Was anyone of you successful to get Netflix running in 1080p?
I received my OP6 today. As I wasn't offered Netflix in Play Store, I downloaded the apk directly from Netflix and installed it. Netflix is working, but I don't seem to get 1080p running though my network connection is fine (28 MBit/s).

I downloaded Netflix from Google play just fine, how did you check what resolution is playing?
I just checked it by watching, and it is very "pixely", hence for sure no 1080p. Does an unlocked bootloader matter? Root is not installed yet.
Edit: Ok, I guess I found the problem. My OP6 isn't passing safety net (CTS profile match fail). Will have to install Magisk.
Unlocked bootloader = no netflix in play store. At least for me. Quality seems pretty good but no idea how to display the resolution used.
Netflix was in play store for me [emoji16]

I found out now that unlocking the bootloader turns Widevine from L1 to L3. Relocking the bootloader doesn't bring back L1.
But with Magisk installed I pass SafetyNet now and Netflix seems to have a high resolution.
Is there any way to find out the actual resolution of a Netflix stream?
I had to download the apk directly as it did not show up in the Play Store for me. I can't tell what the resolution is, but it looks sharp enough.
But apparently a lot of people have looked into this and the consensus seems to be that unlocking the bootloader will block HD content.
I don't get HD streaming on Netflix even though I pass the SafetyNet test.
Unfortunate.
I always find Netflix shows just seem very dark on the 6 as if the brightness is turned down. Really difficult to see stuff sometimes and seems like everything is filmed at night.

Yes makes little difference, still not really watchable. This is watching over 4g not that it should really make any difference.
Netflix is playing in 1080p on my OP6 - looks crisp and even crispier with brightness all the way up. Running on wifi and using Planet Earth to test.

Same here. With everything hidden in Magisk I am definitely getting HD in Netflix and Prime Video. No blurriness or pixelation at all.

This is exciting. Netflix/Amazon streaming is the only reason I haven't rooted yet. Any idea as to how this is possible when the 5 and 5T weren't able to get HD streaming?
Could any other rooted users check their streaming quality?

No idea, sorry. It's possible there's been some change in how the OP6 handles DRM.

Yes, just search for "Test Patterns" and play one of the videos, it will show you the current resolution (use original video size, if it's zoomed to fit the screen you can't see the resolution).
Strangly, my OP6 just gets HD (1280x720) but not Full HD (1920x1080).

Is your bootloader locked or unlocked? Netflix streaming quality can be selected in account settings at www.netflix.com/YourAccount -> Playback settings.
Edit: I'm running a bootloader-locked OP6, and the "Test Patterns" videos always shows 1280x720 no matter what my playback settings are set to.

I am a new android/captivate buyer. Try as I might (googled for a few hours) I could not find anything on the Captivate and it's Hd playback. My question is:
Is there a way I can play Youtube HD on my Captivate via stream? (and NO I don't mean High Quality I mean straight up HD *720p*.).
I'm just mad the iphone 4 can and I can't find a way to do it on my captivate.
Thanks
Jose
If you are connected via wifi, I believe it defaults to the highest..on 3g it defaults to low and you have to click thne menu button, go to 'More' and go to high quality. Someone will correct me if Im wrong
Neither the iPhone 4 nor any Android phone has 720p screen resolution. If the iPhone 4 is telling you it is displaying at 720p, it is either cropping or compressing the video.
However, the Samsung Captivate and many other Android phones are essentially at 480p HD resolution, which is what setting the videos to High Quality should display (bump it up to 480p playback).

That is the way it works on our version of Youtube. The newer version has a more conveniently placed HQ button and allows you to set HQ as the default.
I might add the Captivate also plays 720p and 1080p (though really it's pointless) video files quite well. And UNLIKE the iPhone 4, you don't have no encode everything in MP4/H.264 to play them. Thank you Samsung for native MKV and AVI container support...
And yes, the Captivate's screen resolution is lower than 720p (assuming a pixel for pixel representation), but in practice if you're watching a movie or tv show, it looks way better if the file is 720p as opposed to 480p.
Man... Why does the iPhone 4's videos look SO much more crisp than my dear Samsung? They can't beat the vividness of the display though Hopefully youtube can be updated to play sharper videos for android later down the line. These screen resolutions are getting more epic every year. Thanks for replying guys.
I seem to be getting poor quality from the MHL to HDMI adapter...it's like the output is the same resolution as the phone's display (800x480) and it's just stretched to fit the screen...makes it look I'm watching an old DVD... Anybody else experiencing this? And is there a fix?
I'm also having this problem as well as the adapter not pushing Audio to the TV at all. Really frustrating.

it will do this anytime it mirrors the screen. it seems the video player can switch to the mhl output only where i'd assume it plays the native resolution of the video. unfortunately i havent had a chance to test it on a high quality video.

Okay, so if video plays at a high quality, then why do still pictures still look like crap? Do I have to use a special player for these too?
Seems to be application dependant to me. I tried the HBO GO app the first time I connected my phone to the TV and the quality looked pretty bad. But when I tried some of the HD movie trailers that came preloaded they looked really nice. Not Bluray quality but I'd say they were as good as most 720p streaming services.
I think the HBO mobile app limits the streaming quality so that
a: it works better on small screens
b: you won't want to connect it to a tv
I also downloaded a 720p mvk of Dr Who and tried playing it over HDMI and it looked almost as good as when I play it on my HTPC.

+1 on the HBO GO app... I just wish it would transfer true HD quality to the big screen.
i think only samsung specific apps will be able to use high res. it seems that if the phone screen is on it will be in wvga resolution, the video processor wont put out 2 resolutions at the same time. with the video player specifically it will turn off the phone screen so it is not mirroing a low res picture but instead it is switching to a different video mode entirely. we can only hope that they give us a better photo gallery app that can do this as well and that 3rd party apps will be able to detect mhl and switch to mhl only mode.

Ugh...any known mhl apps for viewing still pictures? Tried googling but I just seem to be getting a lot of Nhl hits...
This one is ridiculous. Google Widevine Modular DRM on our phones is L3 - which means HD videos are not supported on this services! Guess it works with HBO GO the same way cause the quality is nothing to HD to be honest.
You can check it youself with this app .
Security level L3 - no HD. Needs to be L1 to work. This is pretty much Huawei's fault.
So please open your HiCare and send them feedback to update it!
Tweet - Facebook post on Huawei Mobile page would be nice too.
Honestly I dont see the problem AND really big difference between hd stream and normal 480p/720p. Especially taking in to the account that its 5.2 inch screen...
Its the same with Youtube, you would need to stick your face literally 10cm from the screen to see difference between SD and HD on such screen, because of compression that they use.
Normally people watch videos about 30-50cm from the phone and I can bet you that I could show you two movies one streamed sd other hd and you will have hard time to distinguish them from each other. Difference is visible when you read something, or need to focus on small details, but its not important in streamed movies.
Im of course with you to send them such feedback, because it should be there, sometimes you stream some stuff that have lots of details that you need to see, but I would be more happy to send feedback to google, netflix and amazon to optimize their stream compression that just suck.
I have lots of 480p videos on my phone and with proper compression they look better than some 1080 youtube videos...

Facepalm ???
Actually there is a difference. I am using HBO GO and the quality is bad compared to a phone that suports the HD streaming or my Laptop which is with a lot bigger screen... Still a flagship phone not supporting such a simple and needed thing is ridiculous.

Don't think it will be possible.
Hi,
I’m experiencing difficulties sending Videos using WhatsApp on the U12+, and I’d like to ask if anyone else has had the same issue? The problems have been...
1) WhatsApp throws up an error message, telling me that the video cannot be sent and that I should try another file.
2) Audio within some sent videos is corrupted (loud screeching/crackling noises).
If my mind serves be correctly, the problem seems to happen mostly with videos where I have zoomed in at some point. However, I because 95% of affected videos never sent in the first place - I can’t check back through my history to be sure that I’m right about that.
I found a German forum where somebody asked the same question, but no clear answer was found (although there was a suspicion that it had something to do with the audio recording mode). Additionally, the Play Store only has only one app review from a U12 user and he/she also refers to problems sending video.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Craig.
Got the same type of issue with Facebook Messenger, where the app was complaining about this "mp4 video format" not supported.
I recorded it with HTC camera app in 1080p 60fps.
No issue anymore if recorded in 1080p 30fps. Have a try...

I ran across something interesting yesterday when I was researching YouTube compatibility with the U12+'s videos.
What is your audio set to, 3D or High Res? High Res results in the video being saved as an .mkv, which isn't widely supported. 3D results in a fileformat that I'm unsure of, but it's apparently common enough to upload.

Crap, sorry. I thought it was worth a shot.
Ni,
I had the same problem but unfortunately those times that happened to me I was not able to give an explanation ... I also assumed that it was a problem of use zoom but in the last wrong posting I had a video without apperenti problems of 42 seconds converted in 11MB he didn't want to go. So today I tried all the combinations of options that I found in the camera and the only one that gave me an error in sending was when I selected sonic zoom audio.
The real problem is that I think that in some way changing from the front camera to the normal one somehow changes the option, or during some updates.
So my advice is to check before registering if this mode is active.
For example in the last test I've recorded with the normal camera with high resolution audio then set to 3d audio. Now in the front camera I find high resolution audio but in the front I never touched options and I'm sure that before the beginning of my tests it was on 3D audio.
Has anybody found a modded Netflix apk?
OnePlus worked together with Netflix to provide UHD HDR content on the OnePlus 7 Pro, unfortunately the security level changes after unlocking the bootloader from L1 to L3, which means DRM ruins the experience on the phone because it removes HD movies and shows.
And yes, after relocking the bootloader the security level should revert back to L1, but I really enjoy using things like V4A, YouTube Vanced, Titanium Backup, AdAway and so on

Just got to know from Netflix customer service, there was never UHD support for any phone. All phone plays only in HD 720p with HDR (Only supported devices). For unlocked bootloader 480p.
Check below link for list of HD and HDR supported phones and tablet.

This is unacceptable in my opinion. HDR for mobile devices? Hell yeah! But limiting resolution to 720p is a joke. I pay the full subscription fee every month to watch 4k content and still don't get above 720p movies on my smartphone/tablet. HDR 720p does look nice, maybe a good compromise in comparison with 1080p, but definitely not as good as 1440p non-HDR!
you can scream all over, but it will change nothing. such is netflix
Yes. I need free petrol too.
