had the 2XL and now on the 7 Pro. I kept the 2XL for the camera. OnePlus isnt even close in terms of colors and contrast.

You can use Gcam and you are almost set...
I'm dropping my 3XL for the OP7P. Course, I'll keep my 3P on me as my work phone so I'll still have that camera.
P3 Camera > OP7P Camera..................but all other areas OP7P wins. So make your choice accordingly.

Question Is there something wrong with my X3 Pro?

The photos look amazing with Gcam, but the video's dynamic range and light levels look extremely bad.
Thought that was just how it is but when I did a side by side comparison with my rooted redmi note 4 (a whole 5 years old phone from the same company) the sharpness is lesser but the dynamic range and lighting look wayyyy better. I tried comparing it with some youtube reviews but I can't seem to find one in my specific use case (medium artificial light with a human in it).
Is it because the other phone is rooted? Is the x3 pro's camera hardcoded to look bad in video? I'd love to get some help on this.

Yeah. I have a bhima device so if this gets bricked I want to be able to replace this.
Gcams have poor video. For this better is stock cam. But you can always try some other cameras from playstore photon camera from github.
try using lmc 8.4 then apply the supported xmls

Question Coming from a Pixel 4 XL, will I be satisfied with photo quality?

Hello all!
I would love for you all to give your opinion on the OnePlus 9 camera in comparison to something like my Pixel 4 XL. My OnePlus 9 which I purchased on eBay arrives tomorrow and I am slightly worried that although the battery and performance will be a huge upgrade over my 4XL I'm concerned after reading mixed reviews about the image quality.
Coming from those who have tried pixel devices do you feel that the OnePlus 9 is in any way comparable to the pixels image quality? If you came from a pixel are you satisfied with the OnePlus 9 camera performance? Is it at least acceptable for someone like me who has children in a lot of sports in likes taking action shots?
I appreciate all of yours input and thank you for your time
My Pixel 3 XL took way better pictures across the board. The lack of OIS on the 9 is unforgivable. I use the GCam mod that was posted around here and that's at least passable but the only thing I like about the OnePlus cam over the Pixel is that it doesn't blow out reds. As someone with rosacea, it's nice that a minor flare up doesn't make me look like a tomato.

I just switched from the OP9 to a pixel 5, which i believe has the same camera sensor as the 4, and I think the photos on the OP9 were much nicer. Sure google has good processing but the image is so grainy on the pixel 5.
On the plus side my pixel 5 isnt crashing / randomly rebooting five times a day so i'm happy.
