Pandora has contact list permissions, Facebook has Texting permissions. I fixed them. - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Edit:
The developer of Permission remover has contacted me regaurding the apps inability to sign and reinstall pandora. He has sent me a preview of an update to his app that now does not require the second step of signing the app with zip signer 2
I got annoyed that the latest version of Pandora had permission to read my contacts. I removed the permission and re-installed with my rooted Gnex, without a PC. Here is how I did it:
1. Downloaded and installed the latest version of Pandora from the android market.

2. Download and install Permission Remover from the Android Market.
https://market.android.com/details?id=at.plop.PermissionRemoverFree&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImF0LnBsb3AuUGVybWlzc2lvblJlbW92ZXJGcmVlIl0.
3. Permission Remover can remove permissions from apks stored on your sd card or in the "installed applications list". It is also supposed to be able to save, re-sign, and reinstall the stripped down app but this did not work for Pandora. So I used it to strip the "read contacts" permission but had to complete additional steps described below.
4 Download and install Zip Signer 2 from the Android Market.
https://market.android.com/details?id=kellinwood.zipsigner2&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImtlbGxpbndvb2Quemlwc2lnbmVyMiJd
5. I used Zip Signer 2 to navigate to /sdcard/at.plop.PermissionRemover/New and locate the new "contact permission free" Pandora apk, and sign making sure to specify the file extension .apk.
6. Using a file explorer I installed the newly stripped and signed apk.
If you would rather have the apk I have already cleaned up:
https://www.box.com/shared/mz628clir8uhhh15yqkp

The newest version of Facebook has sms read and write permissions that can be removed via the same process described above.
Here is the apk that I have already processed to remove them:
http://www.box.com/s/3nlnxk6u4jr5dsmeyg3n

So I can do this to remove permissions from any app? Just follow this guide? I think some permissions are not needed at all. Though for each update we need to do this every time right?
Also, when removing permissions it means they can no longer do that right? If so, I will rewrite your guide for a much easier format. Make it look pretty. XD
Plus we can make a list of apps with removed permissions. Free ones of course. XD I would be more than happy to start this project if this goes well.

I cant guarantee that removing permissions won't break an app. There is no harm in trying. If you do remove a permission the worst that can happen (should be) that the app wont work. If it doesn't work, all one would have to do is uninstall the edited app and reinstall from a backup or the market.
As far as I know, removing a permission disallows the app from utilizing them.
The app creator can and often does alter permissions between updates. When prompted in the android market for an app update (if updating works at all) all of the original permissions as well as any new permissions will be restored.

Well if we could figure out if removing the permissions stops them from accessing what they want to. So removing the ability to read contacts from Pandora, makes it so that can not read them any more. At all. Right? That is what I am trying to figure out. So removing a permission disallows it to access the info?

I asked a question, if it is true, would you be willing to do a project and remove unnecessary permissions?

Sure. Sounds like fun to me.

It would be a great thing removing all unnecessary permissions, but, how to know what permissions are really needed for app to work properly? I guess that every app has it's own unique permissions that are necessary but how to know which ones? Is the only way to find that out by trying and errors?
For example, Keypad is using data traffic (if you don't believe try installing Onavo from Market). Why. What would happened if we remove it?

Generally keyboards use internet access to provide spell check/autocorrect or Speach to text services.
But yeah basically you have to decide what functionality you wish to limit, and conduct trial by error studies on how far you can go removing permissions.

So we wont need the Zip Signer 2 app ever again or he is just fixing Pandora?
I removed, the Contact permission from Pandora with the new version and it worked without step 2.
I have no access to Facebook. I can't even load it. It says that it can't mount or write /sdcard

We wont have to use zip signer 2 until we find another app that has a problem installing after removing the permissions with Permission Remover. The Developer would like us to notify him about apps that dont install properly after only using Permission remover. The developer has been really responsive. I didn't even contact him. He saw this thread and contacted me.

Does this work? Can we remove permissions from Facebook or Angry Birds?

I've seen ads before this update too. Mostly when searching for places while on the road. Doesn't happen all the time though, I get ad listed results at the top, and then what I actually searched for at the bottom of the results page.
Is anyone else having trouble installing (downloading) this update?
It tries 10 or more times and then fails saying "download was unsuccessful"
Other apps install/update just fine. (I see about 10 download complete icons/notifications)
Tried uninstalling market updates, and also restarting.

Hmmmmmmine is labeled as Maps.apk not as com.google.android.apps.maps.apk in system/apps.
I wonder if thats why it wont install???
Edit:
I deleted maps.apk with Android Commander.
Copied com.google.android.apps.maps into system/app folder and it worked.
Must of been a theme that renamed the apk and didn't allow the update
thanks Daveid

Right, the originally packaged Maps.apk is in /system/app, however (just like with the market) when an update is issued, that file is ignored for the newer version that is placed in /data/app - it would seem that EVEN GOOGLE THEMSELVES can't modify the RO status of the /system partition to update applications (without pushing a system update requiring a flash in recovery). So you may notice in /data/app (or /sd-ext/app if you use Apps2SD) com.google.android.maps.apk & com.google.android.vending.apk. It is safe to remove the versions Maps.apk & Vending.apk from your /system/app directory (or rename them if you want to preserve a backup in case...).

Nice info. It worked for me.
Code:
adb remount
adb shell mv /system/app/Maps.apk /system/app/Maps.apk.bak
adb install -r com.google.android.apps.maps.apk
Also deleted the vending apk in /system, I wonder if thats the cause of the Market crashes...

I've tried updating on both 3G and 2G with no luck either way; it always results in "Download Unsuccessful."
I know that updates work because I updated 3 other programs and only Google Maps fails. Going to have to manually update this one.

[App Mod HDPI/MDPI] Demotivators Protips Widget Mod [04.08.2011]

Credits
CyanogenMod Team - Source for Protips
Despair, Inc. - All of the Demotivators in this mod.
Insomnia - Making me bored enough to do this.
Requirements
Possibly Root - I assume you have to be rooted since this is replacing a system app.
HDPI/MDPI Compatible
Android 1.5+ - I assume this because minSDKversion is set to 3 by default in AndroidManifest.xml.
Only supports English (res/values/arrays.xml).
About
Basically, I couldn't sleep and was bored and was thinking about how unused/useless the Protips widget is and wanted to make it a little bit more usable. I like to laugh; I like sarcasm and bad humor; I like Demotivators, so all this just sort of came together. I take no credit at all for these; I just put them into this mod. I included all of the Demotivators that I could; there were 7/8 that would not fit because of the length of them; they are pretty easy to find if you go to the site and look through them. Also, there are no pictures included with this because it would have decreased the amount of text I could include. If you have never seen/read any of the Demotivators, then I suggest you go to the site and at least look through all of them because some of them don't make a ton of sense without the picture, but I included those anyways because they make me laugh, and I know what the picture looks like regardless.
Screenshot
The app uses the stock images, this is just using my theme engine theme. Mainly just to give an idea of text.

ADB Push
Code:
adb remount
adb push Demotivators_HDPI-signed.apk /system/app/Protips.apk
Install like a normal APK file (untested)
I changed the versionCode and versionName, so this should in theory be able to be installed from the sdcard like any other app, but is untested.
Code:
Place APK on sdcard, and install with file browser of choice.
ZIP File
Code:
Place file on sdcard and flash in recovery.
Usage
Longpress on homescreen, select widgets, select Demotivators, press widget to cycle, enjoy.
Download
HDPI APK File - http://bit.ly/gkuscw
HDPI ZIP File - http://bit.ly/igdKqO
Flash in recovery.

MDPI ZIP File - http://bit.ly/i5YMdj
Flash in recovery.
Ending Notes
I hope you enjoy this and get some laughter out of it. I know I do, and it's much needed sometimes.
This is classic! Great work man! Thanks for thinking of this... (ah, the productivity of insomnia) Hmm, could be an original demotivator. "Insomnia... (Won't think of anything funny to put in here until I'm laying in bed tonight)"
Installed fine using astro for me. Thanks for this.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Strange thing, app installs fine but when I add the widget to my homescreen it shows the Android-hints widget.
Installed it through ES-file explorer, IO-file explorer and Super Manager. I'm not able to install it the other way.
Anyone else having this issue?
mmmh made sth. wrong... only get the normal tipps but no demotivations... installed the app via the posted direct-download link
install failed
I tried to install using RootExplorer but was denied. Failed to install. Am going to continue trying and will edit post after I succeed.
EDIT: I finally got a free minute to try again and have successfully installed using terminal emulator and jrummy's Roottools market app. I had to use Roottools to mount system bc I can never remember the correct way to type it in terminal emulator. Here's my method :
1. Mount system with Roottools
2. Open Terminal Emulator and type the following:
PHP:
su
cp /mnt/sdcard/download/Demotivators_HDPI-signed.apk /system/app/protips.apk
reboot
The widget will be in the list after booting back up.
NOTE: Your file may be in a different location and you will need to modify the command accordingly.
Its not allowing me to install. Tells me to 'upgrade'. Its confusing it with protips. Rooted Epic, stock using Astro.

I put a .zip file to flash in recovery in the OP that you can try instead trying to install like a normal apk. I'm not sure of what the issue is.
This is just a modified version of Protips which is why it's trying to make you "upgrade" it.
funny app
great way to replace that horrible Protips app lol. I just used Root Explorer, and went to the System/Apps folder. Just rename Protips.apk to Protips.bak (so you still have it) then just move the Demotivational app to System/Apps and rename it to Protips.apk. Then I just rebooted my phone, went to my widgets, and added it easily

[PORT]Facebook Inside Xperia 2.0-Everything working :)

--THIS IS NOT MY WORK. ALL CREDIT GOES TO BLACKWATCH89 FOR GETTING THE FILES TOGETHER IN THIS THREAD. THIS IS JUST AN ACCUMALATION AND AN EASIER WAY OF MAKING IT WORK. --
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT MESSES UP ON YOUR PHONE. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!1!1!1111
THIS WILL ONLY WORK FOR STOCK BASED ROMS- I.E STOCK 2.3.3, WOLFBREAK V6, POSSIBLY OTHERS BUT HAVE NOT TESTED ON OTHERS.
-This will add SE Home launcher, Media discovery, app discovery, world clock, calendar apps.
okay, here it goes. It's not as simple as it looks so PLEASE BE CAREFUL.
THINGS YOU'LL NEED
-Root explorer or equivalent
-Flashable zip with MOST files:DOWNLOAD HERE
-SEMCFacebookProxy.apk:DOWNLOAD HERE
-SE 2.3.4 Home launcher (all widgets work on this and you can share apps as well):DOWNLOAD HERE
INSTRUCTIONS. PLEASE FOLLOW CAREFULLY AND DONT SKIP ANY STEPS.
1.REMOVE ALL FACEBOOK ACCOUNTS! I.E Remove Facebook inside xperia account and facebook sync account. Also, if you want to be extra safe, go to your facebook-privacy settings-apps and websites and REMOVE the facebook inside xperia option.
2.Download all files required, put zips and SEMCFacebookProxy.apk on SDCARD.
3.Flash FB02.zip using xrecovery. Flash 2.3.4 home launcher as well. Wipe dalvik cache.FIX PERMISSIONS (IMPORTANT).Reboot.
4.Install SEMCFacebookProxy.apk using some file explorer. It should install perfectly.
5.Login to facebook, choose sync settings. If everything worked properly you should get a facebook inside xperia message asking for permission options in notification bar.
6.Using root explorer, go to system/app and MOVE SEMCFacebookService.apk to sdcard. Reboot, then INSTALL the same SEMCFacebookService.apk from your sdcard. Reboot again. You might get another authorization notification but that's okay, everything should be working perfectly now.
Troubleshooting
1.If you don't get a prompt asking you to authorize Facebook inside Xperia, REMOVE your facebook sync and FIX sync. Then, relogin into facebook, choose sync options, it should come up.
2.Sharing apps MIGHT not work on new 2.3.4 Home launcher. It might work for you but it's no guarantee. It didn't work for me, but did wrok for others. One thing you can try if it isn't working is to UNINSTALL 2.3.4 launcher by deleting home.apk from system/app (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ANOTHER LAUNCHER!) and reflash it!
3.If you get connection problems with media discovery, try fixing permissions using xrecovery
Have fun!

The best way to make this tool even better....Give your input, what would you like to see?
Awesome. thanks for this!
I already have root and I kinda went on a deleting spree when i got root... I uninstalled a dozen or two apps that I figured I didn't need. I realize it probably wasnt the best idea and I probably should have frozen them first, but oh well. I think i caused some random battery drains now and am thinking about what to do next. I can think of two options:
1)Odin back to stock/Run this tool^ --> is there any way around loosing my data when I Odin?
2)Wait for SS/install custom ROM --> The custom ROM should replace anything I messed up right?
I also implemented the fix to write to SD. Any advice you have would be great! I am not having major problems with my phone by any means. I'm just looking for the best experience.
The way I compiled the executable may pull up as a Virus in Symantec Endpoint but I assure you it is not.

If you are unsure about anything removed that might cause harm then ODIN'ing back to stock would be recommend. I usually only use ODIN when I want that "out of the box / from scratch" mind set. If your phone has no real malfunctions (like you said) try downloading a battery monitoring app. I use battery Doctor.

We could add a package, it would be large, to push all the deleted files back to the device and set permissions to each. It would be challenging but ultimately can be done, if needed. That is of course if you didn't want to wipe the entire phone. In my other thread I put downloadable links to each app that was removed with the original debloat script. OP you can link to those if you wish.

wouldnt it be easier for a talented person to create a no wipe odin tar? one that wont wipe phone at all but will reinstall the system and put back anything that was undone keeping everything else intact.. if possible would be a lot easier than making a package to load everything back

It's kind of a one stop shop for installing UBS drivers, rooting, debloating and adding mods. Still a WIP
A couple of ideas based upon what I've seen requested on the forum:
1) Native wifi tether subscription bypass
2) A shortcut on the pull down menu for 1)

If I stop the system like I've been doing I don't see why framework modifications are not a possibility. I'll play around tonight when my wife and daughter are sleeping.
Update it seems there is ONLY a deodexed version of the framework patch for NAtive Wifi Tether Bypass. Until I play more the only thing we can offer is adb installing X Tether and Xposed.
Thanks for this, used it to remove some bloatware i missed!!!

...this isn't that type of program. That's something you can either download from the playstore for a custom toggle switch, or wait for ROMs to come out. Or do what I did and download Xposed and added the long press volume up button that enables flashlight with phone off.

If you (or someone else) wants to take the time to edit the necessary files for this to work I'd be more then willing to add it to the tool.
The procedure can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2617552
I am at work and do not have time to decompile / recompile these files. Nor are we allowed to have such software on our PC's (APKTOOL)
Like I said, if someone wants to edit the files and recompile them. Send them to my e-mail [email protected] and I will add this function to the TOOLKIT

Unfornately not working in the original UK 4.4.2 firmware. Start with TWRP and run the installation process and in the end the aroma installer said: the circles installed (or something like that), i reboot the phone, but nothing happened, the .apk aren't in the system folders. I tried to add the .apks manually, but the MotLauncher FC all the times.
Not working with my tmobile 4.4.3

Please provide log. I have tested on HTC One android 4.4.2. It's also work on Motorola RAZR and Droid Ultra.
If you put apk manualy make sure put jar and libs with xml.
In your updater-script you change permissions for all files in /system/app, /system/framework, /system/etc/permissions, /system/lib (you are using set_perm_recursive command for these directories), but you are installing only 7 files. It is not good idea to change permissions for files you are not installing. From my point of view you need to set permissions only for installed files and do not touch other files.

The problem caused by the original Launcher app. When i renamed the Moto X's Launcher2.apk to .apt, restart the phone and set the MotLauncher - its works fine. I think these two launcher app have a collision because the .xmls inside are very similar.
I erased the apps, files and wipe cache, dalvik cache - sorry i dont have log

Locked bootloder, but rooted phone Not the name, the extension important. Only rooted device you will rename the .apk with rootexplorer or someone like that. I rename the extension to .apt so the system can not see the original .apk.

Yes I am on a verizon moto X locked boot but have root thru slapmymoto.. and I use a great file explorer named fx explorer and used it to change the moto x launcher to .apk.bak but the home screen wouldn't work after doing that.. but I could access previous pages so I pulled up downloads and tried running the three circles apps homescreen, weather and circles.. but they all failed. wonder if I can do this without an unlocked boot?

I see. I have XT1052 EU version, arrived with 4.4.2 and I'm root only after i unlocked the bootloader. That's why i asked the locked boot. If you dont have a 3rd party launcher (nova, apex, etc) it's dangerous to rename the only launcher.
To tell the truth another hungarian forum members tried the circles, but not suceeded. For me the MotLauncher more slower than the original and when the circles widget relod (step back to the main screen) it has slow respond + the clock not working. = wiped the apps and I use nova beta launcher with chronus.
Guys, this can be recreated with far less headache in Ultimate Custom Clock Widget, or Zooper Widget, or any kind of customer widgets.

And here are the permissions those apps MUST HAVE.. some dipship designs an app and wants all of your personal info.. screw that.. no reason to need to know all of that stuff.. a nosy ass app developer
Identity
find accounts on the device
Contacts/Calendar
read calendar events plus confidential information
read your contacts
Location
approximate location (network-based)
SMS
read your text messages (SMS or MMS)
Phone
directly call phone numbers
read call log
Photos/Media/Files
modify or delete the contents of your USB storage
test access to protected storage
Other
access mail information
prevent device from sleeping
full network access
Isn't this installing the Droid Ultra Launcher into your /system/ folder? That's far more invasive. Those apps have those permissions because you can make widgets that display that information. It doesn't read it with impunity.
