i just want to ask if its normal to only be getting 1000 ~ 1100 gpu score on antutu benchmark???
mali 400, adreno 220 and the ulp on my one x all get atleast 1300 ~ 1600 score
what bothers me is that the adreno 220 should have a lower clock speed than the ulp on the tegra 2 but still gets higher marks...
i get around 1115~ but still it does make sense that the tegra 3 in a one x is more powerful
and clock speed is not everything at all. Efficency and architecture matter a lot in determining the power of a gpu
Eg an i7 clocked at 4ghz will be a huge ammount more powerful than a phenom II clocked at 4ghz

The component thats bugging me a lot is the GPU. I am seeing old Adreno 200 GPUs on new phones like the Desire V.
#1-So is it really a factor that affects the overall performance of the phone?
#2-And which is the best?
I have seen phones equipped with Mali 400MP,Adreno 200,205,220 and 225,SGX 540...and those Tegra chips from LG Optimus Series.

GPU's are not the biggest factor no, as long as the CPU and RAM is enough overall performance will not be effected by the GPU.
Some games that are very 3D intensive would befit from a more powerful GPU yes, and for some games the Tegra 3 chip allows for better shading and water effects etc

Actually its both . RAM also has a major impact on games. The better the GPU, the lower the impact on the RAM since the device won't need to be put under too much "strain" to process the graphics (also requiring a good CPU).
GPU IS IMPORTANT FOR SMOOTH OS PERFORMANCE. The current OS uses GPU acceleration to smooth things out ig. ICS and JB. Many ROMS also enable GPU to increase performance throughout the OS. If you have a snapdragon, then it uses RAM from the phone for RAM on the GPU where as Tegra has it's own dedicated RAM for its GPU.

The no. in the card's name does not reflect the ram it has.It reflects the model number.And of course the Mali mp-400 is better than the Adreno 200.It performs better than the Tegra 2.
Here's the performance order of previous generation chips :
Mali Mp-400>PowerVR SGX 540>Adreno 205 >> Tegra 2.
Maybe the Adreno 205 isn't THAT much better than the Tegra 2,but the Tegra 2 is highly over-rated,and the Mali mp-400 pulls cleanly ahead of it.

I think it's 64MB or something like that for the Tegra 2.Doesn't really matter though.If you get anything better than the Adreno 200,it's good.

You know, I have been using for some time a(pretty old by now) LG Optimus One. It has an Adreno 200 GPU and an ARMv6 600 Mhz CPU.
Even if I overclock it to 800Mhz and maximize the ROM performance in every way possible, GTA3 for example runs pretty much non-playable(very low FPS).
The Optimus One uses a Qualcomm MSM7227 SoC(2009). But in 2011 Qualcomm released the MSM7227A(used for example in Galaxy Mini 2) which also has an Adreno 200 for GPU, but it uses a much better ARMv7 800Mhz Cortex-A5 CPU. The GPU coupled with this much more capable CPU handles GTA 3 really good, playable without problems.
That's really interesting to me, to say the least. It's like you would have a good video card in your PC, but it was bottlenecked by the CPU. And Adreno 200 is quite old.

It has an enhanced Adreno 200.That's how it gets better graphics score in AnTuTu.And I'm surprised you can't run GTA3.I can play Dead Space no lag on my Wildfire S,even at stock,and that looks just as intensive as GTA3.
Although I do agree the CPU might be a bottleneck,it shouldn't affect 3D gaming.The UI becomes really smooth @ 825Mhz,which surprises me as it lags in comparison at even 806Mhz.
Dead Space also runs very good on Optimus One, GTA 3 is much more demanding.
It has to do with the fact that GTA is an open world game which requires more background processing rather than current processing that the majority of android games use. I believe that the CPU does the background processing which is why it lags. This also explains why the galaxy mini can play GTA while having a similar clocked CPU, the architecture.

Hi, I mainly want to know this because I was looking at a custom ROM for my Liquid Metal today and I saw that one had an app to overclock the Adreno 205 to 384mhz. So what is the Adreno 205 usually? and what is the frequency of some of the higher end chips? Adreno 220, 225 etc.

Adreno 220 runs at 266 Mhz.
Adreno 225 runs at 400 Mhz.
Adreno 205 runs probably around 200-300 Mhz range.
Overall, clock speeds mean very little in terms of graphics performance. With each new Adreno GPU, the overall technology of the chip is upgraded so that it will perform much better. Overclocking it will give it only a little performance boost.
1. Adreno
Adreno series ATI which is made, or used to be called ATI imageon series, circa 2002-2004 is at the beginning of the release of this GPU series. In 2008, AMD imageon sold to one of the leading manufacturers of processors, namely Quallcom. And now ATI / AMD only supportsthe architecture and development only. Now Adreno series is inherited from all the SOC (System On Chip) made Quallcom.
2. PowerVR
PowerVR Series is the first artificial logic video also enliven the VGA market, but as the dominance of NVIDIA and ATI video logic now only play in the world of mobile gadgets GPU. PowerVR itself is not in production in finished form by power logic, but they are only a draft architecture, which sold thelicense to many of the leading processor manufacturers such asNEC, Intel, Freescale, Texas Instruments and others.
PowerVR Series now in its sixth series, the second ever used in its game console in the 1900s, the Dream cast, and Sega Saturn. PowerVR SGX Series 5 is the series most often found on smartphones, SGX GPU 5 is an elite in the world of smartphones, the world might belike BMW cars.
3. Mali
Mali series, this GPU is made in the ARM architecture, though still rarely heard his name, but its power can not be underestimated. Mali GPU series outstanding from HDTVs, gamingconsoles (PS3), up to a smartphone. Especially for smartphone, the series used is 400MP4 Mali (MP is the core indicators used). GPU is part of the SOC A9 1.2GHz Exynos dual-core CPU Samsung's Galaxy SII. Reportedly 400MP4 Mali is ableto render almost equivalent to the PS3 and Xbox 360.
4. GeForce ULP
Series GeForce ULP (Ultra Low Power) are concentrated in that part of the GPU Tegra 2 SOC manufactured by NVIDIA. GeforceULP uses quadcore 4 pixel shaders + 4 vertex shaders up to a total of 8 cores that are in it.
If for determining the performance of course can not be separated from what SOC is used, it is very difficult to determine the point which is used for comparison because each GPU is highly dependent on the performance and support of its SOC. For instance, SOC OMAP 4 series with SGX540 GPU vs quadcore Tegra 2 ULP GeForce GPU with 8core, hello who wouldwin? When to see the number of cores, by naked eyes 8core candidate who will be on the GeForce ULP but when calculating SOC capabilities then look OMAP 4 was able to bulldozeTegra 2, not only from the benchmark results, framerate, javascript rendering, but also within a matter of efficiency in the use battere .
This is not surprising because the OMAP 4 has a few secret weapons like supports dual channel DDR2 memory up to 1GB LP, where the new Tegra 2 is capable of using a single channel.Back again SOC capabilities greatly determine the outcome, as well as Snapdragon with its core scorpion, would be defeated perform with Tegra 2? Not really, mainly for multimedia results which force snapdragon and Adreno indeed in optimizingon this side.

If we're going to talk about actual numbers for actual GPUs that you can buy then this is what's available:
Adreno 320 (Snapdragon 600), Geforce ULP (Tegra3), PowerVR SGX 544MP3 (Exynos 5 quad), Mali T604 (Exynos 5 dual).
So far from what we know of 3DMark, GLBenchmark and some other tests, the approximate order of performance from best to worse is:
PowerVR, Adreno, Mali, Geforce.
This WILL change because of newer versions coming out (Tegra4 for example). For now though, I'd consider Adreno and PowerVR to be ahead, PowerVR for sheer performance and Adreno for a good balance between power, performance and die size.

Samsungs Exynos is pretty good, little behind snapdragon, so is the powerVR, though not as great as adreno. MTK and Mali are terrible. they try to lock people in with the high numbers and "Octa" cores. its not bad cpus/gpus they just lag far behind exynos and snapdragon.
