T-Mobile WiFi Calling - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey guys,
I suppose I'm not purporting to have the step-by-step solution, but rather a potential solution should this be investigated by someone in the know? I'm trying to look up how to do this myself.
The only thing really holding me back from using this phone is the lack of support for WiFi calling. Otherwise, the recent phh-treble ROM has been entirely sufficient for me. I recently happened upon this thread on Reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/6yvu29/project_treble_and_wifi_calling/
It would seem that the only thing necessary to enable WiFi calling, you need a proper carrier configuration:
...T-Mobile uses a standard VoLTE / VoWiFi implementation working out-of-the-box in AOSP when the proper carrier configuration is included...
...It mostly requires the appropriate CarrierConfig vendor.xml overlay and a working AOSP build...

At first I assumed ROM developers would have to do potentially annoying proprietary stuff.
I'm almost wondering if a vendor.xml with an appropriate configuration could be ripped from a working device with WiFi calling (e.g., my old XZ1 Compact) and be repurposed for the Mix 2S.
Thoughts?

It's possible Xiaomi doesn't have enough US customers to enable this feature in the US. I've had 4 Xiaomi phones that I've used on T-Mobile--MI Note 3, MI A1, MI Mix 2 and MI Mix 2S and WiFi calling worked on none of them including the MI A1 which ran stock Android instead of MIUI. But MI A1 owners who ran LOS did report that WiFi calling worked on their phones. I'm sure it's doable but probably not as simple as copying an XML Profile from another phone. There is no option for enabling or disabling WIFI Calling in the Global ROM. The ROM you are running would presumably need to support WIFI Calling in order for it to work.

Which Xiaomi phones you have can work with Tmobile's Volte? I suppose Volte on Tmobile requires a B12 and Tmobile's authorization, maybe? Am thinking about buying A2, Redmi note 5, Mix2s or Mi 8 ...
Thank you!

Mix 2 and Mix 2S both have voLTE on TMobile. You have to enter in a dialer code on the Mix 2S to enable it though.

Thanks to Ulver for helping with this. So how will you know if you are connected to Volte? Does the screen shows the word "Volte" on the upper right corner when you are connected, like one of my xiaomi phone used in China when I traveled?
Anyone has Tmo's volte and wifi calling experiences with Mi8, Mi Max3, Mi6 or even Vivo nex and Oppo find x? I really like these phones and am considering buying one of them
PS it looks like Tmobile Volte doesn't require Tmo side's authorization or support, as many chinese phones that are not sold in the US have Volte support. Wifi calling maybe is now the only one that needs Tmo's bake-ins. Thoughts?

You can see the voLTE icon in the status bar. Unfortunately, WiFi calling is a no go.

I think Volte worked on the MI A1 as well.
If you use a signal app it will show you have 4G. If you don't have working Volte when you make a call the data changes to 3G until you end the call. If the data stays 4G while you are on the call then Volte is working.
If you use an MVNO whether you get Volte can be a crapshoot. I use Mint Mobile for my primary service. Mint Mobile does not officially offer Volte but I have always gotten it on a variety of different phones. Mint Mobile does officially offer WiFi calling but they can't tell you which phones it will work on. My backup/emergency phone uses SpeedTalk which is another T-Mobile MVNO like Mint Mobile but there is no Volte or WiFi calling.

My old Mi5 got VoLTE but no Xiaomi and Wificalling :/

It's so weird, my original MiMix had wifi calling, but the new Mix 2S doesn't, they removed it from latest MiUi's.

There used to be a way to implement WIFI Calling in the MIUI dialer but I don't think the feature worked for most people even after it was enabled. Hopefully they will at least put it back in the Global ROMs but people have actually been asking for WIFI calling on Xiaomi phones for years. I've owned a MI Note 3, MI A1, MI Mix 2 and MI Mix 2S and none of those phones had WIFI calling--although people did claim that WIFI calling worked on the A1 if you ran LOS instead of the native stock Android ROM. But the MI A1 is an Android One phone that runs stock Android instead of MIUI and it didn't have WIFI calling.

In Mi A1, of running stock Android One then just open the stock phone app ( play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.dialer )
Tap on three dots at top right corner > tap on settings > tap calling accounts > tap the sim ( service provider) and you'll get Wi-Fi Calling option.

My umidigi one pro does vollte And wifi calling out of the box.
It probably a feature they decided to leave out. And a deal breaker for me exactly why I have a umidigi and not a minute mix 2s now

That phone would have been my choice but I had to return it because the Umidigi needed charging 3X a day and I don't play a single game. (charging is fast, but I'm not always near an outlet and I didn't like the capacity meter -- it would say I had 10%, I'd presume I had a few minutes, and it would suddenly go dark). MBJBDC, has that been your experience?
I was impressed enough that I'll keep an eye on Umidigi in future but I ended up replacing it with a Redmi Note 5.
I can't enable Volte on the Redmi -- it's grayed out. (I shouldn't have been able to enable it on the Umidigi, technically, because I am ATT prepaid which doesn't include Volte or wifi calling).
If you go with the Redmi Note 5 in the U.S. be sure you get the whyred version, M180327sh, which has FDD LTE Band 2 in Addition to Band 4. No trouble getting FDD LTE at all in an area with few towers (once I made a bunch of settings changes). The Note 5 quality is fantastic -- apart from lacking a USB C port, better functioning hardware in general than on my Mi Max 2 -- supposedly a better Xiaomi. Even the camera was a pleasant surprise. But I am disappointed about wifi calling. If Umidigi can do it, why can't Xiaomi?

I have WiFi Calling working on Mix 2S with T-Mobile. Albeit with a Project Fi simcard in slot 2. Confirmed by putting phone in airplane mode, connecting to WiFi and dialing out using the "Hangout Dialer" app.

Not working, it's locked.

that's voIP

This phone does support WiFi calling.
It does not however support US carrier WiFi calling configurations, as the profile must be programmed into the radio for it. I have undergone extensive radio enablement, and cannot get it working.
Since Xiaomi doesn't sell their phones in the US, I guess we're lucky to even get the global LTE bands in there.
If you have high speed internet at home, get the cellspot v2. It's $25 deposit, and works great. I had to make that move unfortunately, but glad I did.

I know this is ao old thread but in case anyone else is having difficulty activaring wifi calling it works fine on all three of my xiaomi phones (redmi note 5, mi max 2, mi max 3). I have tested all three on ATT and TMO as well as safelink (tracfone) with att and tmo configured sims. it also works with Teltik (a tmo business reseller).
I actually thought it wasn't working because when I entered the provisioning menu using *#*#4636*#*# wifi calling is grayed out. However you can toggle wifi calling on and off with *#*#869434#*#*
(the option is still grayed out but you get a flashing message saying carrier wifi calling is turned on.) anyhow just turn data off and make a call to test. Although I have heard e911 had to be set up first, I can only presume the carriers did it for me since all works as it should.

Cann you tell us where you found those call codes? Is there a datasheet. That would be amazing :victory:

I'm sorry it was a forum post but I cant remember which forum. There are lots of Play store apps with codes ... Might be one geared specifically toward Miui but Ive used the general apps and quite a few of the codes work. Note: the codes only work with the stock Android dialer. It is too bad that the Xiaomi sponsored Miui forum is so useless for finding valid, current info. Even when you get results using Google to search the links are always dead (although most are cached in google and Yandex). Good luck!

WiFi calling enabled?

Anyone know if the US or international models have WiFi enabled calling? I am ready to switch from Sammy to Weiwei if it does. :silly:
No support that I can see on the international version (used in UK). VoLTE is there for Three here though (not EE).
No wi-fi calling, Wi-Fi calling is carrier specific and you're not going to find that on any unlocked phone

He asked about Wi-Fi calling on the mate 9, not band 12 or VoLTE which is what the link you posted is referring to, not even close to the same thing. The mate 9 does not support W-Fi calling, no way around it. Probably never going to have it unless they implement T-mobiles IMS settings. There are a few unlocked phones that support it, but really all that means is that they cooked t-mobiles settings into their rom, and if you read there are not really all that many that are actually certified by t-mobile mobile to actually work properly.

Yes the Mate 9 is not supported, but there are many "unlocked" phones that T-Mobile doesn't sell on that list that support WiFi calling on the network (i.e. Axon 7, Pixel, Nexus, LeEco S3, OnePlus, etc.). That was the point of my response......
ok, on my phone (MHA-L29/B197 EU version) i was able to set a link for W-Lan calling with Create Shortcut app! Search for "wi-fi calling" in app area "observe activities ->dangerous"!!

Dual 4G Dual VOLTE

Does oneplus 6 support Dual 4G standby and Dual VOLTE in India(i.e Two Jio sims simultaneously)?
According to my research, that would not be possible, as most smartphone dual SIM implementations are dual standby, whereas for this to work, you'd need dual active SIMs (with two separate radios), as two 4G-only (this is how JIO works, I understand) networks are unable to standby on only one radio. Unless something changed with Snapdragon 845 modem and this is now somehow technically possible, then please correct me.
What I would like to understand is, if dual VOLTE is suppososed to work on usual 3G/4G networks on the OnePlus 6.
Thank you.

Thank you mate. Could u please update when you have more information about this, because buying this phone for that price without this feature will be waste.
Dual Volte is supported by the SD 845, but it isn't activated on the OP6 and there's no word on if it'll be activated later
It's the latest SD845 with LTE CAT 18 MODEM. So definitely it will support the Dual VOLTE

Thanks. Is this information public, otherwise how reliable is your source on this?
It seems I won't be able to test it myself yet, as even though for the first time ever my own carrier (Telia in Lithuania) is selling the device themselves, they don't support VoLTE on their network... Hoping OnePlus will sort it out and add via software update later.
https://www.qualcomm.com/documents/snapdragon-845-mobile-platform-product-brief
Hardware support definitely available. Software support, well, remains to be seen i guess
Huawei phones already supports Dual 4G and VoLTE. It makes sense OnePlus will follow soon. Hopefully, will see the feature in OnePlus 6.
I guess it is available. Saw it in one of the review videos where the specifically mentioned that he is able to use both airtel 4g and Jio 4g at the same time.
So, I'm not that informed about the hardware and I don't even really know exactly, what you are talking about.
But to me it sounds like this post from the official AMA could be on that topic: (https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/...-wireless-ama-now.835469/page-9#post-18434071)
Maybe it can contribute to this discussion. If it isn't on topic, please let me know.

EDIT: Amazon India listing Page now confirms Dual 4G for OnePlus 6
Yes, it does support dual 4G standby. It was confirmed during QnA on OnePlus forums.

Yes, the Oneplus 6 does support dual VoLTE and you can use two SIMs with VoLTE simultaneously!
Guys, I just got the phone delivered and I confirm it support native dual active 4G LTE. I am using Airtel an Jio's SIM with my OP6 and using Airtel's data network. I could make and receive calls from both SIMs.

Hello, Audio quality via the earpiece is very crisp. Network reception is good as well, it could pick up the signal from an area which generally has poor network reception. Audio via speakerphone is adequate and you won't miss a call. About the camera, I find it better than S8 plus (I have that as well. ) I am not starting a debate but camera and audio are very subjective things and telling my opinion.
It supports Dual VOLTE!!!

Network connectivity issues

Hi there,
i am having serious connectivity issues on my MIX 3(bought from Gearbest) in Canada, Rogers/Fido carrier uses B4,B7 for LTE, but I never get that..stuck on 3G for voice and 3G+(H+) for data..tried both sim slots, different "preferred network" settings, nothing works..on chinese ROM and now Global ROM same thing, except Global is even less stable and it drops signal quite often..searched for it, but no results for Mix 3, although a lot of similar issues with other Xiaomi phones..anyone some ideas how to resolve this??
thanks a lot

I have 8/128, but that should be compatible with what i need for my carrier, B4 and B7. Spoke to my carrier tech support, nothing wrong with the sim, or my network...as i said, it was bad on china ROM, even worse after i flashed it to global. any chance it might be modem related?anyone with similar or same problems?
I flashed global on my 8/256 and didn't see any issues.

UPDATE:
Finally fixed it. Over the weekend I went to US and had perfect LTE connection while roaming with T-mobile, so i assumed it wasn't the MIX3 issue..I went to my carrier(FIDO) again and we figured that my APN had wrong name by default.but I wasn't able to change it or create a new one (some sort of blocking from my carrier with Android phones as I read on some other forums..). long story short, search "SOLVED-FIDO-APN-MIUI 10" if anyone encounter same or similar problem...can't post links

Will the U11 not work on AT&T next year?

I was just notified that AT&T is upgrading and ridding themselves of 3G. I was also given a list of phones that will still work on the network. The U11 was not included in the list, but my ancient One M9 was. That doesn't make much sense. So will the U11 become obsolete on the AT&T network next year? Any insight on this matter?

Matt from everything I have read,, yes att and cricket both the same company will shut down their 3g network and go with only phones capable of "hd voice" and our htc u11 from what i can gather does not have this quality/software/ chipset or what ever it is,, built in..
More here
What is HD voice? And why is phone call quality usually so bad?
We're used to seeing the HD moniker on videos and TVs, but now it's being applied to audio. Essentially though, it has the same meaning – high definition as in high resolution. Join us as we answer the question – what is HD voice?

So it looks as if we are truly screwed when it comes to elgible carriers in the near future for are antiquated u11. I have already been forced to leave cricket for simply removing my sim and reinstalling,, Maybe someone can further explain why this is hd voice thing is a issue with the u11, did htc simply forget to add the codec???

I get that they are dropping 3G, but voLTE should still work right? When I make a call it says 4G instead of LTE, but I can't find a definitive answer on the difference between the two. Does it look like Straight Talk is going to follow suit, or do you think that our devices will be compatible with them indefinitely? I'm glad you answered because I wanted to discuss it with you, but I didn't want to do it on the LOS thread. Thanks!
I can only confirm that my HTC U11 with LOS 18.1 can make calls with HD voice technology (this should also support device with which you have a voice connection and your mobile operators) and also my device works with VoLTE technology.

Yeah, I think you're right. It just won't be carrier supported. I had to activate my SIM in the One M9 and then put it back into the U11 just to get service. The AT&T system didn't recognize the U Ultra or the U11. Now it's just a game of wait and see if the service gets cut off a year from now. Probably be joining you on Straight Talk.

Just kept saying to get a bring your own phone kit and the phone would work. Not sure if he ever truly understood what I was saying. Is your device a dual-SIM?

single sim,, and just a side note , after getting kicked off of cricket I went to t-mobile and ask them the same question , and the guys responce was that they had no plans of getting rid of the 3 g or limiting lte connections. So I went with them but the cell signal was so bad in my area I had to switch to something else , my last hope was straight talk or buy a new phone, uggg ,, I have 2 u11's ,, thought they would last more than 4 years,, they might but the window is closing! lol

Yeah, T-Mobile coverage is terrible in my area too. I just got my U11. Flashed it with LOS. Got it in stable condition. Been wanting to replace my U Ultra for a long time with it. Can't really afford a brand new flagship, plus I'm just stuck on HTC. I love their devices. Then I get this news. Literally made me sick to my stomach. I just hope and pray that if AT&T does kick me off their network, that Straight Talk will be my loophole. Hope it keeps working for you too, man.

The phone companies and phone service providers are in bed together. Radio wave technology is the same as ever just fancier. All the fuc^ng 5 gigahertz radio signal output did was enable the cell phone providers to be able to completely shut down half their towers. The higher the gigahertz output the further the signal will carry see? Radio waves bounce up and down, these higher gigahertz are for DISTANCE not penetration. Mobile homes with the metal rooves and siding? Screwed. Brick house with treess in the yard? screwed. Because the radio waves at that high of a gigahertz doesn't penetrate worth a damn! They ALL screwed the customers, now forcing us to once again upgrade when this phone is perfectly capable to continue. Sorry. They all are. Hard to notice you completely loose service indoors when there is wi-fi internet automatically hooking up and taking over your data flow. You'd need a Yagi antennae and a broadcaster to put in the house to bounce the 5G signal around in your home, just like cable wi-fi. Get it? My HTC U11 works perfectly FINE with the internet providers 5G signal output and the 2.4 G output. So why will these phones not work with the carrier 5G? Think about it. I upgraded my 8 year old computer to be compatible with 5G simply by changing out the antenna that snaps in the motherboard. These cell phone companies and providers are screwing us to force us to keep purchasing more and more equipment, and the cable providers are helping them by disguising the loss of service with their wi-fi routers. Damn greedy bass turds.

You are dead nutz on , ever since they switched to 5 g my cell service is crapola,, as I live in a area with trees and hills, never had the issue before,, I was forced to sell my u11's at rock bottom prices, now even with a newer pixel I still have to rely on WiFi calling to hold a decent conversation. I could buy a 1500.00 flag ship and the results would be the same.
A yagi antennae pointed at the closest tower with an internal receiver set to 5g should have the 5g signal all in the house like a cable wi fi router. They are not difficult to set up. A person not very electronically inclined could set up the broadcaster. The antennae is not that big and easy to mount. Use the cat 5 cable to connect outdoor antennae to indoor broadcaster. The diagram for which wire color goes where should be shown. Before buying make sure all is 5g capable. Just Google search they are on sale on the internet probably not very high they used to not be but the world is different now lol

I am also waiting for someone to test this. Regardless of the bands, Rogers do not always 'allow' 5G and VOLTE on their network for phones that are not officially recognized. I found this out with the Oppo FInd X5 Pro which cannot get 5G or VOLTE on Rogers. VOLTE is especially an issue as it means you cannot make phone calls if there is no 3G.
I am hoping the 12S Ultra does not have this issue and can get VOLTE.

If you can't get VoLTE enabled by default, you can dial *#*#86583#*#* to force enable VoLTE.
Any Canadians receive their phones yet?
VoLTE working as pre activated. (Usa tmobile)
Good to knows - thanks! Would be great if someone on Rogers could also confirm.

Got mine but they sure do take their time. They are cheaper than most however. No duties.
Give a quick rundown when u got time. Does it get 5 G?
Only seen LTE+. However my area doesn't get 5G and I haven't had a chance to test it otherwise.
What carrier are you on please and do you see the VOLTE option in settings?
Rogers, but I have yet to test other options. I'm going to be unlocking bootloader and rooting.

I'm also on Rogers and have ordered the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 which has similar firmware. I'm curious whether VoLTE appears in the Settings/Mobile Network by virtue of your SIM, or whether you can enable it with the Xiaomi dialer code (disable carrier check). If not, I assume you can unlock, root with Magisk and use a VoLTE enabler module or edit your build.prop to get VoLTE. Not an issue for us yet as voice calls drop to Rogers 3G network, but when we follow suit with the Americans and shut down 3G we will need VoLTE to make voice calls over 4G (or one day 5g VoNR).
Finally got my phone. Can verify 5G works on Rogers. I'm in Winnipeg. Cheers
Canadian - bought phone from PDAPlaza - on Koodo
all is working well from a network perspective
any of y'all that have the phone, are keeping the china rom, and have any good tips on how to tune the phhone (debloating, app settings or anything else) please post for us!!
I'm still experiencing alot of little quirks here and there that I can't seem to figure out
I have an unexplained connectivity issue I can't quite put my finger on as the main quirk - like the network performance is generally good and speeds are fast but..there's these times when it seems to want to take a sec to properly connect to a server. Examples would be if I focus Discord it'll say "connecting..." for like 3-5 seconds before refreshing the content - it's a strangely long lag for something so minor. Another one is if I open my friends list in Pokemon go it's unusably slow (while it connects to the corresponding pogo server) for like...5-7 seconds then is perfectly fine. Those are just examples but there's others where it's fine once it establishes the connection but isn't in any hurry to establish it
I haven't noticed any connection issues. Most of the Chinese stuff can be installed. The only issue I have is WhatsApp isn't showing contact names. Just profile pic and phone numbers.
That's just permissions. Allow it to use contacts and you should be ok
Hi there,
May I know can We Unlock WiFi 6E(6GHz) by flashing to EU firmware?
Like the default China MIUI firmware won't support 6Ghz when it's not enabled in China, but I don't know if there's 6GHz RF and Antenna which could allow us to flash the phone to EU version, then able to connect my new router which supports WiFi 6E(6GHz).
