All hope abandon ye who enter here - Lenovo P2 Guides, News, & Discussion

I thought that this post was best placed on the Lenovo forum but apaarently not, as it mysteriously dissappeared straight after I posted it. Perhaps those ownsers will find this one -
"Why Lenovo P2 is not getting Nougat update in UK?" – 25 pages and counting…
"Update to Android O" – 31 pages and counting…
"Unable to sync gmail contacts properly" – 18 pages and counting…
"Re: P2 - Notification Problem!" – 4 pages and counting…
And that doesn’t include all the other threads relating to these subject, there and on other sites.
Lenovo, or more specifically, the people at Lenovo should be ashamed. Not because they have created something with defects, no-one/nothing is perfect, but because they aren’t willing (or able) to come out and admit it. It would save a great deal of time, effort and possibly money, if someone in a position we could trust would just state, in writing, that –
There won’t be any security or operating software updates for the P2.
There will be/is no software/settings fix for the lack of notification and/or contacts sync.
Software changes are fairly cheap and simple (if anything relating to modern tech could be described as such) whereas hardware is not.
Just admit that, embarrassing as it may be, the P2 is flawed.
Promise your P2 customers that you’ve made changes to the way you do things and that (hopefully) it won’t happen again.
Thank those same customers for buying the P2 in the first place and apologize that you’ve let them down. Maybe then, some of those customers (and new ones) might buy Lenovo products.
Or is it too much to acknowledge that Motorola could do it but they couldn’t?
Or are they too worried that Google, not wanting to be linked with the bugs, will end their agreement to allow them to use Android?
On paper, the P2 is a great piece of kit, that’s why I bought one. However, if all I wanted was something to make and receive calls and to send and receive texts (plus a few extras), I’d still be using my 5310 with its replaceable battery. If I could afford to, I’d buy something else now but, safe to say, when I can, it won’t be a Lenovo, or a Motorola, just in case they get infected by association. Maybe a Google phone, you’d think that they would know how the software and hardware will work together, and I’ll get updates.

I clearly understand why you're fed up with it. Lenovo does really nearly to nothing to support the P2.
In my case, I knew from the get to that I would reflash my phone with a custom rom since stock never came close to them. In any case.
I have used stock AOSP on this phone as well, bugless, fast and stable.
Custom rom can have bugs as well but they are fixable or at least not noticeable. Not all of them though.

Another option to add to the list and something (as a newcomer to Android and mobile phone modding) I'm having to learn and it's a pretty steep learning curve.
After going round in ever decreasing circles until I very nearly disappeared up my own orifice over the last few months, I decided to do nothing and to just put up with things as they are. For every post that says what they did helped, there is another saying it didn’t work for them and for every updated OS there is one asking how to get back to Stock MM.
Stock ROMs, Rooting, 7, 7.1.2, 8, 8.1…the options seem endless and scary! If someone else bricks you phone, at least you can blame them but if you bring the misery on yourself…
You say you used a stock AOSP, If you don't mind, could you say which one and how you did it (with any snags you came across). You also note that there are still some bugs. What are they? If I can live with them instead of the ones I’ve got, I certainly consider doing it.

For first time you can't go wrong with the official LineageOS. Just go to their website and check the wiki, it has a comprehensive guide for flashing from the beginning and it will be fine if you follow it.

Apologies for being so hesitant but having never done it before, it's a big, scary step (where have I heard that before...oh, yes...). You used the word "official", there are lots of LineageOS for the Lenovo P2 but no mention of "official", is one of the nightly builds okay to use?

Yes, but I wouldn't recommend los 14.1
Use a Oreo rom by subham or firelord.

Can We See If It's Dying Before Scheduling the Funeral?

I have been reading the same information as the rest of you about the VS G-Tablet, Staples and now Sears.
And I wonder how everyone is coming up with such wild suppostions based on almost NO really factual information.
Staples recall of inventory is a fact. I noticed that they are returning stock to VS because of some kind of flaw. We don't know what it is. We don't know if it is terminal or fixable. We don't know anything about remedies.
But whatever it is, it's not serious enough for them to start calling or notifying customers to return units and get their money back?!? If it really is a fatal hardware flaw, surely they will not get by without taking care of customers who already have purchased tablets.
Seems to me we need more info about why Staples did what they did and what is wrong before anything realistic can be determined.
Also, someone reported Sears is following Staples' path. Not trying to flame the poster, but we have (1) a report of no stock in that area (No Big Deal -- we never had any here!! ); and (2) we have an employee (not likely management at the level that would cover Sears corporate operations) saying they've had a lot of returns and don't know when they'll get any (again, nothing new there). Certainly not a stock recall like Staples.
I was in one of the area Sears stores here today and the little cardboard display they put up when they don't have VS G-Tablets in stock was still there. In fact, it had been updated to show the $379.00 price available today.
My point is that until we find out what the problem is that Staples is using as a reason for their action -- we really are just wasting our time speculating. And I certainly think the news media and the A**** fanboys are just spewing the garbage I would expect of them.
Am I the only person around who has noticed that a pile of us -- ranging from devs and hardware experts, down to just every day good old folks -- have been using, programming and flogging the G-Tablet for what (five-six weeks now?) and not one of us has raised a report of a fatal flaw????????????????
Sure. Grant that VS and whoever didn't do an adequate job of development and rushed the G-Tab to market. Grant that the software is not what we think is needed nor what we want. I can see that if it worked faster and better, it might be okay for some basic users.
Those of us who want more seem to be doing all right.
And one by one we have been fixing things.
Speaking for myself, I am not writing off the G-Tablet yet. I have two -- one from Sears and one from Office Depot. I could run down and return both right now.
But I'm not. I'm going to use the stuff that is available to me now to make both work like I want. Whatever else someone may say, it will do what I want it to do with the resources we already have on hand. And unless everyone else gives up, I see no reason we can't go right on and stay ahead of all the folks who are not smart enough to see the potential and go after it.
I am the minister -- so please don't start on plans for the funeral until the patient is pronounced dead for real. I don't see anything remotely close to that yet!
Rev
P. S. -- Sorry this rant got so long, but I just felt someone had to put some balance into what is being said about all of this. And I intended no flames for anyone who may disagree with my point of view. I am a minister and I am redemptive -- it's my job to try to "save" things!!
100% agreed...
As long as they release the kernel source, I don't really care whether Viewsonic recalls all their G Tablets or not. Because I am 100% certain there will be lots of other Tegra 2 tablets which will ship with updated firmware, which will give us a base image for Gingerbread and for Honeycomb down the road. As long as there's somebody willing to compile kernels and glue a kernel into the ROM images from very similar devices, well, we'll be just fine here and the G Tablet will continue to provide us with plenty of useful life over the next few years.
From what I can see from an earlier thread about a poster mentioning using the fact that several of the abilities the gtablet has on the cover do not work out of the box to return the tablet without having to pay the restocking fee. I believe that Sears and Staples are sending the units back to viewsonic and demanding that the touted abilities actually do in fact work before they get them back. (this can only help the tablet unless Viewsonic decides to give up.)
I really hope it stays around, Bought one for the wife, now I want one. (I got a nook color that behaves even worse out of the box. but I figure i'll root/rom it until it does work as the smaller size is definitely more portable.)
Even if Viewsonic were to give up I don't see our tablet caring much. The Zpad firmware works pretty well, the VegaN that I am running now is working very well, and TnTLite works pretty well.
I feel for the customers that bought this and are not techies. I recall the first time I turned mine on it was a barrage of force closes. Everything you touched would force close. It took a factory reset from the settings menu to make it stop. Flash was non-existent, clock had amnesia on wakeup, wifi lost it's mind.... If I was a regular customer I would have been PO'ed... Not known what to do, and it would have gone back with a "I will NEVER buy another Viewsonic product ever" mentality.
If all the above had not occurred out of the box this tablet may have been kept by more people. I'm sure lots of folks would have been plenty happy if it just worked. Most would not have known the real potential that was being strangled by the software overlay, and most would not care.
I think the biggest issue has to do with how things are sold in this country nowadays. Back when America made things, they had control of them. They touched them, tested them, and had a lot of pride in making sure they sold a good product. Viewsonic gained it's reputation by selling one of the best products.
This tablet is not made by Viewsonic. I don't really know how much Viewsonic had to do with it besides just signing on to have there name on the device in hopes of name recognition boosting sales. It reminds me of how companies sign athletes to endorse crappy products in hopes people will buy it because of the name. That is going to bite a lot of companies in the behind. Unless my perception of how American companies desire to do business is completely wrong then this path needs to stop.
Everything seems to need to be done as fast as possible, and with profit being the main goal. Who cares if it is the best.. Who cares if it could be better.. Just get it out there and make money.. Support? Why should we support our product? Why should we put a restore image online? Why should we update our website with info that might help folks understand what is being done about the issues?
This same stuff is happening with lots of companies. Sylvania is another example of the outsourced spin off type of product, there are many others.
I think we deserve better, and if a company has to have there rear end handed to them to figure out that quality, and customer satisfaction still counts then so be it....
If and I mean if VS decided to bail on the gtablet I would think they open the source code to the community. This is a great device.
At this point it doesn't matter, even if viewsonic abandons it.
It's a reference tegra 2 device for current app developers in the states (at least that's how I see it), we have badass roms for it, the advent vega is getting 2.3 which is easily ported...so it's all good.
No mystery
Nice posts. But there is no mystery that VS is getting these back. It's about their profit from sales of a marketable product. Whether this tablet goes the wayof the Edsel is immaterial to us afficianados but its still been a good ride. I think other tabs may sink us but so what.
It's still fun.
Mojav
here's my take on it, and what they need to fix for Joe Consumer
I can readily guess why these are going back, and a Staples rep I talked to actually mentioned that same thing. The stock firmware is bad.
But I don't mean just the Tap N' Tap UI, I mean the boot loops and FC's that occur. We've all seen them, even on TnT Lite. There is some instability that I am convinced has to do with how these devices were imaged.
Here's the problem -- here in XDA, we have clockworkmod and a great community to get us around those issues. But Joe Consumer has neither (unless they search on their own). And due to TnT's stupidity, they can't even download an offline update to at least attempt to fix the problems. Think about it...you're a user with a reboot loop, so you call Viewsonic for help. What can they do? There's no way to wipe the cache, wipe user data or even re-flash the device using the standard tools. It's insane.
What they need to do ASAP is deploy a firmware update that 1) can be run offline with a microSD card and 2) has a more enhanced recovery like clockworkmod to at least give the user the ability to wipe the user data or cache. And, if the user doesn't have a microSD card, they should send them a 1GB card, preinstalled with the recovery image, at no charge. I think it's an absolute requirement I hope VS are reading this and rip their TnT devs a new arse to fix this debacle before they give up on the device completely.
Still, worse case scenario is that we lose VS support but still have the zPad and Vega to look at, even it we don't have source. We have options, at least.

I love my tablet and think it so much better than my friends ipad, but the issiues do bother me.....but I'll never return it, just want to fix it

When I got my very first device (before TnT Lite existed), it was terrible. Lots of FC's, and at least twice it rebooted on me for no reason and wiped my user data. As I recall, doing a manual data wipe helped but it was never really fully stable until I wiped it with nvflash (the bekit image).
Since then, they only time I've ever seen major instability is either when testing mods, which is understandable, or going back to stock.

Well.... We have to go back in history. (Only about 6 weeks ago)
The force closes "Might" go away if you can get into settings and find the factory reset selection. It may be under the privacy tab. I can't tell you for sure because I am not running TnT right now.
The wifi issue was a problem when the device woke up and there was a patch made by a smart guy named Bekit.
The time issue was something where the time zone would not stick. It would always reset itself back to GMT if I recall.
There were patches for all of them back then, and I had them all installed at one point. None are needed anymore.
My suggestion to you, if you actually want to keep the tablet is to read the instructions in the post below and flash a new rom. TnTLite is based on your stock firmware. It just has the bad parts removed, and good stuff put in. All of the major issues should hopefully go away. As Roebeet just told you Nvflash could be in your future to do a clean wipe but I hope not. The stock out of the box firmware is really bad. It is unfortunate because the hardware is really good.

No, nvflash is fairly advanced stuff so I wouldn't recommend it unless you are fairly technical or if its the last resort. You need APX drivers setup on your PC as well as the nvflash image.
Try a user data wipe, as a first step. In stock, it's under Settings and Security, I believe. If that doesn't help, I'd recommend clockworkmod recovery next and try to do a clear cache, user data wipe and a SD partition fix, in that order (do the next if the previous one doesn't fix it). I'd do nvflash last.
I personally love nvflash, but like I mentioned you need to be somewhat technical to use it.
See the FAQ area under my sig for some pointers and links, to start you off with.

NVflash is the bomb... Finding the full sdk anymore... that sucks
juda222000,
Hang in there. I have been working on my second G-Tab and when I started it up, it worked worse than the first one did!!!
But it seems to me like if you just keep using common sense and rebooting to give it time to sort things out, and then using the info in these forums to get it together -- all will turn out well and you will have a really great tablet.
Just be patient and don't get ahead of yourself and cause yourself grief like I have done a couple of times!! Best wishes....
Rev
I personally suspect that the fatal flaw is no high price contract with a network provider.
As was stated.....if there really was a fatal hardware flaw we would almost definately know about it on this forum. The stock UI was poor but still not fatal. I would tend to agree that we need far more info before jumping to a conclusion about the life expectancy of this most excellent device (after a few mods).

[Q] Warranty WARNINGS about MODS

"For this guide, it is not necessary to root the Viewsonic G Tablet in order to flash CyanogenMod. You can simply install ClockworkMod Recovery & continue on.
WARNING: INSTALLING CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY ON THE VIEWSONIC G TABLET WILL VOID THE WARRANTY."
(I would imagine though that all of this stuff can be erased? If it voids the warranty, then why in the world would anyone ever put it on there if it can't be undone...?)
I have to say up front, that I haven't had any of the major issues that everyone is going on and on about. I had the one time occurrence of the barrage of "Force Quits" that happened the moment I got it out of the box... But in less than 30 min, the 3389 Update was available and I haven't had one issue since.
The only 2 things that I was worried about was the ability to watch Youtube, which I found that as long as you view the original "Desktop" version of youtube then you have no problems... The Desktop version was a simple click of a link at the bottom of the Youtube Mobile Page... Fixed... Done...
(My only REAL Question)
The other problem that I had, and am still having, is simply trying to get my Gmail account to unload in the "E-Mail" application that came with the G Tab. It says to check my incoming mail settings, which I did, and still can't quite figure that out... Any ideas?
Other than that though, this thing has given me nothing short of a good experience. I'm not too savvy with the MOD aspect of everything, but I would think that if I put that on my system, that I would have the mods themselves to blame for anything that went wrong..... And I certainly wouldn't want to jeopardize my Warranty just to have gmail pop up 3 weeks faster than Viewsonic can pay it's employees to pump out updates.... I'm giving them time, as I would hope any customer base would give me if I were the manufacturer.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the cool little gadget... That's how I see it. It has a crap ton of potential, and I'm willing to watch this infant grow without boosting it full of steroids and blackmarket performance drugs... Last thing I want is a third arm that doesn't work growing out of it's face............
I want to apologize for posting this twice. I'm really new to this forum, and couldn't find where to erase this post... I filed it under a different title in this same forum, so sorry again if I offend any of you with my multipost...
~Poly
I actually use the Gmail app, not the Email app (modded Tnt Lite with gapps).
The mod warnings are for a reason - we have to assume that not everyone understands the implications of modding their device and they should know that it is a risk. And if you call Viewsonic after doing a mod like this and need help from them, they aren't going to support it (and I guess I can't blame them for that).
Can this be uninstalled?
Can clockworksmod be uninstalled? If so how?

If you flash stock, and specifically recent stock, it should wipe clockworkmod recovery as well.
Thanks you for your help!
Does this mean if there is a hardware failure on the tab, and you have installed any of the updates found HERE, you have voided warranty and Viewsonic will not repair?
I'm still trying to understand the flashing et al.
So ANY of the mods from this site would then be a warranty void?
Is there a reversal to the mods that would allow warranty?
Thanks
I don't think they would honor the warranty, that's correct. It's a risk... all the mods are a risk.
Granted, they may not be able to see the mod unless they go into APX mode and pull your system.img, but anything obvious could be something they might latch onto (like if you modded the bootloader screen or have VEGAn's "GTabDevs" bootup screen).
Imo, the best reversal before RMA'ing for a hardware problems is nvflash - it will get you back to a clean vanilla stock setup, with all the boot images fixed as well as the system image. It's called "covering your tracks".
Modding
I look at it like this.... I paid roughly $400.00 for my tab(with tax). I understand that technology is moving SOOOO fast that my tab will be completely out of date in a matter of months. I bought my tab to have fun with, and part of the fun I want to have is to push it to see how far it will go. I guess in the end if I destroy my tab I will only be out the 400 bucks, but the other side of it is I can learn a helluva lot about rooting and flashing ROMS on an android device that I will(hopefully be able to) replace within a year.
Without Vegan and TNTLite, the GTablet would be worth roughly $0 to me... Well that might be overstating it, but maybe $100-200. With Vegan, my tablet is worth more to me than I paid, and currently lacking other options for a decent Android tablet that fits my needs, that makes it a pretty easy calculation.
I'd love a tablet with stock frogingercomb on it, but it's not an option. Basically I think it comes down to this: If your tablet gives you everything you want with Viewsonic's default software on it, by all means, don't go changin' anything. If you need more, try out some ROMs at the (slight but potential) risk of having a $400 paperweight. If you need more but can't take the risk, return the tablet for a refund and wait a couple months for the next wave.
Afterall, the XDA in XDA-Developers.com stands for "eXtreme Daredevil Alligators" I think, or something similarly awesome. It's not for the lighthearted!

Docomo SH-03C (Lynx 3D)

Is there any known way of cracking the NAND protection on this phone yet?
Or if not, does anyone know where I should look for the latest news on rooting this Japanese-only phone?
I've been looking all over the internet for months and turned up nothing. I could really do with some help here please guys!
I am also interested in an answer to this question. I have been in talks with a few of the Japanese users currently trying to figure out the phone, and I would like to post a bit about what we know, what progress has been achieved and why this is important for other people outside of Japan.
First and foremost, Sharp has every intention of getting their 3D phones into the hands of overseas users. Now, I could be patient and wait for this to launch, and then for the teams to get to work and crack the bootloader open properly. But why not get an early jump on the work so that the phone can arrive, on the Western shores, fully ready for custom roms and root permissions? The three major 3D phones Sharp currently is pimping (the IS03, the 003SH and the SH-03C) are essentially the same phone with minor tweaks. Serious progress on one could lead to a bit step forward for all! And as the Lynx is currently stuck at 2.1 (and won't be 2.2 till "summer"), it's in the greatest need for an upgrade (the 003SH is already 2.2, and the IS03 goes to 2.2 this week). I know that I'm being a little selfish in this endeavor, but I also know I'm not the only one with this phone, and not the only one interested. Perhaps I'm just the most vocal.
Now, for a quick rundown:
rageagainstthecage: doesn't work, freezes up, phone must be hard rebooted with battery removal.
psneuter: offers root access, but cannot modify /system due to NAND protection/locked bootloader.
SuperOneClick: see above.
Z4root: see above.
Universal Androot: doesn't work. Attempts to root, gets the "no good fuu~~" response.
Visionary: crashes when attempting soft root.
Unrevoked apk: fails immediately. No harm to the phone, but no success either.
gfree: No luck, can't toggle S-off but that may be due to the fact that the phone is definitely not the G2.
Unrevoked app: can't recognize the phone.
I'm hoping that someone in the UnrEVOked community is willing to try and work with me/us on this. We're not a large group by any means (and a majority of the users don't have an expansive English grasp) but we are dedicated, and I'm trying something new everyday. Sharp has even released the kernel as open source, so, if an exploit can be found, work can begin immediately. This could be something big, something wonderful. If anyone could please contact me and let me know, I'm really hopeful.
And sorry for hijacking your thread Eliott.

Not at all, thanks for the great info!
As crazy as it might sound, one thing I recommend doing is to continue monitoring other roofing methods that aren't exactly for the sh-03c and seeing what happens. Recently a new method for the Thunderbolt has been unveiled, and I have every intention to try it out. Obviously the likelihood of it working is slim, but it's a ton better than running z4root over and over and hoping for different results.

I'm a bit hesitant to use untested methods. This is my first Android phone and I have never rooted a phone before so it would be wise for me to wait for someone else to find a reliable way first.
I have flashed many older phones and PSPs in the past but this scene is quite new to me.
I am still checking many Japanese sites daily for news of a root. I will send you a PM if I find anything
figured to bump the thread as I`m also a Lynx3D owner looking for root access and a way around the NAND protection. I would be nice to free up this phone .
I'm still searching daily but it seems to be impossible, I'm not sure if it will ever be rooted.
Never mind though, at least we get android 2.2 this month
Recently there's been some success for the IS03 since receiving their 2.2 update. A new process labelled is03break has apparently been great for soft rooting. It hasn't worked on the SH-03 due to it still being on 2.1, but perhaps there will be a breakthrough after our update drops in June (July?).
Additionally, certain other blogs (specifically the Japanese blog Androot) has reported a failure in attempting all conventional root methods, confirming that the Japanese teams are on the same page we are. Both good and bad, as it does give us a baseline, but I refuse to accept there isn't a solution yet.

That certainly gives me hope, looking forward to 2.2 even more now!
And Docomo have announced that 2.2 is coming this month (May). It has been widely reported and they confirmed it in the Docomo shop this morning for me
Despite my better judgement, I went ahead and ran the is03break on my phone yesterday. Not only was it not successful (ran until it timed out) but it managed to adjust my settings enough that my phone wasn't able to see the cellular network, effectively destroying it's "phone" capabilities. I was able to hard reset it through psneuter/adb and now it's back to normal, but it was definitely a bit of a scare.
When 2.2 comes out, I may give it another go, but in the meantime I'll just play nice. Docomo staff confirmed 2.2 is coming before the end of May, and there's a chance we'll need to do it through the PC like the AU folk had to.
Looks like the update may well have been delayed until next month -
http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?hl=en&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dlynx%2B3d%2B2.2%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3DG75%26sa%3DX%26rlz%3D1R1GGHP_en-GB___JP427%26tbs%3Dqdr:d%26prmd%3Divns&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=ja&twu=1&u=http://juggly.cn/androidrumors&usg=ALkJrhgmfYRu8El9AjAHz_UeNb1s85EhZw
This is getting a bit much now. 6 months I've been waiting for them to update this phone. I'm considering taking it back and demanding a refund.
For what it's worth, even if there's a delay, at least it's a bit more definitive than things have been. Way back in March when the Quake hit, we were told it was being delayed from March to "Summer." Then they really brought it forward for May, which I don't really consider summer. That rumor blog (and remember, the key word there is rumor) suggests it will be delayed until early June. Worst case scenario, that means that, instead of getting it this week, we receive it in two weeks. I agree it's a pain in the ass, and the fact remains that, stuck at 2.1, we can't use a lot of conventional rooting tools (not to mention run flash, do App2SD, JIT, etc). But returning the phone at this point accomplishes next to nothing. The summer Docomo lineup is a bit underwhelming, in my opinion. You're paying for the camera, and the phone is attached to that. Even if you get the Galaxy S (a really nice phone, no doubt) it's starting to become a bit older. IF we can hold on till SH-03C receives 2.2, I honestly believe a world of possibilities open up. This community may not be large, but we can still tout a 3D phone proudly, and getting 2.2 really legitimizes its abilities.
Just be patient man.
Yeah, you are right.
I'm just getting frustrated at having to keep deleting applications. I'm really looking forward to using flash, bumping up the CPU and trying out that new Tegra app for playing Tegra games!
I'm just really hoping for App2SD. This is getting severely limiting. Additionally, I'm pretty sure that rooting will become significantly more likely once we're up on 2.2. I'm confident that, once we get to Froyo, our phones might be able to piggyback on methods utilitized by other NAND locked phones (example: EVO) that have been successfully rooted.
I just want to uninstall that stupid 3D golf game. It takes up so much memory it's insane.
This sounds promising -

The woman at the Docomo helpline, having started to recognize my voice, totally leveled with me. The update was planned for the end of this month, and they got screwed in timing. They hope for the first weeks of June, but it may be even later than that. Truth be told, I bought my SH-03c aftermarket, so I can't return it even if I wanted to. But I'm not bailing. I'm confident we will see the update before the 15th, and, really, as long as it doesn't start malfunctioning, I can wait.
More rumors, looks like July 7th is the day -

That makes a ton of sense. June 7th is when Nintendo is launching a huge update for their platforms as well, and Japan seems to like to do a ton of updates all together.
I want this so badly, I can't believe it's going to be another week.
The product page for the SH-03C over at nttDOCOMO just went 404. I really hope it's because they're busy updating with new information, and not because I'm going to be furiously angry.

Asus will not bring us KitKat

Hi guys, I am afraid I bear bad news . In a recent email exchange I had with Asus support I asked about updates to the TF700. They said the following:
ASUS has not planned a release of a firmware update for the TF700 which will revert the OS to KitKat 4 Android.
Unfortunately we have also not been advised of a release date for new firmware releases for your model. Currently we are also awaiting extra information of our R&D department on the matter.

This seems to suggest we will not get KitKat 4.4 but we may get another firmware update. This would possibly still be based on 4.2.1 with just some bug fixes specific to the TF700 or it could possibly be based on 4.3. However they don't have a release date for this yet.
I know this won't be entirely unexpected news for some people but rather a confirmation of what many of us already feared would be the case. It is indeed a shame given the TF700 is really not that old.
Good to know, Asus won't be getting my money again any time soon, looking at the Samsung note 10.1 to replace this apparently old machine

Thanks for sharing the information, and I would appreciate your help in clarifying a few points regarding your email exchange with ASUS. I am not trying to be nitpicking here, but your quoted email does leave me with one question and a comment:
1. Question: was this person a customer representative of ASUS UK (I got it from your profile location)? As far as I know, the R&D Department of ASUS is in Taiwan, and I highly doubt that ASUS UK has close communication with its Taiwan counterpart. Moreover, given my past experience, customer support usually doesn't have much technical knowledge to answer questions about stuff like OTA updates, bootloader unlocking, etc...
2. Comment: The way the quoted email was written is really weird. What is meant by "revert the OS to KitKat 4 Android"? "Revert to" means returning to a former state, which doesn't make sense when you talk about a future update. And what is "KitKat 4 Android"? I am sure that is not the way most people refer to Android 4.4 KitKat. And lastly, "awaiting extra information OF our R&D department" sounds odd, shouldn't it be "awaiting extra information FROM our R&D department"?
Personally, whenever I receive emails with such mistakes, I instantly question the sender's professionalism and credibility.

The initial email was sent using the form on the Asus UK support page, although I do not think the representative who responded was necessarily based in the UK. They had an Asian name and judging from the way the email was written, I think that English is probably not their first language. The reply email was not UK specific either ([email protected]). The guy could actually have been based in Taiwan for all I know.
I think this guy is probably quite reliable as he seemed fairly knowledgeable when dealing with my other queries / complaints but yes he is just a customer support rep so there is a possibility of what he said not being 100% accurate. Still, I think it is the closest to an official word on the matter that we have had so far and seems pretty plausible.
Best way to get any respect on tablet updates is to Go Nexus.
I'm just waiting for the Nexus 10 2. Which will probably release in days if not a couple months at longest.
There are plenty of 3rd party keyboards and cases for 10” tablets, such as the Nexus 10. Which make them function and even look just like our TF700T.
I used to think of the Transformer line as unique. But if you look around. You'll find there's really nothing so special to the Transformer line. Now that 3rd parties have given other tablets, especially Nexus tablets. Every feature that seemed special about the Transformer line.

MicroSD slot? Battery in keyboard dock? USB port?
I gave up on waiting on updates to 4.3 or KK - this last week I finally bit the bullet and flashed CROMI-x. Painful process in that it took days to be successful in unlocking the bootloader - literally took dozens of tries before the tool finally worked. After that, all else was straightforward. I wasn't having any particular performance issues; rather, I got fed up with the random reboots that seem to occur at least once/day. Hopefully, that will improve with CROMI-x.

USB On the Go allows for storage expansion and addresses USB. And the fact the MicroSD storage is not utilized like in the pre-Android 4.0 days, means the MicroSD storage is not well leveraged when running stock. Far as charging, if this works with the Nexus 10 2, that would put Asus behind on that one.
I'm talking keyboards, but if such things interest you like MicroSD and a battery in the dock. You may continue with it and all the issues built into the TF700T. For me, I'm going to take the Nexus 10 2 off ramp.
Edit: I want to add, _that you have helped make the TF700T a better device and I do thank you for your efforts. Even running your kernel now .

I was not having performance issues early on. But the more I used it and the more I added, I found it slowing up big time. While my loaded up phone was having no issues at all. This is when I realized the talk about the slow storage on the TF700T is a big problem. That's when I moved to CROMI-x. It is better than stock, but the storage issue can only best be overcome by using ROM2SD with CROMI-x. (You need a very fast MicroSD.) That does help the most, but still, it's all patches around a big issue. And a tablet that has things right to begin with would run better.

I've had mine over a year and never ran into any real performance problems. While never as snappy as my 2012 & 2013 Nexus 7's or Galaxy S3, it was much better than my Xoom - I didn't see the severe issues that others have. But the random reboots (most occurred when just "idling", not during app use) were just maddening and made the tablet undependable in my mind. I haven't noticed any performance differences with CROMI-x yet but I'm really hoping that it is now more stable.

And a hinge. Mine stays docked almost all the time. I get clamshell protection and a handy portable package. Once you start trying to replicate the other features using accessories with other tabs, you get a bulky mess of stuff that you couldn't pay me to carry around.
Not that I'm exactly loving Asus these days, but the transformer certainly was special when I got it.

I totally agree with you. That is the main reason why I still hold on to the TF700 and not get the new Padfone Infinity ( the new Padfone has a Snapdragon 800, 1080p screen, fast internal storage, microSD support with performance that obliterates almost everything else). The only thing holding me back is the keyboard dock, without which the tablet experience is simply incomplete (in my opinion of course). If ASUS manages to bring the dock to the next Padfone and achieve decent size and weight, I will gladly make ASUS my go-to brand for all computing needs.
...that's a shame.
I have kitkat on my phone, it's pretty nice so far.
So... Anyone else shopping around for an upgrade this holiday season? I was looking at the tf701, but If it's going to have the same lack of development (I truly appreciate the hard work our few, but amazing, devs have put in), then I'd rather go for one of the new waterproof xperias or a galaxy tab. Haven't really looked into the various options yet.. I was excited when we got cm, and especially a pac-rom port, but every time I gave them a try, they just seemed a bit off. Like they were unfinished and obviously made for a phone. Maybe cromi just spoiled me.
This tablet has been good to me, though. I got a micro-hdmi to hdmi cable, so maybe I'll use it as a media hub or something... If the native Linux on our device had more development behind it, and was just a tad more stable and compatible, I wouldn't really be looking into a replacement. Definitely not planning on getting rid of it. If I can find the time maybe I'll use it to delve deeper into learning how to develop myself.

Yes, that will in fact improve. I forgot about that stock issue... Jeeze, that was the worst, so annoying.

I can't imagine a vendor ever matching the features and capabilities the ROM development community adds. I like that Asus offers a way to unlock the bootloader. Samsung would rather that you don't. In the year I've had this, there have been multiple firmware releases. For a minute, cromi was changing every other day. There is a new device they have to sell now. I'm happy. 5.2.2, btw is amazing! Cheers
other ways
if your worried about it unlock and put a custom rom on it like cmbroms thats going to have kk anyday know it will come
well I was hoping for Kit Kat too... seeing as its optimized for lower RAM devices I was thinking it would really help out stock. Its definitely time to flash now. My only question is if anyone knows if they're working on a Kit Kat version of CROMi???

My Experience With Anti-Rollback Feature

Xiaomi implemented anti-rollback feature ( more like a headache) with miui 8.7.6. In this thread I will tell you my experience:
So, I was just browsing through mi community and this post about anti-rollback caught my attention. I wasn't much concerned about it and thought why would someone want to downgrade their phone, I didn't read it completely and that was my mistake. So, you see I had flashed miui 8.7.5 from twrp and did ota update of 8.7.12 to save data as ota is smaller. Now I don't know why but I thought of installing Xposed on my phone. I flashed it and my phone entered bootloop. As this was not knew I calmly booted to twrp and flashed the file of 8.7.5 and pressed reboot.... 1 sec nothing, 2 sec nothing, 3 second nothing and in the 4th second I realised what I had done. I had become a victim of the outrageously implemented anti roll back feature. I left my phone and the next day I found it was alarmingly warm. It stayed warm for like 36 hours and then the battery died. I didn't have time so my phone was a paperweight for 1 week. Then on Saturday( this incident happened three weeks earlier on Sunday) I took it to the middle service centre. Actually around the same time as me a YouTuber named "tech star shahrukh" had bricked his device and posted a video telling how he got his motherboard change. I was sure that service center guys would ask me to pay if I told them the actual reason, so I told them my phone got dead when updating to miui 10. The guy told me with great confidence that they will repair it in two hours, I said ok. Here comes the interesting part. Now I being one of the more stupid personality had actually washed my phone under a tap a long time ago and that had lead to water in my charging board. He told me that I will need to pay 800 INR for the repair, thankfully the motherboard had not got water( they have these little white stickers that turn red on water contact). So I paid an advance 500 and waited. After about 3 days I got a call saying my sub board( charging board) was replaced and any further repairs would come under warranty. I was happy. So after exactly one week of submitting my phone and almost 2 weeks after bricking it, I got it back. Motherboard changed and with miui 9.2.4. So, that was my experience with anti roll back. Thankfully I replaced INR 8000 motherboard by paying 800.
Now it is showing 9.2.13 update, but I won't update. I have had enough of xiaomi. 2 weeks without my phone is just not worth a feeble security feature. So, what are your thoughts on this?are you happy with the current implementation (absolutely not). Suggest how do you think this feature should be implemented.
So you washed your phone and what it has to do with ARB?
Or if I do not understand you right, correcr me.
Arb was implemented for people to stay on latest firmware, as any manufacturer wants to owners be, I totally agree with that, except it was introduced silently which lead to many troubles. Personally I think there was major security bug in previous rom, thats why they changed arb to 4 in that firmware.

Look, actually I had washed my phone a long time ago. So there was no damage but the sticker above the sub board had turned red indicating water damage. My phone was working perfectly even after washing. I bricked it due to anti-rollback when I tried to flash 8.7.5 over 8.7.12. xiaomi has a policy under which if there is liquid damage to a part you need to pay for it to get replaced. There were two stickers in the phone, one over the sub board and another over the motherboard. Only the sub board one had turned red, meaning I had to pay for the sub board replacement(INR 800), So the service centre people first replaced my sub board and then they realised that the phone's motherboard was also messed up, so they replaced it under warranty. I hope you understand now. Washing had nothing to do with arb, just that it made me pay 800 RS.
Okay great, congratulations. But before every flash better be sure what you are doing. And in case of Xiaomi better get full permissions account before any flashing

Right man.
But I still think it wasn't implemented properly. Don't you think that wrecking the motherboard just for a little mistake of flashing a lower version too much? They should at least allow us to disable it. Not everyone is lucky enough to get a motherboard replacement for free...
Same for me. After bricking the device, board was needed to be changed and got it changed under warranty. Something strange happened after change of board, Internal memory got reduced by 4GB and RAM by 40MB. Xiaomi will push update 9.5.19 with ARB V4 even if auto update is off. Check internal storage for downlaod_rom folder. It will get automatically updated during sleep time. Replace the downloaded update file with a text file with same name to stop the updater from triggering it.
I dont understand whats the problem.. In my eyes only mistake by xiaomi was introducing ARB, and only after first bricks releasing official statement.. apart from that its a good feature. Normal users will never face any problems, as they are using official builds, and never go downgrade route.. Users like you, who unlock bootloader, flash beta roms, dev roms, god knows what other roms, should be skilled enough to not break their phone. I mean if you cant follow simple instructions of NOT downgrading bootloader, maybe this whole thing is not for you... By unlocking bootloader you agree with possible damage, no one else is responsible but you. Btw you dont have to change motherboard, all you need is account with permission to flash rom. In the end, all roms gonna be ARB 4, and this whole thing gonna be forgotten. Oh i also was ARB 3 and aware of this whole situation, but updated to .19 ARB 4 rom without fear, because as i said earlier, if you know what you are doing, this brings you no trouble at all..
I unlocked my bootloader and flashed redwolf twrp at 9.5.19.0 stable and after I flashed miui 10 8.6 beta my device is bricked I went to service centre they changed my motherboard

Did you flashed xposed through Magisk or twrp?
Why people downgrade the miui rom? Answer is simple. In each and every new update, new bug is being introduced. When I was on 9.2.4 only issue was with audio over headphone. After each new update and now on 9.5.17 the issues I face are heating during youtube through firefox, When Connected to pc through mtp, folder access is limited. I use ADM do download files and it will be inside adm folder. if i need to access the files, First it should be copied to download folder from adm folder using file manager. ChromeCast gets disconnected often during 9.5.17. Screen mirroring gives artifacts. Audio over Bluetooth is low. Now after anti v4 anyone who wants to go back to much stable version such as 9.2.4 will be bricked. Once in anti v4, there is no way to get back to anti v 3. even to work simple fast boot commands of anti 4 , first dummy file is needed to be flashed which is rather annoying. Last miui version with anti v 3 is 9.5.17.

I have no problem with arb, I have a problem with the way it is implemented. Agreed that we should be careful while flashing roms but hard bricking the device does not make sense. What if even xiaomi accidentally releases an update with anti lower than 4 or we get a buggy update and want to revert. They should at least allow us to disable it or provide us an easy way to restore our device(using our mi id in some tool like mi flash). I understand that it is a security feature, but it has not been implemented correctly. They should have gone the Google way...
Guys, seriously, let me throw in my two bits for you all to chew on: why would you trust _any_ OEM (Samsung, LG, Sony, Xiaomi, etc.) to build a ROM with the users' best interest at heart? Doesn't make sense. That's why we buy devices that we can unlock, and break free. We should be supporting community ROMs and developers and help them to port features we need. There are lots of open source options out there (LOS, RR, etc.) that don't compromise your data or lock you in under the guise of "stability and security".
Thanks for reading.

Because OEMs are strictly regulated by various institutions, unlike developers. And even tho i love LOS, RR or any other custom rom, in 10years of flashing custom roms, i never had one that was more stable and bugfree than original OS that came with phone..

"Stable" is a relative term. My current custom ROM (Bootleggers) is very solid and probably has more features/options than MIUI ever will, I'm sure. More importantly, I know it doesn't do things behind my back and will not turn on me (eg. anti-rollback, etc.) down the road. Above all, quite often, custom ROMs get security patches long after the OEM has dropped support for the device. My $0.02.

Stable is not a relative term. Stable is stable, with all functions working, not crashing, and not having bugs. Features is different topic, stability and features are different thing. Most often the more features, the more trouble you have. You say its very solid, but if you go to thread and read comments, there are many different bugs and problems. You will never find that many different problems in official miui

I have had zero FCs/crashes on my ROM. It's as stable as they get. And I trust it.

Good for you then Sad about that bug you reported 2 days ago lol. Same for me with official firmware, which was created by same people who designed the phone and chose hardware . I mean i dont understand whats your point. Custom rom is better? If thats it, then 95% of owners will disagree, because they have no idea what custom rom, root, or unlocked bootloader is. Official roms are for casual users, who want phone to be reliable, simple, and functioning. They happen to be the vast majority of buyers. Custom roms are either for tech junkies, or people who like playing around with their tech and dont rely on their phone daily. If you discourage trusting companies like samsung, xiaomi, etc., why are you thrusting google? Its their OS after all, they wrote it. Sure, its based on open source linux, but its still googles code. You use google apps, that have all the permissions in the world. What can OEMs possibly take from you that google already didnt lol?

Thanks for contributing.
The "bug" was actually a misconfiguration on my part, not the ROM. I rely on my phone and use it daily with no issues.
XDA is geared towards the 5% that know what a custom ROM is and can make the choice.
I don't trust Google. I don't use Google apps. What I use is open. I've got microG installed so I don't leak my info all over the place. Custom ROMs allow you to do that. Official ROMs don't.

This is not the first device, nor the first OEM, that does things in an underhanded way, where you can never be sure if the next upgrade is going to take your device to a point of no return. My point being that the experience with ARB will (hopefully) alert other MIUI users to what may lie ahead and show Xiaomi that they don't approve. Just an opinion. ?
