Hey community,
I am currently not under contract with any provider…at the very least I want to give each provider a solid look before signing a new contract. Since I value the input of this community so much I am interested to see your thoughts. I don’t need help choosing a phone…also I am in the USA so for the purpose of this thread I am not interested in how the services would be rated worldwide.
Please add a vote to the poll…please don’t just pick the provider you are currently with but rather who you would choose if you had the chance…if anyone has relevant info please post it. My needs are simple…data and voice…coverage and customer service are very important. Let’s not turn this into a forum to bash providers…that is not my interest…if you have a chip on your shoulder please express it elsewhere…
I have added the top national carriers to the poll.
Thanks!
Well this thread was a BUST
You went with T-Mobile i'm guessing? Lol, I think you were right.
Oh hey, you posted that on December 11th, 1:43 and you reposted today on June 8th 7:43...
T-Mobile is extremely good if you live in a metro area...best call quality, good coverage, no dropped calls, fast data speeds (4-5mbps+ in some places)
At&T as it´s the only carrier that have HTC devices which work with 3G in México!
Tmobile has the best phones imho
Verizon tends to have the best signal
and AT&T is just a general all rounder
I currently have AT&T and aside from their pitiful phone selection and ludicrous data plan, i usually have good service

Funny...I actually have not updated my phone yet...kinda want HD2 but kinda want an Android phone too...I am draging my feet.
metro now owned by T-mobile
I went out today during my day off and seen what was out there to offer. Shopping for a family plan with at least 3 lines, I have a buddy and his wife where I stay maybe 1 week a month who haven't had phones and need them (have kids etc). I couldn't find even close to a better deal than what Metro T-mobile offered me in the store. First I'd like to say that going into a cell store is most generally pointless, because you will get a better deal 90% of the time going online to shop phone plans. However this was certainly an exception.
I was coming from Boost, and wanting to port my number over. Porting over from another company will usually get you a slightly better deal. They have a current (4 for 100) promotion at the metro/t-mobile dealer. That seemed to be a decent price for a family plan. We all have fairly new, decent phones already that can be carrier unlocked fairly easily. So I asked if I would need to purchase SIM cards which seems to be the norm, I was figuring 100 for the plan, then probably 25 a piece for activation/sim cards etc... Then i was kinda shocked.
She then said since I'm porting over from another carrier that I'll get a new phone (up to 240.00usd) for myself, AND each additional line. There will be a 15 dollar activation fee for each line.
So I'll be at around 180.00 out the door. That includes: unlimited talk, text, and unlimited data with no throttling. And the phones I have to choose from don't suck. I'm still deciding between.
LG Stylo 4 (we already have 3 in the house, they are decent midrange phones)
LG Stylo 5 (another gig of ram, slightly better glass, and android 9)
Samsung a10e
Samsung a20
Moto g7 power
Granted, all of metro's phones seem to have a ton of bloatware on em... but i can't pass this deal up because the best part is: NO CONTRACT
I'm probably going to be selling 3 stylo 4's on swappa

yup, good news for all. the only thing that i and some others are wondering is how long unlimited 4G/LTE plans will be available and if verizon will someday alter existing plans to avoid grandfathered data plans.
This was confirmed yesterday....
Sweet!

I was kinda underwhelmed by the incremental upgrade of this phone (though everything of course looks good about it...) but seeing the unlimited 4G without a price hike makes me seriously itch to see about jumping on this while it's still unlimited.
What do you figure the odds of being able to retain that unlimited data plan for your next phone after the tbolt are? For forever we kept an old verizon plan that was far cheaper and had unlimited data...until they coerced us to "upgrade" to use any new phones
I'm on At&T right now and I've been considering buying a contract for Verizon while the 4g unlimited plans are still available. I have a grandfathered unlimited plan right now and it includes 4g service (for my Atrix), but they haven't activated the HPSA+ in my area and it seems like they never will.
Does Verizon have a history of altering contracts whenever they feel like it or is it like what I have with AT&T where I can keep the contract, grandfathered, for as long as I don't alter it?
I would just hold out for the Bionic to come out, but it seems like that could be a few months and I don't want to miss out on the plan if it goes away...

^ THIS. When I heard about that this morning when I called VZW and tried to get them to give me the Wirefly price for the phone, I almost just said yes anyway. Living in Jersey City, right outside of NYC, i'm almost guaranteed that I will get 4g coverage. Now I just have to decide if I want to let go of my Incredible, it's so hard...

Did they match the price? I am thinking of doing the same to add two new lines to a plan. I might walk into a store and see if they will match wirefly or their own online 199 and waive activation. Effectively same as Wirefly in the end. Except for tax.
No they didn't match it, so I just bought it at their 2 year price. I didn't really try that hard cause it didn't matter that much to me . I'm sure with a little pressure you can get them to match it. I didn't have activation fees either.
Some guy was there actually getting 4 Thunderbolt's. 1 was an upgrade, 3 were for the family plan he was getting. They were working with him to make the total as cheap as possible for him. So like I said, with a little conversation, i'm sure you can get them to help you out in some way.

interesting.....as seen in other threads here there are certain discounts online if you have an employee discount (e.g. my employer's verizon store portal shows $229/1 year and $199/2 year contract). i was going to go to a verizon store today to see the thunderbolt in person before purchasing, maybe i can get them to give me the online prices available to me. i'll head there after work and let you all know if i have any success in getting cheaper online prices in-store.
Yea, our company is one of the ones that offers 199/229 for 2/1 year contracts. So I can pick it up online for 229 for 1 year but tax and 35 activation put me way above Amazon or Wirefly+Fatwallet.
On the upside, if I do 1 year I can probably upgrade and sell the TB and recoup a large chunk of the difference if I need to.
HTC wasn't kidding when they said this isn't the phone you want, its the one after that.
I am more than happy with my G2 because I love having a hardware keyboard, but the unlimited LTE data plan is the reason I am leaving. I'm probably going to buy a multi-core phone well before my 2 year contract is up.
Just Bought ThunderBolt online and after Company Discount and Upgrade priceing I got it for 199.99 plus tax. Payed 250 ish Straight up. Im a Added line so I only pay 10$ a month plus 30$ Unlimited 4g Data plus 5$ insureance. My Monthnly bill is now gonna be 45$. *SNORTS*
bummer....the verizon i went to (and it was a corporate store, not an authorized retailer) said for whatever reason they don't match online corporate discounts. i'm heading back north to where i live tomorrow so i'll check out stores there, otherwise i'll have to get it online and wait for delivery.......blah.
i guess other people have nice verizon reps nearby who are either more accommodating or more eager to make sales.

free online 2 day shipping. pretty fast.
Mine was $199 in store, but only because of my NE2 $50 discount.
Took advantage of work discount. -$50 off of price of phone but tax rapage on list price ate that and some. 22% off 450 min voice plan (no text since I use Google Voice). Activation waved. I'll be happy if I can get Verizon to add 450 bonus mins per month to match my Sprint plan.
Hi Guy's And Girl's
I have been a regular forum ghost for about 4 years now, I own 3 HTC HD2's all with custom rom's ranging from WP7 to Android. Im currently looking at buying a new phone to play with and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to get next. Ideally im looking at HTC but i have been looking at the samsung galaxy.
Also I probably wont get n e thing till about april. Are there n e top spec smartphones being released in or around april that might b worth getting?
Galaxy Note or Galaxy S II (any modification, the highest-speced is Skyrocket HD, but release date is unknown).
Also you can wait for MWC (it's on 27feb-1mar). There'll be HTC quad-core phone(s) announced, e.g. HTC Edge.
Oh, and I forgot about Galaxy Nexus. It has ICS on the board which is good.
If you are willing to spend, and willing to import, the Samsung Galaxy SIII will be available sometime around there.
have you considered buying a Sensation? it is just as strong as the Galaxy II but after the release of the XL and XE versions it is dirtcheap.
Hey all, Thank you for your speedy reply's.
I was looking at the new htc sensation but the galaxy s2 has always come out on top on side by side reviews with the sensation. Plus I really like the display on the galaxy s2 nice and clear even in direct sunlight. god theres so many choices and not enough money lol. Im gonna take a look at the other phones suggested. i might even hold of 4 a bit till sumthing extra special is released.
Edit :- The spec for the new galaxy s3 and htc edge sound amazing. i do like ics on my hd2 so its gotta be even better on new devices. iv got the wants now lol
I too was considering getting the Samsung GS2, but I'm currently at an unpleasant decision point about giving up my "smartphone exclusion" and "data opt-out" features tied to my WM6.1 LG Incite. The on-screen buttons are really small and resistive screen is so insensitive that it's barely usable. I'm ready to move on, but getting stuck for a worthless 200MB data plan or a grossly overcharged 2GB plan doesn't do it for me.
I was considering getting an international i9100 version and flashing its IMEI to my current IMEI, but there's some potential contractual problems there. Does anyone have a more legitimate way to maintain my current pricing plan or if it must increase to get something of value (e.g. data and texts for the same price)?
Thank you for your patience with
<--this n00b.
Well if ur UK based most networks offer free addons to pay monthly customers, for example, T-Mobile offer smartphone users a free unlimited data plan with the exception of a fair use policy. And iv never had a slapped wrist from them and my data's never been turned off. O2 have a similar plan but I'm not too sure about vodafone or orange. Hope this helps.

I'm on AT&T in the US and they're pretty finicky when it comes to their smartphones. They claim all of these hard rules, but I had an agent the other night looking for justification so she could put the exclusion and opt-out back on the line as the previous two agents suggested that I could do after getting the GS2. They *can* do it, but it seems like they're either not supposed to or only under special circumstances. I asked if I could pick out an unlocked phone and maintain my contract that way and they said that doing so was unnecessary and that I could just get a subsidized phone and maintain my contract through premier customer care. After getting the 2nd rep's email address and then emailing her...a week later she still hasn't called me. I'm beginning to think that she might have been full of hot air. I'm concerned that I'm going to have to keep on having this crappy phone with it's poor reception because I'm a student, my parents are on a fixed income, and we can't afford to make the monthly bill go up $25/mo.

O2 data is not available free its a £6 add on and you only get 500 megabytes. Never known anyone get free bolt on off them and been with them years so not all carriers give bolt ons away. But giffgaff offer true unlimited data though I'm on contract with o2 so can't use them.

I am just a very short time away from being able to walk away from Big Red (feb 20). i am very reluctant to do so. I love the unlimited data. I am on an old alltel plan from yrs ago. So my question is if i stay with verizon what would be a great phone to purchase that should have a great development like my current phone the galaxy nexus. what phones are all these great developers using who still want to stay with verizon. I am seriously considering ordering the Note 3 Developer edition for verizon off of the samsung website. i am in line for one. they were on backorder. what do you think?
I have unlimited data on multiple lines, which is pretty much the only reason why I am still on VZW. They will probably kill all unlimited data plans either this year or next year, it is just a matter of time. When you give up VZW unlimited data, you will never get it back. Ever. Yes, T-mobile offers "unlimited" data but there is a catch: you are throttled after you go over 3 GB. So before you walk away from unlimited data, be sure you have your priorities in check. What is more important to you, having unlimited data or a phone that is not locked down? If it comes down to how much money you can save on another carrier, then that is another matter, and obviously a top priority for most people. But I would strongly encourage you to think about it long and hard before giving up unlimited data until VZW forces it.
Regarding your question about phones, unfortunately VZW is notoriously anti-open and anti-consumer, and that is not going to change. With each new generation of devices, they force OEMs to make it increasingly difficult to unlock bootloaders and root. I am not telling you anything you don't know here. VZW has managed to gimp all of their latest devices so much that the development scene is very slow compared to just a few months ago. If you check out the VZW development threads, you will see what I mean. I have a Note 2 and Note 3. The Note 2 community is still fairly active considering how long it has been out, and many devs have moved on to other devices. But the Note 2 isn't crippled with Knox, which is why the Note 3 dev scene is so pale in comparison. Unless you have a Note 3 DE, you are stuck on TW based roms, probably until the end of time. And Samsung's miniscule allotment of DEs has prevented it from becoming the superstar phone that it could (should) have been. You can hold out for a DE, but the fact that so few people have it means there will be lack of interest & effort from devs to build roms for it. So in reality if you stay on VZW, you must decide if you want TW or no TW. If you like TW, then by all means get the best TW phone available (Note 3). If you want more options like AOSP-based roms, then consider the LG G2 or the upcoming G2 Pro (if it even comes to VZW). The G2 dev community is pretty active, much more so than the Note 3. Alternatively, you could get an older phone like the Note 2 or S4 with an established dev community, and just wait & see what comes down the pike.

That's completely untrue. T-Mobile unlimited means unlimited. You're throttled if you are below their $70 plan. I'm currently on their $70 unlimited everything prepaid plan and haven't gotten throttled and I'm at around 5GB of usage this month. The $60 plan is 2.5GB before throttle. The $50 plan is 500 MB before throttle. There's also a $30 plan that's 100 minutes (10c/minute after), unlimited text, and 5GB before throttle. All plans include LTE.

Actually, no. You made a broad-sweeping statement, insinuating that no matter what plan you're on, you'll be throttled after 3GB of usage. Try being more specific next time.

The take home point is this:
The OP is currently on a Verizon unlimited data plan, which means truly unlimited and doesn't need to be qualified by how much he pays per month.
Verizon unlimited is truly unlimited and unthrottled. T-mobile's service is unlimited so long as you are willing to pay a premium. If you are unwilling or can't afford to pay that premium, then you will be throttled. My original statement may be "broad sweeping", but there is an equally broad number of people that will not pay a premium for truly unlimited service.
So comparing the OP's current unlimited data plan to T-mobile's unlimited data plan is not necessarily comparing apples to apples.
But thank you for your exceedingly helpful contribution to this thread about what phone to use on Verizon

Chances are if you're in Verizon, you're already paying a "premium" over T-Mobile. Take it from me, I used to be a Verizon employee and I'm a current T-Mobile customer. Happy now?
To the OP:
Any Verizon device Galaxy S4 or later supports AWS LTE (which is what T-Mobile uses for LTE). So if you buy one of those phones and switch, as long as you live in an LTE area you will get full service (EDGE, HSPA+, LTE). However if you're looking to start new and buy or subsidize a T-Mobile phone, you have to ask yourself what you want in a phone.
Personally, I would recommend either the Moto X Developer Edition (because you maintain warranty even if you unlock the bootloader), or the Nexus 5 (a natural choice). I personally prefer and own the former and absolutely love it. It's pretty much stock Android with a few useful additions like active notifications, touch less controls, etc. And the unlocked and Developer Editions get their updates straight from Motorola. Matter of fact, I just got the 4.4.2 OTA update a few days ago.

Moto X, trust me. It doesn't need any custom ROMs. It just works. I promise you. You can root if you want and install a custom recovery. At most maybe XPosed with some modules. But ROM-wise, it's amazing out of the box. And this is coming from a guy who has a ROM'd Galaxy S4 too.
There are 3 threads devoted to discussions about devices, please repost your question in one of these three threads: The what should I buy thread or the The Device Suggestion Thread or the The Device Comparison Thread.
Thanks!

VZW took a particularly harsh view of the Note7 incident and was active in its demise. I'd imagine their relationship with Samsung is strained.
Top executives from major telecoms operators, including Verizon Communications Inc.’s Lowell McAdam, [VZW CEO] urged Mr. Lee [Interim Head of Samsung] to quickly kill the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, according to people familiar with the matter. The executives told Mr. Lee the smartphone was becoming increasingly unsalable.
On Oct. 11, Mr. Lee called Mr. Koh [Samsung Mobile chief] and ordered him to discontinue the smartphone. Later that day, Mr. Koh wrote a letter to the company’s mobile division, a copy of which was reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, calling the crisis “one of the toughest challenges we have ever faced.”
I'm starting to doubt Verizon will have these on the shelves this Friday. None of their employees will answer questions regarding its availability. So either Verizon just sucks at marketing or they have been told not to say anything about the item, probably due to the post above me concerning the Note 7...
It has been announced that T-Mobile will have them this Friday.
I still have the UDP. That means it will cost me $35 a month to add this device to my plan. I'm wondering if there's any benefit to getting it from a different carrier? I could link via Bluetooth to my S7 edge when using them together.

The Gear doesn't have to be on the same carrier as your phone to use the auto-forward (calls and texts) feature that's a component of Gear Manager. You won't have one number but only AT&T currently offers it when both phone and wearable/tablet are on their network. The only difference between the two when phone/Gear aren't BT connected is calls and text sent to your phone and forwarded show your Gear's discrete phone number when you reply. Your Gear would also have its own separate VM in that scenario. Auto-forwarding is more battery friendly as one number has the Gear's phone line active all the time.

I still have the UDP. That means it will cost me $35 a month to add this device to my plan. I'm wondering if there's any benefit to getting it from a different carrier?

For those not on a postpaid plan where a wearable line can be added. T-Mobile has the cheapest standalone plan, at $15/mo. AT&T and Verizon charge $35 and $40, respectively.

I looked around the T-Mo site, couldn't find a $15 plan. What do you get with it?
Also, when using the Gear app to forward do I have to set it up every time I leave w/o the phone or does it stay forwarded with the option of answering from my handset?
I had a chat session with each of carriers to determine the cost of putting a smartwatch on their cheapest standalone plan it's eligible for. While the S3 isn't available yet, it isn't theoretical because they sell other smartwatches that use a SIM (ie. LG Urbane). AT&T and Verizon put them on a smartphone plan (hence the high cost), while T-Mobile has a plan specific to wearables.
I can't speak about how call forwarding is handled by the Gear app. As a Google Voice user, its a non issue.☺
