Turning LG V20 into Android TV box - General Questions and Answers

How do I power the phone directly from the wall plug without using the USB-C port? What power adapter would I need and how would I connect it?
Or how do I output video (wired) and charge the phone at the same time?

I had done a quick search and located the following 2 threads with conversations specific to Wireless Charging for your specific device.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3486488
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3717069
It actually took me 2-3 minutes for Google to locate these threads that's located within the Dedicated Device area specific to your device.
That may be the solution you might need for this question...
Good Luck!

Thanks, I never thought of wireless charging as an option as I thought it might overheat the device while playing videos.
And unfortunately it turns out LG won't support it after all https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/help/updates-wireless-charging-cover-t3531026
But I did find something interesting on that side http://www.instructables.com/id/Add-Wireless-Charging-to-Any-Phone-Using-the-LG-V2/ which might lead me closer to what I'm hoping for... I need to figure out if I could connect a charger instead of the wireless charging receiver board and make sure it wouldn't burn the phone or the display connection connected through USB-C or both...

My daughter has a ZTE device that requires the USB-C cable and, as a matter of fact, out of all the cables, devices, etc... I have in the house, that ZTE device is the only one that requires the USB-C.
Fortunately, the Dollar General Store here sells inexpensive USB-C cables for $5 that (thankfully) worked on her device.
I am not a fan of these manufacturers changing the cable types, I believe, for profit so people have to buy new ones.
I hope that you can figure something out and Good Luck!

[Q] USB OTG Case

Hi XDA,
I had a question on USB OTG. I'm trying to make a case that utilizes USB OTG so that it can read Microsd cards. I realized that it would take a good amount of battery consumption. My question is, would a simple on/off switch/circuit fix this problem or is it more complicated than that?
Thanks,
Darth Yoshi

A few other threads have noted that products like the Meenova take up a noticeable amount of battery.
I was thinking that if I could get a prototype working, I could kick start this. Although it may be hard to design different cases for different phones.
Doesn't make any sense that it would use a noticeable amount of power. Maybe its a poor product. Test this yourself with any otg + usb stick

Alright, Thanks RootSU
Will test.
Ive been wanting not a case exactly but a usb otg that is solid (not cable) and it comes out of the micro usb and immediately bends back... then immediately bends up (like a u shape) with a micro sd slot so the sd card actually slots down, running parallel to the back cover...

I like that idea a lot and it could be adjustable so it would work with cases but the problem I see here is that it wouldn't be balanced if you set your phone down.

[Completed] Remotely Control GS5

Hi everyone. This is my first post but I've been using this website as a resource for years. I'm struggling to find something and I hope you can point me in the right direction.
I just bought a Galaxy S5 right after it came out. Within a matter of days I managed to shatter the screen. I was working on my car and must have left the phone on the trunk/spoiler. I ended up driving away. I came home later figuring I just left it in the house... but I found it in the street with a broken screen. The phone amazingly works just fine, except the screen is completely unusable. I'm figuring out insurance right now...
In the mean time I would like to be able to check my phone and at least reply to anyone that has text messaged or called me and let them know that I will be waiting on a new device to come in. The phone is rooted, but USB debugging was not enabled when this accident occurred.
I read a couple of threads on connecting and controlling your phone over usb. The main requirement I can't get past is that most of them mention that USB debugging must be enabled for this to work. So I'm at a loss there. Another route I have been looking into is installing a VNC client from the google play store. Then connecting to that via my laptop. The issue with this route is that I cannot turn the remote server on.
I have seen a few threads but I have not been able to find one that allowed me to remotely control my phone without USB debugging enabled. That is my biggest problem.
If there is any possible way control it without the screen, please point me in that direction.
Thanks
Thanks.
Hey there. Sorry about your screen. Normally we'd point you to a thread to help but this is quick.
Most remote control solutions need some kind of verification or configuration, so my best suggestion would be to get a MHL adapter to get HDMI output from your phone. Galaxy S3 and newer require the newer 11-pin MHL so ensure compatibility if you're ordering online.
The HDMI will show what the screen would and as long as your touchscreen is still working you can operate your phone that way.

That's unfortunate...
If you have a spare phone, I would put your SIM in there - you won't get any of the already-received messages/etc, but at least you can get and respond to new stuff.
I recommend replying to the [SUPPORT THREAD] The Galaxy ~S5~ All in one support thread!**NOOB FRIENDLY** or create a new thread in the Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting section.
I'm sure there's someone smarter than me in there that will hopefully have an idea. Maybe there's an S5 dock that will let you use a USB keyboard/mouse or something? (Bluetooth would require pairing, which requires touchscreen interaction)
Good luck!!

UPDATE: I happen to have some accessories on-hand, so I just connected a USB keyboard to the (Samsung) USB OTG cable, and connected that to my S3 and it responds to input - at least if Samsung Keyboard is your default input method (it prompted me, as I usually use Flex T9). Can't swipe to unlock with the keyboard, but if you can at least get your phone unlocked it might get you somewhere.
Since I assume you can't see your screen in a usable fashion, you'll still need to combine the OTG keyboard/mouse with HDMI output to get both input and a viewable interface. It may be different on your S5, but at least on my S3, this requires a MHL adapter that has a micro USB port that accepts the OTG adapter and a powered USB OTG cable so you can plug the power into the USB OTG, and plug the USB OTG into the MHL adapter, and plug the MHL adapter into the phone.
I tried the Samsung OTG cable (P/N ET-R205UBEGSTA / UPC 635753495546) - it is not a powered USB OTG cable - with the Samsung MHL 2 adapter (P/N ET-H10FAUWESTA / UPC 887276848013) - and it did not work.
Just the USB OTG alone worked, but in your case that wouldn't give you an interface to see.
So definitely look into either a dock with USB and HDMI output or a powered OTG cable combined with MHL adapter with USB input.
Make sure the MHL adapter has a 5-pin USB, otherwise the OTG will definitely not work (the Samsung one I used does, but I can't verify since I don't have a powered OTG cable on-hand).
According to this thread, Samsung Smart Dock Multimedia Hub, the Samsung Galaxy Smart Dock, P/N EDD-S20JWEGSTA may do the trick! At least people reported it worked for the S4, so I would hope it works for the S5 as well.
I should note here that the additional testing I did above is not normal for XDA Assist... XDA Assist is not a troubleshooting forum. But I just happened to have the stuff handy so it was quick test.

Ok sweet thank you. I will take a quick trip to best buy and see if they have any docks on hand. I do have another phone that I could use. It's not mine but I'm sure I can borrow it for now. I can't get the sim out the s5 though. It feels like it's glued in place. I also have a macbook with bluetooth. So if I could some how enable and access the phone without configuring it... I would be able to pair through bluetooth.
If your local Best Buy has a Samsung Experience (most non Mobile BBYs have them) hunt down the Samsung rep and see if they have additional advice and ideas.

Also, for SIM removal I have found it convenient to get a piece of removable tape (Scotch Magic - the not-so-clear one) to stick on the SIM, then pull the tape gently sideways. Otherwise when you try to push it with your finger you usually just bind it in the depression it sits in.
Good luck, and if you have further questions or need additional assistance, please follow up on the appropriate links above.

[Completed] Charge from AC while connected to Computer USB

Hi.
I recently got an old computer set up that doesn't have Wi-Fi, or an Ethernet cable running nearby. I was delighted to find that I could instead use my Note 3 to provide it with internet. The problem is that the phone doesn't change nearly as quickly on usb, and it appeared to be discharging when I was using it.
The question is, is it possible to make a micro usb cable with two usb male ends, one that goes into an adapter to charge from the wall, and the other to go into a pc to transfer data?
I looked around and apparently no one shares this twisted fantasy, so I figured someone on here can tell me whether it's at all possible.
Thanks in advance
Hi
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist. It's probably possible, if you split the cable correctly then theoretically it should work. I can't find anything relating to this on XDA though, but you should be able to find technical schematics for USB cable wiring conventions pretty easily on the interwebz.
Good luck!
Thread closed, thanks.

Sony Xperia Z2 magnetic charger problem

Good day,
i wanted to load my Sony when I realized that the magnetic charging cable is not working properly. It starts to load and then stops again and starts again. And all the time. I would be willing to disassemble my phone if necessary.
I attached an example how it looks.

HALPPP - need a usb type c cable without data transfer

HALP - I need a usb type c cable without data transfer....in other words, a data-less type c cable that will only charge the phone. I've scoured the internet and can't find it. Maybe I don't know what to search on? Does this exist? Can I just cut the four data wires in any type c cable? Thanks

The following is a list of 3 options in order by cost (#3 being the least). All 3 are not actually real expensive but, as with any product, the cost all boils down to where you purchase it and the manufacturer.
1) A USB Condom. This is a type of Dongle that fits into a USB port and then the cable is connected to it. So, when plugged into any PC, it will prevent any data exchange and limit it to charging only.
The following is just an example of this:
https://www.amazon.com/Syncstop-The-Original-USB-Condom/dp/B01N0HCJOW
2) USB Type-C Charge Only Cable. This is self explanatory. Just a cable that's made specifically without the Data portion.
The following is just an example of this:
https://www.amazon.com/Braided-Charger-Charging-Samsung-6P-Black/dp/B07FVM6GNR
3) USB "Data Blocker" Adapter. It's an effective form of the first option that's made in a different way.
The following is just an example of this:
https://www.amazon.com/PortaPow-3rd-Gen-Data-Blocker/dp/B06XGM6LJB
I can't honestly recommend any of the above because I don't use them and I'm sure that there's other options out there but, I'm just providing, what I feel, are the best 3 lower cost options I know of.
I wish you the best of luck!

Man I can't thank you enough. I'm going to get the data blocker, but my concern on that one is that I'm not sure if it will allow for max charging. I'd like to also find a charge-only cable, but Can you confirm your link on the charge only cable? Seems like it is a regular cable? Thanks so much really do appreciate the help!

Try to locate the data blocker that is USB 3.0 type.
The Type-C Connectors has the additional pins that that's available only for the 3.0 style USB ports.
I could be wrong for using the USB 3.0 reference...
Just look in the descriptions for its ability to keep/maintain the Fast Charging capabilities.
The links are only to provide an example of what I was referring to regarding the options provided. I know that there's better performance options out there.
Good Luck!
