This looks only like a security update takes device to March 1 2018 Security Patch Level
301.43MB is rather large for just security update.

I have no idea what's actually going to happen, but every major update was brought a binary update with it across all carriers.
I just got my SUBSCRIPTION Edge off Amazon and am still on G935PVPU4BQAA. What wifi hack are you referring to and do I need to be rooted?

There is a thread in this forum call another hotspot hack. Check there. No root needed, but make sure you read the instructions to get it working.

Anyone else received a software update this morning? I just did, it was like 41mb. Don't see any difference yet but I'm still looking.
It was a security update. Maybe to close possible holes that could have been used for rooting.

What is the date of your security patch level in about phone after updating?

I did get the update but was told if it was installed it may kill the chances of ever being able to root the device.. So even though it seems hopeless for root right now, i skipped this update.

LOL the bootloader is locked. So either an exploit is needed in the system ( not impossible one was found on the Verizon s6 and patched a week later) but samsung has gotten really good at not releasing with an exploit or they give us a way to unlock the bootloader

Chances of root are slim to none unless tmo provides a way to unlock the bootloader. Even if an exploit allowed root to be pushed into system the device would not boot due to kernel checks for system modifications.

So should I update my S7 to the new security update. Does this new update improve performance battery life etc.? The security update is 41.27mb. That is the update that I am getting. So a Root for the T-Mobile S7 is probably never going to happen? If I update to new security update will it prevent bootloader to unlock even more?

We have seen leaked engineering bootloaders and kernels on other samsung locked bootloader devices recently which have allowed root (albeit not very practical root implementations). That is likely the best chance of getting root on this device, i.e. unlikely.
Hope I am wrong but I would take the security update without hesitation and settle in to the fact that root is probably not going to happen on this device.

OK I won't hesitate to take the new security update. But can you tell me if the new update 41.27mb improves performance and battery life? Can someone tell me their experience with this new update?
Yes it does improve the battery life. The initial update will some what drain the battery fast. Dont worry just allow it to completely dies then fully charge it. After 2 or 3 charge cycle you wont see a huge dip in battery drain like at the time of initial updates. I was furious at 1st as my phone dies in like an 3 to 4 hours usage as before i can be go a full day of 8-9 hours of heavy usage. Wity a full charge at 5am and dont have to fully charge it until 7pm is very impressive. Thats with web browsing, facebook, youtube and Pandora. fb Messaging

Seems to be rolling out fast -- My fresh-out-of-the-box-yesterday 6x got a B365 notification last night. Over wifi, btw (still haven't thrown a SIM card into it yet). I suppose I'll let it update at some point soon -- what could go wrong ?
to place the sim card implies a problem with the updates?

Nope, didn't mean that at all. Was just saying that that to show that it has nothing to do with carriers (which I guess we know) - it's coming pure OTA via the internet.

But still a sim card may be needed to register the IMEI on network to get the OTA. It may get without sim but i have not received any till date on any of the honor phones and ota shows after couple of minutes of sim registration
Just saw an update notification this morning, its installing now. I got mine right before thanksgiving (and installed an update then too).
I'm actually very pleased with this phone and the firmware. They let you uninstall all the 3rd party crapware and most everything else (google crapware) can be mostly disabled.
I just wish I had the lineageos email program, I don't like the honor one as much.

OTAs are pushed in phases, sometimes it takes a long time for an update to arrive
Reply if you notice any differences. So far I noticed none but I think that the phone is a bit smoother.
Man, it's just a security update, it doesn't do anything more than just a few patches to Linux kernel.

It's not the way HMD does updates. They always make standalone updates for features + bug fixes and security updates. I think there might even be some policy about it.
Anybody got weird statusbar padding after this update?

You can get the ota packages from the dedicated thread here and flash them with stock recovery.
Be very careful about your build model, cross compatibility isn't 100% guaranteed as far as I know.
Also the otas are progressive, which means you have to flash each one in order starting from your build number to get to the latest one, you can't just flash the latest one. Stock recovery should prevent you from doing harm.
The fact that your phone finds no update makes me believe you don't have TA-1046 build model.
Edit: in the ota thread's OP says it has been tester for all 3 model variants.

My phone is TA-1046. I got latest OTA by flashing OTA builds all the way december to --> january and then phone downloaded febryary automatically. Maybe there was something wrong with update servers or something.
NFC has been working around of 1 week after the update, and then stopped

Don't know what caused your problem, but if you can unlock your bootloader you can download the latest image at https://developers.google.com/android/images, or use the flash tool at that URL. Read the installation instructions at that URL.

What did you expect to see change? AFAIK the only visible changes with the the three updates after October, 2021 are the build number and build date. The Android Security date does NOT update with these post-EOL updates, it stays at Oct, 2021.

VoLTE Roaming Support is in the June 2022 update, not the Feb. update. I don't know what VoLTE support, if any, is in the Feb. update. Also, as @yeswap mentioned above, the security update level is not what you should be checking - it is frozen on Oct. 5 2021. Go to Settings, About Phone, Android Version and check the build number and build date to see what version you are actually running.

VoLTE is Voice over LTE, it has nothing to do with data speed.
There's no VoLTE toggle in Android settings with Android 12 on the Pixel 3. VoLTE is enabled by the carrier and not all carriers support it. Contact you carrier and ask them if they support VoLTE and if it's provisioned on your line.
You can see.if VoLTE is provisioned by dialing *#*#INFO#*#*. You can test if VoLTE is working by making a phone call. If your phone stays on LTE during the call VoLTE is working, if the phone switches to 3G during the call VoLTE is not working.

The last security update I see is June 1, 2022, which is to install Android 13, which I don't really want. Since there is a a new wifi calling exploit found, is there a way to get the security updates without installing A13 or does Goolge have the deck stacked and I'm essentially forced to upgrade? I live in a rural area and without wifi calling, I have no service.
I think your best bet would be to install a security patch via Magisk if you can find one. Also, maybe a kernel would offer what your looking for?

First of all the exploit was fixed with the latest update a few days ago! The exploit was discovered, fixed and published by Google. That's the usual way a chip manufacturer deals with it and there' no reason why it should be unsecure to use the latest firmware. BTW: No device was attacked.
Security patch level June '22? You want the latest patch level without installing the corresponding firmware? For what purpose? A new security patch = updated firmware and without an updated firmware you don't have any patches. That's it.
Edit: Some background information. Your installed patch level is set in your boot.img. In theory you'll need a patched boot.img with another patch level (unlocked bootloader required => all data gets wiped!). But your device isn't then more secure than before!!
So it's clear in my head, the OS is firmware and the latest security patches rely on the latest OS to function, correct?
