[Rooted OOS 5.1.8] Problems with uninstalling bloatware - OnePlus 6 Questions & Answers

After updating to 5.1.8, system apps including Google Assistant, Pay, and Chrome reappeared, so I just got into Titanium Backup to uninstall them. However, when Titanium says it successfully uninstalled these apps and I restart my phone, the apps are still there and it did not uninstall. I tried another app called System App Remover but that didn't even work. It just crashes when I try to uninstall one of these apps. What's the problem here? Why is it not letting me uninstall? I had 5.1.3 OOS previously and it uninstalled perfectly fine, but now it wont uninstall at all.

No idea, brother. I was able to uninstall by holding on the app icon and then choosing uninstall.

Really? By default, all I can do is disable the apps. Though, I just realized Calendar successfully uninstalled, but Google Pay, "Google" (Assistant) app, and Chrome won't.

I used LP and I removed almost all google Bloatware (not Chrome since I use It) in OOS 5.1.7. After the 5.1.8 update, they appear again, so I used LP again

Certain apps like Calendar, Calculator, Messages etc. are doubles from Google. They can be uninstalled without losing their functionality, because OP apps just like that already exist. Chrome or Google app are one of a kind. They cannot be uninstalled because they are part of the OS. You would have to root the phone to uninstall those. Maybe even flash a new rom to get rid of them completely.
Is it because of Google's new A/B partition mechanics?

HAd this before on some phones - Reflash in TWRP as sometimes this can cause issues if installing a new FW Update. Then try removing them from TB.
It may appear you are rooted but sometimes its a false positive. Get Magisk 16.4 to be sure.

Fkofilee, I did Gambetta's suggestion and it successfully uninstalled. I guess it's TB's fault for some reason. This validates that I am successfully rooted without any false-positives. Though, if there are problems in the future I may as well reflash. Thank you guys for helping!

Yea, i debloated it with TB+Magisk and i mainly wanted to delete the horrible gmail app and the google duo

No Idea what LP is, but I had same problem and reflashing was the ultimate solution. But the problem was I was not rooted on both partitions. magisk did not take on the second partition. Once I fixed that I was able to use Titanium Backup without problem. Although i had other issues that made the reflash a more complete option

I also had some issues earlier with Titanium, as it would not uninstall Youtube. However after a reboot YT was gone. All "Bloatware" Apps, which come with the ROM are being reinstalled with every update/dirtyflash, that is why I choose to just freeze these apps. A freezed app stays freezed after OTA/dirtyflash.
Also sometimes Titanium fails to correctly backup/restore "SimCity Build It" app data.

I use with succes Root Essentials for debloating. It needs root.

its b/c the files updated and now are in the data partition instead of system, u have to use a root file explorer or boot into TWRP's File manager and go into the data/app and remove from there also.

I've seen ads before this update too. Mostly when searching for places while on the road. Doesn't happen all the time though, I get ad listed results at the top, and then what I actually searched for at the bottom of the results page.
Is anyone else having trouble installing (downloading) this update?
It tries 10 or more times and then fails saying "download was unsuccessful"
Other apps install/update just fine. (I see about 10 download complete icons/notifications)
Tried uninstalling market updates, and also restarting.

Hmmmmmmine is labeled as Maps.apk not as com.google.android.apps.maps.apk in system/apps.
I wonder if thats why it wont install???
Edit:
I deleted maps.apk with Android Commander.
Copied com.google.android.apps.maps into system/app folder and it worked.
Must of been a theme that renamed the apk and didn't allow the update
thanks Daveid

Right, the originally packaged Maps.apk is in /system/app, however (just like with the market) when an update is issued, that file is ignored for the newer version that is placed in /data/app - it would seem that EVEN GOOGLE THEMSELVES can't modify the RO status of the /system partition to update applications (without pushing a system update requiring a flash in recovery). So you may notice in /data/app (or /sd-ext/app if you use Apps2SD) com.google.android.maps.apk & com.google.android.vending.apk. It is safe to remove the versions Maps.apk & Vending.apk from your /system/app directory (or rename them if you want to preserve a backup in case...).

Nice info. It worked for me.
Code:
adb remount
adb shell mv /system/app/Maps.apk /system/app/Maps.apk.bak
adb install -r com.google.android.apps.maps.apk
Also deleted the vending apk in /system, I wonder if thats the cause of the Market crashes...

I've tried updating on both 3G and 2G with no luck either way; it always results in "Download Unsuccessful."
I know that updates work because I updated 3 other programs and only Google Maps fails. Going to have to manually update this one.

How to install:
Make sure you have "install from unknown sources" checked on settings.
Different methods
A) Download to PC, then upload to dropbox, and download to phone.
B) Use ADB:
Code:
adb install -r com.android.vending-1.apk
C) Mount USB to computer, dragg .apk file to sd card. Unmount, use a file manager and install.
Enjoy!
When i install from file manager it fails and from adb it fails again with the message:
[INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_INCOSISTENT_CERTIFICATES]
am i doing something wrong?
I've downloaded the APK and installed it via Linda Manager... works fine
No need to do any adb commands, at least not here!
weird... this usually means that you cant install it because it's interfeiring with your market.. almost as if you had to uninstall one to install the other..but it works without uninstalling the market.
Im not sure, maybe go to settings>manage apps>market
click force stop and clear cache..
see if that works.. not sure why you are getting the error.
Does it has to do with my current market version? It's version 2.2.6 manually pushed because for some reason it would not update to the newest, was the market in a newer version maybe?
For those having issues installing the new market... are you currently using a theme? Is your current Market modified? If it is signed with testkeys that might be causing the problem. Try reflashing your rom (without theme) and then try the market. Then simply remove the vending.apk file from your theme file and try flashing your theme. It should (in theory) work fine.

Pandora has contact list permissions, Facebook has Texting permissions. I fixed them.

Edit:
The developer of Permission remover has contacted me regaurding the apps inability to sign and reinstall pandora. He has sent me a preview of an update to his app that now does not require the second step of signing the app with zip signer 2
I got annoyed that the latest version of Pandora had permission to read my contacts. I removed the permission and re-installed with my rooted Gnex, without a PC. Here is how I did it:
1. Downloaded and installed the latest version of Pandora from the android market.

2. Download and install Permission Remover from the Android Market.
https://market.android.com/details?id=at.plop.PermissionRemoverFree&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImF0LnBsb3AuUGVybWlzc2lvblJlbW92ZXJGcmVlIl0.
3. Permission Remover can remove permissions from apks stored on your sd card or in the "installed applications list". It is also supposed to be able to save, re-sign, and reinstall the stripped down app but this did not work for Pandora. So I used it to strip the "read contacts" permission but had to complete additional steps described below.
4 Download and install Zip Signer 2 from the Android Market.
https://market.android.com/details?id=kellinwood.zipsigner2&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImtlbGxpbndvb2Quemlwc2lnbmVyMiJd
5. I used Zip Signer 2 to navigate to /sdcard/at.plop.PermissionRemover/New and locate the new "contact permission free" Pandora apk, and sign making sure to specify the file extension .apk.
6. Using a file explorer I installed the newly stripped and signed apk.
If you would rather have the apk I have already cleaned up:
https://www.box.com/shared/mz628clir8uhhh15yqkp
The newest version of Facebook has sms read and write permissions that can be removed via the same process described above.
Here is the apk that I have already processed to remove them:
http://www.box.com/s/3nlnxk6u4jr5dsmeyg3n
So I can do this to remove permissions from any app? Just follow this guide? I think some permissions are not needed at all. Though for each update we need to do this every time right?
Also, when removing permissions it means they can no longer do that right? If so, I will rewrite your guide for a much easier format. Make it look pretty. XD
Plus we can make a list of apps with removed permissions. Free ones of course. XD I would be more than happy to start this project if this goes well.

I cant guarantee that removing permissions won't break an app. There is no harm in trying. If you do remove a permission the worst that can happen (should be) that the app wont work. If it doesn't work, all one would have to do is uninstall the edited app and reinstall from a backup or the market.
As far as I know, removing a permission disallows the app from utilizing them.
The app creator can and often does alter permissions between updates. When prompted in the android market for an app update (if updating works at all) all of the original permissions as well as any new permissions will be restored.

Well if we could figure out if removing the permissions stops them from accessing what they want to. So removing the ability to read contacts from Pandora, makes it so that can not read them any more. At all. Right? That is what I am trying to figure out. So removing a permission disallows it to access the info?

I asked a question, if it is true, would you be willing to do a project and remove unnecessary permissions?
Sure. Sounds like fun to me.
It would be a great thing removing all unnecessary permissions, but, how to know what permissions are really needed for app to work properly? I guess that every app has it's own unique permissions that are necessary but how to know which ones? Is the only way to find that out by trying and errors?
For example, Keypad is using data traffic (if you don't believe try installing Onavo from Market). Why. What would happened if we remove it?
Generally keyboards use internet access to provide spell check/autocorrect or Speach to text services.
But yeah basically you have to decide what functionality you wish to limit, and conduct trial by error studies on how far you can go removing permissions.

So we wont need the Zip Signer 2 app ever again or he is just fixing Pandora?
I removed, the Contact permission from Pandora with the new version and it worked without step 2.
I have no access to Facebook. I can't even load it. It says that it can't mount or write /sdcard

We wont have to use zip signer 2 until we find another app that has a problem installing after removing the permissions with Permission Remover. The Developer would like us to notify him about apps that dont install properly after only using Permission remover. The developer has been really responsive. I didn't even contact him. He saw this thread and contacted me.
Does this work? Can we remove permissions from Facebook or Angry Birds?

[Completed] Play Services 5.0.84 Causing Problems?

I have a Verizon S4, running a GPE ROM and KTweaker kernel. Last night, my phone's Play Services was still on 4.whatever, and everything was fine. This morning, I powered on my phone, and it's nigh unusable because I keep getting an error over and over that Play Services isn't working. I managed to get into settings and see that my Play Services is now at 5.0.84. Is it just me having issues, or is this a common thing right now? Pretty frustrating, considering I really can't do anything with my phone with these constant errors. :/

Oh, I see that yoiu have already posted your question in the ROM thread.
I think it's a good place.
Although I see some other users also reporting issues after Google Play Service updates ... some could fix it by clearing data of Google Play Service app, some just uninstalled the latest Google Play Service update, and others fixed it by flashing latest Gapps for their ROM.
So asking in your ROM's thread is fine IMO.
The only thing I can clear, via settings, is the cache for Play Services, but that doesn't help any. I was going to try to disable it and then reenable it, but it won't let me, because it says something about being a device administrator or something.
I didn't have to install GAPPs, as that was included in this ROM package, so I don't know if I should download and flash one of those or if that will cause even more problems for me due to the ROM already having had that stuff.

Unless you get no better advice on the ROM thread, you should reflash the ROM.
If it does not solve the issue, wipe data (= do a factory reset).
Make a backup of everything important before.
EDIT:
My team mate @bhiga found another possible fix to try before wiping data:
Sometimes using Titanium Backup to convert Google Play Services to a user app can fix this issue of Play Services constantly crashing. Need to be patient and keep dismissing until the process completes, then reboot.

It's a special feature in Titanium Backup Pro app. When you open the system app in Backup/Restore, you see Backup properties. Just wipe from right to left to see the Special features:

Ah, I see. Unfortunately, I can't use the pro features in TB because it can't verify the license, since the Play Services error won't allow me to connect to the Play Store. :/

So keep a look at the ROM thread ... some experienced users have a look at your issue and are trying to help you already.
If I habe another idea, I will post or in the ROM thread too.
XDA Assist is just to point you to the right place for getting help and support.

Android 4.4.4 Internet issue

Since I flashed a Android 4.4.4 custom rom I cannot connect to any Google related website via browser anymore.
This started with flashing deviant rom, but is also present on other 4.4.4 ROMS like latest CandyKat.
The issue persists now since Android 4.4.4 is available for our HOS, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with the Google connection itself.
The error occurs only if I try to connect to a Google related site via browser (f.e. Google search, G+, Google settings,....)
Google Search via Google NOW works fine instead, even the connection to all other websites.
Always getting browser error reports like:
Website is not available
ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR
Website couldn't be loaded
ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE
Tried several different browsers, all with same result.
Tested on my PC with my home wifi - everything works fine, so it's not a wifi/router problem.
Also tested on mobile data, on other wifis and on data roaming in other countries, always getting same error message....
Country: Germany
Provider: Congstar / T-MOBILE Europe
Switched back my backup of Android 4.4.2 and everything works as it should.
Someone experiencing same issues or has a solution at hand?
Thanks in advance....

It's a virus and hits Google services. Why aren't you replying to my inbox? I had to reinstall chrome Google plus and Youtube. Need stock browser if you have the APK. Blackmarket most likely culprit. Uninstall and remove all data, go into developer options uncheck unknown sources and do NOT allow unverified apps before uninstalling.

Sorry, didn't recognize your message.
Well, if it is a virus, wouldn't it be erased by a full wipe?
Cause I flashed several custom roms since the error occurred and always did a full wipe between them. All my apps are downloaded from the playstore, so I doubt the source is a blackmarket app....
Also ran a virus scanner w/o any result....
Thnx for your reply so far!
As you suggested, deleted all my Google related apps including data and installed them from scratch.... Unfortunately I get same errors as before....

Tryt from scatch and make sure to use the most updated google apps package (preferably from a different source). Also make sure you have no ad based software or are restoring any ad based apps (ie ad blocker that messes with your hosts file).
Do what I told you to do in dev options as well. Make sure all syncing options are off so you don't sync anything like a virus file.
Ok, here's now what I tried:
1. Wiped cache, Dalvik, system, data 3x
2. installed CandyKat ROM + recommended slim minimal gapps (fresh download from source)
3. Rebooted and finished instalation guide
4. Immediately checked if under system / security the app validation is enabled and unknown sources are disabled.
5. Disabled Google account sync completely
6. Started stock browser and visited Google search website
7. Tried to search something..... And.....
.... Still no luck!
What I've found out: after refreshing f.e. Google search website several times I get the results. But if I start the search or refresh the site again, I get the same errors as before....
I got something like this too. It only happened in the stock browser and not Chrome or FireFox.
Installed chrome and it seems to work fine. Tried several other browsers like stock, Clean master and dolphin - all of'em reported me issues....
stock browser problem
There are posts on this issue all over the internet.
Seems independent of ROM.
Stock browser cannot connect to Google sites on Android 4.4.4. Chrome can.
This is a problem for me because I use 2-step authentication for Google.
On 2-step setting up a Google account on the phone requires the website on stock browser.
This fails and there is a loop.
I may have to deactivate 2-step authentication.
Why does it require the built in browser? This is a terrible problem.
Can't get referred to the changelog on AOKP's roms because its requires the stock browser to re-direct to the App
This bug has been fixed 2 or 3 days ago in CyanogenMod nightlies :

Install the nightly.
Seems to be the problem lies deeper in the code...
