Is there an already rooted oreo rom I can flash onto my rooted mate 9? - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

I have a rooted phone with a rom that isn't being supported anymore but it actually works great. I just want to update to oreo so is there a rom I can flash from twrp that is already rooted and ready to go? I saw a video of a how to install oreo 8.1 but it's just music playing with someone showing the menu option and no installation instructions.

The OpenKirin ROMs don't work with TWRP. Moreover, TWRP is risky -- it is much easier to recover a phone using the stock EMUI recovery than with TWRP. It is probably better to eliminate TWRP (which will not eliminate your rooting) by flashing the stock ramdisk), then use Magisk if you want to take advantage of root for installation of unapproved apps. I'm not an expert -- this is what I get from reading threads. Now that I'm running OpenKirin (Carbon), I haven't bothered to install Magisk again as I don't need it, but I appreciate that there are things you can do with it.

Last night I installed Oreo from a custom nougat rom. My wifi tether was working before now it isn't so I'll have to figure that out and maybe re root etc.. Is OpenKirin Oreo?

Yes, OpenKirin is Oreo 8.1.0, with security patches in Carbon 3.1 of July 2018. (The OpenKirin site currently has Carbon 2, which has the June patch, but you can get 3.1 from the telegram support group, which is what I'm running. It will show up on the OpenKirin site sooner or later.)

Can I go from stock 8.0 to OpenKirin? Since it doesn't use twrp I'll have to read how to do it.
Edit: Where do I find OpenKirin Carbon? I didn't see it in the rom section here.

There are instructions at the site as well as downloads. The current version of Carbon, 3.1, can currently only be reached by going to the telegram group, but I found no bugs in v2.

Flashing MIUI rom via TWRP without bricking

Hi Guys,
Got my Mi4c unlocked and rooted running cm14 however, when I try and flash an MIUI 8 rom via TWRP the device goes into a bootloop.
I am new to Xiamoi devices (Nexus user) am I missing something? Is there a patch to flash after a rom to prevent bricking?
I'd really like to try MIUI again but don't want to go through the hassle of unbricking my device and reflashing/rooting it.
Many thanks!
p.s Does MIUI 8/CM14 support f2fs?
You have to flash Developer version of the rom which is not out yet. The otherwise-rom package will always lock your bootloader and wont let u access the recovery after (thats why bootloop). CM14 supports F2FS, MIUI8 is still upon the old ext4.
I have the same brick as yours for now and I'm downloading the old 6.12.8 developer version bootloader flashable file to get out of this mess. MIUI is nothing fascinating and they break something with every new update. I'll go back to MOKEE until Android 7 gets stable enough.

Thanks for your reply. That surprises me that there still isn't an miui 8 developer ROM out yet for this device. Probably shall never come in that case.
Good to hear that f2fs is supported by cm14 though. Will certainly be running this once I receive my new cases to replace the girly pink cover my mi4c currently houses

Download and flash: https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4302781&d=1508010356
You should now be rooted with Magisk.
Make sure you have TWRP 3.1.x from the twrp thread

Is it really that easy? i have mine rooted with TWRP 3.1, i can flash that file and I'll have magisk? I'm on the same HW/SW version as the OP.
since the Oreo is coming out, will I need to flash stock to get the Stock Oreo update when its released? I assume so. I am new to the Mates and they seem to have a much different flash method/path than the Nexus 6p and HTC devices i have done in the past. I'm kind of leery to pursue Installing ROM's and Magisk (never used it yet) but would like to. Any tips or links to detailed instructions for the Mate flashing? I cant find, what I feel, to be detailed instructions on XDA.
thanks

If you're rooted with SuperSU or Phh you will need to restore your stock boot image before flashing Magisk,
this can be done by downloading your firmware from http://pro-teammt.ru/firmware-database/ then extacting update.app and opening it in Huawei Update Extractor where you extract BOOT.IMG.
Flash it using fastboot flash boot boot.img.
As long as you're using firmware B182+ (Loop device support) and TWRP 3.1.x you can install official Magisk/SuperSU.
Oreo will be a full firmware so it shouldn't need to verify any partition, meaning you will only need to restore stock recovery.

What to avoid to stay rooted, keep custom recovery etc.?

I unlocked the bootloader and rooted my honor 6x with magisk. Now I'm confused, what could cause relocking the bootloader, or non-functional twrp, or no root…
I'm most interested, if there are any dead ends – no way back to unlocked bootloader etc. (security patch level by google?).
My former phones did not receive any updates – so that "problem" is new to me
OTA Updates – I see, that one needs to un-root and go back to stock recovery for OTA-Updates. Do I have to avoid them? (Does bootloader get relocked, can I simply reflash twrp and magisk after?)
Custom roms – I get, that one can reflash (older?) stock rom – does bootloader stay unlocked?
Oreo Chinese/Indian – rootable? Stays unlocked? (Bonusquestion: downsides re-branding from European L21 to Indian/Chinese? Possible to go back to L21?)
anything else to think about, to preserve unlock/root-goodies etc.?
All your questions have the same answer. Bootloader cannot be relocked simply. Only you can do that or if you use HWOTA 8 to rebrand/ rebrand in general. In order to receive OTA updates, you just need to unroot via Magisk manager, reflash stock recovery and you are good to go. However there is a much simpler method available If you want. For that download the latest Full-OTA for your model from Firmware Finder app and then flash it through Hurupdater. More detailed instructions in the relative thread. Just search for Hurupdater. And lastly if you want to flash a custom ROM go for OpenKirin. They are the easiest to flash and have stock camera. Or you could Upgrade to Android 9 by flashing Pixys for Hi6250 devices by Askucio Droid. Detailed instructions in relative threads.
Thanks!

…so I concluded that I should not worry too much about losing "root-goodies". Thanks for the infos! =)
As for OpenKirin – they kinda confuse me regarding versions – there's omnirom beta 3 & 3.1, resurrection 3 & beta 2, and lineage 5 – but they're all based on Android 7? Or Oreo?
Oreo. Always use latest version. And all of them are stable so don't worry. Also all of them are different ROMs each with its own advantage.
Resurrection Remix: Best in terms of customization and features. Good battery life. Recommended.
LineageOS: No Customization. Best Battery Life of all.
Omni ROM: Sweet Spot between LOS & RROS. Customization and battery life though Customization are not as good as RROS and same goes for battery life.

Can't backup stock rom in TWRP. Scared to flash a new one.

TWRP installed fine. I try to backup my stock rom and it says unable to unmount system and unable to locate boot partition. The log isn't even in my sdcard. What can I do?

You don't really need to backup your stock rom, you can download your stock firmware and then flash via adb. See https://openkirin.net/user_guide/how-to-download-stock-emui-firmware-for-your-device/
I've been running OpenKirin's Resurrection Remix for months without even having TWRP installed since the versions we have here all aren't working properly for the EU model
Check out the other guides on that website - if you're using a supported device you can simply flash via adb

If you're talking about the firmware then follow the guide, it tells you which one you need.
If you're talking about the custom roms on their site: Those are different roms so you have to make that choice yourself.
LineageOS is pretty "vanilla" without a lot of options, ResurrectionRemix has just about every option you could think of and OmniRom is in between those two.
The choice is yours - just make sure to always use the latest version

Well for the firmware, there's 3 different links for my Full OTA and they're all different sizes. Could I still flash custom roms and stuff even though TWRP is being weird?

I don't know why there's 3 links - if the guide doesn't help you sort it then I suggest you join the Telegram group and ask there
If your device is a EU model then there is no fully working TWRP available. Personally I would NOT risk flashing anything through it, esp. since flashing via adb is so easy
Join the Telegram group (link on the website and in my signature), I'm sure someone there will have the answers you need :fingers-crossed:

How do you install TWRP forever even after flashing OTA and magiks? On Andorid 10?

I already know how to install the unofficail TWRP firmware for my Pixel 4a but it goes back to the custom roms recovery or stock recovery almost every time even after installing ramdisk. What's going on?
Since you are on Android 10, I don't think there will be anymore OTA updates because I think they are only for android 11 at the moment.
To get TWRP to "stick", you probably need to install a custom kernel that has ramdisk built into it as shown in this guide:
[GUIDE] UNLOCKING, DOWNGRADING TO A10, TWRP, ROOT
Hello, I'm posting this guide for those (like me) who can't do without TWRP on their device. I'm providing only a step-by-step explanation. Credits to @nikamura for his kernel and TWRP...
