Hi all,
I've had my note 3 (n9005) for almost 3 years now and it is has been perfect since then - no issues whatsoever.
I am mainly changing for a bigger screen as I grow tired of watching videos and clips on a 5.7" screen.
That's why I am here to ask for your opinion regarding this matter.
The Mate 8 seems like a natural upgrade as it is quite good - yet not as expensive as the note 5.
Also I'd be happy to get rid of TouchWizz and still have an SDcard slot - pity about the irreplaceable battery though.
I might also miss the stylus and the 4K recording as well, but what can you do.
BUUUT..I feel like the 6 inch mate 8 won't be of any help regarding my request for a bigger screen. These 0.3" might not distinguishable in my opinion.
So I am currently thinking about the 7" X2 and the 8" M2 tablet as they can make calls, have a bigger screen and fingerprint sensors - all the things I want in my new phone.
Unable to make a decision but atleast I know the following:
Mate 8 - flagship and would be the best all-around upgrade for the Note 3
X2 compromise between bigger screen and specs - but realistically the specs aren't way higher than my 3 year old Note 3
M2 going all the way to the biggest phone I could carry in my pockets(very important!) but the specs are still similar to the X2 and the note 3 - also more a tablet than a phablet - not a great camera etc..
What do you guys think?
Should I go with the logical upgrade or go for the main thing that bothers me and on which I put a great weight in all of this - the display size.
I went from note 3 to mate 8. My note 3 had the zerolemon 10k mAh battery, and I can tell you the mate 8 battery doesn't disappoint. Always lasts me the whole day and still got plenty left. This includes playing coc. I think the fast processor in here actually make that game not so battery hungry. Some issues initially with google contacts etc, but everything is fixed without having root. So far I'm very happy. For me I just need to get use to such a slim phone as compared to the note3 with the huge battery.
I have the X2 and the Mate 8. It really depends on what you prefer. I prefer the larger screen on the X2 but it's a little tough to pocket sometimes. The X2 fits in my pocket but you really can't sit down with it in your pocket or else it will bend a little. If you're at a wedding or club or anything like that it's a pain to carry around. It's great at home for anything web browsing or media consumption. My fiance has an M2 it's pretty much a tablet so it's definitely too big to use as a phone unless you're sitting at a desk. The Mate 8 has all the bells and whistles and the fingerprint scanner and having LTE here in the US is beneficial. I'd go with the Mate 8 first at this point. You can always pick up an X2 at a later date as they are inexpensive.
I went from note 5 to mate 8 with no regrets. You can't beat the performance and battery.
For those pull out your phone to quickly take a photo moments, would you consider the Note 4 to be ahead of the Mate 9?
I do. However after all the praise I've seen, I'm left thinking that surely I'm doing something wrong. Why am I completely unable to duplicate some of the photos that I've seen people take from this device?
I'm admittedly a complete novice, but from my limited time and experience with my Mate 9's camera, it seems to almost always come out second best to my Note 4. The Mate 9 seems to need near perfect conditions, while you also need to find the right setting (in a hay stack of unlabeled & thoroughly confusing settings), while also needing a steady hand to really to make it shine. Which is entirely worthless to me in any real world scenario. Unless of course I plan on shooting people doing a mannequin challenge anytime soon in the near future. Unrealistic. Don't get me wrong, the pictures are acceptable but they definitely aren't as good as what the Note does with ridiculous and with unwavering consistency. Would really like some input as I'm struggling to understand how a 2 year old device, which doesn't even require that you change it's settings, comprehensively seems to mock whatever the Mate 9 is able to throw at it.
I've only used the standard setting so far, but I've not been disappointed with any pictures taken.
One thing I have noticed is that it will get a sharp focus very much closer to an object than the Note 4 could do.
Have you got the latest update? That is supposed to improve the camera.
I have a Note Edge which has the same camera which is quite good but not quite on par with the latest flagships. My Mate 9 is supposed to arrive in two days. I'll do a comparison. Some random thoughts that come to mind is that they both are f2.2. The resolution is better on the Note 4 or Edge screen than the Mate 9 so it may be best to compare pictures on a computer screen. The Mate 9 did have a software update which appears to improve quality.

I'm waiting mine this week...now I own LG V20 DUAL SIM...i have kept photos from my last phones like Mate 8,s7 edge,Note 7 and V20 so when it comes i will test to see....
Anyone thinking of migrating to the Huawei Mate 9 from the Note 4 I can honestly say don't hesitate. This phone has blown me away!

I second that. This just the best phone around..
So has anyone ordered a Note 8 yet? I have Mate 9 (since Jan '17) and its awesome, but and it is a big BUT, that AMOLED display!! No doubt, that Samsung has some of the best displays in the business.
Everything in Mate 9 works as expected, the finger print reader is super fast, the battery life is amazing generally speaking. It charges fast, the UI is responsive. The camera is half decent. It just works.
I wanted to started a conversation around the idea, if it is worthwhile moving from Mate 9 to Note 8 ? Or perhaps wait for Mate 10?? Yeah lets throw that in too!

I wait for V30. Huawei Mate 10 with IP68 is my favorite too but I need Knock on and Mate 9 not have this function. Amoled not important for me. Photo quality, IPxy and knock on are more important for me.

I'm waiting for Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, those are the only two phones that are worth waiting, the S8 and Note 8 have nothing to offer.
I just switched from a Note 4 to the Mate 9 and love it. Yes there are some drawbacks but its nothing a little big of tweaking cant fix for me anyway. I looked at the price of the Note 8 and was like NOPE...Was on my 2nd Note 4 with the eMMC issue and didn't want to spend $1200 plus tax for the Note 8. Picked up the Mat e9 for $749 taxes in (Half price!)

I crave the AMOLED screens on the Samsungs. That would actually make my Mate 9 complete...
Came from the Note 4 to the Mate 9. Still have my Note running S8 ROM port. I have considered the Note 8 but, the battery life for one would be less than the Mate 9 which is absolutely stellar. The price is another issue. The wrap around screen is not for me on the Note 8. I like a firm solid phone, too. The note feels good but very delicate if dropped. I'm staying with my Mate 9. I went through a period of thinking maybe getting rid but nope, it's my right hand man. Probably the best phone I have ever owned. 128gb, 6gb Mate 9.

I though i was the same, but the Mate 9 screen is great as an IPS LCD, however if u still want AMOLED, Mate 10 pro is the version you want, shame it will be 1100$ if rumors are right.

There is no phone that serves as a true upgrade over Mate 9, in fact the Mate 9 is better than all flagship in terms of battery life and performance.
Someone tested the Note 8 on ppsspp emulator, playing Tekken DR and it worked poor as on my S7E, on mine Mate 9, it runs 60fps solid and Tekken 6 as well, that shows that Samsung is throttling the device on purpose via DVFS, another reason to stay away for me.

Totally agree the battery aspect, since no flagship of 2017 came anywhere near 4000mAH battery.
The accu is me to small, this is the main reason for me to buy huawei and no edge displays.

I'll wait for the Note 9.
The Mate 9 is too excellent to give up just yet.
Even the Matte 10 can wait for the 11
I went from Note Edge (the first one) to Huawei Mate 9. It took a little while to adjust plus I still miss the pen but I find that as time goes on I have really grown to like the Mate 9. Battery and speed and memory are top notch. There have been several good updates with camera improvements. I'm sure the Note 8 is a great phone but I really hate the idea of a 18.5 to 9 screen. It appears that the Mate 10 will now go to a 18:9 screen. I'd rather Huawei keep the same aspect ratio of Mate 9 and maybe slightly increase diagonal. Regardless, I'd rather wait to bump up to a Mate 10 than purchase a Note 8, especially if Huawei continues to improve camera.

I'll get the Mate 10 Pro probably, or Mate 10 if price will be really 1100$, nonetheless i know many people that stormed on the S8, and quickly got back to the Mate 9 never to look back.
Just today i played Angry Birds 2 and Tekken 6, so smooth, no performance issues, while both lagged, with Tekken 6 being unplayable on the Note8 and S8+.
If you have another last years flagship I'd say get the note 8 because it has the latest hardware. If you have the mate 9 now I wouldn't switch, this phone is just so great, amazing camera which really invites you to play with the settings in pro mode.
It has great battery life, I play alot of elder scrolls legends on this phone and it's allows me to play for hours and hours. My screen on times swing between 9 and 10 hours. Pretty impressive I would say.
I came from a nexus 6 so the Amoled vs lcd debate I can understand. I do prefer lcd tho.
OK, it doesn't have the true blacks and color saturation that Amoled has but it has great color reproduction and best if all, no navbar/statusbar burnins, hooray! This thing also gets very bright in daylight so it's very usable in direct sunlight.
I would say, swap this device only for the to be revealed mate 10.
Huawei is known for improving its phones year by year. The mate 9 was a good step up from the mate 8 as the mate 8 was from the mate 7. I'll be guessing it will be very speedy, have a great battery life and a great screen, Amoled or even lcd. The camera will be improved the most I think, this Leica coop has been working out great for Huawei and the camera's improve with every new phone. The p10 plus has a decent low light camera, guessing the mate 10 will be better in every aspect.
Time will tell, my next mate device will be a mate 11 tho, can't wait to be 1 year ahead of this one.
VALUE, that's what I'm after
Is it "better" I guess depends on what you want out of your device.
"Better" can be described as faster, more power, or simply a faux feeling
of "better".
Personally, I think most smartphones are OVER priced, for MY value.
That's why I don't buy a new phone when they are released. I "wait it out".
Typically, phones have a bug or two, be it software or hardware, when released.
I WAIT until a "new" version is announced and ready for release, then, start watching
for the price of last years new model. The Mate 9 was (USA) around 900 dollars when
released. I bought one this week, for $449.00
I find that if you buy the LAST of the so called new one, when another new one comes
out, I get a better value for my money. Granted, 99.9% of cell phone manufacturers
are late/never update their phone firmware. But, at least for the last 3 Huawei phones
I've owned (Mate 2,8,9) have been very stable with the firmware they ship with, so, for
my use, it doesn't matter. I don't play games, 3d anything, but, I do a TON of talking
(around 2,000 minutes per month), text, web (work), video, mp3's, streaming. I don't
turn it off at night, runs MONTHS between reboots, great life, so the version of firmware
doesn't bother me. But, I don't think the "higher end" phones, so to speak are a good
value, because when you look at build costs, of even the super high end devices of
around $300, but command over $1,000? That's nuts! Personally, I think it is because
the fashion designers/hipsters have taken over the industry. Now, what's the first thing
you hear when someone announces/displays a phone?
Oh! Look how slim, colorful & stylish it is! We hired bla bla bla fashion designer to design
the phone. (Um...how much "style" can you make out of a rectangular slab of plastic, glass &
metal??). Phones are overpowered, have way to many megapixels on the super tiny camera
sensor and on and on, to justify the price increase. As long as consumers continue to buy
into it, can't blame the manufacturers that are catering to it.
Me, I'm kind of like the old story of the two bulls on top of the hill, overlooking a heard of
cows below. The young bull asks the old bull, hey...how about we run down there and screw
some cows. The OLD bull says, son, why down we creep down there SLOWLY and screw em
all.
Sometimes slow is better, for me, especially when it comes to spending my hard earned money.
I had a mate 9 earlier in the year, got a note 8.
Note 8 has a great camera but i just do not like using it, it is absolutely not worth the price they are asking. Rather use my 7 plus or Xz Premium over it. XZp would be my DD if the camera didnt suck.
My p10 plus can barely hit 3 hours SOT so it sits on the desk, huge disappointment. Should have kept the mate 9.
Going by the language used, it's coming!

On Play Store I see only the old Camera app (compatible only with Nougat, for this it isn't with the Nokia 8), version 6.0090.07, while we have the newer 8.0110.21 on 8.1
On Nokia 5 and 6 with Oreo there is already the new version (8.0240.40, if I am not wrong) with the new UI and an improved algorithm with higher performance in low light condition, but without the Pro mode Lumia-like and the Imaging Suite.
During the keynote they said that the Pro mode will come on all Nokia with Zeiss optics (then also Nokia 7 and Nokia 8), I think there is only to wait, I hope not late April.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco will put beside the Nokia 8, will not replace it, having very different targets and prices. I believe that both devices will receive the same and identical support, sharing much of the hardware.
So far they have made us wait for a decent camera app just to not announce the news.
Probably on our might be missing the Imaging Suite, depending on the AI and I think also from ARCore, with which the Nokia 8 is currently not compatible.

Bad move by HMD IMHO, they are doing a Lenovo and releasing too many phones and spreading the development team too thin.
Not bothered about OLED (screen burn is a bad thing, i do not want to be careful how i use the screen, if i want it full blast i should be able to without damage happening).
Not bothered about 6GB or RAM (meaningless sales gimmick, zero use in a phone).
Not bothered about the 835, i've already got one thanks.
Not bothered about Zeiss optics (meaningless sales gimmick, it did absolutely jack for the Nokia 8)
I am bothered about the lack of a headphone socket (Bluetooth audio on the Nokia 8 is utter gash and it is an unfixed OS problem not a hardware one)
Certainly not bothered about the price!
Nokia should have released it later in the year with an 845 as the successor to the Nokia 8.

I wouldn't compare they to Lenovo/Motorola, they proved to be on two different planets as software support.
Now they have a complete range, covering all price ranges and all tastes. The development team will have no problem, as it has not been so far, thanks to the closer collaboration with Google. Among other things, in this case, Nokia 8 and Nokia 8 Sirocco will share virtually the same firmware, having the same hardware...
They clearly said that the Nokia 8 Sirocco is for those who want that extra premium fealing, for everyone else there is the Nokia 8. They only occupied the highest price range pending the Q4 to present the new high end device with Snapdragon 845.
End of the OT awaiting the upgrade of the Camera app

You seem to have misunderstood what i meant, it was more a cautionary tale rather than a direct comparison.
HMD have a only a small team and are doing a spectacular job, the Motonova reference is to them stating in the past well we only have a small team for development blah blah blah yet they release 87 phone a year stretching everything to the max and going from one of the best to one of the worst when it comes to software updates.
HMD, don't do it, don't go the same way, in such a short space of time you have become the third largest supplier of phones in the UK, don't knacker that up with saturation and dilution.

Only a few elements change, but the hardware platform is almost the same.
As for the camera, they will have just different "drivers" and the app will be able to adapt to different hardware, as it already does now, since it's shared between all Nokia devices.
According to NokiaPowerUser, hdm has confirmed all the news of the new Nokia for the Nokia 8 and some even for the other devices of the "first" generation (support like Android One, even if there is no formal certification, face unlock and new Camera).

Having decided to join the Android One program for all present and future devices, they will have no problem, even with a small development team, IMHO
Lenovo was the downfall of Motorola, its golden age ended with the influence of Google....
I think that offering a complete and rational range (now it seems to me that), is better than offering less choices, with equal care and support.
My Nokia 8 doesn't feel intimidated by the brother dressed well, on the contrary, it's happy because it will soon improve considerably
Returning in topic, no ETA for the new Camera on Nokia 8, Sarvikas said that they are working on a date.
I don't think it will be released as a simple update through the Play Store, I think there is to work on the firmware and in any case seems to be the release of a new huge software update (face unlock and perhaps the implementation of the AI that I believe requires the installation of the appropriate Qualcomm and Android framework, maybe even necessary to make the device fully compatible with ARCore).
You can't trust Juho sarvikas! He is a liar! He promised September 17 bootloader unlock coming to the 8! And..... Nothing comes, he promised to publish the source, and...... Nothing! I don't trust him anymore

If so, how is it? The mate 9 is close to perfection, but the mate 10 pro is really attractive.
My Mate 9 still works fine. So I would keep to use it.
I was at best buy earlier today and played around with the mate 10 pro for a few minutes. The build and tall aspect ratio was OK but for some reason I prefer the 16:9 mate 9. The oreo update on the phone feels almost about the same. The kirin 970 does feel a little snappier and smooth but overall I would wait for the phone to be under a few hundred dollars. It wasn't like your getting a totally new phone for the money just slightly better specs and the screen was good but not like a night and day difference coming from a mate 9.
Yup, most of the reviews of the Mate 10 Pro were 'meh' The oled screen is the biggest change. The chipset is not all that much faster. When I played with the Mate 10 at BB, I really didn't notice any great bump in speed. My Mate 9 is a year or so old and runs great.
Nope, sticking with the 9...I've only had it 6 months.
I think the Mate 10 Pro is a real downgrade. I don't know why this Pro Version even exists.
No audio jack
No SD card slot
Glass on the back surface
Bad White through Oled
2:1 Display, though this is a matter oft taste
No autofocus in the front facing camera

And no wireless charging that could justify this decision. I'm not saying that wireless charging is a breakthrough, but at least you know why do you have glass instead of metal on the back of your phone.
