Which phone you had before the S9+ ? - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Guides, News, & Discussion

Was it worth it ?

The S8+. Of all the phones I've owned that was the first one I've ever broken the screen. So yes, the upgrade to the S9+ was worth it
Short of that though... I don't know. While the upgrades from the S8 were noticeable, if you have to pay full retail for it I don't think it would be worth it. The S8 is a great phone.

unnecessary thread and thus also discussion. for whom will this be useful?

I had the LG G5 and YES. It was absolutely worth the 900 bucks. The G5 is a pile of garbage and I had sworn off galaxy phones after the garbage that is TouchWiz but damn this S9+ really appealed to me. Bought it, love it, will never leave it.

If it's unnecessary for you why bother posting ? Just ignore it

Technically the phone I had right before my S9+ was a OnePlus 5, but that was just a temporary phone. I only had it for 2 weeks.
I actually upgraded from the S8+.

note 8 and i upgrade to s9+ for battery and speakers it worth
love this device

Note 8, the s9+ is worth the dual sound etc

Yep that's because there was no phone that was impressive or worth the upgrade throughout the years. Nexus 6 IMO is still the best community developer friendly device today (aside from oneplus 5t) it's almost 4 years old and the xda nexus 6 forums are still strong today and filled with many ROMs compared to other phones. The front facing speakers (using Dolby & viper4android) still beats the quality of the S9+ (with Dolby enabled and configured to my liking). But of course I love the S9+ performance which is why I'm stuck to it like glue lol.

Note 5. Honestly not much difference.

HTC 10
Just ordered my upgrade today. Gonna miss my HTC, but it was time to move on since ViperRom was discontinued.

This was a long journey

s7 edge, s8 ,s9+ only upgraded to the s9+ as had a 20% off code on very.co.uk which the phone worked out to be £695, gave my old s8 the misses as she had the galaxy a5 2017,
everyone's happy all round.

Well, I upgraded from Galaxy S5.

Anyone excited about Galaxy S5?

MWC is starting in a couple of days and if tradition is followed, Samsung shall launch the next Galaxy soon.
Too many reports suggest that the latest device shall have a whole different UI, fingerprint sensor in the home button, 16mp camera and also a new LED flash module.
I, for one, am looking forward to seeing the features in action. Agreed, the development on Sammy devices sucks, specially Exynos, but hey, I can't deny the fact that they make the best phones too.
What say you?

I say it's a completely useless thread.
No it's not useless!
To be honest I'm getting tired of the yearly releases for the sake of it. From the leaks it looks like the S5 will have a qHD screen, fingerprint reader, and the usual upgraded processor and ram. Probably a 64 bit OS but if you know a bit about 32/64bit you'll know it's pointless and just for marketing.
The fingerprint reader is also pointless. Again Samsung are doing it just because apple did and don't have access to the same quality solution. The iPhone solution works really well. Which pains me to say. But Sammy's swipe solution is just going to take longer to unlock and is the same fad that laptops went through 5 years ago. Only business laptops come with fingerprint readers nowadays.
Lastly is the OS. I don't feel that Samsung adds any value with their touchwiz extras. My phone has had Cyanogenmod installed from about 3 months in and I've started to think it's going the way of touchwiz and not adding any value.
I'm running the Nexus 5 ROM with xposed and that gives me all the features and modifications I need. Xposed is the real game changer here. The only problem is the stability. The S4 running a Nexus 5 ROM is never going to be as stable as the Nexus 5. The Nexus 5 is a faster device then the S4 and the battery life is far, far better. I now have one as my work phone and part of me is hoping the S5 doesn't have any ground breaking features that makes me want it. I'll then buy a Nexus 5 and lower my mobile contract saving some money in the process.
The Nexus 5 may not have a qHD display but within 6-9 months the Nexus 6 will with a more mature processor and better battery life. Until the Galaxy has a bleeding edge feature I don't see the point in having a bleeding edge device. And it doesn't look like the S5 will
^ You know there's a diff between qHD and QHD right? qHD is quarter-HD while QHD is Quad-HD, the S5 may have the latter IF rumors are true.
Anyway...
I'm very excited, I'm going to get it in either March or April, looking forward to the new UI, Camera and Exynos CPU, I'm also looking forward to a new design, I hope it's a stunner (fingers crossed).
Will use my GS4 as a 2nd line when I get my GS5.
I'll only be excited (related to xda topics) when I'm able to kick out Knox from my phone

I think this time I will not get the s5. Because exynous processor, knox efuse and because LG and Sony learn how to made the things right
Next phone? Maybe LG or Motorola ( depending of what they can do after s5 release)

Let's see...
1. KNOX
2. Exynos
3. Touchwiz
Hell no...buying S4 is one of most biggest regret. Next phone? Probably LG or Sony or OPPO

I am with you because of Exynos but i think LG plays only with numbers and names. For example S4 and G2 both have GPS but nobody say that G2 takes 2-3 mins to find ~10 sats and ours S4 takes 2-3 seconds to find 15+ sats! poor GPS chip or poor software i don`t know.
Another example is WiFi-Direct. both have it but in G2 you can only use it with LG devices.
I think that LG is still not a good buy.

I think it's unarguable that Samsung offers cutting edge hardware. If only they had a better software design team. Honestly speaking, I'd much rather use a Snapdragon variant over exynos because of lack of development.

I agree that Samsung are at the cutting edge but that edge is not longer very far ahead. Other companies are already producing QHD displays and phones with finger print readers. You're right about the Exynos processor. As awesome as it maybe there's a lack of community support and so far Europe has only had the Qualcomm offering. I don't mind this as once again the Qualcomm offering isn't hugely different.
Please don't think I'm complaining or trashing Samsung here. I think the whole smartphone development has slowed down over the past 2 years since the S3.

Will Locked Bootloader/No Root be the Norm moving forward for Samsung and T-Mobile ?

Hello guys I just wanted to get a better feel of how everyone else feels right now and in particular to the Galaxy S7 as well as s7 Edge on T-Mobile having a locked bootloader making root extremely difficult to get if not impossible. This was upsetting to me not because I wanted the S7 and S7 Edge but because this set a precedent for the Note 6 which is not yet released. I started my Journey with a Galaxy Note 2 and loved them ever since. I have very large hands so I definitely needed a large phone and I really quite liked the size and features. I then got the Note 4 and was certainly happy with it for over a year. I usually only hold onto phones for a short while but that phone did pretty much everything for me so I held onto it a while. Samsung announced the Note 5 and I decided to pass due to no more SD Card so I now needed to opt for at least 64gb and no IR blaster. So I decided I wouldn’t be getting that and would look at other options. I began my hunt and ultimately one of the few phones that met my standards was the Nexus 6P since it had a 5.7-inch screen which was Amoled and had a very good camera and I decided to try out stock Android since everyone always raves of its speed and updates. Plus, root on the 6P would be easy.
Anyway the 6P has been doing fine but the battery does leave a lot to be desired (I feel touchwiz does very well with its battery optimizations). Camera is also slightly better due to speed and manual controls as well as screen brightness. The next phone on my radar is the Note 6 but with the no root precedent I’m fairly concerned. To sum it up I feel we don’t have many 5.7 inch or larger phone options out there and was wondering what devices will you guys be looking at as Note competitors especially if the new Note 6 from, T-Mobile cant be rooted? It seems manufacturers like LG and HTC are not really coming out with Note competitors and if they do they are basterdized in some fashion (like lower specs and cameras). Just makes you wonder if they are not interested in the market.
Well, from what I know lg is doing seem. V10 just got an update that apparently locked down the phone. Can't even go down to lollipop if you took the MM update...I will say you should hold onto that nexus, rest of the flashaholics and root lovers will join you soon. Lol
But to answer original post, yes that is now the norm going forward.
Gotta see t-mobile Samsung devices locked up one more time to tell.

This will be really sad if so. Nexus devices are fine but sometimes dont bring all the best features. If the phone is less than 5.7 inches and no Amoled its a non start for me. Liked the HTC 10 but 5.2 inch screen is no go for me lol.

i think the S8+ will do just fine. i have had every note device and never use the S pen. im excited for the new s8 though. just retruned my 7 plus and reversed my upgrade!
I was so excited when I got my note 5 back when, and decided that with oden, rooting was marvelous. and the dev. was very supportive. I'm on the s7 for a second time around and have seen a complete reversal for support. so with me it's a non issue with out an unlocked boot-loader. but if I had to choose, I couldn't wait, its the s8+ . Hopefully, a miracle would happen. peace.
I will get the S8+ if I decided to get a Samsung device this year. Simply because I rarely used the SPen ever.
Yea. I only use spen for copy and pasting texts

The Note 8 might have fingerprint under glass (at front), according rumors, the S8 would have had it, but Samsung run out of time to produce enough.
or the Samsung Galaxy On8? india only, but seems a better phone with removable back cover, none of this glass plated nonsense.
S8+ is on my high priority list! Don't need pen...
Just choose s8 plus
I still remember the day I bought a s6 edge
I used to love Samsung devices, but ever since they went only curved screens I've been bummed. Ooh well no more Galaxy's for me anymore. There are plenty of other phones. BTW absolutely love my Huawei Mate 9, best phone I've ever owned and I have owned almost all of them.
I almost bought a Mate 9, but the development there was scarce. Which made me have second thoughts. I'm currently using the Note 5 and was considering a G6 tough at first. I'm interested in seeing what the S8+ have to offer though and will make my decision after the reveal.
i had galaxy S2 then legendary S3 ...and then i switched to Note 4....and i sweared i would never go back to S series from note series.....so i guess either note 8 or i dont know what to buy these days....When Note 4 came out it blow my mind and i said that i must have it and bought it a moment when it came out....Now days i have no idea what my next phone will be :/
I was eagerly waiting for the release of the new Galaxy S phone, sold my S7 Edge like a month ago. I was all hyped and stuff, but even since all the rumours started to show up (no 6 gigs ram, no fingerprint scanner under the front glass (maybe for Note 8), patent for Note 8 dual camera etc.), I became unsure. At this moment i don't even know if i should spend 900 euros on a phone ) I even considered buying a Umidigi Z Pro

Is it just me?

Though I have pre ordered the S8+ I am not excited about it? Generally when a new mobile is due I get like a school kid at Christmas and count the hours and days away. The Note 7 drove me crazy and when it arrived it was MORE than I could ever wish for, simply a superb mobile and I have been buying them since 1989 when they where bricks! (I wrote Bricks!)
I have read what few Youtube reviews there are and the S8 is just not giving me that buzz you know the feeling that's why you are on this forum.
Am I the only one feeling this way?
'Maybe' its after owning the Note 7, no mobile has come even close to it for me? Maybe its just the evolution of the S brand more than the revolution that made that Note 7 stand out? Since the Note 7 I have owned 3 mobiles and they have all been just tools non of them has given me pride of ownership, non of them have got that wow factor.
I promised myself I would NOT purchase the S8+ and wait for the Note 8. I am so weak.....Is there another shrink in the house? Heeeeelp. :crying:

Maybe don't upgrade as often and when you do you'll see a huge upgrade. Coming from the Moto x pure I'm happy to finally have usb-c, fingerprint reader, better IPS rating, better camera, ability to pair to 2 bluetooth devices ect... If you already have the S7 this phone isn't really that much of an improvement. Usually ever 2 years is a good measure if you can wait that long. I went from S3 to S5... From S5 to s6 didn't seem like that much of an improvement so I jumped to Moto x pure before the S7 came out.

If you have the means then do it.
I am personally more excited for this device than i have been for a long time. When they stole my Note 7 from me, i was angry and hurt and as a way to lash out, i went Apple! Just like so many mistakes made as a youth, it turns out i wasnt hurting anyone but myself. Sadly, there wasnt really another phone out there to go for since i had went from the s7 to the Note 7. Now, im anxious to get back.

I would still have my note 4 now if it did not break and Samsung would not fix it but replaced it with a s7. The screen size it everything for me as I watch everything on it. Sold the new s7 cannot wait for my s8+ 5.1inch way to Small for a top end phone these days
This "review" put a bit of a dampener on things, but being a Note 4 user for the past few years I am probably due an upgrade. Pre-ordered S8+, probably will mean I won't be getting any Note 8 as I have always honored my 2 year contracts since my first S2 "smart phone"

Coming from the S6 I'm very excited about it, going to get it in a week or less The overall specs updates for me are a reason to upgrade in themselves, the display, and other features that attract S7 owners adding to it.
But honestly speaking, I do feel a bit backstabbed by Samsung. The phone here in Finland cost more here than anywhere else in the world, and I got NO bonuses of any sort with it, while people in other countries are getting free 256gb SD cards and VR headsets. The bonuses aren't anything that I would particularly use, but it feels kind of rude from Samsung that some areas are left out on bonuses completely, while having a higher price than anywhere else.
But nevertheless, I haven't lost a single bit of the hype I had at launch (and for months before it, based on leaks), and I have all reasons to believe that it's going to be an amazing phone. Going to be a long week to wait
Coming from the Nexus 6P, I'm pretty pumped. Last Samsung phone I had was the note 4, note 2 before that and s2. I think I'm more excited for not being able to root again and seeing if I could take it with the s8 plus lol. But overall I'm curious to see how Samsung has progressed over the years.

Im more curious at this point than excited, curious to see if I will like the aspect ratio or not.
If I like it then I will swap for a exynos device which will hopefully be BL unlocked and have root, twrp etc.
Hard to get excited about a model (snapdragon) that will see never see any of that more than likely.

Heeeeelp. :crying:
Hope you all enjoy a great Easter. :good:

Since I have being using iPhones for 6 years, Im soooo HYPE for S8+!
My s8 plus and my wifes s8 will be here tomorrow. I have rooted since the Q... so while i have played with the s8 and think its a great phone i ha e concerns i will return it for lack of root. I have the note 5 right now because of root. I will keep my note 5 just in case i cant handle not having root. Not overly excited though because of lack of root

Thinking of coming over from Samsung?

Greetings;
I'm almost convinced to sell my Sammy S8+ and buying an HTC U11!
What I need to know is this: is there an advantage to get a specific variant
over another as far as the "Rom/Kernel Development" goes?
I live in Canada but can also import one or even get a "US unlocked" unit.
Thank you.

Well, those of us who have been with HTC since the beginning of time welcome you with open arms... but before that, there's a few things we have to go over on our "Are-You-Worthy-Of-The-HTC-Phone-Checklist"
1. Do you constantly wish you could change your phone to fit your needs (you're that guy that always has something unique or flashy on their phone)?
2. Are you a nerd, geek or maybe have high aspirations to be either (Blessed are the nerds, for they shall inherit the earth)?
3. Are you a selfless, confident guy who values quality and uniqueness over useless features?
4. Do you promise to remain faithful, year after year, even if HTC fails to produce devices worthy of your C.H.C (cold hard cash)?
If so, then I recommend going after the regular Unlocked HTC U11 (US version). International version from my experience though comes with dual sims, take longer to get updates and other critical software improvements.
Ditch Sammy and grab the HTC. You might even find yourself with a sexy nerdy chick on your arm! :good:

I've got the U.S. unlocked version and it has 2 sims or it can be used with 1 sim and an sdcard.
My suggestion is get the 6GB/128GB unlocked version ... this way you can use both simslots if you need to and still have more than enough storage.

Get the exynos version if you care about root , otherwise stick with a Canadian version. Never know if Samsung falls back to how they treated the unlocked USA Gs7/edge lineup

lol.
No
Yes
Definitely
I'll promise, lol.
But in all seriousness I miss smooth UI and great performance that is not hindered by laggy software. And great development as well.
Otherwise the GS8+ design is in my opinion one of the best, if not the best.
Thank you.
I went to get S8 today, all S8 and S8+ devices there had burned in displays, it's also weird that Samsung store has on display devices looking like that. No way i'm getting AMOLED phone again until they improve that. Now i'm looking at U11.

That is a display/demo unit. I've had many Galaxys and Notes, but never experienced "burned in or ghost on my phones
and also now you have the option of hide and immersive in Tochwis.

I have S6 that's a mess, started showing burn in after a year, and now after two years it's very bad. I use navigation in a car and that's main reason. I still might consider S8 but i like U11 more and more.

Ya I'm thinking of putting my S8+ up for sale so I can buy the U11.
Just do it........
Best build and smooth UI on the market......

I moved from Samsung to HTC 2 years ago and never looked back since. I'm not even tempted to.
Beamed in by telepathy.
This thing flies! I'm not sure if it's because I disabled animation in Developer options but this is really fast! The unit is slippery at the same time for me it feels very nice to hold. Premium build as expected from HTC. And yes the camera...its great! 6GB/128GB here?
Just got it in Black. S8 display was to narrow for me.

I was a S6 owner too. Indeed, I think S6 is pretty than U11 but TouchWiz UI is a big mess and got memory problem during multi-tasking.

Well I went from the s8+ to the G6, lasted 1 day back to the s8+ then I got the OnePlus 5. Ditched the s8+ for the oneplus. Lost the great display but gained a smooth lag free experience. Then I got a great deal on the HTC U11. Never considered HTC before that. Never been a fan of touch U11 and their cameras we always ****ty. So when the U11 Dxomark rated 90 came along it seemed like an obvious choice. So now I got rid of the oneplus 5 and I'm rocking the U11 until the note 8 comes along.
The U11 software experience is just as smooth as the oneplus 5 with half the ram so better than the s8+. Only downside imo is the UI it's very dated. It basically looks like kit kat. The theming engine is laughable and sense is way too invasive. On the upside the design and finish is great, the screen is surprisingly good and the sound is also very good. So in the end somehow HTC U11>Oneplus5 >S8+
And yeah no lag.
Did I mention no lag... ?

Thank you for your reply.
And I also thought about OP5, I mean excellent price, power and software and unreal Dev activity,
almost like the "Nexus" what use to be! But as soon as I sell my S8+, I'll get a U11.

Oh yeah. Oneplus has definitely taken over the Nexus mantle. Lots of bang for your buck with a thriving development community. The only reason that made me go with the U11 is the better camera. I'm not sure which provider you're with. I'm with Telus and I lost my LTE + with the U11 had it on both the s8+ and the OP5 just in case that sort of thing matters to you. ?

Of course it does. I've been with Rogers for a while now but bought a "Public Mobile" SIM card but haven't switched yet and
as you probably know PM use Telus bands. Don't you have the Canadian variant of U11?

That's the thing. I have no idea. Bought it off of Kijiji. I have no idea where to find the info. Don't know if I have the Canadian, us, or international variant.
