So last night I had to reinstall one of my H918s. I usually just debloat / customize my own ROM, but I have started using Alpha ROM by @i95swervin. Even then, I have a zip that I flash that makes some tweaks that I like, and that saves me time.
Well I was in a hurry, and didn't have quick access to my zip, so I used the phone with a "stock" Alpha ROM.
Wow .. talk about sluggish. I can see why some people have complained.
This morning I decided to try and figure out why, and noticed that logd was enabled. When you root and debloat, you get a massive amount of errors that are logged. If you run adb logcat you will see the massive stream that starts scrolling down your screen.
Unfortunately, disabling logd causes SafetyNet to fail.
For me the performance is worth it. If you don't care about it, you can disable logd by:
* Boot to TWRP
* Mount system
* Use file manager to navigate to /system/bin
* Rename logd to logd.bak
There is a "proper" way to disable it by changing init scripts, but this is by far the easiest.
If you need to pass SafetyNet, or if you need logging again, just rename it back.
-- Brian
Good tip. You may also have noticed my follow up post in the "Is it still worth buying this phone in 2018" thread. In my case, I discovered that a good part of the sluggishness I had reported was being caused by Magisk in i95swervin's ROM. Once I got rid of it, the ROM immediately started to perform so much better. Between disabling logd, removing Magisk and turning Window, Transition and Animator scales to "off", the phone finally feels premium again.
I don't experience any of this on pure stock ROM.

@BROKEN1981 If you are talking about a stock non-rooted ROM, the logging isn't an issue. Even a stock ROM that is rooted and not debloated doesn't have the issue if you disable rctd. This becomes an issue when you start debloating a lot of crap.

Ahh ok. Only things I deleted out of system was Lookout and a few Google apps. That's probably why I never noticed anything. Also have RCTD disabled.
Right now I'm looking into deleting a few LG apps like LG bridge, switch, account and backup.
Thanks for the heads up on the logd file. I might end up having to rename like you suggested.

The quick and dirty way to tell if you might be getting performance issues is to run adb logcat while the phone is booted into the OS.
If you are getting a few log entries every couple of seconds, or even a couple of log entries every second, then no, it isn't really going to help.
However, if you are getting pages of log entries every second (as in scrolling by so fast you can't read it), then yea, it is killing your NAND performance -- not to mention killing your NAND since they only have so many read / write cycles.
-- Brian
Anyway to do this without causing issues with SafetyNet? I have a couple of apps I like to use and google pay.
I am researching that now. It looks like older versions of Magisk will work without logd, but I don't have time to test right now.

Ok Thank you. Please keep us up to date.
Will it increase Also battery life?
IF it is writing a lot of logs, yes. Just disabling it if you aren't getting a stream of logs isn't going to do anything.
-- Brian
I totally understand. I hope you didn't think I was given ya sh*t
You may want to consider adding it as an option explaining that (for now) SafetyNet will be broken if they disable it.

i was thinking while reading the thread, if you move the file from /system/bin/ to sdcard/documents.,, that wouldn't trip safety net would it? your technically not your touching(modding) your system .. sorta speak.
Was there any progress with magisk and getting safety net working with this disabled?

I was able to seemingly get it to pass SafetyNet by replacing the logd binary with an empty file via a Magisk module. The issue is if you enable MagiskHide with logd disabled it kills performance. Because of this Magisk auto disables MagiskHide on startup if it detects logd is missing.
So it's actually possible that SafetyNet would pass even if you just delete the file normally and re enable MagiskHide, I haven't tested that, but again not recommended because of the performance issue.

Im Running RR6.1 on my H918ARB1 and it is so smooth comparaed to stock roms that going back feels like installing a beta. There is something definitely wrong with LG. I just leaved RR on it. I have a Gcam that works and the battery is surprisingly very good. There is still no wifi calling or Volte but those are compromises im willing to live with for the sake of better performace and battery life. And best of all is That I have not experienced any throttle when hot. when lineage goes official and RR follows it is better to be AOSP.

That is exactly the point, Some missing features yes, but we are talking 8.1 vs. 7.0 WITHOUT Support from lg. No thermal throttling and smoothness and speed. Heck yes I'm a fan of that.
And I surely hope you are not talking about my PR flag, because if you are a racist you should have no part in this community.

There wasn't any reference to race in my post, my phone is super fast and smooth on stock as well and all the v20 features work flawlessly where as on Los stuff doesn't work and you have to jump through hoops, dl additional apps to get basic functionality. But I digress this isn't a los thread, and your post was off topic to begin with.

Ok, So I decided to get this kernel out and played with a little more. Had quite a few people test it with success, so I'm gonna release it, but of course, I have to release it with the standard disclaimer.
I nor any of the contributors to this Kernel will be held responsible for anything you decide to do on your own. By downloading and flashing this kernel, you are knowingly accepting the fact that it may not work for you. If you should have any issues though, we are more than happy to help you to try to get it working.
The Battery Tweaks Have Been Removed Until They Are Updated... I Have Permission To Use Them, And I WILL Change Them, But I Will Also Make Sure I Don't Forget Credit This Time. My Apologies For The Last One.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------**CREDITS**---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rodderik - For helping me out from the start. We've been working on kernels since day one of the source drop, but I also had ROM stuff to do and he just kept his kernel wheels turning. The mans a Genius.
Supercurio - For paving the way with voodoo sound.
Mkasick - For the video and keyboard patches.
Paiyne - For putting all my tester kernels through the gauntlet and letting me know what needed to be fixed right away so I could make sure it was a stable release.
All my other testers - I wouldn't be where I am without you guys. So thank you all
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------**CHANGELOG**-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
..::Spartacus v1.0::..
*Added A2SD*
*Added A Few CPU Scripts For Verification, And For Setting Frequencies*
*Overclockable To 1.3Ghz*
*Added A 1.3GHz, 1.2Ghz, And 600MHz Step*
*Added Camera/Video Fix By Mkasick*
*Added Keyboard Patch Fix By Mkasick*
*Undervolted A Little, But Not Much Because Of The Battery Tweaking Scripts*
*Added Voodoo Sound By Supercurio*
*Added Rodderiks Malware Patch*
*Raised The FPS Cap*
*Added All Scripts Needed For A2SD*
*Added My Custom Backup And Restore Scripts*
*Built From Source*
*Removed Battery Tweak Scripts Until I Update Them*
Yes.... I will make sure credit goes to everyone else that worked on them too...
NOTE: My custom backup and restore scripts are a work in progress. I know for sure that the backup works (I've had many testers confirm this), but I've changed the restore script, so hopefully it works for you. To give you a few features of what the script does, here's a brief rundown.
Backup
1. Backs up /data/app.
2. Backs up /data/app-private.
3. Backs up /data/data
4. Creates a compressed .tar file of backed up /data/data to conserve space.
5. Creates a folder on your sdcard for easy access labeled "backuppro".
Restore
1. Restores /data/app from sdcard to phone.
2. Restores /data/app-private from sdcard to phone.
3. Uncompresses .tar file and restores data to phone.
4. Once restored, the apps show back up in your "downloads" section of the Market again so you can still update when an update is available.
5. What to restore is optional. Whether it be both apps and data, or one or the other. You have the option to choose what you want with simple "y" or "n" responses.
When running the backup.sh script, you may see "No such file" or "No such directory", don't worry this is normal, it is still performing the requested actions. Also, before you backup or restore, the script will tell you exactly how much space is being used in the folder on your sdcard. This number does not show up until after the first time you run it obviously, but after the first time, it will show you exactly how much space you are using for apps & data.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------**SCRIPTS**---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here Is A List Of The Scripts Included In The Kernel Flash And Their Description Of What They Do
(All commands are typed here exactly as they should be typed into Terminal Emulator following "su")
1. 1200perf.sh - This script can be run to quickly change the CPU Frequency to 1.2GHz Max and 200MHz Min Frequencies while on the Conservative Governor.
2. 1300perf.sh - This script can be run to quickly change the CPU Frequency to 1.3GHz Max and 200MHz Min Frequencies while on the Conservative Governor.
3. backup.sh - This script was created custom by Team Viper to backup your /data/app & /data/app-private folders to your sdcard, as well as your /data/data folder.
4. restore.sh - This script was created custom by Team Viper to restore your /data/app & /data/app-private folders and your /data/data files back to your phone from the sdcard.
5. cpufreq.sh - This script sets your governor to 'Conservative' and your frequency changing thresholds to 50/10.
6. getfreq.sh - This script can be run to tell you your current CPU Frequency.
7. getgov.sh - This script can be run to tell you your current CPU Governor.
8. verifycache.sh - Force /system dalvik-cache on /data instead of /cache if it is not large enough.
9. maxperf.sh - This script sets your CPU to 'Conservative' while setting your Max frequency to 1300MHz, and your Min frequency to 200MHz.
10. minfree.sh - This script sets your phones internal memory killer to slightly more aggressive settings.
11. tweaks - This script allows you to change certain features of the phone. With it, you can change your Hardware Accelleration, Stagefright Media Player, JIT, and Dalvik Heap Sizes status to either Enabled or Disabled. It prompts you to make a backup first, or you can not use the script.
12. Malware Patch - Rodderick wrote up this script to prevent anyone from accessing your phone or causing virus like issues. Thanks Rodderik, we love your tight butt.

SimplyLock Lockscreen Replacement
Just wanted to make sure everyone was aware, even though they are posted in my thread, I am NOT taking credit for them. Just a heads up.
NOTE: All the applications that I have listed here are FREE in the market. I simply placed them here for convenience. If you like the apps, feel free to go to the market and purchase the donation versions if available.
You can also download SetCPU from the Developers page on XDA found here or you can get it from the Android Market. If you like the app, show your support for the Dev and purchase it, it's cheap, it wont break you .

I was going to, but i hate defending myself for honest mistakes... I removed any trace of anything people could yell about. I built this personally from source myself, and people can see that i did it. That way there's no questions. And for all the people that said stuff in the other thread... If you don't like my work... don't download it... seriously... developing for the Samsung Epic turned from being fun for me to living in a daytime soap opera... This may be the last thing i do.
Nothing against you ecooce... i've got no beef with you... I agree 100% with the statement you made, what he did was uncalled for... but credit DID need to be given... I just wish i would have been properly presented with the opportunity to fix my mistake before anything happened. I would have gladly done so.
I'm sorry, i don't mean to rant, i just feel like i need to present my case to everyone. If you've been a loyal follower of Viper or not, i never intended to do wrong. I understand that when ViperROM first started, yeah, we have had a few things that didn't work, but our ROM is just like anyone else's out there today... I've personally never heard of anyone needing to replace their phone after running one of my ROM's... I'm not even making the current release, and TPhillips busted his ass on it, but i'm sure someone will say something about it. ViperROM has advanced since we've started, and we're not backing down because some of the other dev's dont like us. We don't care. Again, i apologize for not giving credit to begin with, it was an honest mistake and i gladly fixed the mistake by stating i was sorry.
Here's the bottom line. I Credited other people in my thread, so it's obvious i don't have issues with crediting people. I apologize for my mistake. If you don't like me, or any other person of the team, you have the freedom to choose not to install this. To everyone else, Thank you.

As someone thats around you guys alot (the team), I've got to say people on here don't understand how much work gets put into these things. Even though he borrowed some Scripts, as you can see here, the kernel doesn't need the scripts at all to run, and is an amazing kernel WITHOUT the scripts, with just everything BT made HIMSELF.
The dudes helping our Epics while ACTIVELY serving our country EVERYDAY as well, and you don't see him complain or ask for anything in return. Imagine yourself being in the military all day and than dev'ing all night. I sure as hell know I'd be tired. But he still does it anyway cause he enjoys it.
But as you can tell, it seems that enjoyment is slowly being taken away from him, which is horrible. Hasn't anyones momma on here taught them the "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?".
Dudes a great guy yet I haven't seen much respect shown toward him on here and its kind of sickening. I mean no disrespect towards anyone on here, but anyone that's got something against BT or anyone on the ViperTeam, take it up with them privately from now on. You may also take notice that they ViperTeam doesn't go around implying they're better than anyone like some other groups you see around. If you don't like their stuff, they don't care. Just don't use it.
And a problem I saw in the other thread was people saying the kernel was breaking their root.
People, if your on Syndicate, Their root is in their KERNEL instead of their ROM. Therefore if you flash a kernel that doesn't have the root files, you will lose root on the ROM because the root was in the kernel. So stop thinking its the kernels fault when your on Syndicate and this kernel makes you lose root.
Don't know if it works but you can try flashing the kernel than one-click-rooting if you want. That may make it work. Other than that, don't keep saying "I'm running ACS's rom and this kernel makes me lose root! rage!!$%%percent%[email protected]!"

Keep it up BT, trying er out now.

Btw, whats the swap partition for? I have a2sd setup from baked snack, but I don't remember it having me make a swap partition...what purpose does that serve? (Just out of curiosty)

Well, I removed stock apps, I inserted a lot of cm7 stuff, I added over-scroll and CRT, I fixed gallery drain, I removed all 4g related stuff (it doesn't work, so why the extra space ), I added some things to init.d (they wont work until we have support), I changed the build.prop to be nexus-ish (Netflix shows and works), I did a bunch of other random stuff.
I RECOMMEND AFTER YOU FLASH (IF YOU DON'T DO THE * ONES SOME THINGS WONT WORK):
*Download GPS status and clear a-GPS status
*Download CPU Master or SetCPU and change the governor to what you want (if you want ondemand and it is already, just change to conservative and then back)
-not necessary but really recommended- Download a SD tweak app and change the setting to 2048
*Download battery widget and place it somewhere (fixes battery issues)
*Go into settings-display-animations-all

This is RFS-only. There is no EXT4 support - believe me, ACS tried to hack it in there for you, but it's just not happening right now. Other devs are welcome to try, but ACS doesn't believe it's possible at this point. However, the kernel is rooted, and contains Busybox for your device usage pleasure.

Init.d support would really be nice...
I need some help wiff teh AOSP lock...
Not familiar with how to remove CIQ
YOU NEED RFS (CWM 2.x.x OR CWM 3.0.2.5). Only tested on CWM 2, don't trust CWM 3, IDK why.
Open source licenses: http://source.android.com/source/licenses.html
Flash the rerfs first
Bugs:
4g is non functional.
Phone only powers on while unplugged (plug in after boot). Still charges, just doesnt boot.
This leak is from ACS's leaker and I hold no legal responsibility regarding the ED12 leak, I am unaware who this leaker is, but I just modified what was made available for speed and stability.
Support is discontinued until ee03 rom is done.
I'm so glad to see someone working on this!

He already talked about this, look through his thread's.
My request would be to take the theme from Simply AOSP ROM and port it over to this new rom. Just the basic's. not all of it. so it's more gingerish.

I needed suggestions
My suggestion would be to wait.
(Taken from ACS's OP on ED12)
Known Bugs
4G non-functional
GPS non-functional out of the box - WORKAROUND: get GPS Status from the Market; reset AGPS status (works with wireless networks off)
Wake lag present
Does not boot when plugged in and powered off, unplug to boot
Temperature sensor readings are incorrect. You may see interrupted charging due to bad battery temp readings.
ED12 is really an Alpha if anything. There is a reason other Dev's haven't quickly been updating their ROMs to Gingerbread. It's not ready.
Not to mention there is no source code, no kernel support, etc..

My suggestion would be to give him suggestions for a ROM he is making, not be a tool. A lot of people want to use Gingerbread now regardless of the issues. I, for one, don't use 4G (not in my area) and don't use GPS. I'd rather sacrifice a little to use Netflix right now.

I agree to waiting. Just for the fact that so much is non-functioning. However! Just because a few won't be jumping on board doesn't mean you shouldn't DK28 on the bit. Who knows when actual GB will be coming out.
That's a link to TouchWiz 4.0 ported to the Galaxy S. I heard they got it working on the captivate and vibrant as well.

You're right.. how improper of me to recommend waiting to avoid problems. As requested here are my suggestions..
Suggestions
Fix 4G
Fix GPS
Fix the wake lag
Won't boot if plugged in, recommend fixing that as well
Oh and fix the Temperature Sensors so the battery will charge properly (Anyone else realize that's a huge huge bug?)
I'm not trying to be pessimistic and more power to him or anyone else who makes a ED12 ROM but it's in bad bad shape.. and I'd never recommend building a house with a foundation of mud.
Just saying..

He's not ONLY using the ed12. he's using the Nexus S CMDA deoxodized 2.3.4 stock ROM also. So he could come up very high actually.

My suggestions:
1) ignore the trolls, they have nothing but negativity to add
2) ignore those that say wait, if you are offering the time, why wait, some people may want even a flaky release to play with
3) add as much black to the theme as possible to help save battery since you said you couldn't do kernel work
4) post updates on your effort a lot, even if it is a "not yet ready, no eta"
Questions, though they may both be a kernel thing:
Will this work only with CWM 2.5.5, as it would only be RFS?
Is it possible for WiFi tether to work with this?
This build should work with the Netflix app, correct?
After all, if the bug list ONLY includes, no 4G, no GPS, wake lag, and battery temp issue, that would make for a pretty good play around with build! Heck, that's a lot better than other "play around with" builds I have tried out in the past!

Flashed this ROM on my Relay. The ROM's pretty customizable and neatly done. Has a custom kernel which let's you tweak the CPU and GPU parameters. However my battery life hasn't been stellar by any means and since I'm using it in India, I have to check the roaming option under the Mobile Networks option. Also, adfree wasn't really doing anything at all. The host file got updated and still the ads weren't being screened. The ROM is no doubt amazing. But these are small issues that's kinda making my ROM experience not so dreamy. Any kinda help and opinion is welcome.

Yes, I've resorted to this as well. Though, sometimes there's a few slip ups. Not too sure as to what the problem is. I read in a couple of forums about the success people have had with adaway on KITKAT. Which is surprising as they do the same job of hosting the hosts file. Maybe Kitkat bypasses or maybe overrides this to get ads back on the apps. Anyway, ATM MoAB's been the most successful.

Thanks a ton yourself...i'm all about helping the community.
I'm rooted on stock with twrp, wanted to install some tweaks for the reboot menu and status bar and I know we need xposed for it.
Can anyone guide me as to how to install it? I've read tutorials but wanted to ask the people here. I'm new to this phone.

good info, im just not sure why people use xposed as opposed to a custom ROM with the features that theyre looking for baked into the ROM
Because sometimes, there are many things "cooked", and if I need 1 or 2 mods, then I don't need to deal with all the bugs that came with custom ROMs.

thats pretty fair, but i dont really get many (if any) bugs with custom ROMsif installed correctly. Im not bashing xposed, i just think that custom ROMs are the way to go for my taste
plus, in my experience, using xposed on a stock rom is better, you don't have to deal with any bugs

It can screw things up fast and often! Haha. I use XPosed purely for boot manager and greenify. Those are safe on any rom. Unfortunately there are so many modules you can use on your phone that aren't meant for it. If you're not happy to screw things up to learn what works than it can be a huge headache. Lol. I gave up screwing with many of the modules. Oh. I also use it for no ads and background play for YouTube.

As I've seen... I'm using the s5 for a second phone while my first is a note 5 which is the best phone I've used, after I had to give away my note 7.
And also that the camera on the s5 is not bad either... I just don't like it when it asks me to hold the device steady while it's taking a photo...

no, im on resurrection remix nowadays and very much miss the TW camera. I ran MOAR for over a year and wanted to try out the AOSP ROMs that everyone was ranting about, and i rather enjoy several things about RR, but the camera is rather lackluster on AOSP. TW ROMs have access to the stock Samsung camera, which is awesome!! I really havent found much that just WOWs me about AOSP vs MOAR other than the fact that MOAR isnt being updated anymore (yes, you jsut witnessed someone remind themselves about why they decided on something that they had totally forgotten LoL) I spent a little time finding out if one could port the stock TW cam to AOSP, but apparently its not possible

It's like an Ota... But I wiped anyways and it states that if you opt out of the beta program you'll need to wipe to go back. If you stay in until the beta program ends though it'll just Ota you to the official without needing a wipe

Impressions so far:
- scrolling is noticably smoother, whether it's web pages or news content on the glauncher.
- battery seems to be better than Pie. The standby is definitely better, but I should note that I used a battery recalibration app right after updating (for the first time).
- the device seems to stay cooler under normal load. For whatever reason, it got hot doing some basic things in Pie and the battery life drained quickly.
- no bugs so far, all of my apps still work from what I can tell. Surprisingly stable for a first preview.

Works fine, but when i tap on last button in settings "tips and support" app crashes. System-wide "dark" theme is not dark but pure black. Thi is annoying for my eyes, dark grey is much better for me.
Chase mobile app crashes after a couple min. Can anyone confirm the same?

Where is the system wide dark theme?
Enable: adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 2
Disable: adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 1
For now toggle is missing
May be 3 for gray ?
Dark mode is not worth yet. Cant use Google photos. And maybe few other apps which are not discovered yet .
Try battery saver dark mode and check if you can live with google photos (side menu, etc)
If you can then go for it.
Otherwise not even a single crash yet on android Q beta q. Its a good experience so far.
Can be used as Daily driver.

No not your device..., It freezes sometimes like once in a day but see its just a beta 1 i tend to ignore that 1 time a day thing.
And if you think its too buggy then try a clean flash or formatting your device once. It helps.
