Best Rom and Kernel for Galaxy S6? - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Need your guys/girls opinions on what best stable Rom and Kernel at the moment for the galaxy s6 for everyday use.
Thanks ?

waiting for answer too

Personally, Frankenstein ROM + Aldeon Kernel.
Might change it to a AOSP-based ROM soon, like LOS14.1, but the camera with non-stock ROMs is worse. And on 8.0 and beyond, hardware encoding doesn't work so that's not even really an option - for me, at least.

Best rom?
Sir you want it... you get it
I am working at my website and trying to update it as often as possible.
There you get a bunch of the newest/best custom roms and ports for the S6!
Give me a feedback if possible

Bad idea for a website ?
I don't imagine you'll ever get a lot of traffic on it, considering that XDA is the go-to for ROMs and kernels, and people prefer to get their things directly from the source.
Design looks nice, though.

Ahhhmmm....

Thanks for that quick feedback!:good:
My website´s aim is to give JUST the BEST of custom stuff for the S6 and NOT ALL like XDA...
You can imagine my website as a place where just tested roms by myself are posted with a nice review!
I comparision to XDA I am the one and only person who can decide which Rom is going to be posted on my website(The dev of that rom ofcourse to) and there is the big difference!
You get 100% good and safe stuff for your device, because I did all the risky stuff by testing the roms already!
So I think you´re wrong mate... I surely will get a lot of traffic on my website

Might have to have a look at Frankenstein ROM and see how it is, do you know if there is any major bugs or heavy battery drain with that ROM?

No, none. Battery is quite well.
Honestly, it's been the best I've found. I've looked through most, if not all, ROMs that could be daily drivers. The Ultimate Nougat S8+ ROM isn't bad either, but it's more bloated - it does have extra features though.
Currently trying Resurrection Remix 6.0 (Oreo/AOSP). It's as I would've thought - aside of the camera being crap (which isn't really a thing about this ROM, but any AOSP ROM), everything else works well, except for the part where it heats up... A LOT.

Hi,
I am interested in that too, as Samsung won't update S6 further more.
What I understand is we have Resurrection and Frankenstein, that is it right?
No news on Cyanogenmod discontinued with no other stable alike. I used back then with S2.
I have a question though, what is port? I found some people asking "is that a rom or a port".
Thanks.

CyanogenMod is dead. LineageOS is its replacement.
LOS14 (Android 7.1.2) and LOS15 (Android 8.1) are the current ones.
Ports are ROMs as well. For example, an S8 port, is simply said a combination of an S6 and an S8 ROM in such a way that it'll work on the S6.
On one hand, you have TouchWiz-based ROMs, such as Frankenstein, Ultimate Nougat S8+, Nemesis Nougat, Global Elite, Superlite S8 (or something like that, I forget the name), a couple of A8+ Ports, etc. They look like Samsungs usually do. If you're looking for a ROM that's as stable as possible, this is your best bet.
On the other hand, you have AOSP-based ROMs, such as LineageOS. In the same category, you also have CrDroid, NexusOS, Resurrection Remix, AICP, AOSPExtended, XenonHD, OmniROM, AOKP, etc, but they are basically just LOS with extra features (don't mean to offend the devs or anything, but it's true). They look like stock Android - the way Pixel, or Nexus phones look. Latest features, quickest, but occasionally have bugs because of stuff being closed source.
And then, you also have ROMs like MIUI, which isn't TouchWiz, but isn't really AOSP either.

Just installed Frankenstein ROM + Aldeon Kernel and it seems pretty snappier than stock now, gonna test this out for 2weeks and see if everything is good.
Thanks
Edit: been testing it for a few weeks and seems great stable and smooth and battery life seems great. Might try out LOS and see how that preforms for abit.
*Recommend Frankenstein ROM + Aldeon Kernel as a daily as its really smooth. ?

Very informative post, thank you very much for your efforts
Would you support one more thing? What tool should I use to install a kernel and a ROM, not to mention take a complete backup first? There are some tutorials out there I know, but I have been out for a long time now, so I want to know the best programs and methods from a trusted source.
Thanks.

Well, there's not many options in that regard - just one, actually: TWRP. Most ROMs/kernels on this site can only be installed using it. It also does full backups (except of the internal storage like photos and such). It has to be flashed using Odin - considering how well known this device is, there should be plenty of step-by-step videos for that process.
It's also a good idea to have a stock firmware and Odin on your PC, in case something goes really bad and you have to start from the beginning. Probably won't happen, but just in case.

Ports/Roms
So a PORT is a similar Software(System) from another device which is ported to our (In this case the S6)... For example there are S8+ ports (So the S8+ software with some of its features which works on S6)...
You may check my website for stuff like that ^^

Whats the most sold KitKat Rom right now?

I'm on Gummy Nightly 4.4.2 and I'm looking for something more stable. Life is a bit hectic right now so I'm not able to constantly flash a new rom.
What has been the best 4.4.2 rom that you've had the most success with?
to each there own .

Beanstalk and Liquidsmooth! Waiting for the Pac-Man release!
If life is to hectic to find a rom I suggest stock.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I'm liking my PA 4.4 pa_d2vzw-4.0-BETA-20131208 that one it seems to be the only one with a functional camera so far.

Define "most solid"...
All you are going to get is people's limited opinions. Plus, if someone has only used 1 or 2 different ROMs - vs ALL of the ones available - they really can't comment

I meant to say "stable" I just want a rom where the basic functions like Camera work and I'm able to use instagram etc without it crashing. Gummy is fine, but not being able to use the camera is a big thing. I would like a multi-window feature that Hyperdrive has, but I'd like to stay at 4.4.2.
Also, no I will never go back to stock. As for those who have used one or two different roms their opinions are still valid. They can say whether it was stable or not.

A ROM with a non-functioning camera would never even get consideration from me ! Same applies to ROMs with no working data. Does the Gummy thread tell you the camera doesn't work ? I'd hope so !!
For what it's worth, I've tried the following KK ROMs (with my opinion/comments):
Beanstalk (Gideon's build) - good ROM, no complaints that I can recall.
Omni (Gideon's build) - too plain or simple (or boring) for me. Didn't have a few features that I've grown to like (I blame PAC for that !!). It was stable though.
LiquidSmooth (both the LS team version and Gideon's) - my preferred ROM at the moment. Runs fine, everything works, and has many of the features I like. Between two builds a week and a half apart, I see add'l things added too.
ParanoidAndroid (notta's build) - can't recall any details at the moment.
I suggest trying ParanoidAndroid 4.0 BETA. Yes, it is a beta but it is very stable. I have been using it since Notta switched to 4.4.x. The are still working out small bugs (like every other KK ROM), but like I said, it's very stable.
It does not have multi-window. For that I suggest Omni ROM. I've been using that on my ASUS TF300T and it works awesome!
As evident by some above commentary, XDA is not a support site and users are expected to test all Roms to make their own, independent, determinations as to what is stable for them.
Thread closed.

[LP Roms][Poll][Note3 Revive Team] Weekly Support Rom Vote, Which do you want?

Vote for your Favourite *Unsupported* Rom to be given weeklies!
Please Note i will only support the N9005, hlte.
Why?
Currently the amount of lollipop AOSP/CM based roms for the Note 3 is running a tad short for my liking, i believe in choice and i believe that if you have the hardware to do it, why not? I will be running this poll for a week to see which Roms you guys want to see rolling out for the Note 3 and i will roll them out to you on a weekly basis, i can probably build a few roms in a day so the top few will be what i choose to support.
If you want a Rom added to the Poll just ask me and i'll add it, so what are you waiting for? Vote and i'll start rolling them out!

This one probably is just wishful thinking, due to the fact that back on JB/KK it was very difficult for the dev, now with LP it will be even more difficult.
There used to be a ROM for the S4 named BlackBox.
It was a hybrid between TouchWiz and AOSP, the dev ported AOSP frameworks and libraries to work with TouchWiz. The ROM was SICK. And not easy to do. Not sure if the ROM had an altogether different kernel or any TW kernel could work.
Wishful thinking... :/

That is probably beyond my skills as ive never ported, only built from source, however i'll get in touch with the developer of that Rom and see if he is willing to lend a hand to try get that going for the Note 3, i honestly thought there would be more interest on this thread thou..

As odd as it is, I got used to the close-to-stock TW ROMs. Don't mistake me, AOSP ROMs are fast as Hell, way more moddable, more beautiful, and I like that. However, for the way I use my Nope 3, close to stock suits my needs better.

It's rare you find a samsung device where people are actually happy with Touchwizz
So is no one interested in suggesting weeklies for an AOSP Rom? Or perhaps i should make a custom stock (Not that there are enough already)?

I believe it might be something like this...
The user base needs something entirely different from the two (three if you count MIUI) options, we've got used to it. And some people might have the ideas for something different but lack the skills to do it. On one side you have AOSP (most of the AOSP ROMs function and behave almost the same; simple fact, not bashing the work of anyone, I don't have the knowledge to bash it ), on the other - TouchWiz. Both have their uses.
I lack the knowledge on how to do it, apparently the whole team of Samsung that makes TouchWiz doesn't (xDDDDDDDDDDDDD)... to combine all the functionality of the device at it's top performance with a really sleek UI implementation that's different enough to make the user treat and use the device differently.
Otherwise, I'd theme TW with black, grey, blue, holo colors n stuff and make the UI look like the control panel of some spaceship seen in sci-fi. The device itself carries the "Galaxy" moniker, ffs, and Samsung made it sound and look like a f***ing toy!
Making an AOSP ROM then stabilizing it, from what I've read, is no easy task for the whole Google team, it seems...
I am afraid that the Note 3 simply lacks the attraction to crackheaded devs who would tear Ubuntu Touch's a** in half, merge it with AOSP then slap that combination on top of whatever's left of TouchWiz. xD We have most of the major AOSP ROMs, can't tweak too much TW because of it's damn closed source, and... that's that. :/
Sorry if this was incoherent.
P.S. I am also sorry if any of this seems disrespectful, I don't mean it to be, given the fact that you're willing to actually build the ROM that's most demanded. Wish you luck.
Those are 2 recognize ROMs since my Nexus 5.

Haven't tried SuperLuminal's version yet, but the CM12.1 version you find here on XDA is working fine. There are a few bugs, but nothing a reboot can't handle...
Just keep in mind, that both are unofficial builds of CM12.1, as the CM Team haven't made an official version (yet - or perhaps it might never happend)
But give the SuperLuminal's version a shot - and tell us about your experience.

Thanks for response. Is cm12.1 smoother than miui? I find mi4c with miui less responsive than my old oneplus one with cm13. It's quite disappointing that my new mi4c is more laggy than 2years old OPO. Will that unofficial cm12.1 fix it a little? Or just snapdragon 808 is way slower than old 801?

Coming from OnePlus One as well, but with CM 12s, for that little time I spend using stock MIUI, I did not notice any lack or the phone being slower than the OPO. Actually MIUI ran pretty damn fast on the MI 4c - but the reason I moved away from the official, was because Kaspersky found malware on the ****ing phone. So maybe you should check you phone for malware or any unwanted apps. Depending on where you got the phone, it might have been tampered with.
Maybe, you should try to disable/freeze any apps you do not like first and see if that helps.
Anyway, if it's a faulty model you've received, you might want to return it...
Well this cm 12.1 has the nav bar working with capacitive keys disabled while the other one has it still enabled. I'm sure it will be fixed.
Jonas you probably had a reseller modified rom flashed. The EU rom doesn't have any malware.
Hi guys. I use TS rom for a few days. It is very smooth, likewise the Xiobai rom. Everything is working, except...edge double tap. Of course, you can enable it, but then ehile typing on any keyboard (aosp, google), it causes random backs. This feature is super while surfing on internet, but in real life it is too hmm anoying. I don't even touch edges and keyboard hides. When disable- not. It is my only complain. Battery and smoothness are very good. At night with lte enabled takes 1-2%. Best regards from Poland.

Xiaomi Service Framework Mod not work for me
I'm testing SuperLuminal CM 12.1 port from yesterday. It works pretty well so far; edge double tap is OK and didn't cause any unexpected behaviour in my usage.
There is no issue of DT2W not working after booting from recovery (that issue is present on Xiaobai's port, you have to reboot once from the ROM to have DT2W back).
Other than that the two ROMs are pretty much the same to me; Xiaobai's one might feel a little bit smoother in my opinion, but really a tiny bit.
I'm trying to get rid of any stuttering playing with entropy settings in Kernel Adiutor, will report back if I'll find anything useful.

Just wanted to say that I experienced the same thing. I had a Nexus 4 with Minimal OS (Android 6.0) and it was sadly faster than the Mi4C.
I'm not saying that the Mi4C is slow. It is fast. But i was expecting something more. Expecially while typing (as write here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-4c/help/expected-t3274918) i can feel the difference.
The Mi4C also have some micro-lag during transition that take away some joy on the daily use..
I'm probably going to try one of theese CM12.1 and see if i can get the same responsiveness i had with the N4
New rom is out now in Team Superluminal site.

It is pretty stable. I'll been using TS PAC-rom 5.1.1 now for few days and I haven't noticed anything. But like our news says, IT IS UNDER TESTING for now. So if you like to try, take a backup of your current rom. And if you don't like it, you can revert back where you was.
There is lots of options/features from great roms. Like the PACman roms slogan goes "ALL IN ONE"
Does it have nav bar option?
Piston Headset problem under CM
I1m using the Mokee 5.1.1 Rom and its really great, I only have one big problem with it: My 3-button Piston2 headset doesn't work properly, only the play/pause button responds as it should, the volume rockers only open the dialer. It worked perfectly under Miui, but I love these custom roms much more!
Is it possible, to find a solution for this problem?! I'd love to try your rom, especially if there's any chance it will work!

Rom suggestions

I'm getting fairly bored with the roms i've been using which have been 13.1 builds and lineageOS.
It's been a bit since I've experimented and I havent really got the time too.
Since Android 7 theres been new devs/roms, can any one suggest any?
Not bothered about features, just want best performance/battery (mainly performance though) also, open to kernel suggestions. Thanks. :good::silly:

Perhaps an AOSP rom may do the work.

is general gsi roms good enough

is general gsi roms good enough for our device or is it better to wait for specific rom that is well modified for our device??? In other words is there any general gsi rom that is good enough and has major hardware parts working (camera, wifi, hotspot, brightness, bluetooth... Etc) ???
Thanks
Has anyone tried Havoc OS ROM ?
Generally speaking they're good enough to use assuming you can get them installed on you phone. I was using Phh's unofficial Ressurection Remix Rom for a while, and the biggest issue I had was the fingerprint sensor acting as a mouse button when the screen was on. Otherwise everything was very smooth and worked like what I expected them too. Battery life might have been a bit worse than it was on MIUI. I've had similar results on all of Phh's ROMs, although I haven't really tried images from too many other developers.
Installing them can be a struggle. It seems like half of the time I try to flash one I need to wipe everything on the phone to get it to work, but other times I can flash them with no issues. That's not specific to GSI images though. I've probably wiped my phone (system and storage contents) half a dozen times because I accidentally soft bricked my phone trying to flash something. That's probably more user error more than anything else.
I have also never been able to get gapps to flash on a GSI ROM. I've always had to use ones with them built in.
I ended up going back to MIUI because the GCam mod wasn't working properly, and a large reason for buying the phone was for the camera. I'll probably go back to Treble images once the major ROMs start releasing Pie variants, assuming we don't get some native ROMs first.
Anyone else get a trebble rom to work yet?

I flashed a lot of them. Most have bugs as you can imagine e but that's not the rom's or devs fault.
I had installed
Official Resurrection ReMix
Phh treble AOSP
Pixel Experience version 8.1 and 9
Polaris Pixel experience
Google extended
All with similar bugs/features. The 8.1 versions work pretty well, the pie versions have all the same bugs. But they are daily driver material in my opinion if you can do without some functions. Some of them have enough no working camera, others have trouble with NFC and bluetooth.
Others have distorted sounds (which can be easily fixed).
Just browse the treble development thread and find out what fits best for you.
I'm using pixel experience official 8.1 and 9 unofficial (on two separate MiMix2S) and so far it works for me.
I think the best by now is the official 8.1 PE rom. Most of the things I'm using do work really well. Now I'm eagerly waiting for the Polaris Pixel Experience Pie rom...hope it will arrive soon.
I think we own a not very popular device so devs are rare but there are some of them doing a great job and working on those issues. Maybe some could donate some bucks like I did to keep them motivated and show some appreciation for their hard work.
I've had the best experience with the Benzo 9.0 ROM.
How is the camera on GSI roms? One of the reasons I updated from the mix 2 to the mix 2s was for the camera.
Is it comparable to MIUI?, or total ****?
I am using the AOSP 9.0 rom by @phhusson: https://github.com/phhusson/treble_experimentations/releases
Apart from the camera, I'm not aware of any known issues. Bluetooth, NFC, Sound and Calling issues have all been resolved (thank you very much @phhusson). I guess there are other issues I did not hit yet
The camera app I use is from here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xi...ed-p-mix2s-t3838406/post77529938#post77529938
Its possible to take good pictures (without color issues) but some feature like HDR, portrait don't work.
As a base for this rom, I use the most current global beta from here:

So it's basically a link to a ROM we already know...or is there any device specific features included?
If it's the aosp ROM by phhusson it's stock Android and works smooth but lacks some features IMHO. Nothing fancy but a great leap forward in treble development. Great guy developing good and stable roms.

Install this and be a happy little camper:

Using it as my daily driver now. Almost all bugs sorted out that bothered me with the gsi images.

Why don't you try it for yourself and report how it's working? I'm interested too, maybe this has some features I could use.
