What steps do i need to follow in order to UNLOCK bootloader on OREO? - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

Edit: Solved. Thank you. See the second post for the update.
Hello. I have been away from the forums for a long time and seems like a lot has happened.
I want to unlock my bootloader and then install Existenz Rom but the guide threads are a bit old and couldn't see
relevant information about oreo.
I'm on 41.3.A.2.75 / R2E HK firmware.
F8332
Do i need to downgrade to MM?
Which thread should I follow?
Do I need TA partition fix for Existenz Rom?
Thank you for your help.

Solved
I have followed the steps on the linked thread without any issues:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz/help/sony-xperia-xz-dual-f8332-unlock-t3640302
Now I am following the instructions on Existenz Rom Page. Hopefully I will be able to install it without any issues.

Yes, I did downgrade MM through FlashTool.
I did a google search and found a Customized India MM FTF. If I remember correctly it was in the first 5 results.
Make sure you disable encryption/device password before downgrading. I got stuck on the enter pin screen because my phone would not accept my pin. Had to spend 20 minutes to hard reset it.

Entered random passwords for 30-40 times. May be you can wipe data etc from recovery, I haven't tried it though.

I got it. Windows 10 is a pain when it comes to installing drivers. I had to disable its device driver signing to install the right drivers. I am now on Existenz. Thanks for the help

Hi!
Do you backup and restore the TA partition? Or this step is not necessary to use ExistenZ?
It's imperative to downgrade to MM or I can achieve root permissions in Oreo?
Root the Sony devices is a hell...

I have backed up the Ta partition on MM. I did not restore it on existenz. I guess existenz has its own fix.
As far as i know you need to unlock in order to root your phone. To unlock your phone you need to be on MM.
Just follow the guide step by step. Then install Existenz. It worked fine for me.

There is no point in restoring the TA, that relocks the bootloader!!
The point about backing up the TA is so that is you want to go back to stock you can do and restore all DRM functionality. However, if you restore the TA you cannot have an insecure kernel.

Unlock bootloader then rooting method?

Hey everyone, I've been lurking around for about two months, from when I picked up this phone. It's still completely stock. Unrooted, S-ON, all that. Well, after the update to Nougat, I've been searching for a way to unlock the bootloader & root. Is it safe for me to use WinDroid Toolkit for the process? Just need a guide for the process, for the most part. I appreciate any help that anyone is willing to offer.

Go to http://htcdev.com and make an account, then follow the steps and unlock your bootloader from there. After that you fastboot flash TWRP using ADB, and then use TWRP to flash a root solution. I prefer Magisk.
Alright, just unlocked the bootloader, going through the process of setting up my phone once again. Do you have a link to the Magisk & TWRP programs that I can use? Also, should I put the TWRP file in the same folder as the fastboot files?
I greatly appreciate the assistance you've given me so far, I'm deeply grateful man.
Okay, so I flashed twrp, then the seSuperuser zip that was linked to in CaptainThrowback's thread. Now my phone is stuck in a bootloop, it won't go past the HTC logo with the red warning letters. What do I do now?

try this step by step.. :good:
1.Flash TWRP 3.0.3-8 via Fastboot.. Do not reboot into system, enter into recovery..
2.Do a factory Reset via TWRP.. Do not reboot into system
3.Now flash SuperSU 2.79 SR3.. Reboot into system..
couple of bootloops are common, do not give up for at least 3 bootloops..
It will take a long time to boot as you have done a factory reset..
So be patient and wait for at least half hour..

Sorry about this - I updated the TWRP thread with the current/preferred root method: MagiskSU.
You need to flash a stock boot.img and then flash the Magisk zip from the linked thread.

Aw crap, I wish I would have seen this yesterday. I tried to format data & flash one of the stock rooted roms for marshmallow roms for my sprint one a9... now it just hangs at the HTC One logo. I'm gonna assume that I'm screwed until a stock rooted Nougat rom is released for sprint.

You don't flash firmware with TWRP. But you can use the SD card method to flash the RUU, which doesn't require a computer.

Hello Guys,
I Have an HTC one a9 with 7.0, s-off, bootloader locked
I have some concerns before I root my phone
If I unlock the bootloader and root the phone, Will I have the option of phone encryption as it used to be ?
If I unlock the bootloader with HTCDev and flash the TWRP with SuperSu and boot file, it is a MUST to do a data factory reset? or I`m able to do all the process without loosing my data?
Thank you in advance

Hi all, I've been lurking and reading for 2 months, preparing to root my device. So this title fits my mood.
One A9, "factory unlocked version", S-on, running 1.57.617.60
Just did the actual unlock from htcdev so now data is erased. I'm re-reading the threads I saved to prepare, now that it's time to actually finalize what ROM I want to run, but now have a few questions before completing the plunge.
In past threads I read the newer MM and N security prevented rooting, and reverting to Lollipop was necessary. From what I read here that is no longer the case?
If I want to debloat the system I am already running, can I do that without finding a custom ROM to run?
Thank you

Yes, you can root and debloat Nougat. Though you should make a stock system image backup first of you ever want to receive an OTA again. The TWRP thread FAQ has a lot of information about this.

Is because with the update you loose bootloader commands ( fastboot)
So, you need to root, after root install Rashr from Google play, with Rashr you can flash twrp, with twrp you can flash aboot.img from 5.0.2 version with a flash zip then you recover bootloader commands like this.

What he's saying is that without fastboot the only way you can flash a ROM is through TWRP. You need to root and then install TWRP, and then install the ROM. Also, if you're doing any kind of reflashing; to do so without a custom recovery is risky at best.

Yes, the TWRP steps are described for Idol 4, but the process works perfectly fine for 6045. That thread is a compilation of steps from few other threads that are linked from there; some may not be specifically for our model, but they work. Just read carefully and make sure you understand. It's quite normal on XDA, when you find some info from another device's forum, and adapt it to your device. Like I said, I did this myself on 6045I at least 3-4 times, while fooling around with the phone after I got it.

You can't use Sahara & Firehose for flashing the ROM. It will only let you to flash the recovery (TWRP).
You have to understand that you need to go through several steps here...
1. Your goal is to downgrade to 5.x. You can't flash a 5.x official stock ROM, because the only way to flash stock is to use Mobile Upgrade Q, and you already got an update to 6.0 for your phone. Your only choice is to find a 5.x ROM that can be flashed from TWRP.
2. So, you need to install TWRP. I recommended using Sahara & Firehose, because this method works for me every time with no problems. I pointed you to the thread with ALL the information you need. If it doesn't work for you, I don't know why. Maybe you don't have the proper drivers installed? You need the drivers before you try doing anything with your phone from your PC. Maybe you have a bad USB cable or port? Maybe something else? I have no idea... I simply told you what works for me 100%.
3. There may be another way, if you somehow root you phone first, then flash TWRP using Rashr, for example. But I don't know how to root it. I only rooted it by flashing SuperSU, after I already had TWRP installed, so I can't help you with this...
Most importantly, you need to understand what you are doing, why you need to do specific steps, and the purpose of all the tools you use...

[solved][root]Notice of rooting N2G47O

Problem: After a standard update(flash bootloader & radio, then update image) and standard rooting process(boot twrp, flash supersu), the device will keep rebooting
Possible reason: the latest bootloader(8996-012001-1703151359) may verify the system image in the phone to ensure it unchanged
Solution: after installing supersu in TWRP, flash the previous bootloader(8996-012001-1702151126) back and the device will start normally
If we sideload the ota and then flash old bootloader works?

Questions About Relock Bootloader - Restore TA Sony XZ

Hello , I hope you all doing good,I'm new , I had read a lot of Threads here , not completely but a lot of threads help me when i was completely lost so Thank to all members.
But now I got some questions about bootloader Relock , and Backup TA Partiton, first of all , I take a lot of time to do all steps because I use this Tutorial :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz/how-to/how-to-unlock-bl-kernel-twrp-root-t3541648 Thanks to @DHGE and @nathan30
but fail at some points( Flash Nougat and Unlock Bootloader)
So I Downgrade to MM, I save the 'famous' TA partition, everything was good ,next step was to flash a Nougat , and I successfully do it with this thread by @Leonne: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz/help/famous-fsc-file-t3571093 Thank you dude
Next steps , Unlock the bootloader , and after a lot of command fail with Flashtool and adb command( with the good code by sony official website), I do it using another thread , this one by @lucaszell :
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/help/solved-bootloader-unlocking-problems-t2364334/page4 Thank you
I flash Androkernel and TWRP then SuperSu , I became very affraid of ' Fail messages' and I think that ' Soft Brick and Brick' can kill me.
So how can I relock my Bootloader and restore my TA partition Properly , can I follow the first thread, why I ask this question,it's because I don't do everything as write in the first thread:
Now, if you want to restore your TA partition and relock your Bootloader this is absolutely simple.
First of all, backup all the data you care of. Because your phone will be factory reset. Take your backuped TA partition and rename it TAbackup.img
Then, start your phone into recovery mode (TWRP)
Plug your phone with USB and check your device is recognized in recovery mode : adb devices
If it's okay, let's run this command now : adb push TAbackup.img /data/local/tmp/TAbackup.img
Then run this one : adb shell dd if=/data/local/tmp/TAbackup.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/TA
Well, your TA partition is now back. Plug your phone off and you just have to flash a new STOCK ROM via FlashTool.
Now you have your original DRM and your bootloader is automatically relock !
Flash the stock ROM you want with Flashtool and enjoy a fresh and clean install

That can brick my device ? I also got a warning at each boot , ... Your phone can't be trusted or something like that ... not important, but How can I restore my XZ like it just go out from the Sony store...Also I'm sorry ,my English is disgusting

That can brick my device ? I also got a warning at each boot , ... Your phone can't be trusted or something like that ... not important, but How can I restore my XZ like it just go out from the Sony store...Also I'm sorry ,my English is disgusting

Emma will not relock the bootloader. Emma is official Sony software and they do not support relocking the bootloader.
The only way back to stock with a locked bootloader is to flash a FTF then restore your TA partition.

No
Your backup contains the content of one partition.
The content of TA stays the same throughout the life of your device unless you or a malicious software fiddles with it.
According to what I did to root my phone I can backup my TA with the backup ta tool without worry?

1. with XZ its no turning back option, if you relock you bootloader, the device will keep shutting down
2. you will have to first restore TA.IMG (of your OWN DEVICE!!!!) using dirtycow script! on rooted phone having modified kernel!
3. then flash any ORIGINAL stock rom (either 6, 7 or 7.1.1)
4. using FLASTHOOL you can RELOCK you BOOTLOADER with the same key! (KEEP THE KEY SAVED)
now you will have
original stock rom installed, stock kernel, and TA.img in play! so relocking bootloader should be fine!

Well, I think @Dorynous is a bit lost but on this journey he edited post #1 in this thread. There he quoted a proper procedure to reverse the unlocking.
The procedure you describe will not work (wrong tools, no functionality for XZ, ...) at best or/and WILL brick the device.
+1 just relocked my bootloader 10 min ago...
Hey @Pipould,you do it using the quote in the first post by @DHGE?
Or you do it using @YasuHamed post?
Your device working fine? No more warning like... You device can be trust... ??

the process described by me and mention here
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz/how-to/how-to-unlock-bl-kernel-twrp-root-t3541648
is similar,
you can only relock you bootloader ONCE you have TA.img instate and untouched kernel flashed.
if @Pipould just relock his bootloader, the device won't boot and keep displaying warning.

Yeap, I don't see the point of relocking if you don't have TA.
I have my TA img and I'm on the Androplus Kernel

November 2019 security update is now available

83.7MB
Installation without any troubles. No major changes. d2tw still not working.
Nothing to say
My device gives an error when i try to install.
Says: Failed to install update, tap here for more information.
When i tap, there is no 'more information' !
Stupid Android!

If the OTA fails, you can find out which partitions it doesn't like from the logcat. If you have a fastboot image, you can reflash the affected partitions. I have had to restore both system.img and vendor.img since 10.0.10.0 (the fact that I've been using a custom bootanim definitely does not help).
Code:
adb logcat | grep update_engine

I'm used to flashing from fastboot but I'm pretty sure that only works with an unlocked bootloader. I've read that you can use miflash with a locked bootloader but you need a complete rom and the most recent one is 10.0.13.0
Sorry

Thank You For Time And Reply.
OKay What Should We Do To Fix The (Partition) Problem. ? Complete Stepwise Guide Will Be Beneficial To Us.
One More Question.
Is There A Way To Get Every Month OTA Installed Without Interrupting (Unlock Bootloader , Rooted With Magisk) ? If Yes , So What Could Be The Steps/Guide.
Thanks.

If you just have Magisk, this is all you should need to do.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi...ll-magisk-proper-support-ota-t3836952/page100
If you have other stuff that breaks that process (eg. Magisk + TWRP) then you need extra steps.

Previously you said you did not have an unlocked bootloader, but you asked for OTA instructions with Magisk...
Since you don't have backups of the modified partitions, you should backup your data then install 10.0.13.0 from fastboot image. This is the only option if your bootloader is locked (I think that miflash allows this?)
If you are modifying your device I'd suggest backing up the partitions that were rejected by the upgrade (logcat). See the advanced guide I posted for details.
If you have backups you just need to restore the partitions the upgrade is complaining about (logcat).
