Anyone else had unexpected restarts? - HTC U12+ Questions & Answers

I've had three unexpected restarts in the last 5 days, two of them when I wasn't actually using the phone (one just after I put it on charge).
ISTR this happening in the early days of the HTC 10 or U11, but it went away after an update.

What software version do you have?
Any apps that might be the cause?
I have the US unlocked running .617 and haven't had any issues at all so far.

I'm UK, unlocked, on 1.15.401.2.
Can't think of any apps that would cause a problem (such as?), and it's stock, not rooted.
Luckily, it's very fast to boot up, so not a major problem.

Can you try figuring out a pattern? See if it might be caused by something you're overlooking.
Maybe try pulling log files see what happen before it crashed. Adb tools from Google have logcat and a program I forget what it's called that lets you see all kinds of information from the device when connected.

Wait you really got version number 1.15.401.2!?!?
As far as I know, and see on my device retail software should be on 1.15.401.4!!
Sent from my HTC U12+ using XDA Labs

Theres a thread that has RUU posted on a Google spreadsheet.
It has 401.4 as a flashable zip. If you really do have 401 either try checking for an OTA update. Or down the zip from that thread. Backup all your data and flash the 401.4 using an SD card or OTG.
Maybe whatever issues you're having is caused by a bug that HTC fixed in . 4

I'm running exactly the same apps in the same way as on my U11.
I did look at Logcat, but frankly I can't make head or tail of it. I'm not familiar with Android internals - I was a C++ & Java developer until 10 years ago, but that was on corporate financial software

Heh - I just checked again, and it's showing 1.15.401.4.
It did restart last night, but unless it's stopped notifying of system updates, I guess I have to apologise for making a typo... (is there an easy way to check when the last update occurred?)
Anyhoo, HTC support are now following their script on it via email - getting me to run the diagnostics.

So you're running the retail version just as I am. Got the device for two weeks now and never had any problems regarding restarts. Let's hope this little glitch will be fixed with the upcoming OTA update. Shouldn't be long till it hits actually.

Yeah; I'm not too bothered really.
HTC support sent instructions to run the diagnostics for the charger confused, and the battery (which doesn't appear on the diagnostics menu!). They also asked me to "press on Volume up key + Power on/off Key holding them together for at least a minute" which doesn't work with the U12+ haptic keys... They also asked me to run it in safe mode for a day to see if an app is causing the problem; I can see the idea, but the phone is unusable in safe mode, so it's not so easy. I did ask whether they had a way to report the system logs, or other useful data after a crash/restart, but they just ignored the question.
I don't think I'm going to have much joy from them. If it only happens once a day or so, I can live with it.

Did you know that if you press the corners of your phone, while pressing with another finger from the back, it acts like a power button press. Means, if it's in a pocket of a tight jeans and it press and hold the corner, it makes a force restart. That's what happens to me a lot. Got now a harder case to prevent this.
Edit: I use a WWE Unlocked HTC U12+. Latest firmware.

Mine doesn't do that - at levels of force I'm comfortable with applying. It has restarted a couple of times in my pocket, which I thought might be due to the sensitive power button, but it's also restarted a couple of times just sitting on a table.

Restarting everyday?
You are happy paying a **** load of money and happy to put up with daily restarts.
No one should put up with that kind of major problem

Maybe I should have said I can live with it until the next update - if it persists after that I'll want a replacement. So far it hasn't restarted while in use (and not at all yesterday), so it's not been a significant problem. YMMV.
But you're welcome to jump up and down on my behalf [emoji6]

I would definitely put the phone through intensive usage to make sure it doesn't restart unexpectedly. First of all if it is hardware issue no software update would fix that.

So far, no further problems for a couple of days, despite unusually high temperatures and heavier than normal usage.

Mine did it yesterday, but it was in my shorts pocket. They're mesh, so I think it was pressing the power button, or it was the corners power cycle. Never heard of that before. Where did you hear that?

[Q] Why does my G2x keep shutting off randomly?

I've only had the phone for less than 24 hours and I'm ready to send it back. Someone help me out please.
My phone keeps shutting down randomly. I rooted, installed CWM (Yes the nvFlash), Installed Evils ROM from the dev section.
The phone shut down right before bed last night and it must have done it sometime through the night because I had to restart it in the morning. Today it turned off a couple of times and my logical thought was that it was the ROM.
I switched over to EaglesBlood 1.0.5 hoping it would be a little more stable. It took a little longer, but it still shut completely off.
Nevermind the battery life I just want it to stay on. I'm no genius, but I'm pretty decent with ADB and terminal if I can fix it. Let me know if I'm overlooking something.
this phone has several issues. check the rest of the forums. what you are experiencing is one of them and it only gets worse from here.....

I've read most of the issues. I was hoping there was a way to fix it. I talked to a customer service rep at the Tmo store today. He said there is supposed to be an update released by the end of the month.
I rooted so I never have to worry about releases. Usually Cyanogen and his team are all over this kind of stuff. (Cue G1)
I really wanna know why it's doing it and how to fix it.
You by chance have an app that flashes the home buttons as a notification? When I deleted that, my random shut offs dropped...
Is it shut down? Or is the screen black? I get the occasional black screen... if you hit the power button the screen gets a little brighter... if it's that you can just do a hard reboot, power+volume up

Still not working
Okay I think this will help out. I'm been trying different ROM's for a couple of weeks now in an effort to get this to stop this is what's happening.
1. The phone shuts off completely and you need to pull the battery out to get it to turn on with the power button.
2. The phone turns off during a call or during use and starts up again with the boot animation.
3. Shuts off while charging in the middle of the night or while on the car charger.
What app needs deleted or removed? How do I do it? I'd like to post the solution up for anyone having this same problem.

Dead Desire S - Any help?

Hi All,
My Desire S decided to die today for no apparent reason:
I had been browsing the internet before jumping in my car and switching on the bluetooth. I had been driving for about 10 mins when I got a call through on my cars bluetooth system, about 3 mins in to the call the caller disappeared even though the car said it was still connected.
I pulled over to check the phone and found it was frozen on the call screen. So I disconnected the battery and powered it up, but it could only get the the HTC splash and sound before the screen turned black and the unit became unresponsive.
A few more tries gave the same issue, so i decided to boot it into recovery to do a full wipe, this completed successfully, but the phone was still doing the same thing.
After removing the battery again the phone will now not turn on at all and does not respond to the charger (no led). I've tested another battery, but still no luck, and tried the bat from my DS in my sisters DS and it works fine.
So my phone is completely dead it seems. I should probably send it off to HTC for a repair, but the problem is that the phone is S-OFF and i have no way of getting it S-ON while it's bricked.
Can anybody suggest anything?
I'm not having much luck with HTC as my mozart is at the repair centre as we speak with a bootloader issue... I might have to choose another manufacturer in future
PS: It was S-OFF but running stock software
there is not much to say...try to remove battery and wait for a while...if issue still persist htc service is only hope

Thanks, i'll leave it overnight and see how it looks in the morning. Luckily i have an optimus one spare that has always served me well... It just does not come close to my DS.
I've just had a development!
When i plug it into my windows 7 pc it recognises it as a device "QHSUSB_DLOAD" but fails to install a driver for it.
Can anybody elaborate on what this is?
Thanks!

Afraid this is not good news...you'll need to reign the device and claim under warranty, I wouldn't worry of you made it soff they probably won't be able to tell, read the recent posts on the ext4 recovery thread as same thing happened to someone else

Shame the manual doesn't say so then!
Well i've got it booked in for repair.
Has anybody here had many dealings with HTC Repair, or Regenersis (the UK repairer)?
The guy I spoke to over email (i got fed up of waiting on the phone) about my Desire S was a complete retard. He sent me the same email 3 times in reply to me telling me to restore factory settings... Each time I told him it was not possible as the phone would not switch on...
He then told me that UPS could not pick up my phone for at least 2 weeks, this is despite the fact that I sent my Mozart in for repair last week and was told at least 48 hours. So I would have to find my own way to post or courier it.
Then he books the phone in and sends me the 'Tick Sheet' with the phone information and problem description and in the problem description box he wrote "HELLO"??? WTF? What sort of jokers are these?
At least the woman I spoke to about my Mozart was helpful, she actually gave a meaningful response to my questions, but even she got the problem description wrong, writing just "Reboot Cycle" which is way to vague considering the problem it actually had.

Display issues, wierd colorful pixel-noise AND phone unresponsive

Sometimes, after I wake up my phone from sleep the screen shows a wierd colorful pixely noise as shown in the picture, and it doesn't respond to anything besides the power button turning off the screen.
cannot post link, i(dot)imgur(dot)com/TrI3w(dot)jpg
Replace (dot) with . but I hope you understood that
(Sorry for the bad quality, only camara besides my phone was this crappy old digital cam, but it gets the point across)
Sometimes it gets back to my normal lock screen after leaving it to be for a few seconds, but more often than not does it kinda 'lock up' in this mode with me unable to do anything with my phone. Sometimes pulling the battery and starting my phone works and will allow me to continue work/browsing as usual. Other times (right now) it goes back into the 'lock up' right away. Aand it just popped back to normal, this took around 5 minutes, give or take.
I know that when the screen locks up my music continues, for I have listened to music with the screen locked up. I am not sure if my alarm will continue to work as I have not tested it. I can also turn the ringtone volume up/down.
It seems to 'lock up' after long periods of inactivity as I have previously put my phone to sleep and woke it without the issue arising. This was whilst I was chatting. I have not been able to recreate the 'lock up' on demand, aside for just leaving it asleep for extended periods of time.
I hope there is a solution to this problem, and I'd preferably not wipe my contacts etc. I have no idea how I can keep my data through a reinstall, so if I'd have to reinstall then if someone could link me to a thread that explains how to keep data would be awesome.
The phone is a HTC Sensation, 8 years old. This is what it says in the 'about phone' tab.
Code:
Model number
HTC Sensation Z710e
Android version
4.0.3
Baseband version
11.65.3504.00U_11.19.3504.29_2
Kernel version
3.0.16-v1.30.2
SebastianFM#1
Build number
HyperNonSense v1.5 (3.32.401.5)
As you can tell, the ROM isn't the regular HTC Sense ROM, so that might cause issues. I am currently unsure whether the kernel is custom or not.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated! I hope I can fix this problem.
PS I'm sorry if this topic is a repost of any kinds, I've done a quick search for some terms that came to mind but couldn't find a thread that fit my problem.

Well for starters, Google syncs all your contacts online so once you restore your phone you'll get your contacts back. To me, it reminds me of the same issue I used to have with my Motorola Cliq: systematic hardware failure. The touch screen is starting to go. Which is why only your power button works.
But before we announce the end of your phone, why don't you do this so I can try to help:
Download "GO Backup" and back everything up.
Reboot into recovery and create a backup from there.
Wipe data, cache, and system
Install Virtuous Inquisition (I'm familiar with the ROM and it can help eliminate the possibility that it's the ROM doing the damage)
Set up your phone and restore using go backup. Then Try to induce the problem one you reload all your things
After that, let me know what the end result is

I will do this as soon as I regain control over my phone. It has been stuck on this screen for 10 minutes straight now. It really feels like standard electronics failure, starting off small and only on minor occasion and ending in a big endless failure. ****.
There is no wipe system option in my recovery ?

Replying since I'm not sure you'd read my EDIT
Display issue still arises, which means it's an internal hardware issue isn't it?
Does anyone have any experience with opening it up and seeing whether there's a connector loose or something? As I think installing a custom ROM kinda voids the warranty so I wouldn't be able to send it to HTC for repairs right?
Any Updates?
My phone started doing this this week and is now in what seems to be a permanent state of evil pixel screen. Have you had any luck fixing yours? If so, how? Thanks

It was a hardware issue, contact HTC support and they'll hook you up with a pickup and return service. If your warranty still covers that at least.

I was flashing the new Viper on my nieces phone and didn't quite get everything set up the way she likes it before she had to go home so I had to restore her nandroid of Viper ICS and now she is texting me telling me she is having this issue. Can anyone tell me if they ever had this issue and resolved it and if so i guess i might resolve it when i see her next weekend by reflashing the ROM? All i can really think of is that in the viper rom you have the option under tweaks to let the screen turn on when a message arrives. Mine used to do the same thing every once in a while but it was somehow connected to my data connectivity jumping all over the place so i re-flashed and wiped caches which did the trick.
Hope you get the problem resolved for your nieces sake!
I'm having the same issue with my Evo LTE
The same problem with SGS2 / ICS 4.0.3. Any idea how to fix that please ? It is VERY annoying, cuz it drains my battery !!!

In my original post I was talking to the OP.
It's not a software problem on the One S, look at everyone else with the same problem.

If there are still people with this kind of issue,
I would recommend to check for "wakelock" usage.
As third-party apps can use "wakelock" to turn on the screen, there might be some buggy app which is using the feature improperly.
I had the same case before, turned out that "Naver Mail" app was using Screen wakelock to turn the screen on randomly.
As a solution, there is an app in Google Play called "Wakelock detector" which has a feature to show statistics of Screen wakelocks.
GooD luck
Random Screen On caused by faulty power adapter
I changed my power adapter for charging, and the problem went away immediately. I assume it was the result of either drawing too much power, or not enough to charge the phone. Anyway, there you go. Hope it helps! :silly:

Power button magically stopped working

Out of nowhere my power button magically no longer works. Kind of a huge deal since I use my phone for work a TON. At first I thought it was the ROM but then I rebooted into recovery and discovered it doesn't work in there either...... but by some sort of miracle though my phone magically boots itself up when I swap batteries in it....
I am rooted and running Beans 20.
Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

You can get an app called button savior from Google play that allows you to create on screen keys to turn off your screen.
Various xposed modules allow you to remap your physical keys. If you don't know about the xposed framework I highly suggest looking into it.
Furthermore I believe some custom roms have key mapping built in.

Yes I already got an app that will shut my screen off and lock it but what happens when my phone stops magically booting up all by itself??
Then I'm screwed.

My power button just started malfunctioning too. I'm on Odin barebones 4.1.2 stock and the problem persists.
It sounds like a lot of people are getting this problem. If you use that knowledge to your advantage, I've heard people convince Samsung it's a manufacturing problem and got it repaired outside of Warranty. The power button itself is sautered onto the motherboard, so unless you really trust a mobile repair company, best option is work directly with Samsung.
That being said, I'm going to look for an Xposed Framework module that can remap the power button.
I looked for one, didn't really find what I was looking for... selling mine on ebay now to pay for my new phone...

Wow. My power button just stopped working also.
My phone is stock.
I did replace the glass myself a couple months ago and it's been working fine until about a week ago. Was wondering if that had anything to do with it.
Interesting to see I'm not the only one having issues.
Kind of timely now that the S5 is coming out this week.

This is happening to a lot of people. I'm sure the s4 will start having this problem followed by the s5 after a year and some months. Im done with samsung phones until they start using different parts. Actually thinking about the next nexus phone and hack a msata drive into it with a custom vacume formed case. The only reason I haven't owned one is because of the storage limitation. I think a 200+ gigabyte msata strapped to the back would fix that problem.

Hey guys, mine originally starting messing up on Saturday, and then Sat night and all day Sun is was fine, and now it is doing it again. I even installed a new rom and it is still doing it so now I am convinced it is purely physical and not rom-related. What are you guys going to do?
I have the Wireless Phone Protection for my phone and am thinking about using that to my advantage to get a new device....question is I've never done it before. If I say I have a physical problem with my phone then won't Verizon want it returned? That will make me have to unroot it and bring it back to out of box state which is a big headache. What if I just say I lost it or it got stolen? Am I better off going that route?
EDIT: Also forgot to mention that along with these power button issues my S3 also will not reboot on its own. If I select Reboot (be it from the power button menu, notification pulldown, etc) it will just shut off and not reboot.....but if I yank the battery and put it back in it will then reboot to recovery. Same deal if I do a normal reboot, haven to yank and replace battery. You guys having these issues too?
So a couple of days ago my power button started acting wonkie as well. I would push it and it basically acted sticky. I would push once but it would register twice or as a long press. Either turning the screen on and off or bring up the reboot menu. So I did the xposed button remapping. Worked pretty well, but if I restarted the phone it would do a weird haptic feedback thing every couple of seconds before finally booting up.
So I wasn't satisfied with just living with it being a hardware issue. So I downloaded latest cleanrom to flash from cm11. I rebooted recovery and now it just vibrates every couple of seconds. Would not make it to twrp. It will get to cm Samsung boot screen but then just goes back to vibrating black screen. I took out battery and popped out power button but same results.
Any suggestions? Think power button can be fixed by repair shop or is it time to go back to my trusty droid incredible until I can upgrade.

It can be fixed. There is also a way of temporarily making the power button work but I don't feel like explaining it again. If you do some searching there are at least 20 threads that have the temp fix in it.
