[Q] Can "SIM card not inserted" be a software issue or just hardware - General Questions and Answers

Hey everyone!
I need some advice from an experienced member. More of a theoretical issue - can a phone not recognizing a SIM card be a software issue if the wifi is working?
I'm having some trouble with an old phone (S4 active ATT I537). I managed to flash it back to stock and played around with it for a few days, rooting, a ROM etc then restarted it one time and now it will not recognize the SIM card. It's driving me crazy I tried cleaning the contacts but I'm about to just sell it as is.
-Same SIM works in an S4 I337 right after I take it out of the active and put it in
-Wifi works on both phones

G2X won't recognize SIM card

Anyone else experience issues with swapping their SIM from their old phone into the G2X? I have reseated mine from my N1 into the phone 3 times, and each time I boot it says I have no SIM card. Pulling my hair out!
I went from an N1 to the g2x and i had the same problem so here is the deal...
the g2x is a 4g phone and it required a new sim card version so i had to trade in the sim card that i have had since my i got my razr in 2005...
so disclaimer to anyone who buys the phone outright, you have to have an updated sim card... just go into tmobile and they will give you one...
mines wont check for sim card at all it keep saying no service even without a sim card it usually say no sim but it just say no service can someone help plz plz plz
Fyi make sure it is a corporate store. Otherwise it could cost ya $20. Customer care might even be able to mail you one...not sure. If your near Chicago I would just give you one of my extras.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I reused the sim from my N1 and have had no issues but it was probably a newer version sim since I just got it beginning of last year.
If you have an old T-Mobile phone lying around, try inserting your SIM into that, and using it, then re-insert it into your G2X.
Alright I opened it up and it looked like the antenna cable was a bit frayed near the tip, I attached a few pics. It was connected though so not sure :/

I have the same issue.
Mint condition G2X does not detect my sim card reads "error while trying to connect to network"
I am running CM 7.2 I have wiped everything and reflashed still no luck.
Add one more to the pile...
I also recently began having this problem, but my device previously worked fine.
I have tried Restoring to Factory V21Y with Mar 11 Baseband
Flasing a GB Based ROM & Stock Kernel
Flashing CM9
Flashing CM10
Entering *#*#INFO#*#* Phone Info and modifying frequency band (No Go).
At one point I was able to read the Phone # from the SIM card, but couldn't get a lock on Netowkr. I can visually detect T-Mobile and ATT in Mobile Networks.
I have tried this with 4G Enabled SIM Cards and older T-Mobile SIM Cards.
I have tried Simple Mobile, Straight Talk, & ATT SIM Cards.
I have tried using None APN's, the TMo/Simple Default APN's, and Modified APN's for Straight Talk & Family Talk.
No avail.
Any ideas?
I had the same problem. A new SIM card fixed it.

I gave my friend my old G2x because she was switching from AT&T to TMobile. She went to the TMobile store and got a new SIM card and her old AT&T number transferred to it. It works on her old iPhone but when I insert the SIM card on the LG G2x , it keeps saying 'no SIM card inserted'....do i need to flash a certain baseband on it and/or setup a custom APN for it? I am on the stock ROM thats rooted...
Any help is much appreciateed
Sorry for not replying until now but I rarely visit here anymore. My G2X had a bad Sim card which a new Sim fixed. I just had to wait until the network could authorize with it.

[Q] My Unlocked Samsung Vibrant losing network

Hi guys, new to ths and apologies if I am asking something already asked but I tried to check and didn't see anything similar. I was send a samsung galaxy s vibrant from the US and it was unlocked in my country (Zimbabwe). The phone worked fine for a while and then started having a weird problem. The phone loses network or does not recognise the sim card but if I restart the phone whilst the USB cable is connected into a computer then it reads the sim card and also gets network. Any ideas what the problem might be or more importantly how to solve it?

[Q] do i need the sim card to root + rom a phone?

basically the GF was super frustrated with her infuse....
constant loop reboots, gps radio awful, calls dropped, etc
so we tried to work with ATT - got new battery, got new phone
at this point she's fed up and put her sim card in her old blackberry
trying to help her out i'll put a different rom/kernel on the phone to see if it'll help -
but do i need her sim in there to do so? i can't imagine it is necessary but figure'd I'd ask before I brick it
Nope, you will be ok without it.
thank you very much

Curios: Intermittent “Not registered on network" - anything other than bad SIM?

I’m rooted using qkster’s Heimdal 2.3.6 for almost a year... very few problems.
Lately I have a problem that occurs intermittently upon reboot.
1 – It shows a grey SIM card icon near upper right (not the blue sd scanning that always happens)
2 – Cannot make or receive calls, get message “not registered on network”.
3 - Can't use SMS or data
The only way to fix it is to reboot. Some reboots are successful, some not.
If successful, works fine until next reboot.
If not successful, doesn't work at all until next reboot.
The behavior only changes during reboot.. I guess maybe that’s when SIM card info gets red into memory?
I tried removing/reinstalling SIM card. Pressing on it during boot (other phones apparenlty have looseness of SIM card)..no change.
When the problem was really bad (9 out of 10 reboots come up bad), I swapped SIM cards with my daughter. **The problem followed the SIM card*.... Two successful reboots on my phone with her SIM card, Two unsuccessful reboots on her phone with my SIM card. Swapped my SIM card back into my phone and again unsuccessful reboots 9 times out of 10.
I called AT&T, they said go to their store and they’ll give me a new SIM card for free (which I’m planning on Friday)
To me, “intermittent” SIM card is a satisfying answer. It doesn't seem that software problem would create intermittent behavior like this. I haven’t really tried flashing new modem or playing wiht IMEI recovery stuff. ... I’m not tremendously familiar with those and don’t want to mess anything up when I have a success path to just swap SIM cards.
At this point I'm just curious and hoping to go into AT&T armed with more info.
Do you think is't a bad SIM card? Or is it instead maybe something simpler that could have been fixed without swappig SIM card?
And did my rooting the phone or other activities contribute to it?

you can try flashing a cwm-modem and then retry
you can try flashing one of zen's new kernel and retry
a factory reset and odin or heimdall back to stock and check for problems
sometimes it's the software corruption that reports the sim as invalid

Thanks qkster.
I'm thinking it must be the SIM because the problem followed the SIM to another phone and back.
I'm just not sure exactly what exactly is stored on the SIM and whether it could have been corrupted by my phone's actitivies and whether it's fixiable without SIM resplacement.
Again, just curiosity.

Np..sry I didn't notice that you had use the same sim and got the same problems on a different phone.
resolved
UPDATE - I went to AT&T today – new SIM card, phone works fine on three-in-a-row reboots. That seems to confirm bad SIM was the problem, although I don’t know why... seems like an uncomon problem for Infuse.
I asked the rep what might be the cause, he said it just happens every once in awhile.
It took me awhile to figure out.
Googling the error “not registered on network” gave nothing on Infuse forums (apparently it’s not a common failure... I’m just lucky).
Google search on that error led to lots of other devices including lots of HTC phones that had problems with the holder that could be corrected by inserting paper or tape as a wedge to put pressure on the SIM card. I actually seemed to have success with that once (because the problem was intermittent), so that kept me on that wrong track longer than I should have been.
Anyway, it’s here now for posterity for whatever future Infuser searches “not registered on network” and pretty straightforward in retrosepct. The key test to confirm of course is swapping SIM to another phone.

SIM 2 shows "No SIM Card" message on my Galaxy Note 10 although SIM is there and was tested working in the past.

Hi there, I am now facing the issue with SIM 2 not being recognized by my Galaxy Note 10. The SIM is fine as it works if I put it into SIM 1 slot, slot 2 does not seem to react at all. I've tested it working in the past with the same SIM card, just did not need to use it until now.
Question - is it possible that an upgrade from Android 10 (which I think was the OS at the time I tested the SIM 2) to Android 11 might have broken it, so could it be a software related issue, and not necessary a hardware fault? I pretty much haven't touched the SIM tray that much at all from the day I own the phone.
Thanks, please share your thoughts, much appreciated as I'm looking for a solution!
Facing Same Exact issue.. u figure out wat happened.. or just get new phone with proper 2 sim card capability
