Verizon is rolling out Stagefright OTA patch for Galaxy S5. I installed and tested the patch. My phone is stock/un-rooted, and appears to be working fine after the patch.
What android version?
G900VVRU2BOG5 is the new update VZ rolling out...
I have captured the update.zip OTA ..
Let me know if some needs for research. .

I think you missed posting in a couple hundred other threads...
Or you can just use viper4android, kill stagefright, and tell Verizon, "Thanks, but no thanks--I'm in this for _me_ now."
I am not entirely sure what that means, but man, the day when this contract ends cannot come soon enough.
What version of android OS are we at now with all these updates? Is it still 5.0???

5.0.2 I think... but does this mean the OE1 unrootable phone is fixed? Can the G900Vs with this build be rooted now?

Pretty sure it's still 5.0. I don't think the S5 will be getting any more updates, it's at the end of its software cycle since 5.0, this update was only released for the stagefright fix.

No. Verizon's own custom OE1 is the reason that it's not rootable. Once you have the OE1 Kernel or higher, you cannot root unless they find another exploit. I doubt they will considering it's an older phone that's already being phased out in terms of support.

Take it back. You have a "new" phone that basically has no support for it anymore. If you have something to use currently other than the S5, I'd consider waiting till the new Google Nexus 5 or 6 2015 edition coming out this year. That should have root and an unlocked bootloader (Google wouldn't stand for Verizon locking down their phone).

You would have to find a phone you like, go to that forum, and check. I believe any phone with an unlocked bootloader can always be rooted? And I'm pretty sure the Google nexus 5/6 (the old ones) will always be rootable.
I'm jumping ship from Samsung (I wanted to move to the Note at one point, but Samsung screwed up big time with their phones trying to make it like an iPhone, and with Samsung/Verizon in bed with locking up root/bootloader).

There's a search bar at the top of XDA where you can enter a device. It also allows you to specify which carrier as well. This is from the M9 forum. Says you need a JAVA card which is expensive, but it unlocks the phone/allows root. You can also donate (usually $20-60) users to do it for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...t-s-off-how-root-s-off-verizon-m9-20-t3123178
I have no idea about the M8, seems to be the same, have to have S-OFF or whatever the heck that means. Do research yourself if you want the phone.

Follow the instructions in muniz_ri's thread. He hasn't released the deodexed version though. You should never take ota when rooted, and you should actually have it disabled as soon as you root. One user reported that they ota updated without losing root, but I'd never recommend it.
There is no benefit in disabling it. You have to authorize any update, so it cannot overwrite it on its own. The only reason to disable it is the popup after an update comes out which can be stopped by deleting the update.zip then having the install fail.
Two or three updates ago, I lost the ability to rotate my screen unless an app forces it to rotate, now with this update my phone no longer reads sd cards, and in fact boot loops if there is one inserted. I've done a lot of searching, both when the initial problem manifested, and now with the new problem, but haven't seen anyone with a fix. Any suggestions?

He also stated that TWRP cannot handle the new file encryption yet, so .zips would need to be uploaded in recovery which is wonky for some, as well as the dual system partition fiasco is not handled yet. So *soon* might be more like a few weeks...
Out of curiosity, what are you guys wanting to do with root? First thing I'm going to do is replace system emojis with iOS ones.
As of 10/20, from the source:
Chainfire said:
This is the first device with Android's new partition layout. Having looked at the firmwares and at running devices (remotely), I have some ideas on how to do it.
However, it will be a while before I have SuperSU fixed up. The changes will be quite a bit of work and testing, and doing so remotely will make that take significantly longer. So I'm just going to wait for my own device, but as they aren't available in my country, it has to be shipped from another country and go through customs. I don't expect my device to arrive for another week or two.
In the meantime, it's always possible someone else releases root for it.
I saw @jcase and @Dees_Troy have been playing with TWRP, to me it seems wholly possible to fix that up (mostly) as well. But even if TWRP is released tomorrow, using the existing SuperSU ZIP will not work on it, due to all the breaking changes in Android 7.1.

I assume that the dual system layout partition could play a big role in why TWRP/Root isn't ported yet. Every method has to be adapted to that solution so far as it is new. Though TWRP is already being worked and it's only a question of time XD.

This doesn't exactly unlock your bootloader. It breaks whatever VZW put on there to block bootloader unlock. After running this you will need to use adb to unlock the bootloader yourself just like a GS version or a nexus. No, this will not give you root. But typically a bootloader unlock is necessary to achieve root. Root methods have not been released yet. Chain Fire has achieved system less root but it's not ready for release.
Also, no depixel8 does not break android pay. Unlocking your bootloader after applying depixel8 will break android pay. Google has prevented android pay from working of your bootloader is unlocked.
Do you read the XDA articles or just post on the forums?
Great. Root/TWRP/all that comes with it is out for the LG V20... H918
but anyone have news, or better, ever try to root the Canadian Version ? (H915)
I'm SOOOO frustrated with Mobile Manufacturer. All I want is a powerfull phone, with the possibility to add storage (sdcard), change the damm battery and the possibility to install custom roms.
But it seems the word out there these days is to avoid those 3 things as much as possible... ARG!!!
Not even the AT&T and Verizon variants have their bootloader unlocked and rooted yet. So it's too early to be frustrated.
Any news on LG-H915?

Could it be based on the fact he's on a different network? I thought by rooting, theres a chance to lose the network unlock? I understand he's using the H915 on Rogers (similar frequency to AT&T I think), so could that be the issue?
Curious as to why the service isn't working if the AT&T variant is working, when supposodly H915 and H910 are "the same".

That's very unfortunate he hasn't been on for 2 days. I would test myself, but this is my daily driver, and I have no dev experience to debug issues that may araise.
Thank you for figuring out how to root, and unlock the BL regardless.
We hope the Dev of the h915 gets back online to provide us any updates on the progress to unlock the BL and root this model. It would be very nice to get them get them ready before Christmas day... but well, I guess we are gonna have to wait a bit longer. I know that most of us promise a nice donation if we get there anytime soon. This won't be forgotten for sure.
While root is nice and this is my first device I've used that doesnt have root remember to weigh the pros and cons. With no current method to revert you may lose out on any future otas and be stuck forever on your current android version. Personally I am in no rush although i am curious about it working for the 915. If there ever is a revert method i would be more inclined to try rooting
i actually find it a positive thing to stay in a known good version of android where things works.
I've noticed with each never version of android, things keeps getting locked down more and more.
I never went for Apple because of its lock down policy, and now Google is slowly becoming another Apple, trying to lock down the phones so people have no freedom of choice to tinkle around with their ROM, just all in the name of keeping Dev happy, because they claim when user has too much power, then their work is not safe. (by that they mean they can't milk money dry to the end users, if end users have the ability to hack)
I just received a notification in my status bar for an update. The thing is, I've already applied the January update earlier this month. Anybody else getting this? I bought mine from Verizon and got it today too. I flashed stock back to take the OTA but it failed a few times. I was thinking it was a patched bootloader since they didn't do that with the January update. But apparently not if yours is from Google. There were some random lockscreen touch issues reported. It could possibly be a fix for that.
Sure hope it's not to lock the bootloader. My Verizon pixel 2 comes tomorrow and I want to unlock and root. I doubt it's preloaded already. Can anyone confirm you can unlock the bootloader with the new update?
I don't think it has anything to do with Verizon. I'm on T-mobile and got the 2nd update today as well.
