Hi Everyone. As the title states are the failure rates on google devices crazy high? I originally got a google pixel XL 1 for free after the battery issues the original Nexus 6P was having. I've had to deal with constant device replacement every since. I've had to replace it 3 times in a very short period for internal speaker thats used for phone calls failed (i could hear people's voice but they couldn't hear mine). Now last night i go unlock my phone and i see the following error message on the lock screen
"fingerprint hardware not available"
so i reboot the phone and the fingerprint settings even disappears from the settings menu. I call google support and they come to the conclusion its hardware failure.
I don't abuse my devices at all and if you look at my current pixel there isn't a scratch on it. This fall it looks like i will need a new device (i'm using an old device i had laying around the house for now). I much prefer android but if i can't get a google experience device then i will got back to IOS (i want updates). Samsung have beautiful hardware but i want updates. So i would like to get maybe a pixel 2 xl (if i get great price on one) or a pixel 3 xl this fall but of course i don't want to deal with these hardware failures anymore. Any advice would be appreciated.
We have no idea if the Pixel 3 will have any major issues. No point in worrying about that before the phone has even been released.
The hardware failure issues with your Nexus 6P and Pixel XL are unrelated. It doesn't mean Google phones have a high failure rate. The 6P was known to have battery issues but going through several RMAs fir the Pixel XL could just be bad luck.
From what I've seen the most common issues with the Pixel 2/XL have been less severe than with the Nexus 5x and 6P. The Pixel 2 XL seems to have had more issues than the Pixel 2 but even those are pretty minor compared to the 5x bootloop and 6P bootloop and battery problems.

Yes, Google devices have had a long history of issues:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/time-nexus-pixel-device-didnt-major-bug-t3578515
That being said, the Pixel 2 and 2 XL appear to finally breaking that trend.
The latest Pixels are headed in the right direction...

Hey, All,
I've noticed that some of my recorded videos will have a few seconds of stuttering/frame dropping at certain points. I'm in airplane 5 mode when shooting, and I have plenty of storage available. It's absolutely unacceptable not being able to predict when this may happen and what may cause it.
Here's a clip of it acting up: https://youtu.be/b15FaXWr8MM
Has anyone else had this? I seem to remember this being an issue on my Pixel 2XL as well...
If a third party party app would prevent this, I wouldn't mind trying.
Thanks,
Matt!
If you follow my thread I post a few days ago I had same problem. And Google had me go back to the original version of the camera app that came with the phone

Have the same problem. We bought 2 x Pixel 3 XLs and they both have this problem.
Also had this problem on my previous phone, the Pixel XL
Any solutions?

Pixel 3 warms up quickly, and when it does it will throttle CPUs heavily causing all sorts of video drops if Android starts doing something in the background as the phone can't keep up. Maybe it's something Google can improve in software but I doubt it. Just feels phone is thermally compromised somehow.
Hello,
So I recently purchased my Google Pixel 3 XL and it has a buzzing/distortion sound when playing music(especially piano type music) and when hearing pod-casts where people who have a deeper voice distort more( at volume below 50%).
I am seeing so many posts on Reddit about this issue saying this "Buzzing/Distortion" occurs on all Pixel 3 XL devices , there are also some people who say their devices don't have the issue.
Most of the people are inclined to believe that this is a hardware issue, but some say that it is a software issue and Google will issue a fix in one of the upcoming updates.
I reached out to Google Support and they said they are aware of such reports regarding the issue and their team of Technical Experts are working on a solution but they are not disclosing any ETA nor confirming the issue.
Meanwhile XDA members who own a Pixel 3 XL, can you chime in on whether you have the issue ?
The best method to identify whether you have this issue or not is to try one or more of the following.
1. Listen to this music : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R30yRARijRc .... The music distorts at volume on or below 70%
2. Try one of the Frequency generator App - For Eg: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.luxdelux.frequencygenerator&hl=en_US ... There seems to be distortion from the bottom speaker on frequencies ranging from 160Hz to 550Hz
3. Navigate to Settings -> Sound -> Default Notification Sound and play the "Gentle Gong" sound at volume below 80%
4. Simple use Google Assistant and use one of the male voices and listen to the voice closely
5. Place a call on Loud-Speaker and listen closely for slight distortion/crackling
I have tried all the above and have narrowed the issue to be on the bottom speaker on whatever sound which has frequency ranging from 160Hz to 550Hz . A workaround is to download a third-party equalizer app and reduce the output of these frequencies which reduces the buzzing by about 30% but makes the speakers sound tinny with no depth.
If your device also has the speaker distortion, kindly do let know.
Thank You.
Yes. I have the same issue. Just weighing up what the next step should be as it seems that anyone who got a replacement finds with it the same issue and therefore there's no point in getting a replacement... But I would hate for if they figured it to be a design error and then because I'd not been returning phones continually until a redesigned, working replacement were available that I not be able to get one...
I agree. This is more likely a hardware defect/design fault I assume. But the most surprising thing is that there are people who say their device has no issues mentioned in the OP at all. And there is no public acknowledgement from Google yet regarding this problem. I've been reading at Reddit and people are inclining towards returning their device altogether and switching to the regular Pixel 3.
I initially voted no but after listening to some piano music I noticed that it does, in fact, distort and it's quite significant! Thanks for ruining my day! JK.
I'm on my 4th pixel 3 XL for various issues and 4/4 have this issue. I really doubt there are ones out there without this problem sadly.

So, it's confirmed... Google confirms a Fix for this issue is in the works (assuming this is a software issue).
Source : https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/11/15/pixel-3-xl-owners-complaining-buzzing-distorted-speakers/
Seems Android Police reached out to Google and they did confirm the news.
Now there is no definite scheduled mentioned for the fix, but hopefully it is soon.
Did the update completely solve the issue for anyone? My XL sounded terrible out of the box but it was on launch software. Once updated it's much better but still there for me especially at lower volumes just nowhere near as bad as it was. Not sure it's really worth an RMA but it's still not good.
No, it didn't fix it. My Pixel 3 XL still has this issue after 2018 Dec update.
I just compared my 2 XL and 3 XL side-by-side with Spotify playing same music. Spotify allow you to "switch" between two devices so 1 device just continue (with a bit overlap) the music of the other instantly. (pretty neat!)
My finding as follows:
1. 3 XL does sound louder than 2 XL with same volume. Max volume of 3XL is also louder
2. 3 XL has more "full" sound with better bass and human voice. 2 XL, although to me already good enough, sounds thin comparing to 3 XL.
3. 3 XL has very bad vibration around 50% volume while 2 XL doesn't vibrate so bad even on full volume. (50% on 3 XL almost as loud as 100% on 2 XL)
my 2 cents: 3 XL does sound better compare to 2 XL but the vibration is really bad.
Does the most recent update fix this issue? Anyone? Mine is rooted and I don't want to mess with updating lol
It could be psychosomatic but I think it fixed it a bit?
No, 2019 Jan update still not fix this yet.....

I have had 4 Nexus 5x, all BLOD. The last one finally went last week.
My wife has 6p, no BLOD yet but battery is no good after a year.
I have a pixel that bootloops. I have tried many firmware, once it took pie and once it took nougat. Both instances after an hour it went corrupt and BLOD.
So I finally learned my lesson after the pixel, I'm never buying Google again.
From what I can tell BLOD on the Pixel is a lot less common than on the 5x. I had a 5x and it gave up right on the 18 month mark as everyone said it would. You do hear of Pixels having this issue but I get the impression it's a much lower percentage. I certainly know of people that have launch devices still working.
I am waiting for the Pixel 4a but the ZenFone 6 has been tempting me with its battery, cpu and the camera setup. The only thing that the pixel will have over the 6 is the software updates.
If you were in my situation, which phone would you pick and why?
I bought a used ZF6 just a couple of days ago. Honestly? Who care about official OTA, this phone seems to be already weel mantained in terms of modding and ZenUI is really stock looking. In other words when Asus will be dropping the support (after Android 11 presumibly) you'll just have to unlock and flash a ROM and you'll probably get a couple of years more. Moreover you won't loose advantage of having one very good main camera as your selfie one as well (and it gets even better with GCam), a monster battery and a good HW.

pixel 4a. i currently own a zenfone 6 on t-mobile and have been having problems with voice calls and text messaging. sometimes calls from other people will go straignt to voicemail without the phone ever ringing or logging it as a missed call. i've missed several important calls because of this. text messages would sometimes come in minutes and even hours after the sender sent it to me. others have also experienced this on t-mobile and we're not sure if it's a t-mobile issue or asus issue. other than some other minor issues (apps freezing etc...) the phone has actually been pretty good. but in any case for me, a phone that can't do what it's fundamentally supposed to do is no good so i'm staying away from asus at least for now. my next phone will probably be a pixel.
I'm going to get an OG Pixel or Pixel XL, to use as a Google Photos uploader
(I'm ideally going to aim at the 128 GB model, if that is relevant)
I understand that both of these phones have been plagued with batteries bricking, and other bricking-issues
I want to know which one is the more reliable of the two. That-is, which is going to be more likely to last longer, used just as a simple uploader, without issue
Any thoughts?
I bought both.
Actually, I also bought two XL but returned one because of the battery issue... that XL would shut off randomly at like 20% and charging to 100% then restarting would show like 60%... but leaving it plugged in seemed fine. Either way, didn't want to risk it and the seller was willing to refund the phone.
Personally, i'd say get the non-XL version. Both phones get quite hot and may refuse to upload to Google Photos if they are too hot. My solution is to get a Black Shark FunCooler 2Pro (it's essentially a peltier cooler for your phone). It gets the Pixel back surface down to 17C and keeps Google Photos uploading happily.
