So I am trying to turn the proximity sensor completely off or at least when not in a call. The reason being is my phone constantly flashes on and off when its on a desk and I have to reach over it or type on a keyboard and my arm just comes close to it. Is there a setting I can change that will keep the screen from flashing on and off every 5 seconds? Or even turn off the proximity sensor completely?

I noticed when my phone gets to about 20% battery left my hard key backlights turn off and on every 5 to 10 seconds. Is this normal?

They turn on and off according to the same sensor that controls auto brightness, maybe it is the ambient light.

Not really sure how to answer your question, however, I usually turn off my hard button backlights toggling Screen Filter on and off. There is a setting in there to not turn off the backlights if you'd like. Using the widget as well as the shortcut allows me to have different brightness levels, and the ability to choose whether I want to backlights on or off (I prefer off.)
They do seem to turn on after a while somehow.
A quick word of warning.....
A new app has appeared on the market using the Gnote as a 'cover pic'.
https://market.android.com/details?id=smart.cover&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsInNtYXJ0LmNvdmVyIl0
Similar to the 'smart screen off' app that is supposed to work with the proximity sensor to turn off the screen. It claims to work with the Gnote flip cover but I can assure you it doesn't. It has the same problem as the other screen off proximity apps in that it works if you put your finger over the sensor but not with the Gnote flip cover.
Just a 'heads up' for anyone thinking of buying...
Dan
Not only that, any app which wakes your phone using proximity sensor is preventing deep sleep and probably killing the battery all day long

I am using "Power Switch" since my galaxy tab times. It's made by an xda developer. Many options to switch off your note, eg using the proximity sensor or light sensor or aceleration sensor. I am using the proximity sensor mode. No draining my battery . So far so good.

It's work fine with me,just include it in task killer ignore list.
Thanks

Thanks for that. Now I can just put my phone in my holster, or close the case if using one, and it will turn off. No more fiddling for the power (and pressing the volume at the same time) for me!
The Power Switch app works really well at turning the screen off, a lot better than the other ones I've tried

Well, just my 2 cents. I used the app and for most of time it does not work. But if you see the way it works is if you slowly close the cover then it works. If you close the cover quickly it does not. In any case it is not acceptable. I just checked the app and returned it promptly

For me it works only with fingers, with flip cover it doesn't turn off screen
Can you post all your settings for Power Switch on GNote?
I tested it and everytime it wakes up.
It works with my finger and if i wish over it, it screens off, 1 second later it starts again.
Nothing for me. I just press the Power off button
One missing feature of our beloved note it the ability to turn the screen off when closing the cover over the screen.
Also proximity sensor is missing too..
However there are apps that make use of the light sensor to turn off the screen...
I have tested various apps including tasker, locale plugin, smart screen off and so on, which can make use of the light sensor to turn the screen off..
But I find that the light sensor itself is not very sensitive in low light conditions..
Even in a dimly lit room the sensor detects only 0 lux and forces the screen off... Bummer..
Anyone here sucessfully using case close screen off ???????

Ipad and few other devices like nexus 7 makes use of the magnet sensor.. THis is the best way to do it as there is no battery consumption.
Samsung may not have included this as the magnet might interfere with the s pen..

When I load up tasker, it allowed me to create a condition using the magnetic field state. But I'm new to the app and haven't figured out how to use it yet.
Is anyone else having an issues when on a call to someone you take it away from your ear and look at your phone and the screen doesn't come back on. I have to hit the power button to make the screen wake up. I'm all stock (4.4.2) with unlocked bootloader. I m trying to see if this is a hardware problem where I need to RMA or software problem.
Mine works perfectly well. Are you sure you don't have anything that might be affecting the proximity sensor, like smudges or a screen protector?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
No, I don't have any screen protector not any smudges. I saw similar issues on other phones and someone said to clear data and cache on the phone app so I don't know if that will work or not.

What time out do you have your screen set to? Sounds like it's simply locking after the designated time.
I've noticed the screen turning on and off occasionally when talking. Almost like the sensor isn't sure if I'm holding it to my head or not but then I do hold it away from my face.
I have the same issue...
I can't hang a call because the screen simply don't turn on when I remove my phone from the ear.
In add at this issue, seems like the proximity sensor turn off the backlight screen only.
When I finish a call, I found the clock screen opened, in my case the settings screen of advanced clock widget...
It's really annoying...

Do you guys have a screen protector applied by any chance? Everyone had this issue with the nexus 4 because the sensor is really sensitive and picks the protector up, not letting it turn the screen on. Try removing a section of the protector where the sensor sits, this will fix your issue.
Surprisingly, I don't have this problem
Team Nexus 5 sucks. Underpowered battery for a 5inch 1080p screen that is non-removable. Weak generic antenna that drops signal. Worst speaker of any device on the market. Cheap plastic build.

I have it on 15 seconds. Shouldn't that feature be bypassed when a call is in progress so that the proximity sensor is usable. This is the first phone that I've had that has done this to me. On all others the proximity sensor stays live even after the predetermined sleep time.
After 15 seconds you're screen is simply turning off as you have set. Mine does so after 1 minute, which is my screen time out setting.

During a call shouldn't the screen timeout be bypassed then go back to the default setting once the call has ended? That makes much more sense to me.

This seems to be the built in functionality of the phone and not a bug. I can't really say if one way is better then the other but I just turn the screen off during calls now.
This is the bug...
really annoying
same problem

Same problem here do any one have solution for this..
Does anyone noticed that the night mode is turned off on the lock screen untill we unlock it with our fingerprint. I also noticed this in some apps that require fingerprint that nightmode automatically turns off when device needs to scan fingerprint and turns back on after it's done
Sent from my GM1901 using Tapatalk
I noticed that fingerprint unlock doesn't respect the display calibration settings. Since my screen has a noticeable yellow tint without custom calibration, I had to disable it.
